When the metal is hot and the engine is hungry

There was a bat in Sherlock's school today. I think they found it fairly early. He was still talking about it when we picked him up... I don't know how Mrs N survived the day.

John and I had a fairly lazy morning - Sherlock was so well behaved this morning. He just sat in our bed, occasionally showing us things on the computer, so we got a lie in with a nice cuddle together.

Of course, we were then nearly late for the school run...but it wasn't a problem, as we just went on the bikes :) Sherlock was so proud to show people the bike, and his jacket, his boots, his helmet. He put them all very neatly on his hook/bench space in their cloakroom. Honestly, I was so proud of him, he was actually fairly patient when people asked him about it all.

I don't think he's posted about his jacket yet? He was so excited when he got it at Christmas. It's like this, but his Mum had one made in his size:

Anyway, as we were out, we went for a lazy breakfast and to buy John some winter riding trousers.

After that...well, john can be very persuasive, what can I say? Meant I got nothing of any use done at all ;)

I'm not 100% sure John's made up his mind about the whole FME course yet, but if he does go...I'm sort of excited about looking after Sherlock. Want to see how it'll go. I think Sherlock will miss John a lot more than he realises - I'm certain I'll miss him loads. But...well, yeah, I think Sherlock and I should get on okay. I mean, I used to get all my brothers and sisters ready for school. At least I don't have the plait Sherlock's hair...

Good thing, he'd never hold still for it.

True. Like you when someone innocently tries to kiss your ear and you leap about like an eel with an itch.

John H. D. Watson said...

Innocently! You do it specifically because of that!

Greg Lestrade said...

Nonsense. I do it because your ears are irresistible. Well, all of you is...

The idea of talking to Jo and Lisa tomorrow is scaring me.

John H. D. Watson said...

Of what?

Greg Lestrade said...

have you not been reading your blog today? Jo and Lis asked if were free for a coffee tomorrow.

John H. D. Watson said...

I mean... what are you scared of? my grammar didn't work out there.

Greg Lestrade said...

Listening to them talk about how they're almost totally done planning their wedding will make me realise we .....haven't planned anything yet.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ah okay. I thought maybe it was the passing guitar in public and having everyone put you on Facebook.

I suppose... we should decide how big outs is going to be first? Theirs seems pretty intense.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. Smaller than theirs! And the guitar thing scares me too...

Half of me wants to run away and it be just me and you. But ...well, it can't be like that, can it? And then it's gets complicated...

Seen the news about beefburgers from the supermarket being made of horse and pig meat? This is why we make our own stuff and buy from the nice butcher :)

Feel bad for anyone who avoids pork for religious reasons, though.

John H. D. Watson said...

Could be like that... Well, us and the boys. And probably Mrs Hudson or she'd poison our tea.

REReader said...

(Nicky and family? Mrs. Holmes? Anthea?)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah...you think? I mean...yeah, you're right, it could be like that.

And I'm keeping that comment to show Nicky to prove it's not me that doesn't want her there! Not that you don't want her there...but y'know, basically, I need to show it's your fault ;)

You don't want your dad to walk you down the aisle and give you away, then?

REReader said...

I have to say, Sherlock, your jacket is most extremely grownup-looking--I really like those stripes, and the styling!

Greg Lestrade said...

That's the point though, RR, you start thinking of more and more people to invite and before you know it you've got a big wedding.

As long as there's me, John and enough people to make it legal, I'll be happy at the end of the day.

REReader said...

Makes sense--and that can be a very special kind of wedding.

Sherlock said...

my jacket is the best! I picked it out but Mummy had it made for me because it only came in big sizes and all the ones my size weren't very nice.

I HAVE TO BE AT THE WEDDING I want to hold a ring or flowers or both

pandabob said...

I wanted a small wedding, I didn't get it but I think if I'm ever lucky enough to do it again it would be a small one after all its about the marriage not the wedding really :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Your mum is very kind to you, Sherlock. And you look very grown up in it.

I rather expect that John and I would both like you and Mycroft to be at our wedding.

AnonyBob - Yeah, I did too. And I didn't get it either. I just didn't want all the...attention.

pandabob said...

Gretna green followed by a party with no speeches or toasts or anything just all the people I love getting together and having fun was my plan. maybe one day who knows :-)

I hope you and John can get exactly what you want, you make good compromises with each other so I'm sure you will :-)

REReader said...

You have excellent taste, Sherlock, and a very nice mum to have that made special for you!

Greg Lestrade said...

why has my day off left me more tired than my days working do?

(John's fault, probably.)

Anonymous said...

if you will go stepping off the treadmill what can you expect?

REReader said...

You're just relaxed enough to feel how tired you are!

(That makes sense in my head. :D)

John H. D. Watson said...

It's always my fault...

Yeah, I don't know. There's Nicky and her family and then there's Murray if he ever comes home and Harry and...yeah. It spirals out of control and suddenly you've got ice sculptures.

pandabob said...

ice sculptures might be going a bit far John ;-)

John H. D. Watson said...

exactly my point!

pandabob said...

so what would be your perfect day if you didn't have to take into consideration other people John. If you don't mind me asking obviously you should feel free to ignore me or to tell me to get lost as always :-)

REReader said...

There is some middle distance between just the boys and ice sculptures and chocolate fountains!

If I ever get married, I could do smallish, but not really small--too many people would be deeply, deeply hurt. But people are different. Your family and close friends might be fine with it, or be fine with a separate party later--which could be pretty informal--instead.

Anon Without A Name said...

why has my day off left me more tired than my days working do?

Because you spent most of the day sh... shopping :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Anonybob - I dunno really. Just something simple.

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad you readily admit it.

I have such a strong vision of Sherlock's jaw dropping open at your last sentence and him yelling something like 'Ice sculptures OF ZOMBIES!'

But I can only find a praying mantis or a squid:

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - I think John mainly wants and excuse to dress up smart in his kilt.

John H. D. Watson said...

No kilts! Although if we do have an ice sculpture, I fully expect it to be of zombies.

pandabob said...

if you both want simple that's a good starting point John :-)

I'm not really sure what you have about John in a kilt Greg but if you had matching ones and mini ones for the boys that would be seriously brilliant :-D

Anon Without A Name said...

I think I can hear Mycroft silently screaming "Nooooooooo!" from here :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. I think you're right, Nameless.

Greg Lestrade said...

The only thing I have about John in a kilt is that he's worn one since we were together and I didn't see it - or even any photos of it!

John H. D. Watson said...

I've only worn it once at all, and I plan to keep it that way!

pandabob said...

he might have looked awful Greg, you never know. I know it would be some sort of miracle kilt to make that possible but you never know ;-)

(sorry Mycroft I was only kidding :-) )

Greg Lestrade said...

Unfair.

Nameless - you're right, John taking his trousers off and getting his leg over at every opportunity did indeed tire me out! It's hard work, picking out the right biking gear...

John H. D. Watson said...

Trying it on was strangely exhausting, I admit...

Greg Lestrade said...

Trying to get it on can be very tiring, yes.

Far easier with a kilt, eh?

Anon Without A Name said...

I imagine getting it off can be pretty wearing too. Not to mention the riding...

John H. D. Watson said...

The riding can tiring after a while... Wouldn't want to try it in a kilt.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not in these temperatures, anyway! That would be a chill wind...

Anyway, as a doc, you should now prescribe me with bed-rest, I think. Or I'll fall asleep right here.

John H. D. Watson said...

I have already prescribed it for both of us. That's what that note on the fridge said that you claimed was illegible. Come on.

Greg Lestrade said...

...thought you'd written a shopping list in arabic.

How do chemists ever give out the right drugs? Pure guesswork?

John H. D. Watson said...

It might actually be a shopping list. Although not in Arabic. Or it might not be. You'll never know...

When hubster and I got married, we decided that the ceremony was for US, and the party afterwards was for everyone else. So we had the ceremony the way we wanted it and at the venue of our choice, and took other people's preferences more into consideration for the dinner and dance.

Anonymous said...

I have some friends who got married in a very small ceremony, just them and their immediate family, and then had a giant reception afterwords. Maybe something like that would work for you?

It sounds like you all had a good day, I'm almost jealous. I ended up getting my back taped at the physical therapist, and now I can't even sit right. Bats and trying on clothes sounds much better!

Piplover said...

Found this for you, John. It's not exactly zombies, but still pretty cool! Sorry the link is so long.

My best friend had a small wedding, just her, her partner and me and her partner's best friend as witnesses. Family and other friends got told later.

Tina said...

btw. bikes, leathers and a bat out of hell?

Greg Lestrade said...

Exactly Tina!

if your day off's just been ruined L I hope everyone is ok.

Greg Lestrade said...

Anon - the helicopter crash? I haven't been called in yet.

Depends if the death toll rises and how thin stretched the emergency services are. It sounds horrific.

I saw pictures. The news made it all the way over here. Best not to watch any episodes of "Mayday" anytime soon.

On a (hopefully) happier note, when I saw the picture of you with a perm (my classmates asked me if I was ago, since I started snickering, or really just giggling while trying to keep it quiet) I immediately thought of this singer: http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Mika-music-10.jpg

pandabob said...

I hope you didn't end up called in Greg and that you're both having a great day :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

No, I didn't. Had a nice lunch with Jo and Lisa, now off to fetch Sherlock.

REReader said...

Have a fun rest of the day, even if it's without more bats tales... :)

pandabob said...

I'm glad you had a good day and I hope its continuing towards a lovely evening :-)

REReader said...

So what did Jo and Lisa want to discuss? Or is it private?

Greg Lestrade said...

Just a general chat, plus checking what I needed for playing, and if John didn't mind losing me for a few songs, and telling us a bit about their colourscheme and the order of events, all that.

REReader said...

plus checking if John didn't mind losing me for a few songs,

That was really very sweet of them. It sounds like a nice visit!

I hate big parties but I can't imagine not having my family with me at my wedding.

Greg Lestrade said...

For me, that rather depends how far you stretch 'family'. Nicky...maybe. The rest? I'm not wildly worried about.

Anon Without A Name said...

As I said over on John's blog - whatever works for you. There's no rules; it's your wedding, the two of you, not anyone else's. Do what you want, and stuff anyone who tries to tell you you're wrong :-)

Anonymous said...

It's a lovely jacket, Sherlock. I'll bet you wear it very well. :)

I stretch 'family' as my sister, my mother and step-dad, extended family would be uncles/aunts/cousins.

I'd have been hurt if I wasn't in my mom's wedding, sometimes it can be about the couple *and* about sharing a beautiful day with the people you love but everybody is different and I'm sure the boys and your sister just want you happy and won't care if they're there or not to see it.

Countless people elope everyday and it's probably the best option for them.
