Well...today was long.
Work was mercifully quiet, which means I got a lot done.
Then off to see Mum. She seemed...well, she was a bit more talkative, mainly because she had two of us there to tell off and boss about. But that's still progress, right?
Sam was there, which was nice. He's still quiet, like he always was. But we...get on okay. We're just virtual strangers to each other. He asked about John and the boys, awkwardly, because he was trying to use words that wouldn't offend, and he's clearly not used to it. But he still made the effort. I appreciated it. A lot, actually.
The ride down and back wasn't too bad. Lots of water about, though. So many floods.
And now...bed, because Sherlock will be awake before we know it, and chaos will take over, and there's dinner to cook and dogs to walk and presents to unwrap and games to play and doubtless many other things.
So Merry Christmas, all of you. And any of you who have a little light and warmth to spare, direct it to those not having such a great time.
(Now to go and try to tell Danger why all Santa's reindeer are girls...)

I'm glad it went reasonably well with your mum and Sam.
(Rudolph isn't.)
Rudolph isn't one of the 8 real reindeer. And possibly a boy, in some depictions.
I've never met a girl named Rudolph. Just saying.
I want you to tell me all about the girls you'd known called Cupid and Vixen now...
I did actually know a girl named Cupid once. Not Vixen though.
I've known a few girls called Vixen.
None of them were really called Vixen.
At least two of them weren't really girls.
It's not a name most people would choose for their daughters. Even if their daughters were reindeer.
Indeed.
C'mon, bed, before La Befana thinks you don't deserve any presents on 12th night and you get a lump of coal.
Bed, yes, perfect.
we've got just enough time to be naughty before we should start being nice ;)
Merry Christmas, everyone.
The happiest of holidays to all of you in the Holmes-Watson-Lestrade home--and to everyone reading whose celebrating today!
(I hope you get SOME sleep before Sherlock climbs in to open his one early gift!)
(I wrote "who's". I did! Stupid autocorrect...)
(And not leaving out your families and friends--or Mrs Hudson or Anthea or the security detail!)
Have a great day guys and everyone else reading this :-)
You too, AnonyBob. Hope your little ones enjoy it and have a fun-filled day, and you're not run too ragged!
We have had breakfast, and starting cooking prep. I'm on my second glass of champagne...(Mrs Hudson's fault.)
Merry Christmas to you, and have fun with unwrapping all the presents!
And L- glad the visit with your mum went ok.
Tina
PS: I got the lyrics immediately! Yay me!
Good morning and Merry Christmas! I hope Sherlock found a good present for unwrapping this morning, and the rest of you did too. Mother nature gave me my present. I got snow! (Well, a little anyway, but it's starting to stick to the car roofs!)

We're going to open our presents and happy Christmas everyone even if you don't celebrate it have a nice day.
Merry Christmas, all of you!
Thank you, Sherlock!
(And a happy one year anniversary to Argon and Mercury, too!)
My first present in my stocking was all the colours of glitter you can eat so i can make the best food.
That is an absolutely brilliant present!
Marry Christmas Sherlock :-) That sounds like an excellent present!
Oh, that's an exciting Christmas present, Sherlock. Do the different colors of glitter taste different or all they all just shiny?
rsf
I haven't tried them yet. Our dinner was the best I like sprouts and John doesn't but he ate some.
That was adventurous of John, then. I'm glad you had a wonderful dinner! What else did you have? (I like sprouts, too, they taste fresh. :)) And did you get--or give, or keep secret--any especially exciting presents?
(In addition to the edible glitter, that is!)
all the colours of glitter you can eat so i can make the best food.
And so I can worry less when the dogs inevitably lick it off the floor.
So, Lestrade. Tell me, why are Santa's reindeer girls (apart from Rudolph)?
Finally de-lurking (was too shy to post before).
Merry Christmas to you all I hope it's been a wonderful day.
As for Santa's reindeer being female - it's true. At this time of year, only female reindeer have their antlers, and possibly young male reindeer as well, which also explains why Rudolph has antlers.

LyricalSinger - merry Christmas to you too. Hope you stick around. :)
But then couldn't some of the original eight be young male ones as well? I don't know, I always assumed they were about half and half, and this is warping my world view. Although I suppose 'young' is unlikely if they're immortal magical reindeer.
(Sherlock thinks I'm ridiculous for devoting this much thought to it by the way. I think Mycroft does too, though he's too polite to say so.)
Hi, LyricalSinger,
Yeah, that's the reindeer theory I was talking about!
I've devoted too much time to red wine and brandy :)
Heh. You and Mrs Hudson are a bad influence on each other.
Well, wouldn't want to warp your world view on Christmas, and considering the reindeer names, you're probably right about reindeer gender being a 50/50 split.
As for Sherlock thinking this is a ridiculous line of thought .... it's Christmas and while I'm just getting starting on dinner and all the fixings for my family, once it's done I won't have enough brain power left to contemplate anything more serious than Santa's reindeer.
As for Mycroft - such a polite young man!

I got a jacket and boots and a voucher that John made for a helmet but I have to choose it myself and then i can go on Lestrade's bike!
You're not the only one to devote attention to the question, John--I posted a link to a Snooes article about it over on your blog. :) And there really is a page on the official Alaska State Dept. of Fish and Game devoted to Santa's reindeer! (Our tax dollars at work. :))
Wow, Sherlock, that is indeed a super exciting bunch of presents!
Happy Christmas to one and all. Even if it's not your religion's holiday, it's a good day to add to the balance of goodness and light.
Hah, I got the song lyric right away.
Edible glitter sounds marvelous, and the jacket and boots that you've waited so patiently for! Mycroft, was the day good to you as well?
Very good, thank you. I got new collars for Phobos and Deimos because they needed them very badly, and Mummy gave me a French translation of the Book of Fixed Stars. The illustrations are beautiful. (You can find many of them with a google image search if your'e interested.) I hope you're having a good day as well.
Everything's your fault, Danger. Mrs H and i are innocent!
Mulled wine?
That sounds lovely, Mycroft.
Did anyone else get a particularly special present? Do we get a picture--or at least a description--of Mrs Hudson's Christmas jumper masterpiece?
I'm glad you got your jacket Sherlock and the boots :-)
Mycroft your book sounds really interesting I might have a look for some images now peace has decended here :-)
John, Greg I hope you got nice presents but more that you've had the Christmas day you were hoping for :-)
Enjoy the rest of the evening all of you.
I've had a really nice day, yeah. Hope you all have too.
I even wore my antlers.
That's lovely! (Both things, actually. :))
Merry Christmas to everyone :)
I hope all of you have a lovely time with your families (and no catastrophes or major fights or overly emotional reactions to seeing inanimate objects).
Sherlock, edible glitter is the best kind of glitter. (You should try mixing it with poprocks and see people's reactions when they eat whatever you offered them ^^)
Today was the sort of day I thought only happened in films. Happy kids, happy adults who I wanted to be with, nice food, absolutely nothing more exciting happening than opening presents.
I can't think of any people who deserved that perfect kind of day more. Merry Christmas, y'all! :)
That sounds absolutely wonderful, Lestrade :) was it hard to pry Sherlock away from his presents when it was time to sleep?
I had my (nearly) everything is great kind of christmas yesterday. Today did kind of (emotionally) kick me in the gut though and I don't know if I'm sad about it.

Wow, Mycroft, those pictures are really fascinating. I Goggled them as suggested and the first one I found was Orion, and that's always been my favorite constellation.
I'm glad your family had such a perfect day!
Glad to hear you all had such a good day L, you deserved it.
Zeph, sorry to hear that the emotinal bits have got to you today - *sends good wishes*
Zeph - sorry you've had a tough time. I hope today is a bit brighter.
SH - Thanks, hope you did too!
Now, what's the betting any food will survive for when I get home from yesterday? Sherlock wanted Christmas pud for breakfast this morning!
12 days of Christmas pudding? Sounds tasty, actually. Is Sherlock ready to go get his helmet today? (I hope the roads are dry enough for him to get a ride soon.)
Your book looks wonderful, Mycroft. I'm going to see if I can get a copy.
rsf
I'm at work, so I think Sherlock will wait. Although I'm not certain.
He has an extra layer of degu cage to attach to the current one today, as a present to the goos.
John says that you can get helmets that are sparkly! I want one like that. I'm wearing my boots ALL DAY to make them be comfy.
You should come home I want to use the leftover panettone to make bread pudding with you like you said and John told me off for eating spare stuffing.
You can get sparkly ones, yes.
I'm glad you like your boots, and I'm sure they'll be comfy very soon if you keep wearing them in. Just not jumping on the sofa with them on.
I expect John only told you off because it must be near lunchtime now, and you can't fill up on stuffing. We'll see about making bread and butter pudding. Mycroft could help you if you really wanted to do it today, or we could do it later on.
Are John and Mycroft okay?
How do the degus like their extra cage space, Sherlock? And is it like a second floor, or a next-to sort of annex?
(A sparkly helmet sounds great!)
Back when I was a fledgling Kestrel, my dad rode a motorcycle and I was sometimes allowed up behind him. My helmet was all over blue glitter.
Thanks for that memory, Sherlock. I hope you enjoy riding behind as much as I did.
L and SH- Thank you. Today was great so got me over yesterday. I very unexpectately found photos of me and my grandpa (who died nearly 3 years ago) and then I found one of his rings on my pillow ( because I asked my Mum about it a couple of weeks ago). That was a bit much but it's good today. I'm happy I have a reminder of him with me now :)
Are the Degus happy with their bigger cage, Sherlock?
What colour of sparkles do you want for your helmet?
