Hello. I'm really, really, REALLY bored of coughing. Why on earth did I smoke for so long? That made me have a sort of...perma-cough. And I barely noticed it. Now, this has been going on...about a day and a half? And I am SICK of it. Still, at least my lungs aren't just big black blobs loitering about in my chest now.
It's probably all the running, terribly bad for you, exercise like that ;)
Anyway, John is tending to me with hot toddies. Sherlock is just telling me I have to be better. Which I will try. It is art club, after all. And days off. I'd say that I'll at least get a lie in... but probably not.
(By the way, whenever John says 'I want a lie in', or the like, I always respond with 'We can't have a lion, wouldn't fit in the flat/a lion would eat the dogs/A lion? Wouldn't that be cruel?' and the like. To which he always (predictable!) Responds by saying 'Lie In!' To which, obviously, I always say 'Lion? Where would you even get one?'...anyway, this can go on for ages, and he gets exactly like Sherlock does when you pretend not to understand him (or just...don't understand him) I can almost see him holding back the urge to stamp his foot...)
I think I might be delirious, letting you in on these odd snippets of our lives...
Anyway, I was horrible the other day. So have a lovely picture of John instead. Because he is.
I think he looks like an old-time movie star.
Right, can't remember what else I was going to say, because that picture is distracting me.
Got an eye test on Thursday. Hopefully no change. And the dreaded fitness test is next week...
Oh, I know! Theatre. It was great. Sherlock was transfixed, and it was a really great play. The stage span around - well, the middle of it did, where the big jury table sits. I loved the way they made the 'room' without any walls. And it was all just...yeah, really good. Doyle is still well worth looking at ;)
Sherlock is deep in the midst of scarecrow creation. And planning our entire summer holiday.
I've started watching this 'cure me I'm gay' programme.... It's horrific. I've no idea why I'm doing this to myself. I'm glad Sherlock isn't watching.

that is a lovely photo, thanks for sharing Greg and for sharing the lion story :-)
I hope the cough buggers off soon!
That is a lovely picture, and the lion story is hilarious!
I hope your cough gets better soon. Have you thought of getting checked for asthma? I never would have thought I had it, but I had a cough that kept coming back and wouldn't leave me alone, and when I finally went to the doc, they said it was exercise induced asthma.
Oh, what a lovely photo!
Tell that cough to go hide back in winter.
Don't watch it...
I think I probably have stamped my foot at least once.
So, will I get a lion tomorrow morning? ;)
I'm trying not to watch it...but....it's just about to finish. I'm horrified. I mean, I know the whole point was to discredit it, but it's just... that people put themselves through all that, to try to 'cure' themselves, because they've been told what they feel is wrong... it's just horrible.
Oh God, now it's a documentary on police! turn the telly off! It's like 'Gregory Lestrade, this is your life...'
It is horrible.
You can have a lion. Even a tiger if you like.
I'll stick with a doctor and a spider...
I am sorry that we exported our "pray away the gay" crazies abroad. So very sorry.
If you need to scrub your brain a bit, a friend of mine (who spent 10 years subjecting himsel to those programs) has a one man show called the Homo No Mo' Halfway House that I think is on YouTube. There's also something called the Ex-Gay Survivors Network (so, people who identified as ex-gay for some period of time, realized it wa futile, and are now ex-ex-gay) where people can share their stories where they know they'll be sympathetically heard, and find some healing. My friend's name is Peterson Toscano. He's worth looking up, though for the past few years he's been more occupied with studying queer and genderqueer characters in the bible, which may not be your wheelhouse. But I find it encouraging to know that there's a place for ex-gay survivors to go.
I hope your cough goes away soon.
Ella
(Peterson is now out and gay and married to a lovely man. His one man show illustrates some of the insanity of ex-gay programs. Not sure if I made that clear.)
Ella
Lovely picture of your husband. A gorgeous smile to equal your own gorgeous smile photo. The resemblance to an old movie publicity still is not your imagination.
I don't suppose you can delay your fitness test on grounds of respiratory illness? It would be dispiriting to cough/choke half to death during or after it. (I may be a bit doom & gloom and your cough won't linger.)
Horrid t.v. programs are horrid, whether they are well intentioned or intentionally exploitative. I will check out your friend on line Ella. Sometimes I feel the world is full of Just So Much and my brain is Just So Limited.
Sleep well, all.
fA
I await reports of whether there was a lion in the flat this morning.
How you doing this morning Greg? I hope you're well enough to make the most of your day :-)
Have fun at school Sherlock.
Ella - the things the NHS used to do were far worse than the 'praying' or other 'treatments'.
Coughing like...well, coughing. John is threatening me with a cold stethoscope. I assume he will warm it if he uses it in anger.
Sort of lions this morning. Lions with Sherlock sitting on the end of thebed, demanding I be better.
I hope you are well enough for art class, and give the good doctor no reason to frown over his stethoscope.
fA
Sitting at home, half watching the Budget...what could be more exciting?
Sitting at home, half watching the Budget, and drinking tea?
Hope you feel better soon, and that you can enjoy your day off.
Though by now you're on to the next thing, the Budget sounds nap-inducing, which is supposed to be good for germ fighting.
Based on track record, though, I'd guess you're doing paperwork. (and if not, you're either feeling terrible or you can stop worrying about progress on the work/life balance thing for a while.)
fA
I didn't bring any paperwork home. I wish I had... ;) John has me on the equivalent of a drip of tea, going at full bore. About two pints an hour, I reckon ;)
Hmm. In your home that saying "Food is love" might need amending to "Tea is love."
fA
Heh--I'm doing the gallons-of-tea thing myself, I figure I can just DROWN the germs. :) I hope it works for you, L.
That is a very lovely photo!
(Maybe you'll include a play or two in those summer plans... ;))
I hope you both feel better, and that your normal lives don't suffer too much. I find that's one of the most stressful aspects of being sick, not having the time for it.
Is it a sign that you're feeling a bit better physically, Becca, that thoughts about time are creeping in? Hope so.
Accepting that things just take as long as they take is a lesson I haven't learned yet, and I'm way past the midpoint of my life.
fA
I'm...not at art club.
John is. probably being deafened by howls of protest and slurs against his doctoring as we speak.
Oh NO. He is breaking it to Sherlock that you were deemed to unwell for art class?
Well, the parents of all those little germ vectors (one of whom probably is responsible for your current status in the first place) would no doubt appreciate that you aren't out infecting them.
fA
I am feeling a bit better physically - the new cast has helped immensely. But I was thinking about how stressed I was preparing for this surgery, trying to fit it into my life. Now that all that prep is over, I'm pretty relaxed.
It's s boring being ill or other people being ill and John keeps frowning at Lestrade because he's coughing loads and is on the sofa.
Oh, dear, that doesn't sound very comfortable, coughing lots. What did you do in art class today, Sherlock--I hope it was fun even if Lestrade was too ill to come.
We did pictures and models of daffodils. We bought some of the daffodils home for Lestrade too.
I love daffodils, they just say "Spring!" to me! It was really nice of you to bring some home. Were they all yellow, or were some white or red with the yellow?
They were yellow I've never seen a red one. we kept some in our classroom too.
Not all red, but they plant a lot of daffodils outside the Museum of Natural History in New York every spring, and most are all yellow, but some are yellow with red middles, and some are white with yellow middles. I like the all-yellow ones best, though. I bet they brighten up the classroom nicely!
The flowers are lovely, thank you both.
Sherlock, I just watched this YouTube video (21 Mind-Blowing Now-Extinct Lifeforms) and I thought it was something you might enjoy.
Hope everyone gets an early night and good sleep, especially those sick or recuperating.
fA
How's the cough Greg? I hope some good healing sleep was possible last night and that no one else has come down with it.
Good luck with the day whatever you're all up to :-)
It's...still coughing. Did sleep a bit better though, and I'm feeling a bit better today, regardless of coughing!
John has just been cruelly dragged away from me to work, so I'm making myself coffee and pottering about the flat uselessly.
Nicky has sent me a link, which Carla showed her.
I feel I may be being got into trouble by my sister here. Because really...small cute creatures who can't reach things? Who exactly am I meant to think of in this situation?? coughJohncough
http://animalssuckingatjumping.tumblr.com/post/79565329634/nearly-just-gah-im-too-cute-to-reach
Glad you got some sleep last night Lestrade.
Sadly, it rained here, which means my pain levels jumped beyond what the meds could cover.
why would your sister want to get you in trouble Greg ;-)
I'm glad you got some sleep but sorry the cough still won't go!
Good luck with work John :-)
Oh, Becca. Hope the pain ebbs.
L., Nicky didn't attach your husband's (the one with that *gorgeous* smile - thanks for that photo) name to mention of that link. So don't try to turf responsibility off on her! I speak for innocent sisters everywhere. ;-)
Glad you're feeling better, hope some more rest puts a dent in the cough. Don't forget to apply adequate quantities of tea.
Onwards, one & all.
fA
Now that you come to mention it L, I can see the resemblance. Not sure about the tail though.
Sorry to hear that Becca, hope it eases again soon.
I'm hoping John will take pity on me if I look pathetic enough ;) And Nicky didn't have to! It has been noted before that John and red pandas have a lot in common. (Well, if you count cuteness and short stature as 'a lot' ;) )
Glad to hear you're feeling somewhat better, L. And I'm sorry you're in pain, Becca. (When I had my thumb fused, the surgeon told me the deep bone pain would only last a few days--but he may have been going for the placebo effect.)
Who exactly am I meant to think of in this situation?
The degus? ;)
I'be god a code--or something like one. Bah, humbug. I shall attempt a return to sender.
A few days? HA. I didn't even have bones moved this time, and let me tell you, your surgeon should have this surgery and then talk to you.
That's pretty much how I felt about it! But opiates make me sick, so I guess he felt he had to say SOMETHING. (I do have a pretty high pain threshold, so I managed.)
You'll have to bring out the big guns with a full 'sad-eyed-puppy' look I should think after the panda teasing plus making him pass on the bad news to Sherlock last night about art club too. ;) ;)
Glad the cough is easing up a little, Greg, hope you feel better soon.
Hope work isn't too traumatic today, John.
Enjoy the rest of your day everyone. :)
Joolz - he does enjoy my big guns ;) Sad eyes I can do. Sherlock still hasn't forgiven me, even though I walked him to school this morning! We'll see what he thinks later.
Hope you're doing okay, Danger, and you're only treating nice people, not naughty criminals.
Did you pick Sherlock up as well Greg? Surely he must have forgiven you by now if you did :-). Is there a bit of secret Sherlock and DI time now or has John escaped work? Have fun either way :-)
I did, despite the good doctor's protests that Mrs Hudson wouldn't mind doing it.
I feel quite a lot better than I did this morning. He's now clambering about in the park. I'm being spoiled by other mums and drinking coffee. Hoping he gets rid of a bit of energy before we go home!
Fresh air is good for you as is coffee ;-)
I fear that getting rid of Sherlock's energy may take a little more than a run in the park but I hope it helps :-)
Fresh air is amazing. Today I decided to go out for a very short jaunt to the pharmacy and pick up some prescriptions. Took about 10 minutes total, I was on my feet for 5, but it's a beautiful day and I feel much better.
We're making John custard creams and I'm not letting Lestrade cough in them
I appreciate both those things
Custard-and-cough creams are lovely!
Sherlock is actually using the lid of the frying pan to hide his mixture from me, like a small warrior-chef with a shield.
How's work?
So busy. Feel like I haven't stopped for more than two minutes all day
I can believe that. Hope nothing's been too horrible.
Sherlock is actually using the lid of the frying pan to hide his mixture from me, like a small warrior-chef with a shield.
It is a shield--a germ shield! (Good job, that, Sherlock. On both counts. :))
Lestrade just coughed so much he went a funny colour and was nearly sick and John I don't want to clean up sick and you should stop working now
That sounds alarming, Sherlock. I'm sure John will be home as soon as he can.
You okay, L?
I'm fine.
If something that's over your head happens, Sherlock, and for some reason lestrade can't help, you should probably get mrs hudson. (I know you know this, but sometimes under stress, the most obvious solution does not occur).
Glad to hear you're fine, L.
Ella
Just locking up the bike, sorry guys.
It's fine, i was just coughing. Sherlock was shushing me and telling me not to be distracting. Business as usual.
Glad you're home though, because I miss you :)
Missed you too, love. Did you already eat? Should I get Chinese or something?
Bet the custard creams will be a great treat for John after a busy day.
Especially with tea and the right company.
fA
Nope, we haven't. there's baked potatoes almost due out the oven, with sour cream and chives, cheese and butter if you want.
You are a wonderful person, thank you
And we made crumble too! With apples
I know, I know, I'm a domestic God...
Need to keep you fighting fit and healthy to fend off my germs. :)
Crumble sounds great, Sherlock :)
I am so glad to be home.
need to talk about anything?...once I stop Sherlock stabbing that potato to death. Can't even shout at him. He was laughing earlier because my voice keeps giving up on me. Said I sounded like Mycroft ;)
It wasn't bad really, just relentless. Early to bed for both of us tonight I think.
Yeah. I might be using the power of my puppy eyes on you (which, by the way, you lot, seem to have worked thus far! He hasn't mentioned it!) for application of your lovely healing hands :)
It might be the obvious happiness to be home, as well as the puppy eyes?
When coming home feels good - you're in the right place with the right people. (When you dread coming home, you're in hell.)
Good sleep wishes.
(For you too, Becca)
fA
fA - I'm fairly sure linking videos of short pandas and referring to your husband is worthy of at least a cushion 'round the head ;) I might get Sherlock's pan-lid shield!
I'll wait till you're better.
And I meant to say yes to the back rub but that I might fall asleep in the middle...and then I fell asleep on you. Sorry. Now?
Ahh, so you're bored with being sick and want a bit of silly jousting with the husband? Just keep the rumpus down to levels that won't wake Sherlock!
fA
That's fine. It's just my shoulder really. Is it possible to strain your shoulder coughing? I don't know if that's what I did, but it feels like it.
I shall ensure you're surrounded by pillows to catch you as you fall asleep :) And return the favour of a backrub if you're still awake.
sounds ideal :)
Hmmm. John weighs in all responsible and care giving. Not so bad a resolution. Sleep well.
fA
We're clearly perfect for each other :)
We're clearly perfect for each other :)
A happy thought. :-)
fA
It's a beautiful day here. Hope it is where you are too. And before anyone asks, yes I'm back at work. Feeling much better. (For now!)
I'm glad you're feeling better Greg :-)
Have a good day everyone.
Good morning all. Hope you had a better night than I did.
Once the pain gets started, it's really hard to get back on top of it. And I'd kind of like to avoid upping my meds.
Sorry you're still suffering Becca. Hope it settles down soon.
Well, Becca, you know (or have been told by "experts") more than I do about pain management. So I'll only be a little bit pushy-mom and remind you to use that knowledge, even if you don't like all of it. I hope today is getting better, so you can sleep tonight.
Hope work lets you take it easy Greg.
