Well, Brazil haven't had a dream start, have they?? Mind you, neither have England.
Work is busy - it's been hot, money is tight, the football is on, summer holidays are coming... it's all a perfect storm for frayed tempers, too much alcohol, too little...I don't know, care? Empathy?
Have mainly dealt with serious assaults, recently. Mainly fuelled by drugs or alcohol and over money. It's all very...tiring, I guess. The daily grind of people stuck, living in the same places as their attackers, sometimes even with counter-allegations, sets of neighbours at war, people in the same house at war, kids at war. It really just gets you down.
However, returning home is always lovely, with the footy, Sherlock leaping about, frequently topless, as if getting fully changed after school is just too much time wasted.
Sometimes pursued by Maf, if her Mafness isn't too busy having a snooze in the sun. Although she is a bit brighter and less destructive now she's lost her lampshade.
Here's a pic of Mycroft's latest effort, given that I imagine not many of us will ever see this for ourselves...
And, on quite a different subject, here are some leaves we grew - and ate.
We have some leaf miners at work, although Sherlock is very good at eradicating them. I feel incredibly affronted when I find pests eating our plants...sadly they take even less notice of me than criminals do.
Anyway, the boy is on his way to bed, and then I need to cuddle my husband - and undoubtedly her Mafness, who is never too shy to muscle in on a hug.
We also need to discuss tactics for sports day...and I need to sort out some serious baking!
(And congratulations to Becca, for landing a new job!)

Good luck everyone. :)
Thursday is tomorrow. And I think someone reshuffled the days. Surely the only explanation??
Sounds plausible. I had Monday off work and it's confused me even more than usual. I shall work on the basis that today is Wednesday until told otherwise, but I'm not entirely convinced. It also appears that we are over half way through June; I think someone has stolen half a month.
This is clearly a far larger and more complex crime than I thought...
But on the bright side, it means we'll have Mycroft back soon, so I won't complain too much :)
Visit a witness. Upon leaving, discover a small child playing football/ taking too much interest in my car. Ask it why it isn't at school. Get told to f- off. Ask it where its parents are. Get called a paedophile. Ascertain parent by sudden stream of abuse issuing from a nearby dwelling. Explain to parent official capacity and enquire about child. Get told to F off and catch some criminals. Explain use of such language will not be tolerated. Get told to do certain things to myself, door is slammed.
Am now leaning against car protecting it from football being kicked at it, waiting for uniform to turn up.
And people say we aren't appreciated.
Charming. I hope the rest if your day goes better!
it is very hot here very
Danger, we need to go for a run tonight. I accidentally ate a slice of Black Forest gateaux.
And there'll be more tomorrow.
He accidentally ate an egg custard tart too.
These little mishaps do happen... ;)
I concur, most of the days in June and a good bit of May were sucked off somewhere surreptitiously.
I'm glad that family life and "accidental" ingestion of cake can balance out the rude tragedies of the job.
I am proud of myself, I substituted the gym and a great deal of invective-strewn venting for the drinks I seriously considered last night. (Because of family history I have a rule that I can drink all I want for enjoyment but never have more than one if I feel I 'need' it.)
Let us know as your mileage creeps up. I've been stalled out at between 4-5 miles, with some walking mixed in, for months now. I need to be inspired. (It's not that I don't know what to do to improve. Just been unwilling to do it.)
fA
Egg custard has protein. It's healthy. Healthy-ish, anyway. ;-)
fA
I forgot - Becca, when do you start? Hope it's a good omen for everyone else that's job hunting!
fA
I just spat water all over my phone at 'sucked off somewhere surreptitiously '. Sorry.
He actually can't stop laughing. He's gone a bit hysterical.
I think you might have broken him.
Sorry just... Can you imagine? I wouldn't complain if that's how part of May and June had gone!
And I meant to eat that egg custard tart. That was a treat. Cake put me over the treat threshold.
Wow, sucked off somewhere surreptitiously. That's fantastic.
I actually don't start till August - they have a summer intern in my position now - but they wanted to get the hiring over with and I'm happy to wait. Because JOB!
God, I wish I'd done that on purpose. :-) I usually use different slang for that act, so it never occurred to me. I'd have been so proud to send L. into hysterical laughter.
Sounds good Becca. Time off without the anxiety of job hunting! Without income as well, but I guess we can't ever have everything.
fA
Every time I nearly stop I just start again.
Home time. Baking. Dreaming ;)
Looks like you might not have gotten such a bad draw this year after all, Lestrade.
I was happy with my draw! Had potential, at least!
there's some glum faces on the spain bench.
And a happy SHerlock, consuming cake mix as fast as I make it, abetted by John.
Well cake mix is almost as tasty as the cake itself so I can't blame them. ;) What delights have you decided to wow the runners and riders with this time.
Have you been practising tying each other up... - for the 3-legged race, of course. ;)
Lestrade has to do the sack race and the one where you put clothes on and John is doing the obstacle course and Mrs N said it wouldn't be too hard and hurt his shoulder but there's a net and a jump and some tyres and a tube.
Can we make ice cream and put cake mix in it??
we can...probably put a sort of cake into ice cream. But not cake mix.
The obstacle course sounds like fun. I say optimistically. Don't remind me about this tomorrow when I'm bruised and covered in mud.
I think you're more likely to be pink and sweating! Unless they wet the course down... just remember, same rules for you as Sherlock, no cake before running about!
:(
Sherlock, see if you can get lestrade to try this, and let me know if it's as delicious as it looks:
http://lifehacker.com/make-a-giant-pancake-in-your-rice-cooker-1592047844
I have called and left a message with the person who interviewed me. Now I wait in general anxiety.
Ella
Well, you're old enough to make your own choices, so you get the same options Sherlock's does a. Eat afterwards. b. if you're sick you clean it up - and don't be sick on anyone else. And don't let the dogs eat it.
Me thinks someone is a spoilsport. ;) It's never a bad time for cake, and cake in ice cream sounds yummy too.
Those sound like great races, hope you have fun and don't end up too pink or brown. :) What races are you in, Sherlock?
Ella - afraid the only 'rice cooker' I have is a saucepan. I've never understood why you'd have another appliance for cooking rice.
Lestrade is putting potato in the cake.
I don't have a rice cooker since I'd be too discouraged if the rice didn't turn out any better than the rice I make in a saucepan. It seems entirely random as to whether it turns out sticky or fluffy, no matter how many iterations of cooking instructions I try.
So now I save rice for risotto and put everything else over noodles or quinoa, neither of which, I admit, are anything like rice.
Good luck in the games! I assume the obstacle course is designed to be relatively easy, the kids are short and the parents are probably, on average, not particularly fit. I doubt they want anyone to get hurt.
(Poor Spain.)
fA
Mmmm. I love baking made with potato/potato starch.
I'm sure you will too, Sherlock.
fA
No rice cooker--we only make brown rice, and the brand has more to do with how it comes out than anything else, I find!
Potato starch makes a good binder, Sherlock--all our Passover cakes are made with potato starch, and no flour!
Oh Spain! Out of the World Cup before the first round is over. Well played, Chile - stunning match.
It was mashed potato I want to try some but John says I have to go to bed.
Oh, interesting! My mother did that a few times in the past--bar cookies, actually--and they were very good. I'm sure you'll be able to try some tomorrow, Sherlock, and if it's all gone before you get to it, perhaps Lestrade would make another sometime for you to try.
Oh Ella, best of luck. I can't tell you how many times I have never heard from an employer again. Including one time when the employer seemed excited, told me I'd get a second interview, and never got back in touch to schedule it.
It's a lemon cake. hopefully not too potato-y. John did look at me like I'd gone a bit mad when I started mashing them into the mix...
So tomorrow got to decorate the chocolate cake, make sure this one is moist and make a summer fruits meringue-cake.
Then bounce about in a sack.
In A sack, not THE sack, I know where your minds are going ;)
fA - you making me laugh was exactly what I needed this afternoon. Was in a right grump about many things, one of which was a call for blood donors as there's a dip in donations during the footy, and obviously I can't give my - as far as I know - perfectly healthy blood.
That is absolutely ridiculous, isn't it. If they need blood then anyone generous enough to donate should be gratefully received. Some things are just so outdated and stupid.
The lemon and potato cake sounds interesting, I'd be happy to know the verdict from the tasters tomorrow. :)
I hope it won't really taste of potato... just lemon. It's gluten free.
The bar cookies my mom made with mashed potatoes didn't taste of potato (they were lemon too, with chocolate and meringue topping), so yours probably will be equally yummy. :)
In my experience, mashed potato in baked goods is mostly a texture thing. I've always felt it gives a smoother feel, something like when you adjust to get a finer crumb in bread. There's a recognizable taste but it's subtle. I don't know if you'd notice in a lemon cake.
Glad the laugh improved your day. God knows you and John improve mine with these blogs.
fA
Do you have a recipe? I have Celiac and I'm always looking for good GF recipes.
Can I give it to you tomorrow, if this turns out half-decent? If everyone survives, I'll write it up!
Cameroon are in deep do-do now...
Haha, of course!
Oh, oh, if you're doing that recipe, can you post the flourless chocolate cake recipe again as well? That was amazing, and I can't seem to find it on the blog.
Well no perfect scores yesterday and the surprise loss for Spain meant that only 3 people got points for that game so well guessed kholly, graham22 and John.
The scores stand as follows:

Good luck today everyone and good luck to the sports day competitors too. :)
Maybe we should have had a side competition to guess how far L gets in the sack before something untoward happens. Are you getting John to help you practise?
Are you suggesting he's had more experience, SH? Knows his way around? Has tips to pass on to me? ;)
Apparently it's 'too early' to dance around the kitchen singing with my husband. He just groaned and told me to get out of the way of the kettle.
I imagine it's his way of saying he'd prefer to be awake for it... (It's too early here for making tea even!)
Also too early to sing Meat loaf songs at him too, apparently.
Just perhaps more quietly
It's actually illegal to sing Meat Loaf quietly. Trust me, I'm a copper.
That whole illegal-to-sing-quietly thing? That's a prime reason Meat Loaf should mostly be restricted to professionals and karaoke nights.
Have fun at sports day! Make Sherlock proud - or is it more fail to make him disappointed?
With England's match later today, it's certainly going to be a day for sport!
fA
I had a roommate once who was also prone to singing and dancing and bouncing around the kitchen immediately after waking up. I actually didn't mind her activity level, it was when she wanted me to do things like talking immediately after waking up that made me confused. My speech centers don't wake up for ten minutes or so (or after I've had coffee, whichever first).
Ella
Just on our way to school, laden with cakes.
Problem with the singing is that my day naturally starts some hours before his, so my mid morning singalong is his wake up call ;)
All I hear now is David Attenborough. "What you see here is the Coppus Argentus, or, as it's colloquially known, the Lestrade. The Lestrade's most distinctive feature, apart from the silver fur, is its morning mating call. Harken to the majestic tones as he attempts to woo his mate, the quasi-nocturnal Medicus Periculous with a mid-morning call. Those of you with a keen ear may just be able to make out 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light.'"
Cake! Sacks! Running!
She also woke up earlier than me (though more on the order of half an hour), so yeah, there was that going on too. Stumbling out of your bedroom and into the sphere of a fully functioning person is a little overwhelming. :)
Ella
Ohohoh! Harley Davidson has made an electric motorcycle:
http://www.motorcyclenews.com/mcn/news/newsresults/new-bikes/2014/june/harley-goes-electric-with-livewire/
DW-- :D (That made me literally LOL...)
DW. Oh, DW. Marry me?
Well, that probably wouldn't work out for a variety of reasons, but I will mourn, hard and sincerely, the day the inevitable shifting tides of Internet preoccupations and personal lives take me out of your circles.
oh so sincerely, (so sincerely I'll do the 'formal' signature block,)
I am your ever-devoted,
fA
formerlyAnon
Less trade didn't even have shoes on because he was wearing flip flops and at least John won.
Even autocorrect doesn't love me!
Genius, DW. Your fault I didn't win because I was laughing!
I'm sure John's pleased that you're getting less trade - he's a one-man guy. ;)
Unlucky in the sack, but lucky in love, Greg. ;)
Well done, John, I'm glad someone did the family proud. How did you get on in your own races, Sherlock. Were the cakes gratefully received. How did the potato and lemon cake taste.
It was kind of Less Trade (still laughing) not to be too competitive about it, Sherlock. If John and he had both won everything, and he'd brought the delicious baked goods, AND everyone knows they are YOUR grownups - and have seen them picking you up on the bikes - well, don't you think the other parents would be a little intimidated?
It probably made some of the other parents feel better about themselves in comparison that Less Trade (oh thank-you Jesus & autocorrect!) didn't sweep his events!
fA
Also: congrats to John! Did he come through unhurt Sherlock? And which was your favorite cake?
fA
I was taught its in gentlemanly to come first in the sack.
I did come third, which is a result!
And John was wonderful and very gracious in victory.
John was good and we shouted for him really loudly and afterwards we all ate cake and I told everyone it had potato in it and I came first in one of my races and third in the other and now we're eating courgette bake and sitting on the sofa to eat it because of the football and John never usually lets us eat by the TV and there's ice cream and fruit for pudding.
That's brilliant, Sherlock, well done in your races and for cheering on John and Lestrade, I'm sure that helped John to win.
Did the cake taste like potato or just like lemon?
That's a nice treat to watch in front of the telly, let's hope England make it worth while. :)
That sounds like a very happy and satisfying day, all in all, Sherlock. Congratulations on your race results!
well....that was a very fine goal.
Unfortunately, yes. As long as they keep their heads up and keep trying then we can pull it back. Come on...
Glenn Hoddle has a very irritating voice, doesn't he?
At least he's not singing his comments. ;)
ouch. Poor guy!
I'm so jealous of Mycroft's score. I can't get past 1024.
Me neither, Afiendishthingy! And it's not even as if he has time to play it much.
YES!
and....no.
and oh dear.
Viva Italia?
You need to have a word with your boys, Greg, and make sure they win both their other games to give us a chance. ;) Oh well at least we kept fighting and we could still do it... maybe... :)
But don't we have to beat Costa Rica even then?
Yeah - Italy have to win against both Costa Rica and Uruguay. Italy really need to thrash Costa Rica to help our goal diff! And then we have to thrash Costa Rica too...
I think it's what they call a 'mathematical chance' ...ie....slim.
It could happen, L! I'm pulling for you (and not only because I have a financial stake ;-) )
SA x
Sounds like a marvelous day, except for the tiny detail of the match's outcome. Athletic prowess all around, good food and good company.
May watch a bit of Japan vs. Greece just so I can say I saw some of today's play.
A good evening and good sleep to you all. Sweet dreams of cheering your husband on to win his competition, Less, even if your team didn't do as well.
fA
The joy I got watching Danger wriggle under a net - arse in the air ;)
Although his real advantage came with the tunnel - he could just run through it, while the others had to crawl ;)
No, really, he was great, and a worthy winner. And Sherlock did exceptionally well too - he's becoming a far better winner! Because while it's bad being a bad loser, there's nothing as bad as a bad winner!!
Sherlock's growing up! And the love & effort you & John put into it is certainly part of it.
fA
5 perfect scores yesterday but I think the people who got them in the England match should probably have to do a forfeit or something. ;) The table is starting to spread out a little, but the scores are all still very close together so positions can change game by game which is fun as it means anyone could still easily win. :)
The table today is as follows:
Paula - 17
Lestrade, Z, Nameless - 16
Sherlock - 15
Joolz, anonybob - 14
MT88, REReader - 13

Good luck everyone - and Come On Italy. :)
At least we all have teams to cheer for, even if it's not our own ;)
Entire stove top pot of espresso down and no inspiration found. I even used the correct coffee, the expensive one.
I hope to find momentum in getting shit done. Wishing everyone a more inspired day!
fA
Take heart, fA, the weekend is almost upon us!
I'm so tired I could sleep standing up. For no reason either!
You're sure it's nothing to do with your performance in the sack yesterday?
It was quite a performance. He's always a winner in my book.
Ha, you talking about my sports day performance or...
;)
Sal reckons someone's sabotaged the coffee machine with decaff.
So, Danger, Murray to win... 6-2. Is that even a tennis score?? We should have a virtual tennis betting emporium, like we have the footy. Only with 100% worse performance from me.
Is that a hanging offense?
It is indeed a tennis score. We could do that. Not sure how to organise it. Would anyone be interested?
So. Fighting the continuing doldrums with The Talking Heads & The Clash, I discovered that listening to covers of The Clash by more current bands is an interesting rabbit hole down which to go. Not helping productivity, though. gahhhh
Today is clearly going to be waay longer than average. We're not yet anywhere near lunch, here.
I don't even know the names of any tennis players not in the top 20 seed, so you'd have lots of untutored company.
Today. GAaaahhhh.
fA
Putting decaff in the office coffee machine is not a hanging offense. Death is too lenient a penalty. Not near enough suffering.
I'd give a tennis . . . thing . . . a go. In full ignorance. But at least it's a sport I sort of know the rules for.
fA
I don't think it is decaff, I think that's psychological warfare on her part.
I know precisely 4 tennis players. And I think there might be a female one called Watson...but I might be thinking of the cricketer.
I'd be interested purely because then when you're watching I have some stake in the outcome.
Mycroft texted earlier. He wants a good cake recipe ... Which gets your vote?
Oh yes, that reminds me, how did the potato lemon one turn out?
I'd be happy to set up a form the same as the one for the footy if everyone wants to play. I'm not hugely up on current tennis players either so it would be majorly random guesses on my part too ;)
How would you want to score it. 1 point for who wins the match , 1 point for how many sets it goes to & maybe a point for each set guessed correct scores eg 6-0, 4-6 etc, something like that? What does anyone think?
I should, in theory, be so much better at the tennis pool, except the last time I regularly followed the players Sampras was playing. If you do it though, I'll be in.
Ha, Kholly, just what I was gonna say--only perhaps a little further back... ;)
That sounds good, Joolz! Very reasonable. Thank you for the offer :)
L - I still like the chocolate one the best.
I'll send him the choccy recipe then. And hope his companions enjoy it. And his tutor, too! Is it worth marks, Mycroft? If do, Skype me ;)
Joolz, my question is if a match only goes to three sets then scoring for five is redundant. And it would be a lot of details per match. I'll give it a go though if it's not too complicated.
I don't know enough about cricket to have a clue about how any of it is scored.
I know about footy though... And about how Italy are doing.
Err... I mean tennis. I know tennis isn't cricket!
Well.
Congratulations, Costa Rica.
Well that's a turn up for the books!!
Let's hope Italy manage a win in their final game or everyone will be out!!
I'd be up for a game with the tennis if someone wants to run one, let's be honest our football game is becoming the only good thing about the World Cup ;-)
Our little game is definitely brightening up the competition, yes!
Right, leaving an office full of coppers in tears and heading home. Danger, did you get salad from the allotment today or shall I get some?
We've got some. A surprising amount, actually.
If people are interested in doing a tennis competition, there's a premade thing at tennis channel's website. It's called the racquet bracket and it's already got the draw in it. There's two days to enter (the tournament starts monday) but I think it would be a simple way to do this, considering the size of the tournament. You can do private pools with it, which I would be happy to set up.
Of course, you can't change your choices as the tournament evolves, so the downside is that we can't start over at say, the quarterfinals, when we have a better idea of how things will shake out, the way we can with the world cup at the knockout round. Thoughts?
Danger - good, as I'm here now. Almost. Traffic terrible as a bus is on fire out West, on the outbound side, too.
All you lot who know anything about tennis will have to decide the best way to do the comp. I really don't know the first thing about it.
Becca - might be wise, yeah, considering how many players there are, especially to start out with. Anyone else have thoughts on it?
It seems it might be kinder to our volunteer(s) to use the premade bracket. If everyone really wanted to start over going into the quarterfinals or even round of 16 (is that called 4th round at Wimbledon?), it would be a lot less work to set up our own bracket at that stage.
fA
Can you make banoffee pie? I want to have some.
The round of 16 and the fourth round are used interchangeably at all Grand Slams, including Wimbledon.
I could at the weekend, not right now, Sherlock.
Or we could to welcome Mycroft home, next weekend?
France are playing a blinder against Switzerland. Terrible for my scores though!
Thanks Becca for the bit of education in terminology!
fA
:)
I first saw tennis when I was a kid at a gathering of my parent's friends, no kids available. So I made a game with myself, could I figure out the rules just by watching, never looking them up. 19 years later, I know most of them, but somewhere along the way I fell in love with it and never looked back.
<-- fountain of random tennis knowledge
no we should definitely try it to see if it's nice before Mycroft is home and then if it is make it for him too.
Christ, Switzerland may as well just go home!
RR: That's just when I stopped, not when I started. My first tennis crush was Stefan Edburg.
Sadly even when we start the day with the list of how we all scored the football I forget who I'm supposed to be rooting for by the time people here start sneaking peeks at their phones to catch up on the scores.
KHolly...well, I can't remember exactly how I 'voted' without scrolling up and checking... but I am sure my 0-0 prediction for this current game couldn't have been much more wrong - France are giving Switzerland a 5-0 thumping right now!
...although the Swiss are making a comeback!
I know I shouldn't be shallow, but um, just look at the France coach. I mean. Just look...
Also, good on the Swiss for not giving up.
Maf has given up on the footy. She just casually reached out and shoved the buttons off the arm of the sofa onto the floor, as if it had personally offended her.
Nameless, exactly WHY do you think I started watching football/soccer in high school? The school football/soccer team players were sooo much more to my tastes than (American) football players were. All that running . . . .

If there's a form already made up for the tennis then it seems sensible to use that, if Becca is happy to set it up. We could either follow it all the way through or, as fA suggests, we could always re-do the final stages later in our own way when we know who has gone through, whatever people prefer. (I'm happy to do a form at any stage if it's needed or just to play along if we're going to do it that way.) :)
Would it be just the singles or are we going to do the doubles and mixed doubles too.
We have to ask at this stage though is there going to be be some kind of Federicorn penalty imposed. ;)
I can't possibly comment on players or others at the World Cup who I might watch for pleasure ;)
I think it would just be the singles, at least for the tennis channel form - they just do the singles draws I believe. But the doubles do have smaller draws, so perhaps Joolz could make up a form for that if we all wanted to do them.
this is off the topic of sport, but I don't know how else to tell RSF that my garland team is going to the South End Garden Tour today to dance and enjoy the gardens... in case she's in that neighborhood. Honoring my mom's contribution to life in the city!
