Out of all the people, you wanted me the most

Well...I managed it. Escaped Sherlock's bedroom, after much questioning about our intentions for the weekend. Obviously, being Sherlock's birthday, it has to be better than everyone else's... well, we hope we won't disappoint. You know, if we actually do anything...

Got my hand slammed in a door. Only a bit, not enough to break anything. But irritating. Sherlock is disappointed, obviously, that it's not broken/many colours/fingers in jars. Hopefully he'll realise that I sort of need the hand, to ride the bike, to go on any holidays which might happen...

Went for a run the other morning. Got up stupidly early. Sherlock and John probably didn't appreciate it ;) but I needed to.

I love swans. And at the moment there's great big teenager swans about. Same size as the grown ups, but still brown. Can't make proper swan noises, still sound like cygnets. I don't know, remind me of the boys - look all grown up, but not really. Makes me think a lot, seeing Mycroft - 15 years old. And in some ways, so mature, so grown up, but in others, still a boy. Still got a lot of education ahead of him, if he chooses it. I left school when I was his age now, got a job, left home completely a year later and came to London. It's just unimaginable, looking at him. I mean, he's far more sense between his ears than I ever did, and I still wouldn't want him out on his own. Makes you wonder, what people thought of me.

Anyway, I've got 4 days off now, after a very good week. Good convictions, good arrests, most of the paperwork done, happy team, happy public.

I should change that tag though...

An early morning run sounds like a wonderful way to start the day and if you get to see swans as well then even better :-)

I'm glad you've had a good week at work, good results and happy people are all you can ask for really.

And yes you should change that tag :-)

I know what you mean. And yet I remember being his age and feeling completely grown up. Very odd.

Four days! Even if we weren't going anywhere, it'd be wonderful. Not that I'm saying we're going anywhere, obviously.

Oh yeah, I definitely felt grown up. I wasn't...but I felt it.

And yeah, four days... all I can think of that we need to do is some more baking, to keep us going...nothing special.

John H. D. Watson said...

Right, yes. Nothing special...

I've got an odd feeling that tomorrow morning he'll lasso our ankles and tie us to a bus or something to drag us out of bed at about 4am...

John H. D. Watson said...

You can take him for an early morning run. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

ha, I might! Except if we do go somewhere, don't want him falling asleep on the back of the bike! Mind you, he probably wouldn't, given how excited he gets.

Good luck tomorrow, guys. I have to admit, once I get over the actual leaving of the warm nest, I do like quiet early mornings with the mist and the birds.

John H. D. Watson said...

I suspect the run and any theoretical bike ride would only begin to tire him out...

Greg Lestrade said...

I suspect you're right. So we should probably go to bed, to have a hope of keeping up with him...

John H. D. Watson said...

An excellent plan.

All my best wishes for tomorrow, and the other three days too! Not sure if I'll be around, but I'll be thinking of you!

What a gorgeous picture, here's hoping you get the chance to take some more over the next few days, not that you're going anywhere, of course. :)

Hope your hand isn't too sore this morning, Greg, and that you weren't dragged out of bed quite as early as 4.

Have a great weekend wherever you spend it. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

It wasn't 4 but nor was it long after.

He Is now in school, despite protests.

Thoughts are with a PC now in a serious condition in hospital after a driver he was trying to stop ran him over in the early hours. Hopefully the scumbag will be caught and have the book thrown at him very soon.

Olli said...

Hit and run?? Ugh, ugh, ugh. Yes, all our thoughts are with the PC. As for the driver, I hope you set Sherlock after him, as well as all the resources of the department. No escaping that.

I'm taking a page from your book and running this morning. Eagerly awaiting news of the birthday weekend.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not as eagerly as some ;). I don't know how Mrs N will control him today! He announced as we got there that it was the last time she'd see him as a 7 year old.

pandabob said...

The last day of being 7 is a big thing and not something you would want anyone forgetting about ;-)

Good luck with your weekend whatever the plan is :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well as there's nothing else to do we could leave Sherlock with mrs H and I could drag John off for a romantic weekend? Stop gap before our honeymoon?

John H. D. Watson said...

The glare you're going to get for that..

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah, I did indeed get a John mini-me grade 2 glare for that ;)

Still, I see it as building immunity. Lots of mini Sherlock glares will sort out my defences against big John glares.

Now off to fetch Mycroft and have cake until he's finished in school :)

Have a lovely weekend, all - and enjoy the cake :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

We...have arrived.

And are going to the pub for dinner and a pint.

pandabob said...

A pint of something strong might be your best chance of getting Sherlock to sleep tonight ;-)

Glad you've arrived safe, have fun wherever you are :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

He's currently being bribed by his nanny and a promise of banoffee pie and ice cream...

John H. D. Watson said...

Shhh. You'll get me in trouble with the Board of Nannies or something. It's not bribery, it's...tactical deployment of pie?

Greg Lestrade said...

It was a perfect deployment. Five stars. And a kiss.

Happy Birthday Sherlock. Have a brilliant day. Enjoy being 8.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mrs Hudson sent a card with us that had a 'birthday boy' badge, so no one in the east of England will get away without knowing about it ;)

We're off for a bike ride.

AnonyBob - I dreamt about you last night!

Happy Birthday Sherlock! Have a wonderful day.

pandabob said...

Yay for a birthday badge, no birthday is complete without something to tell EVERYONE its your birthday :-D

As to the other thing, dare I ask?

Have a fun day :-)

Tina said...

Happy birthday Sherlock, and enjoy your day! Have fun on the trip and yes, everyone should know it´s your birthday, so the badge is a very usefull present!

Sherlock said...

Thank you and it's brilliant and we're by the seaside and we've got bikes and we had pancakes for breakfast.

Ro said...

Yay! Happy 8th birthday, Sherlock! Bikes & seaside & pancakes sound brilliant indeed! Have a great day!

Kestrel337 said...

Happy Birthday, Sherlock! It sounds like you are having a wonderful time!

Greg Lestrade said...

picnic-ing on the beach :)

Later going to bike to the supermarket for Sherlock to decide on cake ingredients, now we've checked our temporary kitchen and decided it's suitable for cake baking!

Joolz said...

Oh wonderful, there's nothing better than picnic-ing on the beach. Are you going to brave it for a dip too? :)

What's the betting most of the ingredients will be chocolate related. ;)

Have fun and enjoy the rest of your birthday, Sherlock. Are you enjoying being 8 so far.

Piplover said...

Happy birthday, Sherlock! I hope you all have a wonderful time!

Greg Lestrade said...

Yes. Chocolate. And chocolate. With chocolate :)

One hyper 8 year old on the way... as if we didn't have one already!
