Getting nowhere fast.

Mycroft sent us this. I hope I've done this right and it shows up. It's really beautiful. You need to make it big on your screen, and turn the sound up. The music was composed especially for it. You can watch it here, but the link goes to the article with a bit about it.

Thanks to all of you for all your help with me thinking about my Mum. I'll talk to Nicky first, see what she thinks, as she's currently our go-between.

John's looking at pictures of Greek Islands. All of them gorgeous white-and-blue, with clear seas and sunny skies. It's relaxing just looking at the pictures.

And just to balance up, a picture of the goos, doing what the title of the post suggests. I don't know how they manage to run in unison so well...

That video is amazing I could watch it all day thanks for posting it.

Thank Mycroft! It is really beautiful.

I'll just edit in the link for the article that was with it - should have done that.

Anonymous said...

Well thankyou Mycroft then :-) and thanks for the link to the article, it's amazing what some people can create!!

John H. D. Watson said...

It is amazing. And so are the synchronized degus.

Greg Lestrade said...

I find it amusing that they're reasonably happy doing their own thing, most of the time - but sleeping and running they like to do together. Like, the two opposite ends of their daily spectrum.

I think if I was a degu I'd end up tripping up, and just tumbling over and over in the bottom of the wheel...

REReader said...

That video is...amazing, beautiful, awesome in the true sense of the word. I had it at full screen size on my 24-inch monitor and it was breathtaking. Thank you for finding and sending it, Mycroft--and thanks for posting it, L!

Kyoot degus running together! I bet if that wheel were hooked up right, they could generate some meaningful energy there... :)

John H. D. Watson said...

sleeping and running they like to do together

Heh. Like us?

Greg Lestrade said...

Uh...yes. Hadn't thought of it like that. Although not quite like us - I'm not flexible enough to get my nose tucked under my bum and my tail around my ears...

I'd rather keep going to the park though, and not try to co-ordinate in a big wheel.

Anonymous said...

They say pets grow to be like their owners, or is that the other way around?

REReader said...

Although not quite like us - I'm not flexible enough to get my nose tucked under my bum and my tail around my ears...

Switch around the pronouns, and it could work... ;)

REReader said...

(Well, some of the pronouns.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Agreed. Those little wires probably aren't the best if you don't have claws, too.

Awesome video, I've only once managed to see the Milky Way, until I did I hadn't really believed in it! Did see the meteorite last night though.

Maybe they're practicing for this summer's Rodlympics?

Greg Lestrade said...

they're certainly agile little critters. And addicted to their wheel.

Greg Lestrade said...

Shhhhh....Sherlock has discovered some people make big boxes of soil and turf and allow their degus a bit of recreational digging... our sitting room will never be the same again.

REReader said...

Hey, DW, you forgot the hammock jump!

Anonymous said...

Greg - Remind Sherlock that if the degus have a giant box for recreational digging that he won't have enough space for pillow forts in the living room?

~A from NW

John H. D. Watson said...

It could be like an ant farm, with glass so you could see their burrows...

Greg Lestrade said...

You can be in charge of it then... tidying, extracting degus when it's bedtime, finding out just how wide an arc the degus can cover with soil. Stopping two muddy furballs getting everywhere...

Desert Wanderer said...

Good one, RR. How about Christmas tree vertical dash?

REReader said...

DW--how about the balance head?

REReader said...

(Also... like! :))

Desert Wanderer said...

" Stopping two muddy furballs getting everywhere...".

Don't you guys have practice with the dogs?

John H. D. Watson said...

I thought he might be referring to Sherlock...

REReader said...

Hey, Sherlock had a haircut!

Desert Wanderer said...

Then who would be the second? You?

John H. D. Watson said...

Maybe...on certain occasions... More likely than Mycroft!

Greg Lestrade said...

We don't stop the dogs getting everywhere - they just have us well trained to clean up after them.

Sherlock is slightly more manageable. And that's not mud on John, it's chocolate ice cream.

Desert Wanderr said...

Slightly more fun to clean then. Requires a more...personal touch, no?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah.

He squirms as much as the dogs and Sherlock though...

John H. D. Watson said...

And whose fault is that?

Greg Lestrade said...

Who is the one so often responsible for these things he even has a tag saying so?

John H. D. Watson said...

That's just you and your tag's opinion. You have no proof.

Greg Lestrade said...

I was going to say 'officer of the law. Trustworthy in such matters'...but not so much right now, huh?

Everyone here knows it's all your fault, anyway.

It was definitely you who suggested ice cream last night. Down in black and white.

John H. D. Watson said...

I am guilty of enticing you to ice cream, that much is true.

Greg Lestrade said...

You're guilty of enticing me full stop.

I'm so glad I met you when we were both single.

John H. D. Watson said...

So am I. So very glad.

I do enjoy enticing you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Can't say I'm entirely against being enticed.

So...shall I think about painting the hallway tomorrow? You working all week - well, apart from the Big Day when Johnny gets his first big bike licence :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Mmhmm. We should go for a ride after the test, if you're not back at work.

Greg Lestrade said...

You mean... you should take me for a ride? :)

I can call up and put you on the insurance. Then you can use the bike whenever you want.

John H. D. Watson said...

Well...no guarantee I'll pass. But either way, it would be nice.

Anonymous said...

Of course you'll pass John :-)

The added incentive of borrowing Lestrade's bike is all you need!

Anony

Desert Wanderer said...

" Everyone here knows it's all your fault, anyway."

I know a couple of polls that say otherwise...

Greg Lestrade said...

I think you'll find those polls relate to guilt and innocence...not where fault lies.

I can assure you, around here, if I'm guilty, it's John's fault.

Elsewhere...not so much. But here, definitely.

Desert Wanderer said...

I think you'll find you.have the higher percentage of innuendo-laden comments. And following the maxim that thought matches deed...

But I would believe that Doc is the less vocal of you two when it comes to shenanigans. A silent partner, if you will.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ah. That I may have to admit to. Because whilst most things are his fault, sometimes they're his fault because he's so sweet and innocent... (sometimes.)

As far as shenanigans go...I couldn't possibly say. Or I couldn't without getting a grade 1 or 2 glare from my beloved, anyway.

REReader said...

So what color are you thinking of for the hallway?

Greg Lestrade said...

No one has suggested anything yet.

I need to go for a run tomorrow, then maybe I'll pin Mrs Hudson down, see what she thinks.

(Not literally, Mrs H. Don't get excited.)

REReader said...

A run sounds good.

Since hallways are often dark, so a yellow, maybe? (Doesn't have to be the deep gold color Sherlock liked--there are lots of yellows!)

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm not sure I'm too keen on pale yellows. Not that it's up to me. It's Mrs Hudson's house, technically.

REReader said...

Well, you (plural) are the ones that have to look at it, not me! Any light color is good in a dark space, unless you are going for the cave look. (I think that's better for dens and bedrooms than hallways, but I know some decorators disagree.) How'd you think Mrs Hudson would feel about a spring green?

Greg Lestrade said...

No idea. At the moment it's an assortment of wallpapers, so there'd be a long way to go before choosing colours.

Desert Wanderer said...

Mycroft, I just got to see that video properly, and it's gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

REReader said...

If it's a melange of wallpaper patterns, 1) you have quite a job ahead of you stripping them, and 2) ANY color will be a major improvement!

Desert Wanderer said...

'salright, RR. I'm sure Lestrade has lots of practice stripping things and isn't afraid to get a little messy.

Greg Lestrade said...

All true, DW.

Not used to Mrs Hudson watching and offering me a cup of tea right in the middle of it though...

REReader said...

Don't do that while I'm drinking tea!!!

John H. D. Watson said...

Not used to Mrs Hudson watching and offering me a cup of tea right in the middle of it though...

Getting a bit used to it though.

because he's so sweet and innocent

...I'm not going to get anywhere denying this, am I?

REReader said...

Play it up, John. I do. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Speak for yourself!

And no. I mean, I know you - I know you're not entirely innocent. You just do a good job of appearing to be :)

AftSO said...

L, that was a pretty good "what, I mean this completely innocently!" moment you had a few comments ago. You're pretty good at the appearing innocent, yourself, or at least riding in DW's wake.

RR, your response made me laugh out loud.

Mrs H, I don't know how on earth you manage to deal with all of this innuendo and general temptation.

H. Savinien said...

I still voted both of you guilty. ^_^ It makes life fun, doesn't it? I'm good at playing innocent too, until people get to know me and realize that I know exactly how much of what I say is actually sarcasm and innuendo.

Maybe you can get Sherlock to help you find a nice bucket of striped paint?

Desert Wanderer said...

They make striped paint?! Is that like when the peanut butter and jelly are in the same jar?

Small Hobbit said...

Yes, apprentices are often sent to the stores to collect a long stand and a pot of striped paint.

Happy Monday everyone, hope you all have a good week, especially good wishes for the Doc on his test and that you get some good news this week, L.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers SH.

Just dropped everyone off. Now going back home to change and go for a long run.

Anon Without A Name said...

Ooh, you could go for some Nectar Jewels. Maybe a little Velvet Touch? Or, if Mrs H prefers something au naturel in her hallway, you could go for a nice Nude Glow.

Desert Wanderer said...

Ah, SH. It's like getting a reel of flight line, or head light fluid. Nice. :)

REReader said...

Have a good run, L.

What are you doing awake, DW? (Yes, I know, but I asked first!)

Desert Wanderer said...

Couldn't tell you, RR. Beautiful sunrise, though, no?

I will refrain from making comments about accusatory statements made by culinary instruments regarding determination of the precise frequency of reflected light caused by application of a pigment of a particular hue to said instruments.

REReader said...

I wouldn't know about sunrises, the buildings block any such thing.

I don't know why I woke up exactly, but I'm up now because my UPS has been making not-quite-going off noises. (UPS being uninterruptible power source, which means something's wrong with the power lines. Again.)

Decided there was no case to answer for me. Don't know if they'll charge him or not, given he's being done for murder anyway.

Evidence showed he made no attempt to stop before hitting my car, witnesses on his side had wild variations in their evidence, whereas those supporting me were all in agreement. So they decided I had given him chance to stop, and he hadn't. Plus he endangered his son's life by driving without him in a seatbelt.

So, yeah, it'll go on my file, but no further action, can start work tomorrow. But I'm bringing paperwork home now.

I know. They had a hard time establishing if I really had given him opportunity to avoid hitting me.

And yeah, I'll be out of here in a bit, should be in time to walk to the school with you.

Thanks everyone - your optimism and support has really kept me going. Especially you, John.

John H. D. Watson said...

I know, and I know they have to be thorough in these things because not everyone is...well, you. But it still makes me want to go down there and give them a piece of my mind. (I won't, don't worry, I'm just glad it's all right now.)

Excellent. Wait till he's outside to tell him, or we may end up having to peel him off the ceiling.

Yes, how is Mycroft? (Well, happy, obviously, but otherwise?)

Cranky - The little boy is still in hospital, but they think he'll make a good recovery, yeah. Only time will tell, really. I imagine his mum is having a pretty hard time, given her husband is on remand and one of her kids is in hospital.

Fault? Fault? It's brilliant, and I am proud to have been a conduit for the inpiration!

Greg Lestrade said...

REReader said...

Also, it reminded me of an article I read in Smithsonian magazine on Saturday that I think Sherlock might find interesting: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/The-Secret-Life-of-Bees.html?c=y&page=1

It's about a biologist who studies bees and thinks that the way bee swarms make decisions tell us something about the way the human brains and human groups make decisions.

Greg Lestrade said...

DW - I've finished it, rather putting words into Danger's mouth:

Boys in soft hoodies and pink boxer shorts,
Holidays on Greek beaches and desolate forts,
Silver haired DIs with shiny nipple rings,
These are a few of Danger's fav'rite things.

When the dogs bite,
When the bee stings,
When I'm feeling sad,
I simply remember his favourite things
And I don't feel so bad...

;)

mazarin said...

Wow, DW, you're just brilliant. I bow, seriously, to your superior talent.

What kind of tarragon, L, are you thinking of? A creamy tarragon sauce? (Sorry to always be on about food, I really love cooking and am interested in new things to try. I tried chicken in tarragon sauce once and the poached chicken was wicked horrible. More experience = better results, maybe, these days.)

(Psst, Sherlock, next time don't speak in the second person! Say "I want pizza." Like an actor!)

*whistles and walks away*

Greg Lestrade said...

Maz - yeah, bit of onion in butter, some mustard, chicken cooked off in butter, bit of wine, cream and cheese in the sauce. And of course, tarragon.

I can't really give you a recipe, because it's a bit made up.

Desert Wanderer said...

Lol, Lestrade. Awesome.

Maz, I'm glad you know proper questions to ask about coooking. I didn't even know there were different kinds of tarragon!

Greg Lestrade said...

AH, well, if we're going on types of tarragon, rather than general recipe - then you always want to go French, really. And fresh, I think. Although dried herbs are very useful.

mazarin said...

There aren't different kinds of tarragon, DW, I was being inelegant in asking what sort of recipe L was considering! Sauce, roasted, etc. I've done both, and was curious.

Thanks for the idea, L. The husband, however, loathes mustard, so I never get to use it, ever, in anything. *pout*

Greg Lestrade said...

Maz - you can get Russian tarragon. But it's a rough flavour. Pretty much only used for flavouring alcohol/drinks, when you just dump it in and leave it. Not much good for cooking - doesn't taste of anything, if it's not left for ages.

And you don't need the mustard! You could leave it out. You can leave the wine out, too, if it comes to it. But I'd rather not :) You want roughly half and half wine and cream, if you do use it.

Cranky Bookwyrm said...

DW, I am completely impressed. I suck at rhyme and meter and find people who can use it talented.

Anon Without A Name said...

Thanks Nameless. It was certainly a relief.

I can't pretend I'm over the moon that it'll stay on my file, but...well, it's not like it'll really matter.

REReader said...

Just what does "stay on my file" mean, L?

Small Hobbit said...

DW and L - great lyrics. Perhaps you could write the UK Eurovision entry.

Sherlock said...

Lestrade says it was like my book at school, when Mrs T writes down things I'm not allowed to do and then if she thinks I'm bad then she can check it and see if I've done the same thing before and if I have I'm in more trouble, except it isn't quite like that, and it's silly because now they've said he didn't even do anything wrong so it shouldn't go in the book anyway.

REReader said...

Thank you, Sherlock. I have to agree, the way you put it it sounds a bit silly.

Did you find the bee article interesting? Or was dinner more interesting? :)

Anonymous said...

Thankyou for the explanation Sherlock and you're right it doesn't sound very fair!

Anony

Jaws said...

L - you'd be surprised how much I get that :P

And the dinner sounds lovely, I can't wait to see your recipe book "Things and Stuff", isn't that right?

Greg Lestrade said...

SH - I couldn't believe it - Engelbert Humperdinck! Who'd have thought... still, can't do any worse than we usually do, right?

Sherlock's explanation is... slightly simplified. Just because I didn't do anything wrong in the eyes of the law doesn't exactly mean it was right, either. But like I said, it makes little difference. It's not like I'd be going for promotion anyway.

RR - he does want a swarm of bees.

REReader said...

Sherlock's explanation is... slightly simplified.

I assumed rather. You okay with that? (Aside from the practical aspects.)

Sorry about inciting bee-swarm-envy. :) But it's a very interesting theory!

I'll never understand what's wrong with a policeman stopping a criminal anyway they need to but I guess now's not really the time to worry about that now's the time to celebrate going back to work tomorrow (strange how not being allowed to work for a bit can suddenly make you celebrate working!)

Greg - I'm so happy to hear that everything's been cleared up and you can go back to work! (It's good to know that the little boy will probably be fine as well.) It's...a little worrying that this will go on your file, but I suppose it can't be helped.

Now, back to the cooking and song-writing! (Is Sherlock still bouncing around somewhere in the vicinity of the ceiling?) :D

~A from NW

Greg Lestrade said...

Am I okay with the result? Yeah. I should have called in India 99 and let him go, put out an APB, let uniform and traffic do the work. But when you've got someone you've been after for a while, who's intimidating your witnesses, and you're worried the case is going to collapse before it starts... I acted without thinking through the consequences. Or at least, I didn't think he'd ram my car.

So I do wish I hadn't done it, but hindsight is 20/20.

Greg Lestrade said...

...did that make any sense? The job's taken over my brain already.

REReader said...

Yes, that made sense. Okay.

(Although, driving at that speed, with a unsecured child in the car, into regular traffic--it could have been a lot worse. Some possible outcomes of you acting differently are pretty horrific, and there's really no way to know what would have happened.)

Anonymous said...

Time to stop thinking about it now Lestrade, you're one step away from once again saying it was all you fault and it wasn't and you've no case to answer so it certainly wasn't.

As you say hindsight is 20/20 but in your line of work we all rely on you acting on your very good instincts, and you do it so well. :-)

Hope the files are making interesting reading :-)

Anony

Anon Without A Name said...

Lestrade - yeah, I get why you're not happy that it's on your file. I also get why it is. Good outcome, though, and tbh I'd rather have a police force that investigates its own thoroughly than one that doesn't (if that's not a crass thing to say right now). The system worked :-)

I reckon that whoever chooses the Eurovision singer and song just wants to make sure we don't have the nause of hosting it ever again. I reckon Ireland have the same idea :-p

Anonymous said...

Greg - It made perfect sense to me. The paperwork has really kicked you back into gear, hmm?

You made the best instant judgement you could at that time. You couldn't have known that your suspect was desperate enough to ram your car. For sure, you couldn't have possibly known that that sorry excuse for a parent had his son in the backseat, unsecured.

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - the theory is that if we don't chase, they don't run, and everything stays a lot calmer. Not always a sound theory, but that's how it's supposed to work. And the chopper can watch from on high - if it's available.

Anony - half of the paperwork is my team wanting holiday :)

Nameless - not at all crass.

Anonymous said...

Make sure you get your holiday booked before you approve theirs, there have to be some advantages to being the boss ;-)

Anony

REReader said...

L - Well, it's a theory, and I imagine it's true most of the time, which is all one can go by when making rules/policy. "Not always a sound theory" "if it's available"--and no way to know how it would actually have turned out otherwise. You were there, with your very good judgment, and a suspect already running before you acted. So they mark it down as "not exactly right", which is going by the policy, but that doesn't mean following the policy in this case would have been better, and it might have been worse.

(In case you start second and third guessing yourself.)

And don't forget to write in your own holiday, which you definitely need!

Desert Wanderer said...

" half of the paperwork is my team wanting holiday :)"

Aww that's so nice. They expected you to come back! After all, if I was sure my boss was in the wrong and going to be replaced, I would have just held on to the paperwork, or not put it in at all until I had a good idea what the new guy was like. Have you gotten to talk to them much yet?

Greg Lestrade said...

I did write it that way to make clear it's only a theory.

Greg - Theory v. Practice is a debate that started long before we were around and will continue long after we're all gone. I also second RR's comment; you haven't exactly been on holidays and you could use one.

Well, I suppose you also have more time to choose the hallway colors now... :)

Re Eurovision: well, we've had "nul points" before, so we can't do any worse than that.

Sounds as if the outcome is about the best you could have hoped for, all things considered. Not perfect, but then we don't live in a perfect world.

Maybe you should consider getting an early night ;)

You can't seriously be thinking of the last week as holiday!! You, John and the boys need the holiday you've been talking about to recover from all this.

Op Yetna??

I did write it that way to make clear it's only a theory.

You did, and I was just trying to agree/stress that. Sorry I wasn't clearer.

And after all the time I've just had off,

...And you equate that with a HOLIDAY?

I'll leave that to the medical professional. Doc, would you consider that "time off" in any way comparable to a holiday?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not as such, but I'm sure he'll do what he feels he needs to do.

REReader said...

Oh, I'm sure he will.

If Google hasn't led me astray, Operation Yetna looks to be a necessary but very boring systematic review of cold cases to see if they can be solved.

Greg - ...Will you (eventually) get said DS back from Op Yetna?

I hope you sleep very well tonight. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Do I equate it with a holiday? Not really. Do I think it's a lot more time off than most of my team have had in the past few months? Yes.

Ria - Yeah, a systematic unsolved murder case review.

REReader said...

Time off is supposed to let you de-stress. I don't think this qualified.

But, as John said, you'll do what you feel you need to do, L.

And I do second AfNW wish for some good sleep tonight and going forward.

Well, its clear what the course of action is. Send out an ACB (All Crims Bulletin) informing them that all police officers will be on holiday beginning the week after the Olympics and kindly asking them to consider moving their potential operations to a later date, as a bit of a good sportsmanlike gesture. Clearly, the crims, being imbued with the same public spiritedness as their opponents, won't be able to resist such a gentlemanly/last-like offer, and peace will reign long enough for the Yard to meet for rousing game of Canasta in Majorca.

Then, with the Yard rested and raring to go, the game will be afoot again.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah, that'd be nice, DW.

And in answer to your earlier question, I got to talk to a few people today - a few were out in court. Sentencing for that case we had a result on at the end of last week (which went well).

Yeah, it is nice that they still piled all their crap on my desk, just waiting for me to return. They either had a lot of faith I'd be back, or wanted the new DI to get a welcome they wouldn't forget ;)

DW - Why a card game off the coast of Spain? (Is this a movie reference flying over my head?)

Your problem Greg is you're far too nice to everyone but yourself.

Feeling guilty about going on holiday wouldn't serve much purpose anyway would it I guess, just make sure you book something in for when you can. Looking forward to holidays is almost as good as going on them :-)

It does suck for you, L, but I can see where you're coming from on the vacation thing. A week not working is a week not working, regardless of the reason. And if the Yard is as full of gossipy busybodies as your average workplace, I can see there being some resentment if you took time off in addition to your "time off" (which wouldn't count in a perfect world, but there you are). Still and all, I hope you can get at least a couple days to spend with John and the boys sometime in the near future.

Good luck making your decision.

Greg Lestrade said...

Anony - not everyone ;)

You're right, it wouldn't. And all this organising-holiday-around-school thing is new to me! I'll leave the organising to Mycroft - he's a natural.

I still think John and the boys need to go somewhere lovely in the summer though - it's a long time to have off and just stick around London. Of course, John's too nice too, so is less sure.

AfNW, no reference, I'm afraid. Just what came to mind. No idea why my brain is odd like that.

The niceness level in your house must be off the scale ;-)

Book a holiday for you all when you can get time and then it will be easier to persuade John to take some time just him and the boys without feeling guilty about it.

DW - Then I love your odd brain. =)

Anony - Between you and me, "in more ways than one." *coughs* *looks innocent*

Greg - I suggest you cave and book a day or two off in the next three months. Something to look forward to as you dive back into work. (Plus, there is a distinct possibility that the Holmesmother might get involved...or Sally.) =)

I'm so glad everything worked out, if not perfectly, at least acceptably. I'm glad you're getting back into the swing of things, DI Lestrade, and that the boy will be safe.

Have fun with the holiday requests. I dunno if I'd mentioned, but I was living in Vancouver last year for grad school and the crowds were absolutely incredible. Many of my friends took off for the suburbs if they had anyone they could stay with. I lived in an apartment building right near the Olympic Village, but one of my classmates was unlucky enough to live in a building inside the security cordon. He had to show proof of residence and his passport to get to and from his apartment every day. Traffic and public transport were a nightmare. They'd called in police, both metro and RCMP, from all over the country. It was cool, but going about your daily routine became a pain in the rear.

You're doing well RR you really are :-)

Before this ticks past 200 and everything stops I wanted to wish you good luck for tomorrow L. Try not to enjoy work too much ;)

I've put a new post up, in case you lot go mad commenting tomorrow when I'm too busy to update.

I really, really think it's worth looking at...definitely.

So, I've finally gotten around to read this and I'm glad you're back at the wheel.

Godspeed, Lestrade! :-)
