Merry Christmas, everyone!
I hope you all had a fun/peaceful/nice day (delete as applicable), whether you celebrated or not.
I had a lovely day. Everyone was very kind about the food, and seemed to enjoy it (there is barely anything left.)
We made two Christmas cakes - Sherlock helped ice ours, Mycroft helped ice Mrs Hudson's.
I think they...differ in style in a pleasing way.
Ours/Sherlocks:
Lovely icing to make a snowy scene, and chocolate trees.
Mrs H's/Mycroft's:
Sugared almonds and icing.
I got lots of nice things, including far too many very tasty things to eat and drink.
Sherlock wants to show you his boots (which he hasn't taken off all day):
And his new t-shirt that Mycroft bought him:
Very appropriate!
And now, having been at work all day, I'm going to sit down with a nice wee dram and relax with John. Mycroft has his head in a book, Sherlock is working out what he wants to bake with his edible glitter. Both dogs are still trying to be hoovers, although I'm sure they've had every possible edible crumb long ago.

Both cakes are wonderful. Chocolate trees! How lovely. And the pattern is beautiful on Mycroft and Mrs H's cake. Now I'm all hungry!
Between the boots and the tshirt, Sherlock is well set up to look very stylish in the coming year. Are the boots only for riding, or will they do for other things as well?

I agree with you, rsf, both cakes look amazing, and I love how different they are!
I adore that t-shirt--and I can absolutely understand why Sherlock is so taken with his boots! He's well set for any kind of weather with those. :)
I really think Mrs H could open a bakery if she wanted to. That cake was impressive.
Yeah, it was beautiful.
The boots are mainly for riding, but fine for everything else too.
Has Sherlock gone to bed wearing the boots?
And Zeph, re your comment in the last post, glad to hear that today was better, it's good to have reminders of family.
He was persuaded out of them, eventually. They're by his bed.
John and I have just fallen asleep on the sofa, only to be woken by a dog attempting to drink my whisky.
He was persuaded out of them, eventually. They're by his bed.
That is just so sweet. :)
And I think that it's a VERY good thing that the dog woke you before getting tipsy!
He'd have been in his jacket too if that flat hadn't been so warm.
The dog was trying to climb up us to reach the whiskey in my hand, so it had no chance, really.
Wouldn't have thought they'd like whiskey. Just proves they really will eat anything.
well, it might not have liked it once it got there...I'm not about to let it find out!
True. Maybe he just wanted it because you had it.
Mmm, because they've eaten everything else going in this flat. Luckily they're not built for stealth.
He'd have been in his jacket too if that flat hadn't been so warm.
No question how he feels about 'em! (That's just lovely. And adorable.)
We'd be in trouble if they were. And cake-less. I caught Phobos halfway onto the table earlier going after cake, and he knows better. Usually.
I'm fairly sure they operate on the dog (and sibling) rule of 'If I lick it, it's mine'. That's what used to happen in our house with cakes...when Mum turned her back you'd lick your finger and wipe it on the one you wanted, so your brothers and sisters wouldn't take it... didn't always work then, either.
I tried that with Harry's bike once when I didn't have one yet and she wouldn't let me borrow hers. Did not work.
ha! I can imagine.
I swallowed one of Danny's Lego men once. That worked...
you going to take me to bed? Promise these days you're the only man I swallow...
Ha, yeah. Bet he never wanted that back.
I am, before we fall asleep again.
Ha! That is a classic amongst siblings, Lestrade, but you do become inured to it rather quickly in my experience!
This xmas, my (20 yr old) baby brother resorted to dipping his (naked) big toe in a piece of cake he wanted.
My sister and I just watched him eat it with disgusted looks on our faces. You can't really compete with that, I don't think.
Anon, I am very glad my baby brother never thought of that one.
I'm sure Mycroft would never be so uncouth. But Sherlock would eat it anyway.
:D
I hope you're having a good day , L--and John, Mycroft, and Sherlock, too. :)
Hore-frost in cake form, twice. Those are both far lovelier than anything that comes out of my kitchen.
And suddenly, the 'dibs wars' that went on in my own childhood seem remarkably tame.
Am laughing at the booze hound.
Busy. Lots to organise as I'm off and then on nights.
Danger, Jo and Lisa asked us round for tea tomorrow afternoon if you boys wanted?
(I hope you're not on on New Year's Eve?)
Its nice that you're managing to fit fun things in around work Greg :-)
L - yeah, that'd be nice. Sherlock wants to bring spider biscuits.
Sparkly spider biscuits?
RR - yes, seeing out the year on night shift.
Anonybob - hope youre having a nice time too.
In every colour of the rainbow, I have no doubt.
Got some presents for the three of you from Molly, too.
Is it a brain???
I dont think so, mate.
Are you coming home now? i want my present.
yes, seeing out the year on night shift.
Boo. Oh, well, much better than Christmas Day!
Did you decide what color glitter you'd like to use on the spider biscuits, Sherlock?
Yeah, it is better.
Rather see in the new year with John than with my team or a dead body though, to be honest!
I'm shocked--shocked!--to hear it.
;)
Next year...next year it'll be pizza for Christmas dinner :)
Actually, I'm sure Mycroft and Mrs Hudson will make something amazing. And I'll spend the day having boiled sprouts and soggy xmas pud with fake brandy sauce in the canteen...
I don't know much about Christmas celebrations, since I don't celebrate them, but is there any reason you can't have Christmas dinner in the evening instead if in the middle of the day?
Next year can worry about itself Greg, for this year you've done a great job of cramming as much fun as you can into the time you've had :-)
You could have xmas day on a different day next year maybe? given you don't have the Santa problem. Christmas is about the people you share it with not the date on the calendar after all :-)
Enjoy your evening.
AnonyBob - I thought I'd leave it to the boys what they want to do next year. Postpone/change it by a day, or whatever they want.
RR - No, it's just traditional to have it at lunchtime. Mainly because it can last a long time. We might have to do that part on Boxing Day or something... presents may take priority over eating, even in Sherlock's view!
As AnonyBob says next year will take care of itself. For the first time in three years daughter-in-law had Christmas Day off and next year as my daughter said we'll have to fit celebrations round two rosters, as she too should be working by then. (That really is a scary thought.)
That sounds like a good plan Greg although I see the double celebration being high in Sherlock's list of options ;-)
Well, you certainly have plenty of time to work it out--and as Anony said, I don't see Sherlock (or anyone else) complaining about two celebrations instead of one!
Yeah, I think you might be right, AnonyBob.
Anyway, home now, off for two days, nights after that, so I'll get to see the boys a bit more.
Can't sleep. Doing paperwork in bed... this isn't my favourite bedroom activity.
I'm sorry you're having a wakeful night, L. Just say if you'd like a distraction of any kind!
(Oh, and what were Molly's gifts? Any brains? :))
this is distraction enough, and John's awake anyway.
All helps to get me a clean desk by the New Year.
No brains, no. A set of 'comparative hearts' for Sherlock - fish, mammal, bird, reptile and amphibian, set in resin.
I'm sure John us by far the best company. ;)
The comparative hearts sounds fascinating! Better than a brain, really, seeing as the most interesting part of brains is what they do, and for that they need do still be in people. :)
What did Molly send over for John and Mycroft?
rsf
Mycroft got a set of huge beetles and John got the life cycle of a butterfly - which is actually quite pretty.
And what did she give you?
I don't know much about beetles (other than there are SO MANY kinds), but my mother does a live caterpillar-to-butterfly thing with her first grade class every year, and then they release the butterflies. It's very cool.
Those are pretty amazing gifts. I think Molly should possibly get some sparkly biscuits too, if Sherlock's baking. Do you know if she likes spiders?
rsf
The butterfly life cycle is great. I think Sherlock's given her spider biscuits before and they were well received, but L will remember better than me.
Yeah, she's had them before.
