‘Cause she’s a cruel mistress

Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink...

Six, so far, people.

That's times John has got up and tried to fill the kettle from the tap, since I've been at home.

It seems we're not getting water back until tomorrow, at the earliest. I really wanted an exceptionally long hot shower, too...But there we go.

Today has been long. Filled with many arguments with other officers, the CPS, families of suspects... I did want to lock certain people in a room together by the end of it, let them fight to the death.

Sherlock is being oddly joyous at not having to wash - it's not like we force him into a bath every night! I think he's just enjoying the novelty.

He and Mrs H made some lovely flapjack this afternoon. It's got smashed up nuts and all sorts in it. He took great joy in smashing things with a rolling pin, apparently.

Have a little video. Share it around.

Some scrote smashed one of the Met's police dogs in the head with a baton, when it caught him. The dog - Fuzz - didn't let go though, and is now on sick leave, poor thing. Still, amazing that the dog held on. Can't say I would have.

I think I'm off at the weekend. Mycroft's home weekend after this one, so maybe we can get to the bike place. It would be fantastic to get out there while it's really muddy and slidey. I love riding off road in those conditions - even if it does mean falling off more! It's so much fun. And even Mycroft doesn't mind too much - when he's dressed to get filthy.

No water all of a sudden is a real pain! Last Thursday, on arriving home from a long day out, I found the street swarming with police officers and I couldn't get the car near the house. It turned out that someone had put a large hole in the gas main which of course was really rather dangerous but more importantly it was annoying!! I couldn't use the cooker and the kids couldn't have a shower. Much like Sherlock though the lack of shower was not seen as a bad thing by the kids ;-)

I hope you can get to the bike place soon and make the most of the damp cold weather before things are so cold they are hard and its not so much getting muddy that's the problem but getting bruised if you fall.

Six, so far, people.

Seven...and probably that was the last, I've got a call.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm going to leave the kettle filled for you.

Good luck. Hope it's okay.

John H. D. Watson said...

I love you. Are you waiting up?

Greg Lestrade said...

...probably. Give me a call if you think it'll be a long one? But don't worry if you're too busy to. You know me, I'll be asleep on the sofa or something.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll call, don't worry.

Greg Lestrade said...

...and I've tried to do the washing up twice since he's gone.

pandabob said...

Not being able to wash up is a pretty good upside to no water but I hope you find something else to do to fill your time until John gets home :-)

REReader said...

It's a reminder of how much water one uses, I suppose, or so I tell myself when we get stuck without it--but really, a less object lesson would do!

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, good reminder how fortunate we are.

Hope John has a chance for a wash before he comes home if he needs one though.

REReader said...

My brother lives in Israel, which is basically desert, and the first time he came back to the US after moving it was raining. And he looked at the downpour and said, "And you just let it all go into the sewers?!?!?!"

I hope so, too. And I hope you get the water back as early as feasible tomorrow!

Piplover said...

No water is no fun. When I was Korea the water would frequently go out, as well as the rest of the power. And when it would come back on, it would be brown and mucky. Ick. I took to microwaving bowls of water and sprinting into the bathroom to throw them over my head to wash my hair.

If the water is going to be out for much longer, maybe a hotel stay? It would be almost like a little holiday, only one staying in town.

Kestrel337 said...

Pip, I was thinking a hotel would be a nice option, too. I remember when we used to go to a cabin up north and used bit buckets of lake water for everything. Boiling, and tablets, and dipping it out of the 'clean' bucket to make hot chocolate.

John H. D. Watson said...

Home at last. L's asleep on the couch. Still no water. Pretty sure I smell offensive. Goodnight, everyone.

REReader said...

Goodnight, John--or good morning! I hope you get your water back fairly early...

Joolz said...

Morning guys, Hope you get your water back really soon and until then you'll have to make the most of cafes to get your fixes of tea and coffee and make the most of any other facilities. ;) A hotel definitely sounds a good plan if it's going on for any length of time though.
Have fun being water-free for a while longer, Sherlock.
Hope your call wasn't too bad last night, John, and you manage to catch up on your sleep later. Have a good day.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, I'm going to grab a shower in a meal break at work. Hope it'll be back on before John is fully conscious, if he manages more sleep once Sherlock's at school.

pandabob said...

Did you get your water back in time to get ready for the school run John?

How goes your day Greg?

Have you had a fun day at school Sherlock?

Greg Lestrade said...

It's raining so hard here John could wash Sherlock's hair on the way home from school if he took the shampoo with him ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

We do have water. It came back just before I left to get Sherlock from school.

REReader said...

Oh, YAY! It will be a much nicer weekend that way. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

You must be soaked.

Joolz said...

Speaking of Sherlock's hair, do you still have problems getting him to allow it to be cut or does he not mind now.

Hope you both dry out quickly, John & Sherlock, and maybe it'll dry a bit before you bike home, Greg, although I'm sure having a nice hot shower will be blissful to warm up anyway.

Enjoy the freedom to have many hot drinks. ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

We were indeed soaked, but dry and warm now. Sherlock's doing his homework, and there is tea.

Joolz - he goes back and forth on the haircuts. Sometimes it's all right, or at least he's resigned to it, and sometimes, like last time, he was...not happy at all.

Greg Lestrade said...

We are slowly convincing him that it's up to him, roughly speaking, what he wants done. We're not going to forcefully shave his head or anything!

Sherlock said...

Maths homework is boring because everyone knows the answers so you don't even find out anything good I don't like it but John says I have to do it and I've got flapjack with cherries in it.

REReader said...

Homework can be boring, but teachers need it so that they can see how everyone is doing--and just repetition is good for remembering. And if you know all the answers, it goes fast.

Flapjacks with cherries, yummm! Are these the ones you made?

Greg Lestrade said...

Just leaving. Hope you've done all your homework, Sherlock! (Mainly because you can't ask me to help with maths, because I hate it too ;) )

Danger - make sure you're nice and warm for me to put my hands one when I get in ;)

Sherlock said...

Yes we made them with oats and honey and cherries and some have chocolate chips in too.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - hope I was sufficiently warm...

Greg Lestrade said...

You were. And rather wriggly.

I do wear gloves on the way home, I promise. I don't just freeze my hands for you.

John H. D. Watson said...

I believe you. I know the gloves don't do that much when it's cold out, unfortunately.

REReader said...

Mittens are supposed to be warmer than gloves, they're just terribly inconvenient...

Sherlock, that sounds absolutely delicious! It's making me want to do some baking this weekend, if I can finish my work. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

If you get cold, we can buy you some of those huge bar mitts.

I just don't notice my hands getting chilly.

Although I do believe you drink extra tea so your middle is all warm for my hands to find ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

It's really the only solution. Tea usually is.

Sherlock said...

Can I have some tea? I want some of your gunpowder tea.

Greg Lestrade said...

...do you have ANY manners left, Sherlock?

Sherlock said...

PLEASE

John H. D. Watson said...

I think it's a little late for you to be drinking anything with caffeine. You can have some tomorrow if you want to.

Greg Lestrade said...

The glaring was brought to an abrupt halt by some truly massive firework explosions outside, so Sherlock had to rush and glue himself to the window.

REReader said...

Fireworks are more fun than glaring. ;)

Unknown said...

wow, fireworks?
I have severe baking envy now, after googling flapjack recipes.
S

Greg Lestrade said...

I think we'll have fireworks for a while yet. At least this weekend, then maybe a bit of a break until Chrostmas/New Year.

Kestrel337 said...

Is that chinese gunpowder tea, John? Hubster drinks it. I like it okay, but prefer darjeeling if I'm not having just PG Tips. But I usually prefer coffee over anything.

Greg Lestrade said...

John has most of a cupboard dedicated to tea.

I think some of it's just random leaves he picks off the floor in the allotment ;) I'd be terrified to bring a drugs dog in here...

John H. D. Watson said...

Kestrel - yeah, that's the stuff. I may have...few more sorts of tea than one person is generally considered to need.

Greg Lestrade said...

To be fair, it's not like he buys them all. Sometimes people pass them to him in unmarked packages, with a nod and a funny handshake. Quite often it's Mrs Hudson....

John H. D. Watson said...

She does have a startlingly wide variety of soothing teas...

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I mean, I do keep an eye on you..looking for dilated pupils, or the munchies... but obviously I always put dilated pupils down to your being overcome with lust every time you look at me, and everyone in this flat eats too much cake, sooo... guess I'll just keep an eye on the greenhouse at the allotment, check those really are tomatoes.

John H. D. Watson said...

With all the fuss about that man stealing tomatoes, I'd hate to think how bad it would've been if they hadn't been tomatoes.

Greg Lestrade said...

...tomatoes.

Have I forgotten something?

John H. D. Watson said...

Maybe? The allotment had a tomato thief for a short time in the summer. I don't know if anyone took ours because I don't count our tomatoes. But apparently some people do.

Greg Lestrade said...

....I don't know if I never knew, or if I've forgotten.

And how on earth did that happen without Sherlock insisting we staked out the allotment with a nightsun and a taser and the dogs, waiting for the criminal to strike??

...or have I forgotten that too?

(I think I prefer being married to a man who doesn't do a daily tomato count.)

John H. D. Watson said...

I might not have mentioned it? I just remember thinking that people were getting unreasonably worked up about a few tomatoes.

Greg Lestrade said...

Did they raise an angry mob? With burning torches and pitchforks?

I'll assume anyone wanting to nick our produce probably needs it more than we do.

I can't believe the tomato plants are still valiantly trying to produce tomatoes here and there, despite looking fairly dead.

John H. D. Watson said...

They were more of a grumbling mob. With spades and trowels.

Greg Lestrade said...

I can imagine...

I guess we have to....dig things, for winter? Or something. Need another Reg tutorial.

John H. D. Watson said...

Or something, yes. There's definitely...something involved.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, c'mon, bed. Sherlock wants us to go for a run tomorrow so he can ride his bike. Probably a good idea. I imagine. Running. Stuff.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't know if running is a good idea, but bed definitely is.

Piplover said...

I may or may not have an entire cupboard filled with various kinds of tea. I may also have various tins filled with tea. In my world, there is no such as thing as too much tea. It's all good!

I hope you all have a lovely day tomorrow.

Greg Lestrade said...

We have run. Sherlock has shouted at us to run faster.

We're now making up for it with coffee and pastries. Sherlock has a bowl of hot chocolate. He may begin to swim in it at any moment.

pandabob said...

That sounds like a delightful start to the day :-) I'm guessing you have less rain than us or Sherlock would have been able to swim alongside you as you ran ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

It's pissing down now. Wasn't as bad earlier valthough running was ver squelchy.

Greg Lestrade said...

...and now there are blue skies! Love this country :)

Sherlock wants to go out for a ride, so we might.

John H. D. Watson said...

Somewhere out of the city maybe?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, sounds good. Shall we just head out, see where we end up?

Sherlock, change into your super hero outfit. I must find a phonebox to turn into the Cake Crusader! (John is Dr Hottie all the time...no need for change!)

Dr Feelgood said...

Nice secret identity you've got there, Watson. Hope no one at work hears about it...

John H. D. Watson said...

...A very long ride. Possibly to Alaska.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hahahahaha!! Brilliant!

Hey Dr Feelgood. Glad you've taken The Habanero Hottie under your wing ;)

Dr F said...

Despite the cape and spandex, he has been a pleasure to work with.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah - I'd think the cape and spandex made it more pleasurable ;) Although probably against health and safety. Terrible trip hazards, capes.

Seriously, though, I bet he's brilliant at it. He's always dead modest when telling me about jobs he's been called to.

Dr F said...

He's good. Very steady, good at calming people down. You can see it in any scene he walks into. You can't teach that. The job's a good fit for him.

Greg Lestrade said...

Between us we've made Dr Hottie glow a nice red, to the tips of his ears...

He says we have to go now. Before his blush becomes so furious people begin warming their hands by the glow.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yes, please, let's go.

Unknown said...

Have fun on the bikes! I'm cooking today, for a change.
Welcome, Dr. F, it's nice to hear such a good report of John, even if it's not really a surprise to his fans. :)
I too have a cupboard full of various teas. I think it's not too much as long as the cupboard door still closes!
My morris lads are watching this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFfn8L2saYI
Which makes me wonder if PG tips makes fun ads too... I have both in my kitchen.

Greg Lestrade said...

We went. We got coffee in a pub. We're home in time for dinner. There are still fireworks going off :)

pandabob said...

We're just about to have our fireworks :-) we couldn't have any on the day because I can't keep both kids safe and deal with the fireworks on my own so we're having them now :-)

Sherlock said...

We're having a pie I like pie and I want Lestrade to make beer soup it looks nice.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hmm. I might. Maybe when Mycroft's home to help. I'm not sure you'll like it though.

Kestrel337 said...

Beer soup? I've heard of beer-cheese soup, topped with popcorn. Glad folks have had a good day.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, beer-cheese soup, with petit choux au fromage. I would like to try and make it, but I think I'd need help!

Sally said...

John, I don't know why DI Lestallion is laughing at you and Dr Feelgood.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. When you put it like that, I probably deserve it, don't I?

Greg Lestrade said...

You definitely deserve it :)

It's nice, to know you're getting along okay! You're too modest when you tell me stuff.

John H. D. Watson said...

I just tell you what happened! Being factual, that's all.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, having seen you work, I extrapolate.

Will Dr F still be on your side once you're through the training bit? I mean, do you guys meet up, talk about stuff?

John H. D. Watson said...

The meetings may involve more pubs, but yeah, I think they'll still happen. He just won't have to sign off on my progress anymore.

Greg Lestrade said...

good. I just want you to have someone else to talk to, you know?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, it seems like it'd have the potential to be quite a lonely job - especially if I didn't have you. I don't think I've seen the same people more than once or twice this whole time.

Greg Lestrade said...

Definitely. I just know I won't be that good with helping you talk through some stuff. Hopefully Dr Feelgood will be. Or anyone else you want. Murray, maybe?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, probably. We talk about most things sooner or later, although recently it's been a running tally of who's treated the most drugs/alcohol cases in a given night. He's winning, of course.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, well sadly some drunks don't drink enough to render themselves unconscious - only they'd drink more, faster, it'd save us a job when they do something stupid.

Still, you will get the odd 'interesting' case, I'm sure.

I dunno if either of you gents have seen this yet:

http://doublemesh.com/men-posing-like-motorcycle-models/

I... let's just say that I am attracted to both men and women, and I feel like neither sets of photographs comes highlights the attributes of men and women that appeal to me. You know, things like strong shoulders and arms and legs, soft lips, the curve of hair around the ear or on the neck, those sorts of things that people have regardless of gender. These made me think, I guess I want to say.

Also, they're really quite funny... but they made me think, too.

Then again, perhaps you'll see the bikes first! Oooh, I hadn't thought of that until now.

AftSO

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, those are great. Sadly a vast amount of motorcycle advertising does rely on half-dressed skinny women. Which, as you can imagine, has kind of failed to appeal to me...

Does a good job of highlighting the ridiculous 'modelling poses' which seem so popular with...advert designers, I guess?

I'll try and get John to pull a sexy pose over his bike next time we're out ;)

Anonymous said...

Now there's an interesting idea for your own private 2014 calendar ;-)

Sherlock said...

We did the silence to remember people in the wars and people like John and we watched on TV and next year maybe we'll go to the place in London where they put all the poppies and the soldiers are and the Queen.

REReader said...

That's a good thing, Sherlock--we don't have the tradition of a silence here for Memorial Day or Veteran's Day, and I think we should.

Anon Without A Name said...

I missed the silence today, Sherlock, but we observe it at work if the 11th falls on a weekday so I'll be doing that tomorrow. We were at Whitehall around midday, there were ex-servicepeople everywhere, most of them wearing medals. I saw one lady with a big label attached to her poppy that read "evacuee".

Are you doing anything fun this afternoon? The weather's glorious, isn't it?

Sherlock said...

I got you out of the spam.

We're doing another silence at school because Mrs N gave us a letter to take home that said so and we wear our poppies then too. I said John should come and talk to everyone about wars and his medals but Lestrade said I'd have to ask and respect it if he said no and I haven't yet. We're at the allotment.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - did you ask Mrs N, or was this an idea you came up with after you got home?

John H. D. Watson said...

AftSO - I wonder what sort of instruction the men got in those photos. Only about three of them look like they're trying, and I can't tell if the others are looking awkward on purpose or just because they can't do the poses that well. It's interesting either way.

Sherlock said...

She said we'd be doing about war soon and she knows you're a soldier and I bet no one else has been at school.

Greg Lestrade said...

You've got the makings of a politician with that answer, Sherlock - completely ignoring the question in favour of an answer you think will be persuasive!!

Anon Without A Name said...

Thank you, Sherlock! Did you have a good afternoon at the allotment? Fantastic gardening weather, I would have thought.

Sherlock said...

I did snail racing. It was cold. John's written about it.

REReader said...

I went and read about it--5 minutes is long time to watch a snail crawl--especially in the cold. Are you having something to warm up now, Sherlock?
