Still the fox is growing older, As he calls over his shoulder to the night

We went out for a jog today. bumped into a sponsored run thing for Sport Relief, so we decided all to do it - including Sherlock.

He literally ran rings around us. We thought he'd find three miles a bit far/boring. Now we're not so sure. He was so full of energy, dancing about, running off, coming back to us, running off again. He must have done at least 2 miles. And at the end we all got a medal :)

Now, in other news - anyone know where you can get 4 finger nitrile gloves? There's an officer on another force who had to have a finger amputated, and now needs gloves for crime scenes/searches etc. They're stuck!

Found this, and laughed a lot...our two get terrible confused when they drop things and then can't get under the sofa to retrieve them, or if you pretend to throw a ball but don't let go of it..

My cough is...boring. but I feel a million times better. Which is good, as I've got to do my assessment next week. My eyes passed with flying colours - no worse than last time, just reminded me to wear my glasses more. Hmmm.

Got nights soon, too. At least it's not so cold now. The allotment does actually look like someone cares for it again, and we're hopeful that our beans and peas and spuds will all flourish soon. The soil's still a bit heavy - very clay-y round these parts. But with some sun on it, everything (meaning weeds) seems to be doing ok.

We'll get some tomatoes in once we're ready. Someone gave us some lavender the other day, which we've added to our herb-y corner :)

Now, toad in the hole is almost cooked, with roast spuds and parsnips and veggies! Mmm.

I love toad in the hole! But I'm not sure what you're talking about is what I'm talking about. Mine is a piece of bread with a hole cut into the middle with an egg cooked in the hole. Yours?

John H. D. Watson said...

I love those dogs...

Greg Lestrade said...

Nah, toad in the hole is sausages cooked in a big tray of batter (batter like you'd use for yorkshire puddings.)

We had a cat that on one occasion was playing with a mouse it had caught, threw the mouse in the air and it went backwards over the cat's head landing behind him. The cat sat for ages looking up in the air waiting for the mouse to come back down.

Greg Lestrade said...

I somehow didn't think dogs would be tricked..like they'd be able to smell it or something? I love the different reactions though :)

John H. D. Watson said...

SH - ha! Did the mouse just run off?

Small Hobbit said...

Yep, the mouse made good its escape.

Greg Lestrade said...

aaaaand, it's time for small people to go to bed.

Greg Lestrade said...

And how come I can be fine for ages, then suddenly go into a huge coughing fit, red in the face, only communicating via arm flapping, chucking up?

And why when I throw up does it make my eyes sting worse than CS gas??

REReader said...

:( Feel better soon, L.

Greg Lestrade said...

I feel fine, more than 99% of the time. Then it just grabs me.

Becca said...

Ugh, that's the worst. I hope you feel better the other 1% of the time soon.

Kestrel337 said...

Becca, I love that too, but we call it 'egg in a nest'. Is the batter for toad in the hole a sweet batter like funnel cakes? Or more like...I don't know what like.

L, your cough sounds extremely unpleasant. I hope it goes away soon!

I may have promised my kiddo that he could do a run with me for Cinco de Mayo, which is... (checks calendar) five weeks away. Eeep. Hearing that Sherlock enjoyed it makes me hope that we'll make it through, though mine's a bit younger than he is.

In our house a cough is a wonderful excuse for whiskey and honey, though it sounds like if you followed that prescription you'd be too far gone for work most days. Do feel better, L!

I do like dogs.

And I'm impressed with the progress on the allotment.

Having scored discounted tickets, heard the Soweto Gospel Choir tonight, which was marvelous. I pretty much love any good choir, any style, I like to let all the different voices and layers (I guess they're properly called parts or harmonies?) of the music just wash back and forth over me.

Which cheered me up after a "run" that was slower than usual and cut off half a mile short of my goal (3 mi.) because it just felt crummy. Ah well. Tomorrow will be a new day. And sadly, Sherlock's energy can't be shared out among the adults.

Have you lot got Monday morning sunshine down there? We haven't a cloud in the sky which made it cold this morning but it's lovely now :-)

Good luck with whatever the day holds for you gentlemen.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, nice down here. Bit more cloud now but still sunny :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Sometimes I wish a suspect went 'no comment' in an interview so I didn't have to listen to them.

pandabob said...

That doesn't sound good Greg :-(

Greg Lestrade said...

Ah, nothing I haven't heard before. Just very boring. Even his brief doesn't look happy.

I wish that when my weather app tells me "50 degrees and sunny," colorado wouldn't be all, "actually, today's a perfect day for snow." That was a really cold bike ride.

Ella

REReader said...

It's about 32F (OC) and sunny here now, Ella--we aren't supposed to get the snow until tomorrow. O_O (I mean, really, enough already!)

I hope everyone's been having a generally nice day (even with dull-witted suspects)!

Anon Without A Name said...

Kestrel - toad in the hole batter is flour, egg, milk and a dash of cold water (I tend to forget the cold water). Not sure what a funnel cake is?

Hope everyone's had a reasonable day. I'm knackered, no idea why, but I'm almost asleep here.

Becca said...

Totally exhausted here myself. Hauled into the city to see my surgeon's PA and got a cast change. The new cast is blue. I go back in two weeks to get my stitches out.

Have new theory as to why my pain is going up - we think it's nerve pain - so went back on my nerve pain medication, which I had stopped a few days ago.

REReader said...

I hope that works, Becca.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry Kestrel, I meant to answer. It's just yorkshire pudding batter, as Nameless says.

Nameless - only 4 days 'til the weekend ;)

Sherlock said...

I want to go on another holiday on a boat please and I want to drive.

Anonymous said...

Where did today go?
Same place they all do, obviously.

Don't you love when one's healthcare comes down to "theories," Becca? Hope this one is correct and that the nerves calm down and give you some peace. I'll assume exhaustion + changed med will mean good rest.

Sherlock's you're putting in suggestions for holiday planning? How long will the holidays last?

(Be here before we know it, amazing how that happens.)

fA

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sure we can manage another boating holiday at some point, kiddo. And I'm sure you can drive...a bit.

Cartlin said...

Wow, you all go on the best holidays. It sounds so lovely and warm there. I live in Michigan, and woke up to at least 1/2 inch of SNOW this morning. SNOW! At least the six-foot snow drifts are finally melting away when it does marginally warm up, occasionally....I'm quite jealous of your weather though. I hate when it can't decide whether it's still winter, or spring.

Cartlin said...

Oops, I've forgotten to introduce myself. I usually go by Acacia or AJ online, and I've been working on catching up with your blogs from the beginning for weeks now, and was so excited to have finally done it! You both are so amazing being able to keep up with doing blogs. I've tried, a couple times, but I eventually forget, never update, then just abandon it. Luckily without leaving any followers dangling in the wind....

REReader said...

Hi, AJ, nice to meet you--and I know exactly what you mean about winter hanging on! (I think spring has decided to give us a miss this year. :))

Kestrel337 said...

Thanks for the answers. Becca, I hope the new meds help.

Funnel cakes are made with a slightly sweetened batter, similar to american style pancake batter but thinner (still thicker than UK pancake batter I think). It is poured through a funnel into hot oil, in circles and spirals. After cooking it can be topped with powdered sugar, or fruit and whipped cream, or ice cream. It's a county/state fair tradition and, as such, has no redeeming nutritional value. None.

Small Hobbit said...

Becca - I do hope the nerve pain meds work and that you were able to sleep. I approve of the blue cast, it's my favourite colour.

AJ - nice to meet you. Lo and behold, it appears to be wet over here again, but I am very grateful for the absence of snow. Especially as I'm currently driving on my spare tyre whilst I wait for a replacement wheel - thank you pot holes.

Kestrel - funnel cakes sound marvellous.

L - since it is your blog ;) hope the cough has finally removed itself. Is today the day of your fitness thingy or is that tomorrow?

Greg Lestrade said...

Today. Cough has largely gone. Rain is miserable... I'm sure I'll be okay.

Hi AJ, well done for catching up. You probably know more about my life than I do now...

Becca, hope you're okay this morning.

Hope the fitness test went well.

Hoping for a good, rested day for you, Becca.

Hi, AJ.!

Good morning or afternoon or evening to all, as applicable.

Becca said...

I slept like a log last night. And I'm lowering my narcotics successfully. So far all is going well.

REReader said...

Good to hear, Becca!

Good luck on the fitness test, L--or, if it's over, I hope it went well. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Just off to fitness test.

Danger, have lost my phone. Might have left it at home? Hoping Sherlock doesn't have it...

John H. D. Watson said...

It was in the fridge. I just got it out a few minutes ago. Behind the milk.

Greg Lestrade said...

Right...of course.

Wnder if I put it there or Sherlock did...

John H. D. Watson said...

I feel like Sherlock would've hidden it better, but who knows...

Greg Lestrade said...

I was half asleep this morning, and Sherlock was being incredibly indecisive as to what he wanted for breakfast, which isn't like him. Normally he knows and expects me to know already...

Becca said...

When I was a toddler, I hid my mother's keys in a box full of plastic cups. Of course, I also locked her out of the house once. I was kind of an evil toddler.

Hope you're awake enough and do well on your fitness test L.

Cartlin said...

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do great. Better than I'd do on any fitness test...

Greg Lestrade said...

I did okay, thanks. Not as well as I'd have liked, but, as he put it 'Best in your age group'

(There was only me in my age group)

on the way home, Danger.

Anonymous said...

Take the positives where you can get 'em - and losing most of a week to some respiratory illness surely didn't improve your showing.

fA

REReader said...

I'd be happy with "best in your age group," myself! (I'm dubious about my chances of passing, to be honest.) So hooray and confetti!

(BTW--I don't believe Sherlock would hide someone's phone in the fridge...not without a good reason! ;))

Greg Lestrade said...

Sadly what Sherlock considers a 'good reason' doesn't always agree with the rest of the world.

The footy is making me depressed again.

Anon Without A Name said...

You're not the only one, Lestrade.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha! I did nearly say something, but I didn't know if you were saving yourself from the score for later ;)

Anon Without A Name said...

Nah - facing the horror as it happens :-p

Greg Lestrade said...

me too, a rollercoaster of horror...

Cartlin said...

But do you really think it was Sherlock? Or just pure absentmindedness in the face of your looming test.

Joolz said...

Hi to all, including a welcome to AJ and a yay for feeling a bit better to Becca & a congrats to Ella for the permanent job and a very British 'jolly well done for being you' to everyone else. :)

Well done on passing your test, Greg, I think giving yourself a bit of leeway for recovering from illness is allowed even if you were a bit disappointed to only be best in your age. ;) I'm sure we'd all agree that you are best in any age, especially that lovely man right beside you. ;)

Well done on getting your medal, Sherlock, did you take it to school to show your friends. Are you having helpers at Art Club today or are they working?

Have a great day everyone. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

AJ - no I don't think it was him. He'd have told us. He's a very honest kid - sometimes to his detriment!

Cartlin said...

I figured. I was an honest kid by default, due to an inabiity to lie without smiling. All my mom would have to do was look at my sister and I, ask "Really?" and the grins would break....It continues to this day.
