It's not so hard to do, And it'll carry you through

Well. Feels like a lot has happened this week.

In completely the wrong order - Mycroft got wonderful reports from all his teachers. They're almost as proud of him as we are, it would seem. I know he'll be very modest, but he is just an all-round wonderful young man. I hope he'll manage to find quite a lot of time to relax this half term - I know he's got work to do, but we're definitely going to try and all get out places together, too.

Anyway, we'll be back to fetch him for the holiday tomorrow. I guess they put this evening right by when a lot of travelling parents will be down to pick up their boys anyway.

So that's all good. And although Mycroft said he didn't do as well as he wanted in his mocks...I'm sure it won't surprise any of you to know he did extremely well. He just holds himself to incredibly high standards.

And.... well, yes, Bryan. I don't know if it's a long story, or I've just over thought it, or what... Basically, he got the custody sergeant to call me when he was arrested. And... I still don't know what he thought. But he was obviously worried. I just went to the stock phrases. First offence, nothing I could do anyway. I didn't know what to do, I mean...who would have expected that? So then he got angry, said I was ruining him, because he was about to make it big in America, and this would ...mess that up. So I just said the only person who'd messed up was him, and told the custody sarge not to call me again. (The calls are done on speakerphone, so the sarge's can hear both sides of the conversation.)

And...well, I was worried, I'll be honest. I thought he could do something vindictive once he was out.

Then today he called my office. Told me I had to help him. Tried some of the old tricks that used to work - the blackmail, the threats, picking at my insecurities. Except that so many of those insecurities he used to rely on don't exist any more - not like they used to, anyway.

So then I just got angry. And I thought, you know, actually, he's bloody called me, so he can listen to me for once - for as long as it took him to realise he could hang up, anyway. And that actually took quite a long time. Shock, I guess. So I told him a few home truths that have been stewing away inside me. Which I won't go into, because... well, because I don't want to be like that. But yeah, it felt good, knowing that he knew what I thought of him, and he knew I wasn't afraid to say it. And he knew I was proud and happy with my family, and what they thought of him.

So, apart from scaring some of my officers with the ferocity, volume and amount of swearing going on, it was a good thing to happen, really.

I very much doubt he'll go to prison or anything, but he'll at least be given something to think about.

It's good for them. ;)

I'm glad you got a chance to get that all out.

I am so glad that you felt the opportunity was right to do something positive with regard to Bryan and that his hope to cause you trouble has actually had the opposite effect, be good to yourself from here though while your brain catches up with itself :-)

I hope you all get to spend some fun time together over the holiday, February half term is one of my favourite holidays not that I know why!

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - it will take a while for my brain to catch up. And I'd be lying if it didn't occasionally still ambush me with the thought that I've done something really stupid...

Danger - I've got to keep my reputation as the most chilled out DI in the Met!

pandabob said...

The brain is a wonderful thing but at times it can be a person's biggest enemy. luckily for you though you have lots of people around to talk to, or not talk to if that's what you want, and therefore, although it might take time, you'll get there :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, it'll take a while of both talking and thinking, I think.

Hope you and yours have a great holiday. I think we've got a few things planned. And Sherlock has two ponds now - one at school, and our allotment, where we shall begin experimenting with hydroponics...

Anonymous said...

So pleased, but not surprised, that Mycroft's doing well. He deserves, as you say, time to enjoy some recreation and his family. I do hope you all have good holidays. And that the weather does not interfere - the flooding is starting to get play on our news in the States, which means that things are getting dire (or that the effects are easily noticeable to the London-based news reporters.)

I hope this latest intersection of Bryan with your life is at an end, am very happy you had the chance to lay it out for him. May the mental & emotional processing require only minor emotional energy.

(That three quarters of a million page views is fast approaching!)

Glad to hear you got some things off your chest. And slightly jealous. :)

Well done to Mycroft, too. I feel reasonably certain that your hard work will pay off in the end. I hope you're able to have a relaxing half term.

And spell casters? Who can say no to spell casters?

Ella

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't need a spell caster.

Having John in my life gives me reason to get up every morning (and even better reason to stay in bed on some), he means I can sleep easy at night. He brings sunshine into my life on the gloomiest of days. He balances me, he cares for me, and he is always by my side, emotionally and literally. I am the luckiest man alive to have him as my husband. And I can only hope I'm half as good for him as he is for me. So happy Valentine's, John Watson. Thank you for everything you've done for me. I love you.

John H. D. Watson said...

Happy valentines day, love. There are days I still can't believe I'm lucky enough to have you. Thank you for being part of my life. You make everything about it better, every day.

Greg Lestrade said...

Fancy drowning yourself in garlic with me tonight? Mycroft says he'll put off his hot date and look after Sherlock.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can think of nothing I would rather do, or at least nothing I'd rather do in public. I got the flowers, by the way. Beautiful. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Good, glad you liked them - although I'd worry if you didn't!! Hope they brighten up this miserable wet day.

John H. D. Watson said...

(They're the flowers we had for our wedding, in case anyone's wondering. :) )

REReader said...

Aw, lovely and super romantic! Happy Valentine's Day to you all!

Sherlock said...

I made a card and you have to help me deliver it

John H. D. Watson said...

Do I? And to whom do you want to deliver it?

Greg Lestrade said...

I must need new glasses, Sherlock. I can't see the please that you must've put in that sentence...

Sherlock said...

Please.

I can't tell you on here or it won't be a secret Valentine just say you'll help

Anonymous said...

Y'all are so sweet. (Special kudos to Mycroft.)

Happy Valentine's Day everybody! If you don't have a sweetie, love on somebody in a more platonic way. Treat yourself, everybody deserves that.

(And if you just can't stand Valentine's Day, look up all the heartbreak songs you can and enjoy a good wallow. Write a poem of venom and bitterness. Wear black and write your own obituary, emphasizing how you died alone, triumphantly or tragically as you prefer. But then do something nice but unromantic for somebody, anonymously if you don't actually like them that much.)

I'm an equal opportunity encourager. ;-)

formerlyAnon

John H. D. Watson said...

I'll help within reason. We're not going to another country to deliver it or buying him or her an elephant or anything like that.

REReader said...

Ha, fA!

Secret Valentine's are so fun, Sherlock, I hope you successfully surprise the lucky recipient!

(ETA: I'm enjoying the holiday captchas!)

Anonymous said...

Yes, RR, the themed captchas were a nice surprise!

Hope the Secret Valentine Delivery Project is successful and a fun adventure.

After work I'm making blackberry oatmeal and chocolate chip banana bread muffins, though most of the recipients won't realize they're valentines as they'll get them tomorrow and no pink, red or heart decorations are involved. I hope to give away more than I eat, but no promises.

Sherlock said...

We might need Lestrade's help because we might and anyway you'll want to do kissing because of today and because you haven't seen him since this morning so we should go

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, I'm not far off finishing ready to collect Mycroft and then take John off for dinner, so you're most welcome to buy me coffee in return for enrolling me into your plan...

John H. D. Watson said...

Well, if there's going to be coffee and kissing, I suppose we'd better go.

Greg Lestrade said...

That sums up all I have to offer the relationship really :)

John H. D. Watson said...

And kindness and understanding, love and support, shoulder rubs at all hours of the day and night...

Sherlock said...

And murders!

Joolz said...

I just love you guys - your frip & frivolity and obvious devotion to each other is an inspiration to all. :)

Secret plans for sending a valentine sound like a lovely idea, Sherlock, I hope you enjoy all the intrigue - will disguises be involved. ;)

Well done for sacrificing your evening plans, Mycroft, you're a star. Enjoy your half term.

Have a great evening everyone.

REReader said...

Murders above cakes and pancakes, Sherlock? ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock has delivered his message. We just about rescued the recipient from the glitter tsunami that emerged from the envelope.

REReader said...

You're intrepid rescuers!

(May we know who was the lucky card-getter? Or does it need to stay a secret?)

Molly said...

It was me!

It was lovely Sherlock, so kind of you. I'm very sorry I couldn't give you a real heart, after you asked so nicely, but you have certainly won my heart.

REReader said...

:)

Lovely, Sherlock, especially since Molly was so nice with the class presentation and all!

Greg Lestrade said...

And now we have Mycroft home - the holiday starts here!

Although I'm slightly worried we will actually be blown away when we get to Brighton... it's pretty rough out there.

For those of you not watching it on the news every day, here's a small gallery of pictures of the flooding some people are going through

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-26186477

And remember, some of those people have been flooded out since Christmas. They say it may remain flooded for weeks or months... unthinkable, really, if that's your home, flooded with sewage and slurry-filled water.

Anonymous said...

Lucky you, Molly! Oddly, despite being single, I think this has been one of my favourite Valentine's Days so far. I seem to have a lot of single friends this year and there has been much biscuit/cake giving and Facebook messaging, which, topped off with your blogs (where from the outside at least it feels like even your recent ups & downs have only strengthened your ties), has all been quite heart-warming. I hope you all enjoy your evenings...

On a different note, is it this weekend you're coming down to Brighton? If you haven't heard I just wanted to warn you that it's the half marathon on Sunday so watch out for road closures - they always seem to catch me out. It's been a bit hailstone-y of late but Sunday's supposed to be sunny (if I haven't just jinxed it) so I hope you have a great time.

- Hove Actually anon.

P.S. I can't wait for your 3/4 million pageview milestone Lestrade - I'm going to celebrate by buying 4 millionaire shortbreads and eating 3 of them. (And then probably the 4th one too, so as not to be wasteful. :) )

Greg Lestrade said...

Hey Hove Actually Anon, it is this weekend! Thanks for the info on the half-marathon, I had no idea. Hope the weather does give the runners a break.

Hove's lovely. Used to know a guy who lived on Second Avenue. I would definitely live Hove-way, rather than Brighton.

Good idea on the shortbreads - maybe I should make some in celebration? But right now, John and I are going to brave the howling gale to eat pizza!

Sherlock said...

MYCROFT has a Valentine's card and I saw it and he wouldn't show me but he went BRIGHT RED and now he's hidden it and he says I can't go to Brighton if I look in his room and why would anyone even give him a card???

REReader said...

Well, that's Mycroft's business, really, isn't it? And his choice whether or not he wants to share.

Did you make anyone besides Molly a Valentine card?

Greg Lestrade said...

DOn't tease your brother, Sherlock. He's doing you a favour, saying he'll look after you while we're out. If you're bad I'll make John breathe his garlic breath on you.

Small Hobbit said...

I fail to see how anyone wouldn't find the Tragopan Satyra irresistible.

Anonymous said...

Ok, Mycroft goes up from kudos to Special Hazard Duty Commendation.

It's hard not knowing, Sherlock, but everybody is entitled to some privacy. Even (especially) family. Check with John or Greg for where the boundaries are - but those boundaries are not negotiable.

I feel the female Tragopan Satyra is made of stern stuff if that mating display is more enticing than intimidating. Guess birds, like people, love who they love. (Yes. I know I'm anthropomorphizing and the more scientifically minded find this annoying. Sorry.)

Mycroft said...

I have told Sherlock he can stay up a little later, until you are home, providing that is no later then 2230.

Please be careful walking home though, apparently they are now diverting planes from Heathrow because the wind is so strong. Beware of flying debris. Or, when you approach the flat, flying Sherlocks.

Greg Lestrade said...

We are on the way. We may arrive soaked, and flying sideways, riding a wheelie bin... but we will get there!

Kestrel337 said...

Mycroft, you are a STAR.

I hope the weather settles down soon. I can't imagine having to be out of my house for that long under even less horrific circumstances, but having it flooded...that's heartbreaking!

Greg Lestrade said...

It's rough out there. And we're nowhere near getting the worst of it. Just seen someone has died on a cruise ship in the Channel the sea's so bad. Just...well, thoughts to anyone out there suffering.

Now, we have a small tired boy to put to bed. And we'll have to see if we can get anywhere tomorrow. Might be too many trees down.

Unknown said...

happy Valentine's day everyone, fA especially has put a smile on my face. And Sherlock giving a glittery card to Molly, sweet!
My daughter dropped by with cookies for me :)
The flooding is truly horrific, yikes, it's even hard to look at pictures, never mind imagine being caught up in it. :( my heart goes out to all who are affected. Makes me feel like I got off easy with a foot of snow.
Glad you lads had a nice date, and got home safe.
S

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks. I can't believe Sherlock can sleep with this weather battering the house.

Wouldn't actually be surprised if either John or I get some sort of call out, days off or not, with this weather going on.

Anonymous said...

Thank goodness there was no trouble getting Mycroft home. (Though I imagine the bikes can navigate where even a 4-wheel drive vehicle cannot.) Having him there will sweeten any disappointments with plans that have to be changed or abandoned.

Greg Lestrade said...

We'll be on our way to Brighton then. Hopefully! It seems okay, just delays.

Sherlock said...

The stupid train has stopped and we're nearly there and it's stopped! Come on train! They said the signals are broken

Greg Lestrade said...

Aaah, Brighton. Coffee. All of us together. What could be better?

Joolz said...

Is the sea front down there still being battered or has it eased off a bit - should make for some brilliant photos if so whilst you're there. (Not that I'm in any way lessening the trauma of living there and being confronted by it all - we have floods and have lost part of the lean-to roof too - and it is awful for everyone who is suffering).

So is this your camel milk coffee or are you building yourselves up to that.

Have a wonderful holiday all of you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not camel milk...yet ;)

It is very windy! Have to hang on to Sherlock or he'd fly away!

The dogs' ears are getting blown about in a hilarious way. They keep trying to eat seaweed...can't think that would end well?

John is using me as a windbreak.

John H. D. Watson said...

He keeps threatening to put me in his pocket...

Greg Lestrade said...

My very own pocket Doc :) a docket? Anyway, lunch soon! Will swap coffee for wine ;) and windy rain for warm dry and food!

Sherlock said...

I had nice cheese and crispy stuff and seaweed and chocolate but yucky tomatoes and cream but it was mainly good.

Anon Without A Name said...

Well, you can't beat a nice bit of cheese and crispy stuff :-)

Are you all having a good afternoon? How's the weather holding up?

Anonymous said...

Enjoy! At least walking around in the wind should wear everyone out & make for good appetites and good sleep. I seem to remember lunch was supposed to be at an interesting restaurant (or interesting food or . . . something), how did seaweed factor in?

fA

Greg Lestrade said...

The weather is improving.

Windy still, but we've dried out.

And we've shared the spoils of bits of Sherlock's food he rejected - but he got us back by eating bits of ours he wanted ;)

I could do with a nap now!

Anonymous said...

Oh hey, we've passed the 750k mark! *releases balloons and confetti*

Sherlock said...

I had seaweed with mine and it was good it was chopped up with something like mayonnaise and all of my lunch was good except for the bits I didn't like and it was really really windy on the beach and the dogs barked at the waves lots and our hotel is nice and me and Mycroft have our own room with the dogs next door to John and Lestrade and there's cushions for the dogs too

Unknown said...

wow, I love going down by the beach in the "off season" like this. Not sure I would have braved it in THIS weather, but it sounds like you all had a fine time. I'm not surprised the train was delayed, I have a friend over there somewhere doing some visiting, and his travel plans have been changed several times due to the weather. I think he's glad he didn't book a lot of tickets ahead of time, since he's had to be very nimble.
S

Greg Lestrade said...

We have taken the dogs out for a stroll. And seem to have ended up in a pub... Mycroft texted us to tell us not to bring the dogs back drunk ;)

I think we look good, two gay guys, accessorising with matching hounds, out on the town on a Saturday night ;)

We are lifting a glass to all of you who've contributed to those 750000 page hits things!

ro said...

Ah, that's one of the things I love about England - the way they embrace dogs! You can't really take dogs into any businesses here. It's a year now since I first visited Brighton! We arrived the day of the half marathon. It was actually warmer then than when I went back in November. I've seen the pics of the shingle that relocated itself, burying the public bench seating! Crazy weather. We've just experienced our first rainy morning in a long time. It was lovely, but the sun's coming out now. I wish we could spread the weather out a bit more evenly, so you guys got some sun and the rain could go where it could do some good!

Enjoy your holidays, guys!

Anonymous said...

Mycroft is a gem, isn't he!

"two bright, engaging, attractive gay guys, accessorising with matching hounds"

There. Fixed your sentence.

Sounds like a wonderful weekend!

Safe weather and travel to all-- we got more snow today, on top of the 10 inches on Thursday and the 6 inches or so the week before that. I cannot believe that we'll be able to plant peas in another 4-5 weeks, but it's true. Doesn't mean it won't snow on them after planting, but we can!

Sherlock said...

It's nice and sunny and so we're going to try and find the tracks on the rocks for the railway and John said if we don't have time to find camel coffee he'll take Lestrade to buy one in London and this morning one of the dogs sneezed so loudly it made the other one jump and bark.

REReader said...

All in all, it sounds like you all are having a wonderful weekend!

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmm. Sadly home again soon. But we've got some other things planned! And I've got quite a few days off, or only on call, which is good :)

rsf said...

I hope you get some decent weather while you've got Mycroft with you. It looks like our pattern might break up by the end of the week,so maybe yours will too.

Did you find any of the railway tracks? Or are they all gone, with just the holes from the spikes left in the rock?
