Thick as thieves us, we'd stick together for all time

We're making jam. John is salivating. It's a glorious colour, I just hope it tastes good!

We went out picking fruit yesterday morning, so have loads for all sorts of cooking.

He can drool over this picture now, not into the pan...

The weekend was lovely. Even stupid little things made it amazing - like turning up at the carriage, and being greeted by the owners... I introduced myself and the lady said "And you must be Greg's husband" to John. I know it's silly, but...not everyone does that. I mean, ah, I don't know what I mean. But anyway, it was nice. And they leant us cake pans, and were just generally very nice people. Who own a very nice railway carriage. It even has two small bedrooms for the boys, so they didn't have to share. Although Mycroft took the bunk beds, and slept on the top one, so the dogs could have the bottom.

We cycled along the coastal paths, ate our lunch on the beach, and got to go to the pub for a nice leisurely pint, too. Perfect weekend!

Today was all about John washing socks while I tried to distract him...

Sherlock got quite a few presents...including these:

Because who doesn't want to eat a milk chocolate colon??

He was very grateful and charming, anyway. He is a fantastic young man.

I question their decision not to make the skull white chocolate but it was delicious all the same.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yes, the colour choice does seem to be rather random. Perhaps you could get them in other colours...I didn't look, to be honest.

Surprised you got further down that post than the jam.

REReader said...

Chocolate body parts is utterly, totally, a perfect gift for Sherlock!

And that jam looks wonderful--what a gorgeous color, not to mention berries. :)

I do think I understand what you mean about the owners. A marriage is a marriage, and with so many people still not getting that, it has to be nice to meet people who just do.

Joolz said...

That is indeed a lovely way to be greeted and should definitely be the norm rather than the exception, let's hope it keeps getting more widespread all the time.

I'm glad you all had such a wonderful weekend, it's lovely that you all get to spend time doing the simplest of things, but to be able to do them together means everything.

That jam does look delicious, do you leave lumps in your jam or mulch it all down and (forgive my jam ignorance) can it be eaten immediately or does it have to be left to mature - because good luck trying to keep John away from it if so. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

It's not even about being married - just they were so nice and accepting of us and our boys, married or not.

Jam pictures don't smell as good as the real thing.

Lovely. :)

Jam pictures don't smell as good as the real thing.

And now I'm hungry for jam... ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Joolz - we'll leave this jam a bit lumpy. And John has eaten the bit I put out to check it would set. Licked it off the saucer like a giant jam-addicted cat.... but he's impatiently waiting for the rest, until it's cooled and set.

Joolz said...

I'm sure it will be delicious... if it lasts long enough to be eaten later, of course. ;)

That is such a cute image of John as a jam-addicted cat - now tell me you're not tempted to put the jam in other places to test out that jam-licking tongue! ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

It just would've gone to waste otherwise...

Greg Lestrade said...

I can assure you no jam will be going where jam does not belong. Think of the pips!

Joolz said...

It's a good job you're both so conscientious - no waste, no mess, that's the way to be. ;)

I'll just go and keep my smutty mind to myself... now, where can I find some nice jam..! ;)

Enjoy the rest of your evening, gentlemen. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sweet enough already, without added jam ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - absolutely true.

Greg Lestrade said...

ha, you would still prefer me covered in jam! But you'd have to fight the wasps for me ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

No, no. I prefer you unadulterated.

And also without wasps.

Greg Lestrade said...

You can have me unadulterated and sans wasps if you follow me to bed right now. ;)

Can't guarantee I'll be moth free though. They seem to like my hair.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll follow you to bed almost any time. And I'll try to keep the moths at bay.

Delurking...what flavor is the jam?

My mother and I made jam earlier this summer, peach raspberry. It's amazing.

Liz said...

Also delurking because peach raspberry sounds delicious! My friend made raspberry jalapeno jam to enter into a contest. One of the winners made basil jam.

wow, jam making also brings back a ton of memories for me! When I was a kid, it was my job as the best tree-climber, to go up into the trees for the wild concord grapes. My mom collected the clusters I dropped to her, and we made grape jam, which I ate all year for school lunches (peanut butter and grape jam sandwiches: still my favorite lunch). My sister liked raspberry jam, so she was in charge of picking raspberries. I don't like the seeds in raspberry jam, they get stuck in my teeth. And they were too small for the sieve we had that took the seeds out of the grape mash so effectively. Boy, I close my eyes and I'm back in the kitchen of my childhood with my mom making jam! :)

Oh, for the days of homemade jelly and jam! Strawberry rhubarb was a favorite, and crabapple jelly on toast on cold winter morning. Are you going to do any pickling?

Olli said...

I love the subtext of, "Why you must be Greg's..."

It's the implication that you belong together! Which you do.

REReader said...

We--my siblings and I--used to pick blueberries with our grandmother, but they never lasted long enough to make it to jam! (My mom did manage a few pies, now and again.)

S, I'm the only one in my family that likes raspberries with seeds--I like the crunch. :)

Joolz said...

Good morning all.

Happy one month-iversary. This time last month it was all excitement and joy and I'm sure it's done nothing but get better and better since. Congratulations and here's to many more.

I know you're back to it today, but I hope you get to meet up for lunch at the very least to enjoy your day together. Have a good one. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thank you!

I'll have to see if we can find each other at some point. Proper pea souper here today.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, I'm around for an hour or so, the ngot to go and see a man about a dog. If you wanted to meet up for coffee.

John H. D. Watson said...

Coffee would be nice. I'll throw rocks at your window when I get there.

Greg Lestrade said...

You'll be arrested for throwing rocks at the yard.

John H. D. Watson said...

What if I throw jam?

John H. D. Watson said...

(I texted instead. No word yet on if you can get arrested for throwing jam at the Yard.)

REReader said...

Very prudent. (And it would be a pity to waste the jam on a window. ;))

Greg Lestrade said...

It was a redundant question. I know you'd never waste jam like that.

Greg Lestrade said...

The commish did a live twitter question and answer session. Now the super thinks we should....

REReader said...

Well, if you do it, disable your auto correct first... :D

Greg Lestrade said...

there's no way I'm doing it. We all developed severe technophobia.

John H. D. Watson said...

Probably wise.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'd only be completely paranoid I'd say something terrible. Or someone would ask something terrible...

REReader said...

You've all been very quiet--I hope it's because you're having a lovely, peaceful evening together.

Sherlock said...

Lestrade's reading boring things I looked to make sure they weren't good about murders but they're not and John did some ironing and folding and I made the degus a rope to walk across and they did.

REReader said...

I have to say that rope-walking degus sounds much the most fun of those choices, definitely. (And I love to read, even if it's not about murders.) Is it just a single rope line, like a tightrope in a circus?

REReader said...

Or something more like a rope bridge? (I typed that, originally, I don't know where it went!)

Sherlock said...

Just a single one but I made it longer and longer.

REReader said...

Oh, wow! I had no idea degus had such good balance. And I'm sure it was a fun challenge for them--you're very good at coming up with interesting new things for them to do.

Greg Lestrade said...

They're almost as good at balancing as Sherlock is at staying up far too late...

REReader said...

(I see that "almost" in that sentence there... :D)

Greg Lestrade said...

Actually, I don't know which is better. I think the degus learn faster... but then it's a far longer time inbetween bedtimes than it is crossing ropes to treats... Sherlock only gets to try one tactic each day...

REReader said...

It's a conundrum. *nods*

Was the "boring" reading for work?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, reports on policing methods, detention, mental health, that sort of thing. Good stuff to talk over with John, get his perspective as a health professional

pandabob said...

I really love the fact that you and your husband now have work in common Greg :-) its good to share hobbies and family but to be able so share in discussions about work and to learn from each other is a lovely :-)

I hope you all have successful days :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

John, i'm at Mycroft's school on a job. Might be here a while. Will call when i have a chance

Love you

John H. D. Watson said...

On a job? Did something happen? He's all right, isn't he?

I love you too.

Mycroft said...

I am fine, thank you.

I'm not certain how much I should say about the incident on here.

I can see Lestrade from my form room window, with lots of other officers, the headmaster and some other teachers.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm glad you're all right. I was fairly sure L would've said something if you weren't, but...well, it's nice to have confirmation. I hope it's not too bad, whatever it is. Have they cancelled classes?

Mycroft said...

We have been told to report to our form rooms and stay until further notice. I'm unsure if classes will resume this afternoon.

John H. D. Watson said...

I hope you've got something to read at least. Has Lestrade been to see you yet?

Greg Lestrade said...

Not yet. Sorry, m fine, as you can see.

Younger boy may have been abducted. Unsure yet. Could have gone of his own accord. Impossible to know without more info.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh no. I hope he's all right.

Anonymous said...

I hope he's alright too, and that he's off doing something stupid, so his parents can yell at him and hug him with relief in the near future.

And Mycroft, I know you will call John or lestrade if you need to talk, but hugs to you (if you'd like them). It's bad enough when something like this happens at your school, but I know it may bring up memories for you. Take care of yourself, yeah?

Luck, all.
Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah we're all hoping for the best.

I'll try and get to see you in a bit, Mycroft, if you want me to? Don't want to cramp your style.

REReader said...

Echoing the wish that the boy is okay.

I'd offer you a virtual hug, Mycroft, but I think you'd rather I didn't, so.

Greg Lestrade said...

It is currently looking like he did not go of his own free will.

Been to see Mycroft now, John. He's doing okay. Glad he's home for the weekend.

John H. D. Watson said...

Me too. Very glad. I'd imagine the rest of the parents are as well.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. Few here a ready. mainly getting in the way, to be honest.

i don't know when ill be home

Sherlock said...

Can I come and help pleaseeeeeee???

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry Sherlock, not a chance.

Mycroft said...

The rules for us have relaxed slightly. We are going to dinner now, and afterward I'm allowed to walk the dogs providing Anthea is with me.

We're not to leave the school grounds, and must not walk around alone.

I have seen Lestrade walking around the grounds a few times. He looks rather stressed.

Greg Lestrade said...

that would be a fair assessment

REReader said...

I imagine pretty much everyone there is somewhat stressed. Good luck, guys.

John H. D. Watson said...

L and Mycroft - love to you both. Let me know if there's anything I can do. Besides restraining Sherlock from getting on the next train. I'm already doing that.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks. Mycroft offered me a chance to kip in his bed if i needed it later. rather think he needs to be awake in his lessons though.

John H. D. Watson said...

Anthea must have a sofa or something?

Greg Lestrade said...

she has already offered to clean the dog hair off it for me.

John H. D. Watson said...

Very kind. I hope you match the dogs today.

Rider said...

Match the dogs? Leaving hair everywhere? Jumping into any available body of water? Drooling?

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. I can't remember what he's wearing - just hope it's reasonably close in colour to the dog hair that's going to get all over it.

Mycroft said...

Anthea told me that she tried to remove all the dog hair from the blanket on the sofa.

Then she realised she didn't have a blanket on the sofa.

I think she was just trying to cheer me up, but I'm not completely sure. They do shed a lot of hair.

Small Hobbit said...

I suppose if the dogs decide to share the couch with Lestrade anyway it won't really matter how much dog hair Anthea removed.

pandabob said...

It sounds like a tricky day for you all and not over yet I guess :-(

I hope you can move forward with the investigation Greg and that the rest of you are doing well at keeping yourselves busy.

Greg Lestrade said...

Night Sherlock. Sleep well, and be good for John.

Love you, kiddo.
