13 June 2014

Then I awake and look around me, at the four grey walls that surround me

Well...football. Silly old game, eh?

I love the recent quote on the pitch England have their first match on (much has been made recently of the fact it doesn't look very good) "It's looking a lot better today, a lot greener...that's because they've painted it." Ah well, as long as it LOOKS okay, what else matters?

Oh, crap...torn now. Want the Dutch to do well, as they're mine in the sweeps! But I wanted it to end 1-1 for our little competition. (okay, with this scoreline, I'm quite enjoying it again!!) And I LOVE the spray for free kicks. We should definitely get that over here.

Today has been a tedious one where I decided I had to clear my paperwork piles of 'non urgent' things, because it couldn't really get any bigger without being a health hazard.

My signature is on a par with a doctor's - just a squiggle, doesn't even resemble anything any more. So I've been squiggling, adding notes, and staring out of the window waiting for home time.

And now I have what feels like the start of a migraine.... will it stop me drinking this nice mojito? Probably not...

For those of you struggling, the last lyrics which formed the post title were Oasis, and some of the video for the song were filmed at Southend, where we were. :)

And here is the sort of video Maf obviously watches when we're out... she's rapidly able to jump onto taller and taller things...so she can already reach John's head with ease ;)

Jesus.... 5-1. After all we said about not going higher than 3 !

Anon Without A Name said...

Nice goal, too /understatement

Greg Lestrade said...

If I was Spain I'd just get all the players to stack up in the goalmouth... that was a stunning strike - couldn't even say the goalie saved it, he just happened to get hit by it!

Anon Without A Name said...

Bloody hell, I thought they were going to make it six then, for a moment...

Greg Lestrade said...

Should have been at least 7!

Nicky said...

Orio, remember when I used to spend so much time helping you with your homework that in the end you'd get a better mark than me? I hope you know what that feels like, now Sherlock's beating you in the football!!

I hope you get to spend some time with your boys this weekend.

I feel like that video is my future...

REReader said...

That cat looks very pleased with itself... :D

Greg Lestrade said...

The cat part is your future.

I sort of hope you don't turn into a woman... but, you know, I'd still love you. Just need a new map...

John H. D. Watson said...

That's very sweet. Think I'd prefer to keep my current anatomy though, all things considered.

Greg Lestrade said...

Excellent. I'm inordinately fond of your anatomy too. Certain bits are rather...irreplaceable.

But I do understand if you start to wear a feline toupe.

John H. D. Watson said...

I don't think that cat would be able to do it without the towel.

Greg Lestrade said...

...I think Maf may take that as a challenge!

I'll stick to the goos getting in my hair, I think.

Anon Without A Name said...

I completely misread that as "I'll stick to getting goo in my hair". I was going to commend the pair of you on your athleticism...

Joolz said...

That's all I can picture now too, Nameless. ;)

Well 3 more perfect scores today so that's great going, Desert Wanderer in the Chile match and Sherlock and REReader in the Mexico game and they were also the only people to score in the Holland game so they both did very well. Scores are as follows:

Good luck. :)

I got about half way through reading all those scores in my head before I realized I shouldn't be thinking "one-love" but rather "one-nil." Sigh. Football's not really my game. I will say, having someone to root for, even if they were randomly chosen, makes the whole thing more fun.

Joolz said...

I'm glad you're enjoying playing, kholly, even if you're not into footy. Maybe if this works & everyone enjoys it we could do it for a tennis competition next (maybe a bit confusing to do it for Wimbledon now - or do you think we could do it??)

Try writing out a sheet for every competitor & reading out loud quickly through each score to check you've copied them correctly and the word 'nil' loses all meaning I can assure you ;)

Sherlock said...

Yes I like this game!

Small Hobbit said...

I look at some of my predictions now and wonder what an earth I was thinking of. And these are the early games, I dread to think what I chose for the later ones.

Nameless, or anyone else over here, did you get the storm last night? I was driving home listening to the person on the radio burbling on about champagne moons, contending with sheet lightening, thunder and so much rain on the road that there was a risk of aqua-planing, pitch black except for the lightening, which was dazzling.

Anon Without A Name said...

SH - no storm here :-( I saw lots of people talking about a big storm over towards where you are, but it missed us completely

Sherlock said...

We saw the aeroplanes and helicopters fly past for the queen!

Lancs. Anon said...

That's cool, Sherlock! You don't see much low-level flying these days. We used to get training flights over us from time to time, very startling when you're not expecting it.

Sherlock said...

There are thousands of naked people on bike cycling through the streets! I want to do it.

pandabob said...

They've got decent weather for it haven't they Sherlock :-)

Are they doing it for a reason or just for fun?

Z said...

Are the bikers wearing any sort of... protection... between themselves and the bike seats?? That sounds very uncomfortable! But also very fun.

Sherlock, do you guys have an annual 'ride the subway in just your pants' day like we do? I imagine you'd enjoy that one too!

SH- we got the storm here too. It was like driving through a river, but I got some amazing pictures of the clouds. At least the humidity finally broke, I was drowning just by breathing all day yesterday.

Greg Lestrade said...

Nothing to protect bike from rider... If you're looking to hire a Boris bike in the next few days, take wet wipes ;)

Sherlock said...

It says it was against our car culture and reliance on oil on their website but I think it just looked fun and some people were painted or wore things but lots were naked and I think we should do it next time

Greg Lestrade said...

SO close... merda.

pandabob said...

One point is better than none Greg ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

I shall hope to end the day with a few more. If I can stay awake. Feel like I might nod off at any moment!

Anonymous said...

Sometimes an early bedtime is just what the doctor ordered. Even if the actual doctor has to stay up to make sure Sherlocks get to bed.

fA

Greg Lestrade said...

fA....I think you fail to understand what is due to take place tonight!

I've been shattered all day, I think it's because I'm holding a migraine at bay.

pandabob said...

you can't go to sleep before tomorrow Greg or you won't know if you were right to go for Italy rather than England ;-)

Joolz said...

Can you take some of those good but hugely expensive migraine tabs now to ward it off so you're fresh for the big game. Were you torn about who to pick or was it an easy decision, Greg.

Greg Lestrade said...

Joolz - I think they're making me feel tired! Even if they stop the migraine they leave like a 'hangover' type feeling.

Wasn't easy! I think it could end a draw. Italy have a few injuries, England can always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory though ;)

Anonymous said...

It did cross my mind that you'd care about the outcome of that game, just doing my best to represent for the tyranny of the body! Surely you could take a nap before the game starts? There's a couple of hours yet, if I've counted the time change correctly.

In any case, I hope the migraine stays away.

fA

pandabob said...

and miss Uruguay v costa rica fA ;-)

Mycroft said...

You are not amusing, Lestrade.

I also feel you should know I have scored a 131072 tile in 2048. I do not believe it is possible to go higher, as the board is too small.

Piplover said...

Lestrade, I take the same migraine stuff as you, and I get the same hangover feeling. But at least the migraine is gone! I've found that if I take the medicine right as the migraine starts it gets rid of it faster and keeps it away longer. But I don't like taking it more than I have to. Hope you feel better soon.

Joolz said...

That is absolutely brilliant, Mycroft, well done. Once you've got into the rhythm of it is it just a case of following the same pattern or is it random every time.

That's awful about the side effects, Greg, but I suppose anything is better than the pain. Hope you recover a bit by kick off.

pandabob said...

That is impressive Mycroft. Will you be watching later or is it past sensible bedtime?

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh yeah, it's way better than having the migraine - I do need to start taking it sooner, I'm very bad at that. Always wait and see if I can do without.

Well done Mycroft. And I amuse myself, if no one else ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay...I forgive that goal, ruining my chance of extra points, because he's an Arsenal boy. Well done, lad! Come back and put some in the net for us soon!

Anonymous said...

Pandabob, some sacrifices must be made to be fresh for the game that matters!

Mycroft, Lestrade may not amuse, but are the facts of the matter not as he states? Congrats on beating the game. Hope you find some other puzzle to fill fallow moments now that this one has been defeated.

Z said...

Mycroft, how??? I've been stuck on 8192 for weeks.

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, Costa Rica have certainly shown Uruguay! Good match. Good for England??

pandabob said...

a draw would have been good for both England and Italy, Costa rica winning is just as bad for whoever loses tonight as if Uruguay had won really because beating Costa Rica won't be easy for anyone if you look at that display!

Scottish Anon said...

I'm going to be wildly cheering for England tonight - and that's possibly the first time I've ever said that ;-)

I drew England in our sweepstake at work. Usually I end up with a minnow so I'm quite pleased, especially after that shock result just now. A draw would have been better but I can't really see CR pulling another result like that out the bag. Then again, going by the games so far, anything can happen!

Greg Lestrade said...

Good luck with your sweepstake draw, Scottish Anon - I was very torn with the Netherlands last night, but sweepstake is worth cold hard cash, this is just worth glory...so had to go with the cash!!

Greg Lestrade said...

Maf has been set free from her cone of shame, because she's with us on the sofa. We're watching her, but so far she doesn't seem to be trying to lick/chew her stitches... just John.

Scottish Anon said...

Ha, exactly! Money and a nice bottle of booze trumps all loyalty!

I really think England have a decent shot though. I work in the bookies (we take our sweepstakes very seriously ;-) ) and the odds for a lot of the games... I know in theory how they're worked out but a lot of them seem plucked from thin air, it's such an open tournament.

If you've never bet before, it might be worth a punt or two! I've already found some frankly stupid odds online and I'm up £70 on two £2 bets!

Greg Lestrade said...

Come on England!

Greg Lestrade said...

Come on Italy!

Greg Lestrade said...

Very nice set piece. Beautifully done.

Why don't they always put someone on the far post for corners??

Greg Lestrade said...

And a great counter from England!!

pandabob said...

half way there and still no idea who might win this thing! how you holding up Greg?

Greg Lestrade said...

better than the England physio! Although Neville is almost putting me to sleep.

I'm lying on John, half asleep, Maf is on me, fully asleep, John is stroking my head and her back...

pandabob said...

That sounds like a lovely way to watch a match :-)

The physio didn't look great and now we need to make sure no one gets injured because there's no one to fix them!

Greg Lestrade said...

But Phil Neville could put them under for an op by talking them to sleep...

Joolz said...

Phil is definitely lacking a tad of enthusiasm, isn't he. ;)
Very hard to call as anonybob says.

As long as he doesn't get mixed up, Greg, you'll be fine. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

ha, what, and at the end of the night put me in a cone and spoon with Maf? ;)

Anon Without A Name said...

You could fall asleep on John's head...

Anonymous said...

If anything exciting breaks through the sleepy haze, remember that Maf's going to dig all claws straight into you if you holler and jump up out of John's lap.

Good luck everyone. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks Joolz, you're doing a great job!

Sherlock will be over the moon again in the morning when he sees he's with the leading group.

Joolz said...

Thanks :) It's good fun and I'm glad everyone is enjoying it. It gives the whole tournament a more personal feel, I think, and adds a bit of interest to it all even if you don't like footy.

Yes Sherlock is doing very well and deserves to be up there with you and DW after your perfect scores with Italy - you were right after all. Hope you make it to bed cone-free. ;)

REReader said...

Lestrade, I take the same migraine stuff as you, and I get the same hangover feeling.

Likewise, and also ditto. But it does work if you take it early enough. (Only I always want to see if naproxen sodium will work by itself...so I don't always take it early enough.) I hope it's managed to stave off the migraine for you, L.

I also feel you should know I have scored a 131072 tile in 2048.

And I was so excited to finally get 2048! I lack the patience to plan ahead in it, just as I do in chess, so I daresay I'll never get a higher score. (I save my store of patience, such as it is, for family... ;))

I seem to be doing nicely at the soccer thing, especially for someone who has never seen a match! That's nifty. :)

Bit of an odd one for most of this household.

Joolz said...

I think a Happy 'Nanny & DI' Day is just as important. :)

Have a great day everyone.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's a lot cooler here today. Sherlock has chased us around the park on his bike.

Maf is at home asleep, because eating breakfast clearly tired her right out.

I'd like to come back as a cat, I think.

John H. D. Watson said...

Breakfast can be tiring. It comes so early in the day.

Greg Lestrade said...

It wasn't early today,

Sherlock was early, breakfast was ... not early enough. Or alcoholic enough. Or followed by enough nap.

John H. D. Watson said...

How are you doing now? You do look slightly grey.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's my natural shade ;) I would definitely be a grey cat. It's a shame we don't have markings, isn't it? I'd like to be stripey.

I'm okay.

Sherlock said...

I had to get up early and see if I was still winning and I am and it's not fair they play football when I'm in bed when I don't know the score!

pandabob said...

It it is a bit annoying I agree Sherlock but it's nice to able to enjoy the day in the sun without it being interrupted by football isn't it? :-)

You are doing really well in the game, are you sure you don't know more about it than you led us to believe ;-)

Sherlock said...

We had lettuce leaves out of our allotment for lunch today and we grew them and there's still more because if you only take the outside ones they still keep growing.

Anon Without A Name said...

Eating food you grew yourself is really good, isn't it? Almost makes the hard work worth it :-p

John, Lestrade - should we be worried abut greyishness? Or is it "just" migraine hangover? And yes, marking would be cool, I think. Of course, some of us choose to mark ourselves, but that's a bit different...

If you're mixing drinks, I'll go with a gin & soda. (Yay virtual drinking! Cheap and healthy, if not always quite as satisfying.)

Good luck with today's matches.

L, sometimes I find that, since I get all tensed up against the headache, the imitrex doesn't work as well until I take a soaking bath for a while. (A shoulder/neck rub might be just as good, if you can find a volunteer or two... ;)) I hope it kicks in soon for you.

Sherlock, I have to say eating something you've planted sounds a lot more fun than eating something you just bought--and it's certainly fresher and so tastier! I didn't know that about lettuces continuing to grow that way, that's cool!

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't see any poll results...can anyone else?

And to level things out, Happy Day to everyone who's doing everything a father could/should/would but isn't for whatever reason.

Hmm. Good luck with the migraine, then. Just give in for a few hours and do all the things that might help. Fingers crossed it recedes and/or you are able to sleep through some of it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, well done Switzerland, that's my boys!! Want a drink, Nameless?

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay, feel free to correct any of this, because I'm not at all sure my brain is working well enough to do this, but Sherlock wanted me to work out the points again (nothing if not competitive.)

I think the current standings are:

Lestrade - 8

DW, Sherlock -7

Joolz, Paula, Nameless, RR - 6

SH, MT88, Z, Mag -5

Lancs, KHolly, Graham22, KT - 4

AnonyBob, Ro -3

So the field is spreading out a bit, but there's a long way to go yet!

Anon Without A Name said...

Always happy to raise a glass to more points, Cheers, Lestrade!

Sherlock said...

Joolz Lestrade said I should ask that if we say it will be a draw and it is but we didn't get the number right do we still get a point like if it was a win or a lose and you got that bit right? Thank you.

Greg Lestrade said...

The French need to pull themselves together and calm down. Lucky that wasn't a red.

Joolz said...

Lestrade is right, Sherlock, yes you get 1 point if you guess a game is a draw and 2 points if you get the draw score exactly correct.

If we end up with a tie at the end of the competition then it will be decided by whoever has scored more 2 point correct answers but the field is spreading out a little now and as Greg says we still have a long way to go.

Greg Lestrade said...

Does anyone have any friends in Brazil who could go and lend Jonathan Pearce some glasses to aid his commentary? He doesn't seem to be watching the correct game, or in possession of any common sense.

Sherlock said...

Lestrade keeps shouting at the man talking on the TV.

pandabob said...

that is a perfectly reasonable reaction to Jonathon Pearce Sherlock ;-)

Sherlock said...

Why does he talk about football when he keeps getting things wrong?

Greg Lestrade said...

exactly, Sherlock.

And damn, could've kept it at 2!

Joolz said...

Exactly, Greg, they would still have won at 2-0, 3 is just being greedy! ;) Though I'm sure anonybob and SH wouldn't agree with that. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well done AnonyBob and SH! I doff my cap to you.

....someone tell Jonathan Pearce the only person who was confused, or thought the goal was controversial, is him.

pandabob said...

3 was the perfect number, sorry if anyone feels otherwise ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, I think that France should've gone down to ten men before Honduras did! But after that, I wouldn't have been surprised if it had ended 4 or 5, really. Outclassed, outplayed, and all Honduras could do was foul and play rough.

John has told me I can calm down after putting Sherlock to bed by brushing Maf... maybe I was shouting a little ;)

pandabob said...

I thought the French lad was lucky but how Honduras weren't down to 7 I don't know!!

Greg Lestrade said...

Good heavens, you folks are having a good time over here. Hello! *waves*

L, I found myself walking past your office today quite by accident (literally, I wasn't clear on exactly where it was until I passed it) and automatically waved up at you as I passed. It was reflex. Been thinking of you lot frequently since I got here on Sunday afternoon, especially when I see schoolchildren in the parks. On the plane over here my mother had me convinced for a few minutes that she had bought some old 1830s map of cholera outbreaks in London with her to use to orient herself. Eventually I realized she was kidding but she had me going for a while.

Good luck in the World Cup competition, all! There was much shouting at the game that was on when we were in a pub for dinner about 7 PM Sunday night.

I haven't gotten a score over about 3000 in any version of 2048, but I do tend to play the confusing versions with all the animated pictures in them.
