30 January 2015

I can't do what ten people tell me to do, So I guess I'll remain the same.

Sherlock has texted me to inform me he really NEEDS a pet owl, and even if we won't let him have one, he'll get one when he's older.

So...there we go. I wasn't even sure how to respond. Except obviously he actually texts me using John's phone, so when my message 'Right. Do what you like once you move out.' appeared on the screen I think John thought he'd missed half an argument or something! I got a very questioning text back...

...just realised I started writing this many hours ago, and never continued. Stuff came up.

One of my officers fell down the stairs while searching a house this morning...Bruised ego luckily seems to be the worst of his injuries.

I feel like I've been in meetings forever recently. Not why I became a police officer!!

Mycroft's back with us this weekend. He is currently being regaled with tales of guinea pigs. Lucky that was last weekend - I'm not sure we could have coped with the dogs in the mix as well! The pigs would have made a nice mouthful for them...

Not sure what we're going to do with ourselves.

I heard a good quote which makes me think of Mycroft the other day - "The night hides the world, but reveals the universe."

And have you heard they're going to move Dippy in the National History Museum?? Unbelievable! Going to replace him with a blue whale. Which I'm sure will be spectacular, but... Dippy... (Mycroft has shaken his head and said he can't believe people have given it a nickname.)

They re-created Winston Churchill's Funeral today, on the river. Would've been interesting to see. I think the river police led the boats out - they get all the best jobs! Maybe I should apply for a transfer.

I can't think why you need a pet owl, Sherlock, unless you're planning to attend Hogwarts?

And who or what is Dippy? (I'm sure it's shocking I don't know, put it down to my American-ness.)

John H. D. Watson said...

I am shocked at your lack of song lyric subject line. Shocked!

When I looked back and saw about the owl there was a moment when I wondered if I'd written it. I mean, owls are pretty great...but I don't usually use that many exclamation points.

Greg Lestrade said...

I had a title! Where's my title gone??

RR - Dippy was a model of a diplodocus skeleton - full size - that has always been in the entrance hall.

Greg Lestrade said...

my title has been found. I am a detective, afterall... it was greyed out on the post. I've no idea why!

REReader said...

Heh, heh--glad you tracked that down. :)

Thank you for the explantion, L. Now I won't be making up things it could be for the next 25 hours, which I would have done!

Have a good weekend all! (And Shabbat shalom. :))

Joolz said...

Poor John, a very confusing text to receive I'm sure, score one for the owls. ;)

It's white over out just as I'm going to bed so I'm going to cheer now because I'm sure by morning when I would actually have a chance to go out in it it will be gone. :§ Hope you get some there, Sherlock.

Lovely to have Mycroft home for the weekend, have fun together. :)

You aren't stealing the blue whale from the Smithsonian, are you? That's ours...

I like that quote, Mycroft.

When I was about knee high to a duck I loved going to the Perth Museam who had a blue whale skeleton in the main hall.

Another favourite one is in the Melbourne Museum: a bone about 3 feet long and nearly a foot in diameter at the big end. "This bone is 100 million years old. Please touch it"

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - no, we have our own whale skeleton they're going to move from it's current gallery into the entrance hall. And they don't know what they'll do with Dippy - he might go on tour.

Becca said...

I love the bit with the cell phone - made me laugh out loud thinking of John being confused.

I came half a wobble close to badly injuring my ankle last night, coming down the stairs. Scared the ever living crap out of myself.

Anonymous said...

Becca! Glad you escaped tearing up your ankle. That would have been just the cherry on the effing sundae, yes? Saw on the other blog you've been shopping and MRI-ing. Hope they find out something helpful. And not too scary. I also hope that you got to buy clothes you liked, that were better than just "appropriate!"

Too warm for snow here, but plenty of rain. I cleaned and did yard work with great steadiness all day and am pretty sure I'll sleep the sleep of the just. Hope so, anyway.

I've met people who I believe are truly evil - honestly not a decent bone in their body. Many of them have killed someone. Some of them have killed more than one person. They have done horrible things to good people. And I've never wanted to see them dead - never wanted to end their lives. Although I'll admit I wouldn't have shed a tear if it had happened, either.

And yet there are people - kids, many of them - out there, who will kill each other over being looked at the wrong way. Over broken property. Over being in the wrong road, or wearing the wrong clothes... it staggers me.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Greg. It is heartbreaking. And such a waste.

fA

pandabob said...

That doesn't sound good Greg :-(

I will never understand taking a life, or to be honest even thinking about taking a life never mind doing it over something totally pointless!!

REReader said...

... I...well, I don't entirely agree. I certainly can't fathom rating human life so cheap as to kill casually, and I've never hated someone I've met enough to want them dead. But if the only way I could see to stop someone killing (me or someone else) was to kill them, I would do it if I could, and I do not think I would regret it.

REReader said...

It sounds like you're having a bad day, L--I hope it improves.

Greg Lestrade said...

I think that's different RR. You still wouldn't want them dead, I assume - or, I should say, if I was in that position, I wouldn't want to kill them. I would want them to be incapacitated to the point they posed no further risk of harm. If they ended up dead, like I said, there are people I wouldn't shed a tear for, but I wouldn't have wanted to kill them. My intention going into such a situation would never be to end their life, although I admit it could be the outcome, regardless of that original intention.

REReader said...

I think...I think what I would want or intend wouldn't enter into it, exactly--it would be a matter of stopping them from causing serious harm, however it could be done. No?

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, kind of. I know I'd never want to kill anyone, so I know I'd never go into that situation intending their death. But then I've also been trained to have to make the right decision every time in sudden, violent, situations... which is obviously impossible, but probably does give officers a slight advantage over people who aren't in those kinds of situations on a regular basis.

REReader said...

I imagine the training gives you more options than someone without, which would certainly be an advantage, yes.

REReader said...

And of course, anyone without training is more likely to do nothing than anything, right or wrong.

Greg Lestrade said...

I so very nearly had Sherlock believing that a lot of internet hype was for a day celebrating superb owls. So nearly. But then he worked it out and told me I was stupid, ugly and stupid again. So!

REReader said...

It would be ever so much more interesting if it WERE about owls, superb or otherwise!

Anonymous said...

Some days you are just the platonic ideal of a dad, Greg! Those superb owls were strong work!

fA

REReader said...

It's not quite 4 in the morning here, but I'm having a spell of positional vertigo so I can't lie down, and I've been wandering around. I just looked out the window and there's a thick blanket of snow out there, and not a snow plow or salt truck in sight. It's quite lovely--but only because I don't have to try to get to work in the morning, I work from home!

(Somehow I feel the need to apologize to Sherlock for having snow. I'm sorry, Sherlock, it's by no wish of mine! If wishing worked, you'd have it ALL.)

REReader said...

(Also, if it helps, no one here is going to be out playing in it--the National weather Service has us down for a 100% chance of freezing rain to start any time now and to continue all day.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock just needs to live somewhere else... I bet the moors have been pretty snowy too. Although i don't fancy a run around on a moor with hidden snow-covered bogs. London just isn't any good for snow!

Anonymous said...

We had an inch of snow forecast over Saturday night, and instead I woke up to about four inches. I took pictures: http://imgur.com/a/DDdEN

Also,my roommate got a leash for the cat and has been taking her on walks. I haven't gotten pictures of that yet, though.

Well, we´ve got snwo, too, Sherlock, just over the Channel. It´s rather wet, perfect for making snowmen and enabling lorrys to close entire roads by standing diagonally to the road. I was happily able to work from home today - just hope there´ll be no new snow... it´s already 10-15 cm! More than enough for me, I`m afraid. I´d be sending the snow back to you if I were able.

REReader said...

Those photos are beautiful, Ella! (I bet the cat won't go walking in that, though, leash or no leash. :)) It's not pretty here any more; we've had plows and cars and sleet, and it's an icy, slushy, snowy mess out there.

TODAY IS GROUNDHOGS DAY THOUGH.....EVEN IF YESTERDAY COULD NOT BE ABOUT OWLS......

Greg Lestrade said...

and what was the Groundhog's thoughts on the day?

REReader said...

Don't know about where Anonymous is, but no groundhogs were scurrying away from their shadows around here--nor was any other living creature. (We got more snow and sleet in the afternoon.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, apparently we might get a tiny dusting of snow overnight. Glad Sherlock didn't see that before bed, or we'd have been woken up at 3am with him checking...

REReader said...

Got my fingers crossed for you! :)

Wishing Sherlock all the good luck in the snow lottery. If the combined power of kids wishing could make it so, I'm sure he'd have enough to play in.

Where I live, six more weeks of winter IS an early spring. Hope those who want more, get snow.

Sherlock said...

THERE was SNOW. And Lestrade and I went out before he went to work and to the park and loads of it hadn't even been touched by anyone yet but it was only just a tiny bit but enough to make everything white where people hadn't walked on it and I hope we get more now.

And John said we were bonkers when we got back inside because he was still in bed.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations Sherlock! Lucky you have Lestrade about. John missed out, snow is always the best when there are still big untouched swathes of it. Hope you get a little more.

YAY SNOW!

We've had a very light dusting of snow here, just enough to look nice not enough to stop me going to work though.

I do find myself in agreement with John, Sherlock :-)

Small Hobbit said...

I can't say I'm impressed with what snow we've got - just enough to freeze to the windscreen and take 10 minutes to clean off. :(

And I'm with John too - in thought, not physically ;)

pandabob said...

I'm glad you got snow Sherlock and that you were able to sneak out in it before everyone else :-). We have some, just enough to make snowballs to throw at each other on the school run, but it's made everywhere look very pretty :-)

I hope the day treats everyone well.

REReader said...

I'm so glad you got some snow, Sherlock--I hope it was a harbinger of more. And how lovely that Lestrade and you got out to see it while it was still beautiful and white and there! (It was really good of him to go out so early so you could.)

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm pretty sure the word John started to say wasn't 'bonkers'...but another, questioning our parentage, not our sanity. And all because he wouldn't go out to the snow, so we brought some in to him... Kind, i call it. He called me something quite different...

Small Hobbit said...

How very thoughtful of you. I really don't understand why John didn't appreciate it.

Greg Lestrade said...

I know! Who doesn't love snow? Snow in bed is like...breakfast in bed but better!

REReader said...

Also colder... :D

Becca said...

That sounds like the perfect amount of snow, just enough to dust the trees and the parks, but not enough to be any bother.

Anonymous said...

John is never going to grow old. You'll keep him young till he dies. Which might be from the shock of cold snow in a warm bed, someday. ;-)

Sal showed me a post from one of her neices' on FaceBook. It says 'Being gay is like being left handed - some people are, most people aren't, no one knows why.'... so what happened to John, my lefty husband? He's clearly just a very rare and precious thing... (and yes, before anyone asks, I am aiming to be back in the good books before bedtime tonight ;) )

pandabob said...

The good books are the best place to be Greg ;-)

how went work?

I hope you're all having a nice relaxing evening.

Greg Lestrade said...

work was good, yeah. Making progress, slowly.

Cooked John a nice dinner, he seems to be the forgiving type ;)

Joolz said...

As they always say 'food is the way to a man's heart', so you can't go wrong. ;) Hope you're fully forgiven by bedtime, Greg, or you may find Maf has taken your spot. ;)

Glad you got some snow, Sherlock, even though it was minor & what fun for you & Lestrade to get to have a quick play before everyone else was up. Here's hoping it's lots more next time. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm fairly sure Maf and John share a view on snow, and it's place in the world - nowhere near their warm little cocoon.

REReader said...

I must confess that I think snow belongs outside, too--mostly because New York snow gets filthy very, very fast!

Greg Lestrade said...

we carefully selected clean snow for John and Maf.

REReader said...

And you were out so early most of it hadn't had time to get dirty!

Unknown said...

nice pix of the snow! I have not gone out with my camera yet, and by now I would need snowshoes to do so. on top of the 6-8" we got last week, we have at least another foot. Might get more later on, but I'm hoping tomorrow and Friday night at least will stay clear.
an event about Superb Owls would be much more interesting. I would pay attention to something like that. ;)

pandabob said...

Time to keep warm and get some exercise then Greg ;-)

good luck getting Sherlock out to school when the rest of you are off!

Greg Lestrade said...

We just have to remind Sherlock that we're very very boring, whereas school is full of new interesting things to learn about.

Lovely moon tonight. I wish it would snow. It's so beautiful when there's moonlight on the snow. I was biking back home from London around on Christmas or new year and it had snowed. I just had t stop, and walk through the fields, where it was untouched. Nearly died of hypothermia, but it was worth it. ;)

Anonymous said...

Lovely image, snow on the fields.

fA

REReader said...

The image of moonlight on snow fields takes me right back to grad school--Ithaca gets lots of lake effect snow from the Finger Lakes, and walking across campus on clear moonlit nights...yeah, very bright, bright enough to read by, but nothing like daylight. Magical. Thank you for calling up that memory!

Joolz said...

How lovely to have days off together, so much time to do so many boring things. ;)

Yes the moon was gorgeous, so big and low, it would have been magical with snow too - definitely worth risking hypothermia for. Let's hope we get some proper snow soon.

Have a great day everyone. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

It's snowing at the moment. We've had to leave for school early to have any hope of ever getting Sherlock there. Is not settling, just tiny flakes floating about, all of which he wants to catch.

Greg Lestrade said...

Beautiful day now. The sun has chased off the snow/rain. I have a gorgeous husband to go out and enjoy it with.

Becca said...

Ah, snow. Sadly, it is snowing here. But I shall not let it deter me from going out to see my new surgeon. Hopefully he is decent.

REReader said...

Have a good day, John and L! (We were supposed to have more snow last night and today, but happily we had the same kind of snow you had--just flakes floating around and leaving no trace, and only for a short while.)

And good luck, Becca.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm at work. Which is just as well, given my mood post-football.

pandabob said...

It's always good to have a distraction on a bad football day I find ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah - got another distraction, too... Mycroft has volunteered to look after Sherlock at the start of half term, in his words 'If you and John want to go somewhere for St. Valentine's day'.... this is a generous offer I think we need to take up, as very soon I'm sure Mycroft will find himself far too busy on that particular night to play babysitter ;) (even if only busy explaining to people it's a ridiculous, over-hyped construct) So....what to do? Where to go?

pandabob said...

That is an amazing offer and really can't be missed. Somewhere quiet and secluded, where you can do exactly what you want when you want would be my suggestion, you're both so busy fitting to a timetables most of the time!

Half the fun of a trip is planning it though so enjoy :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Quiet and secluded sounds nice. No horses please.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've already got an idea... how do you feel about seals?

John H. D. Watson said...

I feel positive about seals.

Greg Lestrade said...

How do you feel about me spending a weekend talking like a bad stereotype of a WWII pilot? I say, old chap, spiffing? Lots of Biggles references? Lots of 'rogering' ;) ?

Becca said...

Wow, that's really nice of Mycroft! Maybe take a ride somewhere, if the weather's nice, and find a fireplace to lie in front of?

John H. D. Watson said...

I could probably handle it...why?

Greg Lestrade said...

There's a little place, about 3 hours ride away, who happen to have a vacancy... it's a 1940s airfield, and you stay in the control tower, which is completely refurbished in authentic 1940s decor. It was a Bomber Command squadron in the war. And it's by the coast...where there are seals.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sounds amazing :) Let's do it.

Greg Lestrade said...

All right, Algy! I'll get command on the radio and arrange our leave, and tell the CO he's Sherlock-sitting.

John H. D. Watson said...

You're slightly mad, and I love you.

Greg Lestrade said...

I say, not very polite to call your oppo 'mad' when he's offered to spring for your pit! I may not share my ginger beer with you for that...

Anon Without A Name said...

Yeah, that's the sort of threat that works better if there's even the slightest hint of a chance that you might actually go through with it...

(Nice one, Mycroft!)

Anonymous said...

L, you are always surprising, and Mycroft is again a gem. I am on a New Mexico/South Texas road trip with a friend, there are two real action items attached but mostly just sightseeing. NOT complaining though. I wouldn't dare!

Hope the surgeon inspires confidence, Becca!

Woke up this morning face to face with Maf. John had disappeared. Some searching discovered him completely under the duvet, head and all, fast asleep.

I always like the fnug bunched up around my shoulders/back, with my feet sticking out. John likes to be warmer than the sun, if possible, so I guess he'd gone burrowing, leaving me to be greeted by fish-breath instead of my husband's beautiful face when I awoke.

Joolz said...

That was certainly a shock to the system then, Greg - a face full of Maf. ;) Glad you found the better half of that combo quickly though. ;) I have to leave my feet out too, too hot otherwise.

What a brilliant young man you are Mycroft & what fun for Sherlock to get to do things together. :)

Having a break away to yourselves sounds amazing fun. I can just imagine the pair of you Toodle pipping your way through the whole thing. ;)

Have a great day everyone. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, John would have you believe my feet are always cold. But that's completely false. After five mins in bed you could fry eggs on them.

I've grazed my way through an entire bag of Mini Eggs doing paperwork this morning...I guess a run is scheduled in my future...

I should come to the airfield and especially if there are still aeroplanes and I could fly one.

REReader said...

That's why it's so good of you to stay with Mycroft, Sherlock, and let John and Lestrade have some time together, just the two of them. Just as it's very considerate of Mycroft to think of it and to offer.

I actually found the video on another site, first, which then led me to this guy's actual website. It was a young lady having her ...self cast though, so I didn't watch it. Not really my area of interest. And it only mentioned that he cast chocolates here, not light up ones!

So quiet today--I hope everyone is okay.

I've been out and about, running errands all over. We're expected to get more precipitation tomorrow (erm, yes, snow) followed by a deep freeze--temps in the 7F to 3F range at night, low teens during the day, well below freezing--and that's not something I want to be out in any longer than I absolutely have to be. Brrrrr!

I guess because she fits on Johns head she feels like she ought to fit into my helmet? Is that cat logic? Regardless, i'll be offering her John's helmet next time. I'm still finding her fur on everything, even though I vacuumed out my helmet yesterday.

She and John virtually share colouring, so he'd be fine,

Sounds like your weekend is off to a good start, L & John--Sherlock and Mycroft, I hope you two are enjoying yourselves as well!

Greg Lestrade said...

We have arrived.

The bathroom is... Amazing. And so very green.

The potato trucks and milk tankers on the way up were... Not amazing.

Greg Lestrade said...

DW I'm certain the M6 has been treating you exactly as it treats everyone foolish enough to set tyre on it.

DW, nice to hear from you.

Becca, snooze on!

I am back from my little road trip. High point: stargazing (no telescope) in the Davis Mountains (of south Texas.) It was the first time in a long, long, time I've been somewhere high/clear/dark enough to see the Milky Way. Stunning and exhilarating.

I am curious as to what kind of amazing 1940s airbase + very green + bathroom + get-away-weekend adds up to. I hope you two and the two at home all have a great weekend.

I have an idea where you might be, Lestrade. I might have spread tar on a roof in a conservation effort there sometime in my previous life. The potato trucks are indeed quite frustrating, though sometimes they'll be nice and pull over to let the mile-long queue of cars behind them go. Hope your weekend's a great one!

Greg Lestrade said...

Well we're about to get in a small boat to go and see some seals

Greg Lestrade said...

...seals were seen.

Then we went to some sort of nirvana for Sherlocks...a boat serving pancakes...we'll have to bring him up here!

Desert Wanderer said...

Surprised you're on the phone at all. ;) Hope you're having a good night.

Greg Lestrade said...

We have a 1940s bed... With 1940s squeaks. Last night I almost died laughing... John may be too worried about my imminent demise to try anything tonight ;)

Anonymous said...

I get the impression that if laughing was going to kill you, you'd be long gone. (That's a compliment.)

And we're heading home. Lovely weekend. Had a great walk along the coast this morning after breakfast.

REReader said...

Sounds like a wonderful time, so nice to hear!

I hope Mycroft and Sherlock had a fun weekend themselves. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Home to our gorgeous boys. The house is intact (crockery...not so much. And the animals are copping the blame for that...) it's nice to be back.

REReader said...

Eh, what's a few plates and cups. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

exactly. And Arsenal won. A good day all round.

And I'm off tomorrow, too, so I get to see the boys.

REReader said...

Awesome!

Hope it's a nice family day for all.

And that those of you in the states getting more cold weather & snow/ice/sleet get a break soon.

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah, it's been lovely. I do love spending time with these boys. :)

REReader said...

They're off from school this week, then? (It's a holiday here today, but I don't imagine you celebrate President's Day!)

Greg Lestrade said...

yeah, it's half term, unbelievably... so they're both off this week.

REReader said...

I am looking for another word for "lovely." :)

Greg Lestrade said...

oooo, Man U had a lucky escape there....and now they face US. The fight is on!

pandabob said...

I'm glad you got to spend a good day with your boys Greg, good luck with whatever today brings :-)

I bet you're glad you didn't draw Bradford!!

Desert Wanderer said...

The kids in my class keep trying to get me to support Stoke City. I don't know how I should feel about that.

Joolz said...

Mmm, delicious pancakes for tea. Anyone else indulging? My lot all have various toppings, sweet & savoury, but it has to be sugar & lemon for me. Once again my other half takes the title of best tosser. ;)

Small Hobbit said...

We had pancake races and pancakes at work, and yes I went for sugar and lemon.

Greg Lestrade said...

I shall be having a good old toss later and then enjoying the delicious results...

REReader said...

Pancakes...yummmm.

Any other plans for the half term?

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't believe any of us will ever be able to move again after the number of pancakes we've dispatched.

REReader said...

(And I bet Sherlock is already bounding around. :))

Desert Wanderer said...

I assume you've demonstrated your tossing skills adequately, Lestrade?

Greg Lestrade said...

My tossing has yeilded superb results, as always. I do get a lot of practice.

Desert Wanderer said...

You must have very deft, skilled hands.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's all your the fingering I do, DW. I mean, guitar playing is very good for giving you deft hands...

REReader said...

...DW, you have been missed!

Anonymous said...

DW, your skills as displayed here are solidly far above average! The rest of us can't even come up with a pale imitation.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock: I want pancakes!
Me: You can't just eat pancakes for the rest of your life. It's not healthy.
Sherlock: So I could, then I'd get unhealthy and then I'd die but I'd STILL have eaten them for the rest of my life.

...never try reasoning with small geniuses.

Desert Wanderer said...

I had heard that the fingering was the most difficult part. Far harder than say just the stroking.

(I'm sure I don't know what y'all mean.)

Greg Lestrade said...

well, stroking comes more naturally...fingering takes care! Want to make sweet music, not a terrible racket...

Desert Wanderer said...

Ah, much like blowing instruments. Not really something you can pick up automatically, even though you'd think it's not much different from things you've been doing all your life. But then comes the time for the performance, and if you haven't been practicing to get it just right, you'll quickly lose your audience.

Greg Lestrade said...

But surely, DW, you just...put your lips together, and bloooow.

Desert Wanderer said...

I'd have expected more from a man of your experience, Lestrade. You can't just blow on any old instrument and hope for the best. There's a bit of finesse involved. Technique, you know.

Greg Lestrade said...

Where have you been all my life, DW :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I think I might have to give John 2 gallons of Red Bull and some coffee for dinner. He seemed to have been severely Sherlocked...

REReader said...

Strenuous day?

Greg Lestrade said...

strenuous week!

REReader said...

Well, it's Thursday. The end is in sight!

pandabob said...

Kids love the first day of the holidays kids carers love the last ;-)

I hope you don't totally collapse tomorrow John!
