18 April 2012

He walked up to me and really stole my heart.

I did promise.

Right, training is okay. Lots of work on 'real life' scenarios - situations which have really happened that we have to deal with. It's difficult, but interesting. It's still all just pretend, though. No one can know what they'll do if it happens for real. We're all feeling that.

Mainly lots of being in the wet today, surrounding premises, learning about safe ways to stop people, approach them, different types of weapons and some horribly realistic 'toys', that I don't understand the existance of at all.

Last night, however, was quite, quite, different.

That sneaky, sneaky doctor of mine said we were going out to dinner. And insisted he'd ride the bike, and I had to pillion.

When we got there I was a little surprised that, being a pub, they took our helmets and jackets etc. and spirited them away... but some places are good like that.

The pub was amazing. Gourmet food, lovely surroundings, some truly wonderful wine, which...we both drank. Because John insisted it would be okay, and my life these days I just thought someone would somehow rescue the bike or...I don't know. I didn't really think.

But, of course, we weren't going home at all, because Doctor Sneaky had booked us a room upstairs, where our helmets and jackets were neatly stored.

This room. This bath. Of course, it didn't look like that for very long. It got very...messy.

We had a bath - it was plenty big enough for two, and relaxed thoroughly with some excellent scotch, and then the rest of Doc's plan to lead me thoroughly astray and make a dirty stop out of me. It was brilliant - amazing. Fantastic. John Danger Watson is a God along men. And I definitely didn't want to get up this morning.

I'll leave it up to your imaginatioins about whether John took us clean underwear for this morning, or if we had a pantless ride home ;)

not at all jealous of you having such an amazing man in your life I swear ;-)

You really deserved a good time given the tough work you're doing at the minute so good on John for leading you into fun :-)

The course is nearly over so I guess its got to get quite real or it wouldn't be doing it's job would it?

You're a good man keeping your promise of love and course posting so I hope you're free to sleep now if you want :-)

I'm now not allowed to go to bed because Sherlock needs a story. And as I didn't tell him one last night, I'm lucky it's not two.

John may have to drag me out of Sherlock's room, because I'm sure I'll fall asleep on the bed.

pandabob said...

putting yourself to sleep with a bedtime story would be brilliant ;-)

Sherlock don't be mean Greg needs sleep you know!! (I know you're not mean really you're actually really lovely :-) )

Sherlock said...

Stories are his job! And he didn't tell me one yesterday, and it's not my bedtime for another six minutes and I gave him biscuits earlier.

pandabob said...

You're absolutely right Sherlock, bedtime stories are the most important job of the day. Makes sure you give him a nudge though so he doesn't fall asleep before the end ;-)

Small Hobbit said...

Ah, this is just really, really lovely.

Hope you get to bed soon and sleep well tonight.

And now I've read all about your excellent evening out I am going. Night badgers.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, my telling of the tale is slightly short and incoherent. Just like Sherlock's bedtime story is about to be.

Sherlock said...

John, Lestrade forgot one of the people in the story was dead already and even though I know who did it he didn't even get to the end and he's on my leg and really heavy you should come and take him away now.

REReader said...

But you had BISCUITS! Glittery ones, too!

That room looks lovely, and your night sounds amazing.

(If those "toys" are fake guns that look entirely realistic, they've been quite a problem in the US, despite being entirely illegal.)

pandabob said...

I told you to nudge him Sherlock ;-) glad you know who did it though.

Sleep well when you are released ;-)

Anonybob

REReader said...

...and my typing was apparently too slow. :D

I guess you'll have to make him retell tonight's story tomorrow, Sherlock!

Sherlock said...

I did nudge him but he still went to sleep and he doesn't have to retell it because I know who did it but John does need to come and get him because he takes up too much room.

pandabob said...

good luck with your escape Sherlock ;-)

REReader said...

Ah. I'm sure you'll discuss it with him in the morning.

John, are you awake?

Mycroft said...

I think John might be asleep too. I'll go and see.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm awake! Really. Right, off to fetch one DI and put him to bed.

REReader said...

That did the trick! Good job, Mycroft. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

And then I'll be along to see your light's off too, Mycroft. No 4am book club tonight, please.

REReader said...

...and to all a good night.

:)

Greg Lestrade said...

Mwale

hope you don't think I take up too much room, Doc. Cos you take up just the right amout.

did Sherlock expeirment on me when i was asleep?? is there a degu nesting in my hair or anyhitng?

John H. D. Watson said...

No experiements, no degus. The right amount of hair and limbs. I think you're all right. You take up a perfect amount of room, but to be fair our bed is a lot bigger than his.

pandabob said...

Oy you bed!! no napping and then being awake all night!!

Hope you sleep well Mycroft and you too John.

Greg Lestrade said...

going. John's being a nanny. hoping to get tucked in and maybe kiss goodnight.

John H. D. Watson said...

Put your phone down and close your eyes, and I'll even tell you a story.

Desert Wanderer said...

Mycroft, about Catch-22... Don't tell the Chief, but I started reading it a couple of years ago and found it too frustrating to finish. I haven't started it again yet as I know the basic idea and there are about 10 other books on the list in addition to the courses I'm taking now. I'll get there eventually (hopefully).

Mycroft said...

DW, I looked up the list, and the films as well. I haven't read any of the books, and I've only seen two of the films. Catch-22 still seems like an odd choice, even in the context of the others. I hope your courses are going well.

REReader said...

(It's okay, John--I double-checked, and it isn't 4:00 am yet! ;))

Is everything okay, Mycroft? Or is it just having switched around your sleep cycle?

Mycroft said...

I just had a bad dream. I'll go back to sleep in a minute.

REReader said...

If you want to talk--about the dream, or about something totally, utterly different, you've company. If not, I hope you have a dreamless rest of the night. (Well, either way I hope you have a dreamless rest of the night. :))

Desert Wanderer said...

I don't know where the rest of my comment went before. It was supposed to say:

Sounds like a perfect night, guys, and well done Doc. Glad to hear at least part of your days are going swimmingly, Lestrade. Not too much longer before you're done, and then hopefully you won't have to deal with it again. <3

Mycroft, I've seen all of the films except one, but haven't finished any of the books. Courses are going... Well, they're going. :)

REReader said...

Hey, DW! Sorry you're you're finding your courses rough going, if that's the right phrase--that you're not enjoying them, anyway.

I dunno how I missed your list, but I will go back and see if I can find it! (A link, I'm assuming.)

REReader said...

Ah, never mind--I searched out the list, DW, and aside from skimming through Catch-22, I haven't read any of the books and have seen only one of the movies--but I've covered the material in a number of each in my graduate work. I wonder if that would count? :)

pandabob said...

I hope you're fast asleep now mycroft. :-) Are you struggling with bad dreams or is it just random that two nights in a row you've been up instead of sound asleep?

The same things we all tell Greg and john apply to you you know. If we can be any help we are here to listen or to talk about something totally unrelated to take your mind off it ;-) I hope you're sound asleep now.

Anonybob

Greg Lestrade said...

He was sound asleep when I went to check on him a bit ago. Maybe he'll talk to John today if he thinks it'll help.

And you can always wake us if you want, Mycroft.

pandabob said...

Glad he's asleep Greg, I hope you had a reasonable night and feel a little less sleep deprived this morning :-) hope your day is ok not long till the course is over now!

Sherlock, John hope you both slept well and are facing the day with a smile :-) and I hope you enjoy your day with John mycroft whatever you get up to :-)

CzechReader said...

Achoo!

L, the room looks lovely. I absolutely refuse to comment on anything more, except for 'well done, John!' :-)

Hmm, looked up the list as well - from all the items on the list, the only thing I've read is the Catch-22. I've read the whole thing and I liked it when I read it the first time, but was unable to go back to it since.

I think it was because I've read a lot of Remarque (my favorites are All Quiet on the Western Front, The Road Back, Three Comrades, Arch of Triumph, Spark of Life and The Black Obelisk), then Simmel's It Can't Always Be Caviar (originally written for a women's magazine, with recipes - the protagonist is very charming ex-banker Thomas Lieven who loves to cook), there is also a Czech author who under the pseudonym of Robert Blank wrote a book about his own experience in concentration camps and what he saw, King Rat by James Clavell, Bridge over the River Kwai and many many others. Also I started to have severe health problems at the time, so I was nearly always high on meds of some kind. I think all this made the Catch-22 somehow sensible for me.

On the other hand, I've disliked Hemingway since page one of A Farewell to Arms...

Anon Without A Name said...

DW, Mycroft - I didn't realise the list was online until Mycroft mentioned it. I've only watched Apollo 13, but from what I understand of some of the others, there seems to be a theme of innovative perseveance in adversity, which... well, you can understand why that might be something the Chief would like Airmen to think about.

I'm quite impressed, TBH, that Catch-22 is on the list. It's all well and good having inspirational books, and books on strategic warfare, but I think it's a very good idea to include something a bit more challenging to the status quo, or a book designed to make people outside the "corporate" comfort zone.

John, Mycroft - any plans for day? Hope you had a uninterrupted sleep after posting here, Mycroft.

Lestrade - Hope the course continues to be bearable.

That room looks stunning, BTW :-)

Anon Without A Name said...

Oh, Mycroft, I forgot to say - Lestrade's right, you know, if you need to talk to someone, about anything, John really is the ideal person.

I think both John and Lestrade have spent much of the past eighteen months learning to share problems with each other, rather than trying to shut each other out of their problems; it's an excellent example they're setting for you (for all of us, really).

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless, thanks. I've been thinking a lot about the changes I've gone through since starting to share my life with John and the boys and all of you.

I'm slowly working on a post about it.

RR - the toy guns I'm talking about are toy plastic guns you can buy in the shops, for kids, which although close up are obviously fake and plastic, at distance, look plenty real enough, and which make decision making during an armed situation a million times harder for us.

Anonymous said...

That would be the bit that would worry me the most. I once took a highly realistic looking air pistol off a kid after having pupils come to me to tell me 'X has a gun in his bag, miss'. Given the kid it was and the fact that I'm stupid, I just went and told him I was going to search his bag.

Parents being funny things made a fuss about having to come in and collect it, not about the fact that he'd brought the thing in, some kids do have them!

Lancs. Anon

REReader said...

Yep, L, that's what I was talking about. In the US, by federal law, toy guns have to be marked with bright colors, and most states have laws against toy guns that "substantially duplicate" real guns--because at night, or at a distance, you need to be able to tell the difference. (Not that these laws are followed, mind you--you can buy pretty realistic toy guns almost anywhere, and the laws are made much fun of. Idiots.)

I hope everyone is having a good day!

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't feel like my sleep deprived post makes as much sense as I'd thought, having just read it, and definitely doesn't express just how God-Like John is in sufficient terms. He is, without doubt, the best bloke a person could ever have in their life. And I am exceedingly lucky.

pandabob said...

Greg my dear, there is no one here who doesn’t know just how wonderful John is and how lucky you feel to have him in your life or how wonderful you are and how lucky John feels to have you. Sleep deprivation or no sleep deprivation it is blatantly obvious that you two are the luckiest men on the planet because you believe yourself to be so :-)

Hope you’re not getting too wet today ;-)

Anyone else listen to much of the Titanic stuff? I've got the Minute-by-minute prog on the iPlayer.

pandabob said...

I've watched and listened to a few bits, it was such a horrible thing but it did wonders for safety so I guess the lives weren't lost in vain!

Greg Lestrade said...

It is horrible, but the sort of thing I find quite fascinating.

Although Sherlock has to go to bed, so I might pause it and get him settled, and he can listen to more if he wants to at the weekend.

pandabob said...

fascinating is the right word, it is strange how horrible things are generally the most fascinating.

Night night Sherlock sleep tight :-)

Sherlock said...

pandabob said...

the joy of technology Sherlock is that you can get the sleep you need AND get to listen to interesting things :-)

Sleep well

Greg Lestrade said...

He is going, little horror.

He better be, or he'll get scragged.

REReader said...

(It will still have happened 100 years ago at the weekend, after all... :D)

And you never said how you like your skull! Night night, Sherlock.

Greg Lestrade said...

I think he likes it quite a lot. He's taken it to bed.

REReader said...

More original (and more interesting) than a teddy bear, that's for sure! (I'm sure it's a tie with a Spider. :))

pandabob said...

seriously? minute by minute titanic followed by murder bedtime story and a skull to cuddle! Are you looking to get no sleep tonight due to random nightmares? ;-)

I love the idea of him cuddling a skull though that is so cute :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

He didn't get to the really sinky part of Titanic before bed. And I think Spider is definitely more cuddly than Skull.

John H. D. Watson said...

I just hope he doesn't lose any of the teeth in the sheets. We'll never find them.

pandabob said...

will the tooth fairy not take them if he does? ;-)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha, I'm surprised he didn't ask. But no, the tooth fairy has a real teeth only policy!

pandabob said...

I was sure as soon as Mycroft said the teeth came out that that would be in the planning ;-)

good policy though.

Greg Lestrade said...

the tooth fairy also takes the teeth away, so he'd only be able to try it once, and then his skull would be toothless.

Greg Lestrade said...

'Shipbuilding' is such a good song. (I have gone back to Titanic - Minute by minute.)

pandabob said...

not sure I've heard it but glad you like it :-)

The tooth fairy would return the teeth when it became apparent they weren't real but by then the money she paid for them would have been spent ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

The toothfairy wouldn't stand for it. S/he'd go on strike, maybe demand payment in ice cream.

Speaking of, DangerNanny, you should read this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/9118768/Ice-cream-as-addictive-as-drugs-says-new-study.html

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, still manages to irritate me though.

So, tomorrow is your last day, right?

pandabob said...

Greg Lestrade said...

Last day of the course, yeah. Just when I was getting used to being there.

No problem, AnonyBob. It's a very sad song, but beautiful all the same.

John H. D. Watson said...

Are you off for the weekend or do you need to go in to work at all?

Greg Lestrade said...

Off generally, but I do need to go in for an hour or so. Spent my lunchtime today on the phone to Sal. Sorry.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right, just checking.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm far too predictable, obviously.

John H. D. Watson said...

Well, you've been gone for two weeks! It's not surprising they need some input from you. I'm just glad tomorrow's the last day.

Greg Lestrade said...

me too.

And we really need to organise a holiday soon. At least get down to see Rach and Nicky, if not a proper getaway, before the summer hits us head on.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, that'd be nice. Mycroft's next weekend free is 11 May, is that too soon?

Greg Lestrade said...

Definitely not too soon. I'll give them a call.

Oh, and before I forget (randomly), those plush microbes are really cute. Of course, the cutest ones tend also to be the deadliest diseases, so...

Reading wise, I love Terry Pratchett. Greg, I think you would like the Night Watch series with Commander Vimes. It's like social commentary wrapped up with a very dark sense of humor and fantasty.

Work is going...well. I've hit a plateau where I know just enough to get by, but not enough to know what everything means. Also, I get to learn computer programming next! (Did I mention the last time I played with Dreamweaver was seven years ago and I was extremely impolite to the computer every ten minutes or so?) This should be fun...!

Miss you all! Hugs to those who need/want them!

;D

We should probably write these rules down somewhere...

Maybe Mrs T would let you copy her Sherlock rule book?

(I'm only joking, Sherlock!)

If time machines were ever going to be invented then they already have been and people are already traveling in time and changing things which is only leading to us being where we are isn't it?

If the past exists for us to travel back to then the future must exist for us to travel from don't you think?

Nice of you to be flexible there L.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - either's fine with me as well. Sounds perfect, actually.

Greg Lestrade said...

KHolly - well, whichever way around he finds it easier to peel grapes and feed them to me...

It's true that I'm surprisingly flexible, since he got his hands (and other parts) on me though. ;)

Just taken refuge in a garage from this torrential bloody downpour. My boxers are damp.

REReader said...

That sounds miserably uncomfortable. :(

Greg Lestrade said...

I presume you mean my wet pants, not my flexibility....

pandabob said...

Just in case you didn't think me mad already Greg I have to admit I drove round the block last night when I got home because the mileage on the car was 111.1 miles and I couldn't leave it like that!!
