10 December 2013

I fell in love at the seaside.

Soo...I did say I might put a picture of John up. But I don't have loads, really. I mean, I don't take a lot of pictures of John, or of anyone, really. I usually take pictures of things. And I refuse to put up the one of him looking gorgeous in bed the other morning, gazing out of the window. It's not risqué or anything, but it's...well, not for sharing.

So, yes, had a lovely night away. The staff were lovely, the food was brilliant, the spa was amazing (and empty, most of the time! Why wasn't everyone in there??)

There was a hot tub outside. We walked serenely out to it. We ran back, steaming, before important parts of us crawled back from whence they came...

We went for a walk on Sunday morning, out to the coast.

I loved these groynes. Really green, knobbly. Beautiful.

We didn't stay on the beach for long - too bloody cold!

Sherlock needs a costume for his play. I think it's perfect he's a storm cloud. Very fitting ;)

He's grumpy about being at school still, but he's got not choice. He does enjoy it, when he's there. He's just tormented that somewhere else in the world, there might be fun happening. John has his work cut out, pre and post school. Although tomorrow is art club, so hopefully that'll use up some of his creativity.

Work was busy, but unremarkable. Had some more great results recently.

The other day the MPS helicopter took this picture. Anyone want to guess where it is?

Mum has moved into her new home. She is... well, she went. We'll see how she gets on. Nicky is sorting out her house at the moment.

Good luck to your mum, I hope she finds friends where she's moved to and can see the positives of the move :-)

Your trip away sounds like it was really great, I'm glad you had time to take a bit of a break together before the madness of Christmas gets into full swing ;-)

Mycroft's school?

John H. D. Watson said...

Beautiful picture of the beach. And it looks appropriately cold.

I hope your mum's not too unhappy.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll have to get down to see her soon. Hard to tell, really. I hope she doesn't hate it, anyway.

Anon - I will reveal the answer....well, when people have had a chance to guess. At some point ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Hmm.... Not sure I'm going to reveal my result in this until a few others of you do!

A 'Psychopath Test', part of a study/night of examining psychopaths/portrayals of them in media.

Sounds like a lovely holiday :-)

That photo looks a bit like Hogwarts, and given the sports facilities seem to include golf and rugby but not football, I'm going to go along with Anon's giess.

And I got 30% on the psychopath score - but if I were a psychopath, I'd manipulate it to say that, wouldn't I?

REReader said...

I hope your mother finds some congenial people there, L.

Ummmmm....I'd've guessed the outer court at Wimbledon, but not with that track there--and those don't look like tennis courts in the center of the track. If not Harrow (good thought, Anon!), how about Eton?

I got 21% on that test--I think that's pretty low, yeah?

John H. D. Watson said...

I am 33%, apparently. Maybe it was the question about fast cars and skydiving...

Small Hobbit said...

I got 33%. Does it say anything that I then cheated to find the picture?

Greg Lestrade said...

Jeez. I might not share because John will stop letting me in the same bed!

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha! Now I have to know...

Greg Lestrade said...

...73%

John H. D. Watson said...

Well, I suppose that shows how much internet tests are worth.

Greg Lestrade said...

I have met more psychopaths than your average person. I don't feel as if we had a lot in common. But maybe you need to be a little bit that way inclined to catch them?

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't think you're remotely that way inclined. I think they're putting too much weight on the questions about being spontaneous, if I had to guess. You're one of the kindest people I know.

Greg Lestrade said...

I won't turn my warrant card in just yet then ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

You also still have to sleep in the same bed with me :)

REReader said...

The test seems to conflate risk-taking with psychopathic--but while psychopaths may be risk-takers, risk-takers are by no means all psychopaths, if I remember my psychology courses correctly..

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - I shall do my best. If I wake up wearing a Hannibal Lecter mask I shall know I was sleep-psychopathing.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll make you the mask for my next topiary project. Out of thyme.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmm. Aromatic.

Although thyme probably goes rather nicely with liver and Chianti... watch out ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

And fava beans, come to that.

Greg Lestrade said...

You might just have to hope that the test was wrong. Instead of seasoning yourself ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

You'd never destroy my creepy topiary mask just for a decent meal.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hopefully you'll never find out!

Bed? Promise I won't nibble your ears ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Bed, yes.

Greg Lestrade said...

so foggy at the moment I won't be able to find you anyway! Proper winter weather.

Kestrel337 said...

Those questions seemed pretty ridiculous to me. I got 24% and I bet it was only that high because I honestly really like roller coasters and can keep my head in a crisis.

Joolz said...

Good morning. Hope you have woken mask free, Greg, and you survived your night in one piece, John - I won't ask which piece either. ;)

I got 21% on the test, I have to admit I'm not much of a daredevil - in fact, big chicken would probably be a better description. ;)

Have a great day everyone.

Greg Lestrade said...

So foggy this morning can't see across the street!

rsf said...

I got a 24, but I suspect that's because there wasn't much there I'd agree with wholeheartedly. I kept wanting to waffle!

At least your fog isn't full of coal smoke anymore. Are you old enough to have seen a brown or yellow fog in London?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, clean air act was 1954! Before my time :)

But it's pretty much burnt off now.

REReader said...

I like fog, so long as I don't have cot drive anywhere, because I like the idea that I'm essentially walking around in a cloud. (But a little of it goes a long way. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

Its all burnt off now.
Beautiful day, sun shining, not too cold.

Interesting article on our sentencing guidelines for murder on the bbc, which my phone won't let me copy and paste. Anyway, in the Magazine section. I'll link later, unless one of you does.

Lancs. Anon

REReader said...

Thanks, Lancs, I couldn't find it on my iPod.

It seems that the sentences ultimately have as much to do with the judges as the crimes/criminals, really--just as it does here.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks Lancs.! Sorry, been run off my feet.

Danger, boys, on the way home now. Shout if you need anything.

Sherlock said...

Mycroft and Lestrade are making lasagne properly and it smells nice and I can't wait.

pandabob said...

That sounds yummy Sherlock, I hope you don't have to wait too long :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

he is loitering around as if he hasn't been fed for a week, and prodding holes through the pasta.

pandabob said...

I'm not sure lasagne works very well with pasta with holes in!

I'm sure it'll be worth the wait Sherlock :-)

Sherlock said...

I was just seeing how stretchy it was. Now it's in the oven and I want to eat it.

REReader said...

And how stretchy was it? (I've never made fresh pasta.) It sounds delicious!

Sherlock said...

It was quite stretchy but then my finger went through it. Lestrade said it could have been stretchier if he'd taken longer making it.

Kestrel337 said...

Wow! Real lasagna with home-made pasta and everything. Makes me think of my Italian grandmother. We only made it the once but boy was it delish. Miss you, gran!

REReader said...

An effective, if not precise, method of testing stretchiness, that! Thank you, Sherlock. (I'd guess the stretchiness has to do with how long you work the dough/gluten, but I admit to being vague on that.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Getting Sherlock to bed is becoming increasingly difficult as Christmas gets closer. And he's now staging some sort of mutiny about tree-buying. He thinks all the good ones will be gone if we don't go tomorrow.

pandabob said...

Well if he doesn't go to bed on time then Christmas will never quite arrive for him will it?

Did John and Mycroft offer to solve the tree problem by going tomorrow to get one while he's at school? you could meet up with them at lunchtime to help carry and then Sherlock doesn't have to worry about it ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I just told him if he was going to get angry about it there'd be no tree at all.

rsf said...

Oooh, that's a tricky requirement. It's hard not to feel an emotion. My mom always said that being angry was okay, but taking your anger out on other people was not. So you could feel angry or sad, but you would go bite your pillow, or take some quiet time alone, instead of being rude or disrespectful.

pandabob said...

That's reasonable cause and effect I'd say Greg :-) did he go off to school ok this morning?

I hope work is as good as it can be for you :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

The way his logical mind works it wasn't difficult to get him to see that being angry with the only people who could remedy the situation was counter productive. He settled on glaring at me instead.

pandabob said...

Did you have a good day at school Sherlock? I know you've probably said before but when is your Christmas play? I hope rehearsals are going well :-)

Have you had a nice day Mycroft? I hope you're making the most of your holidays :-)

REReader said...

My, it's quiet here! Is everyone having a good day? :)

Joolz said...

Hi guys, how has the day been for everyone. Have you been practising ready for your play, Sherlock. Did you have a suitably boring, fully catalogued day, John and Mycroft. Hope work wasn't too bad for you, Greg, nearly done.

Since the anger was toned down to mere glaring this morning, will there be tree purchasing happening today or are you going to wait 'til the weekend whilst you're busy with storm manufacture. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm not sure when tree purchasing will happen.

Storm is required for tomorrow. John and Mycroft made an amazing cloud shape out of a huge grey jumper from a charity shop, all stuffed out with padding to make it more cumulo nimbus or whatever you call it. I am doing lightning tonight.

John H. D. Watson said...

If making last minute amateur theatre costumes were a marketable skill, all four of us could have new careers.

Greg Lestrade said...

If his face is still as grumpy tomorrow as it was last night, he'll be the perfect little storm cloud.

Almost heading home. ANything reuiqred - other than a lightning bolt?

John H. D. Watson said...

Mycroft says if you can get salmon, he'll make dinner while you make lightning.

Greg Lestrade said...

No probs. You had a good day?

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, pretty good. Sherlock's still a gloomy little thundercloud when he remembers to be, but you can tell he's excited about the play. And Mycroft and I went to the Tate Modern and saw some things that Sherlock wouldn't be interested in at all ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad you two got out together for some nice boredom.

Salmon steaks?

Mycroft said...

Yes, please.

Greg Lestrade said...

no problem. Thanks for cooking.

Mycroft said...

I enjoy it. And it will be entertaining to watch the progress of Sherlock's costume from a safe distance.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hmm.

Want to cook for Nicky and everyone at the weekend?

Mycroft said...

Will you help?

Greg Lestrade said...

Of course, if you want me to.

Mycroft said...

Yes, thank you. That's a lot more people than usual. I'll think of a menu while you carry on with the lightning and the swearing.

Greg Lestrade said...

Wasn't that much swearing! I only got the eyebrow from John once.

REReader said...

But do you have a pleased storm cloud? :) (I'm sure my school-play costumes were never anything like as cool!)

Greg Lestrade said...

He's not quite a ray of sunshine yet. But the forecast is better.

John H. D. Watson said...

It was probably an appropriate amount of swearing, considering.

REReader said...

He's not quite a ray of sunshine yet. But the forecast is better.

Must be method acting. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

No one tell me who won Masterchef. I'm watching it late!

Greg Lestrade said...

....well. I wasn't expecting that result! Stunning cooking though.

Kira said...

I got 24% - my psych prof told us that the classic psychopath was James Bond... does that feel better L??

Unknown said...

I thought Mycroft was the master chef tonight? ;)

Joolz said...

Have fun today, Sherlock, I'm sure you'll be brilliant and you'll look amazing in the costume lovingly made for you by all your family.

Hope everyone enjoys it. :)

tresta said...

THanks for the Psychopath test L- it was interesting. I actually scored only a 6%! And that based on the question about having a cool head in stressful times. For me reasonably cool head, not on Mycroft's level probably. Or yours.

I agree with something John said above; the way the questions were worded I imagine your score came from being spontaneous, and being good at dangerous work etc.
