eine kleine newtmusik

This post isn't about me at all... I asked the boys what they'd like to post, and Sherlock said newts, Mycroft said this:

Which is a wonderful bit of music, and quite possibly more the type of thing he'll play on guitar.

On to the aquatic life:

I told him he could pick one picture. There was a huge debate about how a video was way more than a picture, and then he claimed to be absolutely unable to choose between big-foot newt and two-newts. And John took his side, so there you go. All the newts fit to print.

We had a lovely relaxing day today. And I did indeed give Sherlock a long ride on my shoulders. But not over Grand National fences.

I'm with Sherlock on the photos verses video thing but then I've been waiting to see his newt picture ever since he said he'd got some :-)

Great pictures Sherlock thanks for sharing :-)

The image of you trying to clear fences with Sherlock on your shoulders is a pretty funny one Greg whether it actually happened or not ;-)

This is my favourite subject line so far. Your poll is lacking in salamanders though.

Small Hobbit said...

Great choice of music, Mycroft.

Trying and failing to find a suitable Mozartian reply, apart from The Magic Newt. It's probably time I got some sleep.

Greg Lestrade said...

I was trying to limit it to creatures which might move into Sherlock's pond. Although with him, salamanders shouldn't be discounted, I suppose.

pandabob said...

should it not include Sherlock's as well then Greg? I'm sure he'd move in given half a chance just so he didn't miss anything with the tadpoles ;-)

Desert Wanderer said...

I agree with Sherlock (about the pictures), with Doc (about the subject line), and with Mycroft (about the music). Apparently I have no original thoughts. Your poll is also missing turtles, which Doc's video proves aren't outside the realm of possibility.

(also, you never answered about your silks...)

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - true. The tadpoles are loking big and fat now.

DW - my silks, of course, are black with white stripes in the pattern of a badger. What else?

Greg Lestrade said...

And I only hadn't answered because I pretty much posted this and fell asleep on the sofa! John was incredibly kind and left me to it.

Desert Wanderer said...

On the sofa, or on John? ;)

Sounds like a good day was had by all.

pandabob said...

Are they looking good enough to eat yet? ;-)

I love the idea of badger stripes, very sexy!!

sleep, go get lots more Greg you need it after the week you've had :-)

Very nice, DW.

I studied marine invertebrates for a while. One bloke on the course found leeches everywhere we went looking, even the places where they should have been dead from the wrong kind of water. We decided he emitted leech pheromones. That's why I voted Leeches

Lancs. Anon

John H. D. Watson said...

When you say he found leeches, do you mean in the water, or were they stuck to him?

Anonymous said...

Once or twice stuck to him, mostly just in nets or tanks when we were sampling. They drop off when they're full!

Lancs. Anon

John H. D. Watson said...

Yes, but until they're full you have leeches on you! Ha, glad his leech pheromones weren't too powerful.

Anonymous said...

You know, now you mention it I seem to recall that we found it funnier than he did, wonder why that was? Problem was we usually didn't have alcohol to sedate the (literally) bloody things and cigarette ends (a la jungle warfare films) actually don't work, the leeches tend to leave bits behind - not good!

Lancs. Anon

pandabob said...

Seriously stuck to him!! that is horrid Lancs Anon

Anonymous said...

We suffered for our education, or at least he did, as I recall the rest of us laughed quite a lot. Kids can be cruel you know!

Lancs. Anon

pandabob said...

laughing at people having their blood stolen is just nasty ;-) I like leeches although I wouldn't want to meet one in person!!

Anonymous said...

I think they use them medically again these days, especially when doing reattachments of body parts. As I understand it, it's relatively easy to reattach arteries, but veins are more difficult, so if for instance you were reattaching a hand you would get a build up of blood that wasn't getting taken away by the smaller veins. So they stick some leeches on to drain the excess blood so that the reattached hand doesn't swell too much which can cause it's own problems.

Lancs. Anon

pandabob said...

note to self. don't cut off hand ;-) medicine is a wonderful thing though and I guess the old treatments may be the best :-)

Bronwyn said...

That was great, Mycroft! I love really good guitar. I've got a couple for you for . . . inspiration? For fun? Yeah, mostly fun.

The first one is Hanuman by Rodrigo y Gabriela.

The second is Rhett Butler playing Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. He's got the oddest technique, but is astonishing.

Have fun!

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't think I mind leeches, although I didn't vote for them.

Desert Wanderer said...

So, what did you vote for, then?

John H. D. Watson said...

I've had to change mine to toads. I can't believe they're behind leeches.

Greg Lestrade said...

It had to be newts, DW. Especially the boys with their frilly crests.

Desert Wanderer said...

Damn it, Lestrade. This is all your fault. (Not that I'm procrastinating on these papers, not at all).

To "It Had to be You" (Frank Sinatra)

It had to be newts, it had to be newts
I wandered around, and finally found
The amphibians who
Could live in my lake,
And could give a nice break
And even be there, next to my chair
Much nicer than snakes

Other critters I've seen,
Crocs are quite mean
Toads are just cross,
Leeches cause blood loss
But they wouldn't do
For no creature else, could make me smile
With crests and tail, newts do it in style
It had to be newts, wonderful newts
It had to be newts

Small Hobbit said...

DW - that is brilliant. We are going to include this on the Badgers' debut album aren't we?

Desert Wanderer said...

It's not the whole song, SH, so I don't think it counts.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's brilliant, DW :)

pandabob said...

Mycroft I want to apologise for appearing to ignore your video in favour of Sherlock's photos. I wasn’t allowed to watch it last night (which is a depressing story and not a good excuse, sorry) but it is really nice to hear the music you like and if you are able to play anywhere near that well then I am very, very impressed, I’m impressed if you can play a tune at all really :-)

DW Like the song :-) you really have a talent for it.

I hope everyone's had a good day with lots of fun and adventure :-)

Anonybob

Greg Lestrade said...

I've had a lovely day. Hope you have too, AnonyBob.

pandabob said...

I can’t say it’s been great but it’s decidedly better now I’m free to do as I please ;-) Glad you’ve had a lovely day :-)

Very quietly, so he might not hear me ;-) I’m going to say, I hope Sherlock is all sorted for school tomorrow :-)

Desert Wanderer said...

Rough weekend, Anonybob?

pandabob said...

Yes DW a rough weekend. There have been some nice bits but not a weekend I'd like to live through again ;-)

Anonybob

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry to hear that AnonyBob. You know where we are if you need to talk/vent/whatever.

pandabob said...

It would be seriously tactless to vent to you about what's been my problem this weekend Greg so I don't think that's a good idea ;-) the music video cheered me up though so thanks for providing that :-)

Hope you have a fun evening and it's not too difficult getting Sherlock to go to bed, my school child is still shouting 'I don't want to go to school tomorrow, it's not fair' and she went to bed over an hour ago!!

Anonybob

Desert Wanderer said...

Awww. :( Sorry to hear that.
Anything we can do?

(Here, have a snail!family: http://tinyurl.com/8865vxx and some otters: http://www.beautiful-animals.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Baby-Otters-5.jpg)

Greg Lestrade said...

Tactless really wouldn't bother me! I promise. And my phone insists tactless isn't a word, and changed that to 'pantless'.

Sherlock is not happy, but John has promised to talk to Mrs T about someone coming in to talk about pondlife again, which cheered him up a little.

Rider said...

changed that to 'pantless'.

I am not sure if I should feel vindicated or worried that I appear to share a mind with Lestrade's phone.

pandabob said...

DW thanks for the pics, cute things make me smile :-)

your phone is amazing Greg it can change words into things that make people smile all by itself ;-) I of course am reading pantless in the double pantless kind of a way ;-)

I've been staying with my mother and father for the weekend so discussion would be tactless (not pantless) and depressing!!

sorry Sherlock's not happy but I guess it is unfair when Mycroft's still on holidays! ;-)

Anonybob

Sherlock said...

It is unfair! And bedtime is unfair too because no one else goes to bed when I do and misses out on everything.

pandabob said...

Sherlock my dear you have a very late bedtime compared to some! my little one has been in bed 2 hours already and she's not that much younger than you, although she is probably more bad tempered if she doesn't get enough sleep than you are ;-) I used to think school was unfair too but education is important and who would want to miss out on watching the tadpoles grow into frogs?

Try to sleep well Sherlock and to enjoy school in the morning :-) (you don't miss much but tired people rambling about rubbish you know ;-) )

Small Hobbit said...

Rider - knowing the way L's phone thinks I should be extremely worried that you both think the same way.

Although since as soon as I read L's comment about pantless I immediately thought "but that's Rider's line" I don't think I'm that far off either.

Sorry to hear you've had a bad weekend anonybob.

DW - have you got your papers written yet? Or are baby otters and snail families continuing to distract you?

Desert Wanderer said...

I thought the same thing about Rider's line. Great minds, and all that.

My current paper's on "Why the US shouldn't keep to the Geneva Convention against non-signatory, non-state actors" as part of a debate. It's making me sick to write, and is slow going. I have much more respect for what you went through this week, Lestrade, since you did it with much less whining and complaining than I'm managing to.

Baby otters and snail families all the way, please.

John H. D. Watson said...

That does sound...fairly painful.

Just running in to say hey to everyone!

I've spent the whole day (with my mom) putting away all the Passover dishes and pots and flatware and oven racks and stove top and, well, everything, and pulling out all the regular dishes and pots and flatware and so forth. It is a huge job, because we take a couple of weeks to switch from regular to Passover, and ONE DAY to switch back and I am BEAT! (Because everyone has to go back to work, and one day is all we get--at least this year it's a whole day, since it's Sunday, and not just one night, which is what we usually have.)

I hope to catch up fully, but meanwhile... Mycroft, that is wonderful--I love Spanish guitar and this Albeniz piece is one that was transcribed to guitar beautifully.

Sherlock, those newt photos are great! I love the Big Foot one the most because it reminded me how funny they feel walking on your hand or arm. :)

And yes, Sherlock, I can't imagine it feels anything but unfair when you have to go to bed first. I always hated it myself. Until I could go to bed whenever I wanted...that's when I started feeling it was unfair that I had to stay up late to get all my studying done when everyone else was able to go to sleep. :) (No, I'm not making it up to make a point. This was when I was in college and then graduate school, and I was quite grumpy about it at the time!)

DW, that song made me snort soda all over my keyboard! (It definitely does count. :))

Sorry you had an unpleasant weekend, Anony.

I hope everyone has a good Monday!

Desert Wanderer said...

Welcome back, RR. Hope your Passover was a good one.

In case anyone missed it, a new Anon posted a song about insomnia on Doc's blog. Since it's A. stunning and 2. something near to most of our hearts, I thought you'd like to know.

Greg Lestrade said...

DW - I complained internally. ;) and there's this week to go, plenty of time yet.

Desert Wanderer said...

You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. Hope this week's not too brutal.

Greg Lestrade said...

Very much doubt that. But thank you. Hope yours isn't either. And the paper is done soon.

pandabob said...

Glad you had a good weekend RR :-)

I hope today brings you some answers of the 'what you did well' variety even if they are joined by 'look what you should have done' Greg ;-)

I hope everyone has a good day or good night depending on the time of day/night it is with you :-)

Anonybob

Small Hobbit said...

Right, badgers, hope you all have a good week. Anyone else share my opinion that Monday mornings were designed for hibernating?

And L, not that it will help at all, but do try to concentrate on the parts you did well and not just the parts that were wrong. No-one expects you to get it all right first time. The idea is just that you learn from what you did. *This piece of advice offered freely to any badger who's in need of it. Feel free to quote it back to me at some point ;)*

Anon Without A Name said...

SH - completely agree about Monday mornings. *yawns*

DW - I hope your week improves, that paper sounds... challenging.

Lestrade - I hope today is informative, and not too painful, and that the rest of the week is tolerable.

Sherlock - First day back at school! Just think, no-one else will have seen the tadpoles and newts yet :-)

John, Mycroft - I hope you two have a fun and interesting week together.

Hope everyone else has a good week :-)

And just because it's nice to share the good news - it's my twentieth wedding anniversary today :-D I absolutely do not feel old enough to be having a twentieth wedding anniversary, but apparently I am :-p

Small Hobbit said...

Congratulations Nameless. How are you celebrating?

We'll get the champagne out for you tonight and assuming you're off somewhere we'll party in your absence. I'm sure L won't mind us taking over his blog for the occasion.

pandabob said...

Didn't L say this place was turning into a registry office a few weeks ago? 'Births marriages and deaths' surely wedding aniversaries come into that aswell ;-)

Hope you have a great day celebrating Nameless

Anonybob

Desert Wanderer said...

Congrats, Nameless. Hope you have twenty more!

Greg Lestrade said...

Wow, Nameless, congratulations, and thank you for sharing! It is definitely nice to share news like that.

I hope that John and I can share similar joy with you all one day, although not necessarily a wedding anniversary, at last an anniversary of our own. When they boys are all grown up, and we're both contentedly retired...

pandabob said...

In twenty years you'll still be slips of kids Greg, exploring the world and trying all those adventures John wants to give a go :-)

How's the course treating you today? hope it's going ok :-)

Hi guys, I'm still alive and finally have something nice to report: We went to a circus on Saturday and it was great :-) The final performance were trained bears. First they had one ride a bike (L, Rider, it was an old ČZ, no need to get excited) and it was "okay, good bear". Then another bear came and rode pillion with the first one. And as they were riding around and around, I realized I am really marked by the internet, because the only thought in my head at that moment was "Two bears riding a motorcycle - any argument is invalid".

I am not sure what is a conversion rate of a video to photographs but both newt-photos are awesome.

Mycroft, I have to admit I haven't seen your video yet. Will correct it this evening.

Nameless, congratulations! As L said, I also hope we'll get there with my husband.

John, sorry, I voted for newts - newts look like lizards to me and I like lizards.

Will never vote for leeches - too worm-like for me and make my phobias act up :-)

Also from all of the comments I remember asking DW about ice cream and hangover cure. I've never tried to cure hangover with ice cream but it makes my allergies stop. So I personally consider ice cream to be a little bit cure-all.

Oh, nearly forgot: Sherlock, have you played Portal yet?

REReader said...

Mazel tov, Nameless!

Hi, CR, yay for a circus and a highly appropriate act... :D

Hauling out my shovel to dig out my desk now. O_O

Mazarin said...

Oh, I love Big-footed Newt! I knew you were sure in what you saw, Sherlock. Excellent.

And that guitar piece just amazes me - how anyone can move their fingers like that so quickly and so precisely. I played piano for about 5 years and I never could get very fluent.

Congrats on your anniversary, Nameless! That's wonderful. Looking forward to mine - I've been promised a diamond wrap for my solitaire! :D 10 more years to go! (Wait a minute...I think that sounds like a bribe. WAS I JUST BRIBED TO GET TO AT LEAST 20? :D Kidding, kidding. I want to hit 50, at least.)

DW - good luck with your paper. The topic alone makes my blood run cold.

SH - can I get that advice in parental format, since you've already done all your child raising and I'm still fighting through mine? Though I'm absolutely positive right now that the boy must have gone deaf as he certainly doesn't hear me or his father! :D

REReader said...

FWIW, Maz--my mom always said that while his hearing was fine, my brother was born hard of listening. (And it really hasn't improved with age. :D)

(And what's wrong with .... well, call it a little incentive, as "bribe" doesn't have the right ring to it. "Incentive" sounds much better. :) Incentives are good!)

John H. D. Watson said...

Nameless - What wonderful news, congratulations to both of you! I hope L and I get there too. Can't imagine my life without him.

Maz - I think that sounds like a bribe.

Ha! If it was a bribe, it was poor thinking on his part. Definitely should've made you wait for the 50th at least. ;)

mazarin said...

No kidding! Though I have the distinct feeling that when we get to 20, I'll hear "well, I thought maybe you'd rather have a bigger diamond, so at 30 I'll get you a new solitaire instead" and so on, until by 50 I'll have been living on promises and maybe by then I'll get a nice new watch or something! :D No, I'm only joking. I'd take him forever without anything at all, ever again, as long as we have those 50 more years. Which sounds like a clumsy way to say it, but I think you guys know what I mean.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, definitely know what you mean.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, gosh, thanks everyone :-D It's weird, it feels like a much bigger deal when I tell people; for us I think it feels like another nice anniversary.

Um, oh, that makes it sound like we're complacent; we aren't. We really aren't. It's taken a lot of hard work, a fair bit of luck and more heartache than either of us would have liked to get here. It's just that... well, 20 sounds like a Big Round Number when I tell other people, and for us, I think, it's all felt a bit "it can't really be that long" for quite a few years.

All that ramble is to say - thank you, for your good wishes :-)

SH - we're going out for a meal tonight. A quiet celebration, but we both have to work tomorrow, and have both suffered hangovers at work often enough to want to avoid them if possible. I'd risk it anyway, but I have an eight-hour meeting tomorrow, and... just, no.

John, Lestrade - You've both already made the commitment to each other, you've weathered some difficult storms together, and you're just so damn good for each other, I can't imagine that you won't hit twenty years and many more together :-)

REReader said...

Do you know Greg I am so impressed with you right now you wouldn't believe. Faced with something I was so unsure about I'm sure I would have run away or tried to hide somewhere, especially if I had a possible out like you could probably have found, but you are such an inspiration. You've taken yourself through so many steps to get to here and I am really really impressed :-)

What a great role model you are :-)

Maz - the inability of boys (and girls) to hear what's being said to them continues for years. As does the ability to ignore any advice, as for example, "buying that car will be an expensive mistake". We've got past that one now, but are still on the "why do you think you need another motorbike?"

Now, whilst Nameless is out enjoying her meal (and yes 20 is just a number - so often it's what's happened in the past year that makes the anniversary special) shall I open the champagne?

Mycroft, as ever, I'm so impressed by your taste in the finer things, especially music. And especially especially nannies.
