Since we've no place to go...

Sherlock's face will soon be stuck to the window, and there will be a path worn in the carpet where he keeps bouncing to the window to check on the (lack of) snowfall.

Obviously we don't have a driveway...change it to something like 'scooping snow to form snowballs'.

I don't think Sherlock's trek back and forth to the windows would be as bad if he weren't always followed by two hounds bounding after him. The number of times my paperwork has gone flying today makes me think I should actually invest in a desk and do this all properly. Except that would feel like I was intending to work from home, which I'm not.

Last night Sherlock didn't settle down until about eleven, and even then only when we promised we'd wake him if it snowed.

He appeared in our bedroom at about 2am. We assuredhim it hadn't snowed, and he clambered in with us and fell asleep. He's like sleeping with a nuclear reactor that wiggles though, so once he was asleep, I carried him back to his own bed. I have no idea how John can sleep through that.

He showed up again at about 5. He was given some milk, his favourite medical textbook from John's shelves, and tucked in at the foot of the bed, reading about diseases of the pancreas. Out loud. With John occasionally mumbling corrections to his pronounciation.

Then he fell asleep on John's legs, which is hardly surprising, given how little sleep he'd had, so we did actually all get a bit of a lie in, before what sounded like an avalanche, but was actually two hounds descending the stairs with Mycroft, woke us up for the final time.

Sherlock's slowly learning not to trust weather forecasters though...

I think we should go for either haircuts or dog walking or hat buying now.

But it is bloody cold out there. And so very nice and warm in here...

(Just need to edit to add Arsenal! 7-1! Finally a result to smile about!) :)

Definitely snowing here now, so you should get it in a few hours.

Sherlock said...

YES! I don't care if it's dark or anything we can go out and play ALL NIGHT.

Desert Wanderer said...

Goodness that sounds like a perfect start to a day. I hope you get all.the snow you like. Feel free to send the excess here...

John H. D. Watson said...

I have no idea how John can sleep through that.

Practice. He's not so bad. You wiggle too, you know.

Sherlock - not quite ALL NIGHT, but we'll at least go out so you can get a good look.

Greg Lestrade said...

But I have soothingly cool feet, which don't align with sensitive parts of you, and my hair doesn't take over the entire pillow.

He is the same temperature as the surface of the sun, I swear.

John H. D. Watson said...

Then he should warm your feet up nicely!

His hair is increasingly resembling Spider, I must admit.

Desert Wanderer said...

You wiggle too, you know.

Completely different context, though, I'd imagine. :P

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. Actually, no, I meant when he's asleep. Although maybe 'flopping about' describes it better...

Greg Lestrade said...

Oi! With you around I am rarely floppy!

When I Wake to him staring at me with 8 eyes I'll worry...

Desert Wanderer said...

Doc, are you implying it's not a 50/50 split on bed space? Maybe he's just trying to force cuddling...

John H. D. Watson said...

Every time you two call me Doc now, I'm picturing the seven dwarves. Thanks for that, L...

It's certainly not 50/50 when Sherlock's there, more like 20% for us, 80% for him. For someone so tiny, he does manage to take up an ungodly amount of space.

Greg Lestrade said...

5% for me, 15 for Danger, 80 for Spiderlock. :)

I can't help you thinking about dwarves, Danger. Just don't go leaving us for any princesses.

DW - I like to think I wouldn't need to 'force' cuddles!

Small Hobbit said...

The seven dwarves, aka Chilly, Wiggly, Floppy, Cuddly, Happy, Hairy and Doc?

Greg Lestrade said...

Right now Doc is trying to muscle in on grumpy and glarey's action...

John H. D. Watson said...

Don't forget the dogs, Drooly and Hungry.

Desert Wanderer said...

DW - I like to think I wouldn't need to 'force' cuddles!

You're right. "force" was a bad choice of word. I apologize.

Chilly, Wiggly, Floppy, Cuddly, Happy, Hairy and Doc

Brilliant, SH! :D

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, if we're actually going to assign names, Mycroft should be Brainy or something. Anthea can be Scary. Mrs Hudson...Nudey? Floozy? ;)

(please don't feed me poisoned apples, unless Danger promises to be my prince charming)

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't worry, DW, I know you don't mean it that way. I just have an unhealthy paranoia and sensitivity.

The description of the three of you curled up in your bed as Sherlock reads a medical text aloud and falls asleep on John's legs is so unbelievably adorable, even though I can imagine how crowded it really was.

We've had a remarkably snow-free winter where I am, after last winter's 3 feet of snow on the ground by this time. Sherlock's excitement is making me miss snow a little more, even though I don't _really_ want to shovel it.

John H. D. Watson said...

I think Mrs Holmes ought to be Scary.

Greg Lestrade said...

She's terrifying!

Oh, you mean her dwarf-name (there's a sentence I never thought I'd write.) You mean she isn't the wicked stepmother? (I know, I know, I'm about to receive my transfer papers to Siberia.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Of course not, she's not wicked at all! Just...mildly terrifying, yes. Prince Charming's mum maybe.

Sherlock said...

I JUST SAW A SNOW! THERE'S SNOW!

Greg Lestrade said...

...so exciting that English goes out the window.

Sherlock, there's...well, there's a few flakes, if you look at a streetlight and squint. It's barely even hit the ground yet, let alone settled!

Hang on, got to go and break up a fight between Mrs Hudson and Anthea about who's the princess...

Anon Without A Name said...

Mrs Hudson...Nudey? Floozy?

I wouldn't be at surprised if Mrs Hudson didn't put you over her knee one of these days, L, talking about her like that :-p

Sherlock - YAY SNOW \o/ We've had fairly continual snowfall for the last few hours, but it's very light. So it's settled, but looks more like a light dusting of icing sugar than anything worth go out to play in. I hope you get a bit more than we did :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - she's a shameless lady! And she gives as good as she gets, don't worry. She's scandalous, the implications she makes about me and the good Doc!

Snow...honestly, so far it is barely snowing, so far. Sherlock's nose will freeze to the window pane, I'm sure.

Greg Lestrade said...

so far...er, what was I saying about English?

CzechReader said...

Nice descriptions. I especially like John correcting Sherlock's pronunciation.

About taking 80% of the bed - my mom swears I was doing this like a baby. I slept with my parents in their bed and I used to twist across the bed in between them and stomp regularly on stomach of one and box the other...

Today there is no snow in Prague. Completely dry and cold weather. Maybe some ice. One of the main headlines of our internet news portals include a young man, a traffic sign, sub-zero temperatures and the young man's tongue. Nice to know about important stuff that's happening, eh? :-)

Anon Without A Name said...

I'm quite sure that Mrs Hudson can give as good as she gets. And I bet her implications about you and John are all true :-p

Greg Lestrade said...

It's easy to forget how young he is when he's getting excited about the possibility of exploding pancreas. He does read very well, but he struggles with a few words (as I would) so John has to help him out.

Sherlock's feet seem to be laser-guided towards parts of me that are very sensitive. Maybe John sleeps with his back to the middle of the bed as a defensive measure, not just to ease his shoulder...

It really is genuinely snowing here now. Visible to the naked eye. We won't be able to contain him much longer...

L - While getting a desk might tempt you to work more often from home, I doubt that it would actually work out that way (for example, Sherlock on your shoulders, degus in your hair, a Doctor Danger who wants you to have proper 'naptimes', etc.).

It would, however, let you keep things organized (or secured) in one place, so your paperwork doesn't go flying. It might also help you avoid saying to Sally or your DCI in the future, "I can't find page 24 of 90. I think the degus or Dogs of War might have eaten it." =)

Greg, John - Good luck with a hyperactive Sherlock. How is Mycroft with the snow fever? Also, I foresee hot chocolate, hot coffee, and maybe a nice message before the night is done?

Sherlock, Mycroft - In the States, the weather website www.wunderground.com provides fairly accurate hourly forecasts during our last snowstorm. The site works best if you can give it an accurate location. It was a bit dodgy when I used it in London, but I didn't know my location beyond "London, UK." It might be of interest of you...at 3 am.

Stay warm all!

I don't know who's more excited, the dogs or Sherlock... I know it's bloody cold though!

John H. D. Watson said...

Fun though!

CzechReader said...

(And whenever I hear/see 'bloody cold', I recall Dead Ringers' parody of James Blunt - Bloody Cold. Feel free to look it up on youtube.)

Sherlock and dogs = a closed loop of excitement feeding off of each other! Definitely!

On the Snow White note, I don't think Prince Charming's mother is much better. I think in the original fairytale she was an ogre or something that eventually tried to eat her grandchildren. Perhaps we should not extend this metaphor too far...

Greg Lestrade said...

It'll be more fun when it really settles - if it does. At the moment it's a bit, but not enough. The dogs keep jumping up and snapping at it.

Ha, maybe not, no, Cylendelmar.

I'll look that up, CR.

It's not snowing here (=east of Paris) which is very unfair because it's snowing everywhere else in the region, I know because of facebook. I'm being very grumpy right now.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, Sherlock would be a nightmare if we hadn't had snow! He is currently happily rolling a huge snowball in the park. It's lovely to see.

Desert Wanderer said...

Has he made any snow angels yet? Or snow angles?

Greg Lestrade said...

We're trying to keep him upright and as dry as possible...

Desert Wanderer said...

Fair enough. Have you? :P

Also, has there been a snowball fight yet?

Small Hobbit said...

L - What happened to your team this week? They've been scoring goals. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

No snow angels, plenty of snowballs.

Sherlock is kamikaze, both John and Mycroft are quite sneaky.

SH - long may it continue!!

Anonymous said...

As a Burnley fan I heartily endorse Rovers getting beaten 7-1!

REReader said...

And which snowball method do you favor, L?

(Sounds like a lovely day, in fact... :))

Greg Lestrade said...

Me? Being a copper, I only use necessary force, obviously, against those who chose to attack me.

Although I may have given John a kiss and the snowball I had in my hand may have inadvertently slid down the back of his neck, a bit...and he may not have forgiven me for that yet, despite throwing most of the contents of the park at me.

REReader said...

What a fortu....er, unfortunate thing to have happened. :D

A very successful day altogether. :)

Desert Wanderer said...

"necessary force" is a pretty broad range. You're a brave man, engaging in guerilla tactics with a battle-proven soldier like that.

Brave. Yeah. That's it...

Greg Lestrade said...

It was an accident! :)

(I found a picture of him in his Christmas jumper. I think the sheer number of snowballs that came my way today may be all the excuse I needed to post it for you all. Just for the interest in the knitting pattern, naturally)

Anonymous said...

It's a good thing I'm too old to throw a tantrum because of unfavourable weather conditions, or I might just have. It's just... boring out there.
Good thing I can read about your antics in the snow instead. Sherlock's probably appreciating it more than I would :)

Anon without snow

Desert Wanderer said...

Yes, because we've proven you need an excuse to post pictures.

But knitting patterns are always good. Give us a chance to use our...knitting sticks or whatever they're called.

Desert Wanderer said...

Nice poll, Lestrade. :D

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, some people seem to be picking the incorrect answer, though...

Desert Wanderer said...

I know! It may be the "generally" that's throwing them off. I'm sure you're not guilty when sleeping, so that may be what they're thinking of...

Small Hobbit said...

But DW, it does depend as to what he's dreaming of.

Desert Wanderer said...

Oh, fair point SH. :D

Greg Lestrade said...

i refuse to be drawn on what I might dream of...

REReader said...

Just for the interest in the knitting pattern, naturally

I'm always interested in new knitting patterns. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

It was you I was thinking of, RR.

REReader said...

It would be very nice of you, that being the case...

:)

CzechReader said...

As I am just a beginner in knitting, I am just sitting silently and admiring the fireworks :-) And my choice in the poll is "Refuse to answer" - I am so not getting in the middle of this chaos! ;-)

Still no snow and the weather forecast predicts temperatures not raising above -7°C for at least 5 days, probably till the end of the week. The cold causes problems with our internet connection at work...

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - I dont recall anyone else getting excited about the pattern of a really quite scary jumper!

CR - sometimes remaining silent is the best option.

Desert Wanderer said...

sometimes remaining silent is the best option.

Especially when the walls of your flat are thin...

CzechReader said...

DW - aaand thank you for that. Our walls are extremely thin. First it was only our bed that was squeaking. Now it's also both armchairs in our room and recently even the floor...

Greg Lestrade said...

Sometimes staying silent is very, very difficult, though. Eh, Danger?

REReader said...

Multi-color knitting is the most challenging.

What size did you say you wear. L? :)

Kira said...

Oh, jumper please...

I'm knitting my first ever pair of proper socks at the moment - after YEARS of knitting.... for my Dad as a birthay pressie!

I'm ALWAYS happy to see knitwear ;)
