Snow Can Burn Your Eyes, But Only People Make You Cry

Don't really know why I've opened up this page to do an entry. Not got a whole lot to say.

Nothing much going on I want to share in life. And I wouldn't mind telling you about work, but I can't. Needless to say I wasn't exactly happy about pulling a 14 hour shift and 'losing' my last night with John before I was on nights anyway.

Found him on the sofa when I got in. I think Mycroft had tucked a blanket around him. He was rather adorably befuddled when I woke him up.

I think we'll try and take the boys to see a bit of the Triathlon tomorrow. Feels like they should get to see some of the games. I might be fairly sleepy, but once we're done I can always duck out and get some sleep while they're out doing something.

We're doing so well in the Olympics. Great to see so many athletes doing well in their home Olympics. Must feel pretty special.

Have a pic of some Met Olympians, in 1908. K division, Met police. They got bronze. City and Liverpool police got gold and silver respectively...

I would think winning an Olympic medal in front of the home crowd must feel about as special as it gets!

Seeing some of the triathlon should be fun--and it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. :)

(Why don't athletes wear spiffy outfits like that anymore?)

pandabob said...

no need to share anything Greg but I hope you're OK.

will night shift be calmer or are you likely to be a busy man?

The olympics is going so well all the golds in the cycling are brilliant but then I'm a bit biased due to knowing one of the riders ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Not sure, AnonyBob. Might be busy. Friday night, lots of people out drinking. Not the best combination.

Which one do you know? They're all doing amazingly. I'd love a go in a velodrome.

pandabob said...

I guess not :-( I hope it is at least only as long a shift as you expect :-)

Steven Burke one of the team pursuit riders, he'll be carrying gold when he revisits school in September :-) I think they are amazing all of them!!

Only slightly worried by that Greg, I know we've been a bit unhelpful recently but I hope you don't track back too far into yourself, talking about things seems to have been good for you. (most of the time)

Good luck with work.

Here's hoping it's a reasonably quiet night!

Oooh, for once I know the song lyric without having to look it up!

*does the dance*

I've given up on trying to watch the Olympics. I'm not interested to the sports they're broadcasting all that much and I can't see the ones on the 'net via NBC because I don't have cable. Ah, well. I'll try to see the closing ceremonies anyway.

But your picture makes me wonder if there are any newsreels around about some of the earlier Olympics. Those might be really fun to watch. Look at all those mustaches!

L - well, at least your wandering star seems to have found somewhere to rest.

Hope the drunks all decide to have an early night and leave you to do whatever you're doing in peace. And that you don't end up either wet or smelly or both.

pandabob said...

quiet or busy so far Greg?

(nosey is my middle name you know ;-) )

Desert Wanderer said...

Why back in 1908? Haven't you won any since thin? ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob

2 ambulances
5 arrests
3 dispersal orders
7 shouts

bit busy.

DW - I don't know!

pandabob said...

thanks for that Greg, if I don't ask again will the numbers remain the same? ;-)

Did anyone else think it was a joke when they said they were painting post boxes gold for our gold medal winners? apparently it's true but only for some of them!

Desert Wanderer said...

You don't remember, Lestrade? Surely they would have made an announcement each time?

Anonymous said...

If Lestrade can remember announcements all the way back to 1908, he's been keeping a secret I'm not sure I want to know.

Greg Lestrade said...

Maybe I've been cursed like Greg The Florist...

Desert Wanderer said...

If it's the kind of curse that results in getting a Doc Hotson of your own, sign me up!

Anonymous said...

Me too, DW! (Although I may just be mixing up Gregs...)

rsf :D

Greg Lestrade said...

The doc could never be considered a curse.

Anonymous said...

And he wouldn't be a side benefit, either. Definitely the main advantage.

Then again, I don't know what you could possibly be cursed with to qualify for your own Doc Hotson. Excessively good taste, perhaps?

I'm hoping breakfast will revive me.

Anonymous said...

As long as there's lots of coffee you might have a hope. Which part of the triathlon are you hoping to watch in person?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

We are, currently, watching the cycling.

Anonymous said...

Just checked the news feeds and it sounds like you've got plenty of reasons to be cheering.

rsf

Desert Wanderer said...

Sherlock, are you taking notes on their positioning for further application to your own rides?

Sherlock said...

They were girls and their bikes weren't like mine.

Desert Wanderer said...

True, but the principles of aerodynamics are the same no matter what you're riding or, whether you're a girl or a boy. Like when you are on a tire swing and you lean in or lean out and it changes how fast you spin.

Anonymous said...

Just woke up again and looked at the triathlon results. Twelve minutes between the first person to finish and the last one? That must have been one heck of an exciting race. I watch the Boston Marathon most years and I don't think I've ever seen that many runners come in that close.

Sherlock, was the crowd really loud? It always is in Boston.

rsf

Sherlock said...

They cheered and shouted and banged on the rails the most for the one in last and she wasn't even Team GB.

Anonymous said...

Well, the person in last always needs the most encouragement, right? And besides, when they've gone past everyone in the crowd can go have some lunch or ice cream.

rsf

Sherlock said...

They were doing laps and we weren't allowed ice cream and Lestrade told me off but later he said sorry and I hope we can get ice cream later.

Anonymous said...

It takes a very good man to say sorry for mistakes a very good role model aswell.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well no one should be afraid to admit they were wrong. I was just tired and Sherlock didn't deserve to be snapped at.

Anonymous said...

Being tired is no fun. I hope you can get a nap, L. And Sherlock, I hope you can get some ice cream, too. But if you can't go out for any, maybe you can make some at home.

Anon Without A Name said...

I hope you've managed to get some sleep before you shift tonight, Lestrade, and that tonight is quieter than last night.

pandabob said...

did you manage some sleep Greg or has the olympic medal madness kept you up all day?

I hope work goes ok :-)

Small Hobbit said...

You expect me to type correctly with three gold medals?

Hope tonight goes quietly L.

Greg Lestrade said...

I just got to work in time to catch Mo Farah's victory. Just amazing. What an amazing run. And such a nice bloke.

And thanks, I did get some sleep, yeah.

Anon Without A Name said...

SH - madness, utter madness. We're sitting here yelling at the telly :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I really hope that in the morning all these people remember what they're celebrating and let go of a few of their stereotypes and prejudices.

Anon Without A Name said...

Lestrade - I hope you're right. You remember that MP who tweeted about "multiculturalist crap" during the opening ceremony? His twitter feed has been flooded tonight :-)

Fabulous, wonderful day today in the Olympics for Team GB.

And Michael Phelps has been pretty handy for the US in the swimming as well :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Good.
ALmost tempted to make myself a twitter account just to comment myself!

I'm still in awe for the teenagers in the swimming - breaking all those records.

Mycroft said...

You don't need a Twitter account.

Greg Lestrade said...

generally, or to comment to him? (I agree, generally.)

Mycroft said...

Generally. Or Facebook. Or any of those.

Greg Lestrade said...

No, I know. Don't worry.

John H. D. Watson said...

Heh. Does that go for me as well?

Mycroft said...

Yes, especially you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah!

John H. D. Watson said...

Especially me! I don't know, kids these days...

Anon Without A Name said...

Hello Mycroft :-) Are you having a good summer holiday? Why "especially John"?

Greg Lestrade said...

He's right, Danger. I mean, you started blogging and now look where we are.

Mycroft said...

Yes, thank you. It's been very enjoyable so far.

Especially John because I think people on Twitter would make him angry quite often, and he loses his temper enough just reading the newspapers.

Greg Lestrade said...

good pOint Mycroft. He'd have to upload a whole set of glares at the least

John H. D. Watson said...

It's not fair when you two gang up on me; I can only send half of you to bed...

Greg Lestrade said...

... I wish you would send me to bed!

so when's Federicorn and Murray on? I assume I wont get any sleep with you shouting at the telly?

Anon Without A Name said...

Mycroft - good, I'm glad :-) Do you have any plans for the next month or so? I know you have an astronomy trip planned, but I'm not sure if you'd set dates for it?

I know what you mean about John - I'm often made very angry by things I read on Twitter, but usually they're the things I want to be angry about (bigotry or cruelty, for example). In many ways, I like the opportunity to be righteously angry in a way that I can't really be elsewhere in my life.

But I agree that it's not a place to be if you want equilibrium in your life :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - I wish I could send you to bed! Who do I petition at the Met for that kind of authority?

Probably around two tomorrow. There's only one match ahead of them. I can always go and watch it with Mrs Hudson...

Anon Without A Name said...

John - I thought Lestrade was the one you could send to bed. He always seems to, when you tell him to :-p

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless I think he did mean me. Or at least, as you say, I'm the one he does it to. Just not when I'm on nights, sadly.

John H. D. Watson said...

I was going to say I only try to send him to bed and he's got to agree with me or he doesn't go...but I've just realised that's pretty much true for Sherlock and Mycroft too.

Anonymous said...

It's probably easier for you to take L to bed than to send him there, yes?

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

Undoubtedly. And preferable as well.

Leaving this comment for the morning lestrade.

Happy birthday, may it be the best you've ever had. Accept the love and spoiling from the boys and from John as well as you can and try to enjoy the fact that they are enjoying spoiling you.

It's already the 6th in London, so here's a little something in honor of the occasion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjF1bG5LUcs

(I really hope that headache is long gone, but if the dregs are lingering, you might want to turn down the volume before playing. :)) Have a wonderful day!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LESTRADE!

May it be full of cake, fun, the boys, your boy, and etc. Hope it's the best one yet.

REReader said...

Maz! I hope this means your power is back on!

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday, Lestrade! I can't send you a paper greeting card, but if I did it would be this one.

And tea.

Or possibly crumpets.

Okay, so maybe I didn't quite absorb all of the advice from your links about England...

;D

Happy birthday anyway!

Happy birthday, Lestrade. And many happy returs. :)

Desert Wanderer said...
