18 April 2013

I hear you're feeling down. Well I can ease your pain.

John's been laid low by something he ate. Might go an arrest the chef.

Anyway, he let me know in time that I could gather up enough paperwork to wallpaper most of the street and pop in to see him on the way to fetch Sherlock.

Mrs Hudson had said she'd do it, but I'd promised Sherlock I'd go and see his painting from art club, and I'm not sure when I'll next get the chance, so I thought it'd be nice if I went.

John seemed mainly pale and tired and trying to convince me he was fine when I came back to change and drop work off. So...well, sleep was probably more useful than anything I could do.

Sherlock and I went up to the allotment. I dug out a veggie bed. Sherlock dug a deep hole.

A lady was working nearby, tying up canes. Sherlock, being Sherlock, headed off to interrogate her.

She was very nice. She has an exceptionally neat allotment. Which is something we aspire to. Only ours has more holes which look like bomb-craters.

I'm not sure why she has a row of flowers. I mean, no reason why not! but maybe they're good for something else she's growing. I'll ask.

She also asked if I was Sherlock's Dad, and if 'the other young man' who'd been digging our patch was his big brother! Sherlock found this hysterical. And promptly outed us by telling her that John and I were getting married. She clearly thinks I'm a cradle-snatcher now.

She recovered quite well. "Like Elton John!" (except with more hair, I'd like to point out.)

Anyway, yes, I think we'll be going back to her for some top growing tips, because everything of hers looks rather healthy and organised.

We have now fertilised ready for planting our own asparagus next week!

In completely unrelated news - had one of these today.

They're made in Brixton Prison. Inmates can learn about baking, get some skills, then hopefully go straight once they're out. Bloody lovely it was, too. (Lemon treacle slice, if you were wondering.)

Work's still a bit tough. Dealing with cases where children have died is always hard. And some of what's coming out it's...close to home.

I'm just very happy that John and the boys have made my life so great now. Every day I'm thankful to them all.

I remember mum saying you were supposed to plant marigolds with tomatoes... It keeps...something away.

also she's mad, I do not look anything like that young.

love you. thank you for being so nice today. except when you offered me marmite which was cruel

Greg Lestrade said...

Full of healthy vitamins and stuff, Marmite.

Want me to get your stiffyscope and listen to your innards?

I think she might be a little mad, yes. But she's probably only seen you from afar, and you do look young!

pandabob said...

That allotment is impressive, she must really know what she's doing and someone who can give you good advice is worth a lot I always think.

I'm sorry works rubbish Greg and that its one of those cases that travels around in your head.

Hope you're on the mend John :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock's going to start calling it a stiffyscope too you realise

Greg Lestrade said...

And everyone will know he got it from the doc in his life. Why would I ever be talking about a stiffyscope?

How are you feeling? You look slightly less...grey.

John H. D. Watson said...

You mean apart from everyone who knows you?

I feel...extremely empty. It's not bad.

Greg Lestrade said...

...I don't know that many people.

Want a cuddle? It may involve me resting paperwork on you...

Anonymous said...

If Sherlock is curious about why she's growing flowers with her vegetables he can look up "companion planting". There are some good combinations to discourage pests and attract the useful bugs at the same time. A lot of herbs work, I've read, which is why we think of certain foods going with certain herbs for flavor.

Glad you're feeling a mite better, John.

And I need to erase "stiffyscope" from my brain before I say it in front of the kids.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - yes please

Greg Lestrade said...

I was the one curious, RSF. Like I said, I meant to ask her, but we got distracted.

Danger, want more tea? soup? for me to stop resting files on your head?

John H. D. Watson said...

what kind of soup?

Greg Lestrade said...

we've got...homemade chicken, lamb or tomato, or broth...which is...animal flavoured. forget what.

Or out of a tin...mushroom, more tomato, minestrone (weird word - it just means soup!) and some miso.

Anonymous said...

Ah, that's what I get for drive-by blog reading.

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

tomato please.

...Any chance you can get it wtihout moving at all? psychically maybe

Greg Lestrade said...

home made tomato or tinned tomato?

And I would...but I can get up now, prize what will eventually be a large black sparkly pom-pom chicken out of Sherlock's hands and put him to bed while the soup's heating... multi-tasking, then return?

John H. D. Watson said...

your tomato. We have a lot of soup.

Okay. Can I have tea too?

Greg Lestrade said...

Course you can.

Hope we grow lots of tomatoes for more soup. Way better homemade, don't you think?

Sherlock demands you be better by tomorrow. I've told him Mrs H might take him to school.

John H. D. Watson said...

Much better.

will do my best to be better by tomorrow

Sherlock said...

LESTRADE PUTS MARMITE IN HIS TOMATO SOUP

Greg Lestrade said...

grass.

Bed! Sleep. I'll see you in the morning and give you a sick doc update.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't mind as long as I can't taste it.

Greg Lestrade said...

You can taste it. it's the yumminess. And what makes it better than tinned stuff.

C'mon, bed for you, too. I can do paperwork in bed with you dropping off on me just as well as I can here, and then you won't have to get up again.

Marmite in tomato soup? Is there a recipe? (Homemade tomato soup is always better than canned.)

ro said...

Maybe she's growing flowers to feed bees!

Nice idea, that Brixton bakery. Needs to be more initiatives like that.

Hope you're feeling better quickly, John.

Anonymous said...

How do you have that many homemade soups at once? I don't even have that many store-bought soups at once. (Are they fresh, or do you make them and can or freeze them for later? I'm curious now.)

Feel better, John. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Freeze them in serving sized portions :)

Am doing early morning paperwork. My life is so exciting...

REReader said...

VERY early morning! O_O The only way I'm ever coherent at 4:00 am is if I haven't been asleep yet.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, it was. Had to get it done though.

pandabob said...

How goes the day Greg and how many coffees have you had so your eyes are still open? ;-)

I hope you're feeling better today John and that you're having a good day :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I've had four coffees. Day is...okay.

John definitely looked more his usual colour this morning. Don't know who won the battle of taking Sherlock to school though.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of colors, why is the T-rex at the London Museum of Natural History purple?

rsf

pandabob said...

Four doesn't sound all that much coffee for such an early morning!

I'm glad your day is ... okay :-)

ro said...

RSF - it's not, but it is coloured by dramatic lighting. You can see clips on youtube.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've had another 2 since...

You feeling better love?

Anonymous said...

My niece just posted a picture -- that must be one heckuva big purple lightbulb, then!

rsf

ro said...

RSF: the lighting *is* pretty full on. I took some pics, you can see the lighting change colour if you click through.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - yeah, mostly. Just tired and trying to get my appetite back. How are you doing?

Anonymous said...

John, do you have any applesauce around? It's a bit better than dry toast, and usually stays down.

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

We've probably got some apple sauce from when we last had pork ... Maybe?

John H. D. Watson said...

I think that may've been a while ago. Found it just now and it was growing a faint green goatee. I'll stick with the marmite-contaminated tomato soup.

Anonymous said...

Did you save any of the goatee for Sherlock to examine? Or are you trying to avoid any fun with fungi?

John H. D. Watson said...

Ah, I didn't think of it. Probably should've, but I'm sure our fridge will produce more for him soon enough.

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't diss the marmite or you won't get more soup.

Greg Lestrade said...

And I'm doing okay. Migraine threatening. Just going into interview for a bit.

Sherlock said...

Are you interviewing the man who pretended to have a gun?

Greg Lestrade said...

No mate, sorted him out yesterday. This was a witness to something. I'm done now though.

What are you up to? Are you looking after John?

Sherlock said...

Yes even though he fell asleep again and it's boring but I'm being really good. Are you coming home soon?

Greg Lestrade said...

Well he needs to sleep to get well for a fun weekend, so is say that's a fair trade for being boring now.

Is he asleep right now? What are you doing - apart from being good.

Sherlock said...

I'm drawing frogs what are you doing

Anon Without A Name said...

I've been watching the news from Boston - hoe all our Boston people (RSF, KHolly, I know - anyone else?) are OK.

Glad you're feeling a bit better John.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm filling out paperwork for the interview I just did.

Echoing Nameless in hoping all you Bostonites are okay. We got the message of an officer down this morning. All sounds a bit chaotic. Hope it's wrapped up soon with no further casualties.

REReader said...

Drawing frogs sounds interesting, Sherlock--and very considerate of John, for sure! Do you have tadpoles in your pond at school now, or is it still too early?

I hope your threatened migraine has receded, L.

REReader said...

One of my Boston friends was on lock down last I heard, since she lives in an affected area, but so far safe. Apparently they are after a group of people, and pretty much know who they are going after. It's...I'm not sure what it is.

Anonymous said...

I'm stuck in the house. They've locked down the entire city and more towns nearby. It looks like the zombies are about to arrive out there. (Except by my house, where the stupid contractors are still doing their noisy construction things.)

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I heard it was total lockdown for the whole area.

I guess it's one way of trying to reduce casualties. It's not something we ever do here, but I hope it works.

REReader said...

Stay safe, rsf!

Anonymous said...

It's not like it's common here, only happens when there's a big manhunt on where the suspect has been rampaging. Hopefully it won't last too long. I think they will get this guy eventually, one way or another, but I hope they take him alive and without anyone else getting hurt. It would be nice to have some answers eventually about why everything happened the way it did.

Anonymous said...

I think they're concerned because the guy they did get had explosives on him. I just wish the one who is still out there would surrender.

rsf

Sherlock said...

if I were there I would catch him and then everyone would be okay. the dogs could definitely find him.

We don't have tadpoles yet :(

KHolly said...

I know you would Sherlock thank you for the offer.

I snuck out for 5 minutes to walk the dog and there were 2 dozen assorted people loitering in the park and the ice cream truck went by. What is wrong with these people? If the law enforcement have said it will make their jobs easier by staying inside then STAY INSIDE!!

I'm ok, just kind of freaking out listening to the sirens in the distance for the last 8 hours or so.

REReader said...

Stay safe, kholly! (I know what you mean about the sirens. I'd just as soon never have to listen to fighter jets flying over Central Park again.)

I'm sorry you don't have tadpoles yet, Sherlock, I guess it's a bit too early yet. If you know when you saw them first last year, you'll have an idea of more or less when to expect them this year. Your school will practically have a menagerie before the schoolyear ends, what with all the pondlife and also chicks!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock - have you and John bought some dinner, or planned some? Or do you want to tell me what you want?

Sherlock said...

Can we make risotto? John likes that.

Greg Lestrade said...

course we can.

Is he still asleep? Is he on the sofa or in bed? And does he look comfortable? Don't wake him up as long as he looks okay.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm awake now, mostly. Risotto sounds nice.

I hope everyone in Boston is... as okay as you can be, under the circumstances.

Anonymous said...

Kholly, I know what you mean. I've got a construction site nearby and I can hear them clanging along like nothing is happening.

John, I'm doing okay. Cleaning house, actually. So silver linings. And my friends in town are all managing well too.

I hope you're feeling much better tonight.

Sherlock, we have lots of dogs here helping to look, but I bet you're right that your dogs would be excellent at the job.

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

Good, because it's what you're getting :) Be in in a second.

Glad you're okay, KHolly, RSF.

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger, you up for some risotto stirring for a minute?

John H. D. Watson said...

Sure, I can do that. What kind is it?

Sherlock said...

It's pea and asparagus you have to keep stirring or it sticks that's what risotto does Lestrade's being sick make sure you put parmesan in loads.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh no... Ask him if he's all right?

Sherlock said...

He said he was fine and I shouldn't hang around toilets.

Greg Lestrade said...

just a headache i'll be fine in a minute.

John H. D. Watson said...

...Right. Well, come and stir risotto with me instead then.

Anon Without A Name said...

Oh, heavens, that doesn't sound good :-(

John H. D. Watson said...

L - all right, love. I hope you're okay. Let me know if you want anything.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm fine, I'm back. Sherlock, hope you did a good job being stirring supervisor.

REReader said...

Is it that the migraine's attacking you again, L? Feel better.

Anonymous said...

Are you two sure you're not sharing something besides risotto?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

We share many things.

Anonymous said...

As long as it's not pathogens...

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

food poisoning vs. migraine. Think we just share bad timing.

Anonymous said...

Well, I hope you both feel better by morning.

The stay home request has been lifted in Boston but they haven't caught the guy yet. Going to be an interesting day tomorrow.

rsf

Anonymous said...

Well I was listening to the radio until I couldn't take it anymore...and my internet won't let me stream police scanners. Listening to them set up something around the boat where they think the suspect is. I hope they find him without any further casualties; there's been quite enough death already.

Very much hoping all my Boston friends are okay, and feeling rather concerned for all policemen and firefighters ever. Heard some reports that some of the dead at the explosion in Texas were first responders.

I hope you gentlemen feel better soon.

Piplover said...

According to the news, they have him cornered and know where he is now, RSF. Hopefully this gets resolved quickly and no one else gets hurts.

Piplover said...

Just heard, they recovered the guy alive. It's over. Thank God.

Olli said...

GO BOSTON.

Lestrade, could your folks at the Yard have gotten that done quite so neat? Twenty-six hours from announcement to capture. Tell me that's not pretty good.

(Am leaving aside the lockdown and the chaos. I'm still really proud of my friends.)

Olli said...

PS, hello, I've been lurking.
PPS, so sorry about the grammar, Mycroft.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm glad it seems to be over - and that there were no further casualties. Good news to wake up to.

Olli - impossible to say! Yes, it is good. Although London has, at times, suffered very heavily from terrorism related bombings, and individuals using bombs, you can't really draw comparisons.

pandabob said...

What are you up to today Sherlock? Is it nice and sunny with you?

I hope work treats you ok today Greg :-)

Sherlock said...

Yes it's sunny and we're going to go to the allotment in a bit so John can see the hole I dug and so we can check on our seeds we planted and maybe we can plant other things too and I hope there are other people there we can ask what to plant and we might have to get some net to stop creatures eating OUR vegetables.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers, AnonyBob.

Have fun, Sherlock. And you, John.

Anonymous said...

Are you going to plant a tree in the big hole, Sherlock?

Sherlock said...

I want to put an apple tree with a different sort of apple growing on every branch in it that would be the best.

Anonymous said...

That would be cool. It's great that there are so many kinds of apples out there, and that you can graft more than one kind to a single tree. My favorites are Macintoshes, Granny Smith's and Winsaps. Which varieties do you like, Sherlock?

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

You out at the allotment, Sherlock? Has John buried you in the hole? Met any other allotmenteers?
