A million shards of glass, That haunt me from my past

Well...so much to talk about.

Firstly, here's the place John took me away to:

It was lovely, so peaceful, lovely walks together, ending in cosy pubs. Wonderful views.

And here's part of Sherlock's birthday weekend - the climbing place we went to. It was great, they were so helpful. I think Mycroft is contemplating joining a club at University, so might go a few more times to get a feel for it.

And finally, the game!

It was great - lovely atmosphere. The crowds at Rugby are notoriously good natured. Even though about 90% of the crowd were All Black supporters, the biggest cheer of the night went up when Namibia scored a try.

The other day, when Japan beat the Boks, down in Brighton, the Bok supporters formed a guard of honour when the train arrived back to London, to allow the Blossom supporters to go through the barriers first - that shows how nice Rugby crowds are, compared to football crowds, where someone would probably have been stabbed and a huge fight would've broken out.

Anyway, all that just goes to show what an amazingly fortunate man I am, to have such wonderful people around me to share so much fun and love with every day. Which is something I'm not going to see so much of in the coming weeks...once I've handed over to Sal and Dimmo I'll be off to CP, with all the misery that involves. However, much like any serious crimes, the victory of getting a conviction and getting someone off the streets and where they can't harm anyone will be very very welcome. The team there are amazing. Dedicated officers who work their arses off doing a very very difficult job, day in day out, because they care so much.

Now, Sherlock wants bacon and avocado for lunch, and the degus need their weekly health check up and bath and to stop trying to burrow up my sleeve.

(And what does everyone think of the new Bond theme....I'm not a fan, I've got to say.)

What a lovely time must have been had by all!

My mother is helping to take care of my gerbils while I've been laid up, and she was leaning over the cage doing something and suddenly my more rambunctious gerbil hopped up into her sleeve and burrowed into her armpit!

At least they're not trying to nest in your hair. At the moment.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've explained to them there's no nesting in my hair until they've had their bath.

In retaliation Argon tried to dig through my keyboard.

I'm going to buy John this:

Small Hobbit said...

It's a good idea, but knowing how contrary cats can be, are you sure Maf will use the pet pouch bit?

Greg Lestrade said...

Well..the degus could, if she didn't? I'm just imagining John getting up to go to the toilet with Maf still attached...which is apparently kind of the point of the hoody.

REReader said...

I imagine Maf regally riding his head.

Greg Lestrade said...

But she'd squash his cute little ears!

REReader said...

I'm sure she'd be fine with that.

Joolz said...

I'm sure John would find it nice and cuddly but would Maf ever leave his head long enough to stay in it. ;)
Great pics, that lighthouse looks amazing. Yes it is such a shame that football crowds aren't as friendly as that, it would make it all so much better.

Lots of points scored today but no change at the top. The table is as follows:

Small Hobbit - 31
Lancs Anon - 28
Pandabob - 27
Greg, John, Joolz, Nameless - 26
Piplover - 24
Sherlock - 18
REReader - 15
KT - 11

The next game is on Tuesday.
Tonga v Namibia
Joolz 19-6, Small Hobbit 28-6, Lancs Anon 42-9, Greg 44-14, Sherlock 32-10, John 28-25, Nameless 29-12, Pandabob 15-22, Piplover 20-15, KT 40-35, REReader 15-22.

Good luck for that one. :)

Do excuse me as I gloat at my temporary amazingness!

Greg Lestrade said...

Any one else crazy enough to be awake and watching the majesty of an eclipse?

Becca said...

Oh, it was so beautiful. I crutched out to the driveway and leaned on a car multiple times.

Anonymous said...

We saw much of it - happily the fullest part & about 1/4 of the retreat before the clouds intervened. It was another special time in a great visit I'm having with my daughter. She was my 'difficult' teen so now I feel triply blessed that we get along. Did a half day's hike in the Rockies, some museums & a farmer's market, I've enjoyed cooking for her & her roommate & we happened upon the University's marching band holding a pep rally for the upcoming [American] football game that none of us watched. And I was able to spend some time with her boyfriend (of nearly two years).

So yeah. Some of us are truly fortunate.

Hope your work week goes well, L.

SH - you need to break in your glory whilst it lasts ;)

The moon was beautiful here, but very washed out by the city lights. Still sherlock enjoyed it, and hopefully Mycroft had a good view

Kestrel337 said...

It was amazing, and the perfect ending to our (belated) Mabon ritual and feast.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mycroft said the sixth formers were allowed to see it with their tutor. Other boys, I imagine, had to wake up and peer out of the windows... anyway, apart from a bunch of sleepy sixth formers in lessons today (and who can tell??), that all seems like a very good way to see it.

Sal is back in the country tomorrow. Not long 'til I wave goodbye to my office for a while.

Greg Lestrade said...

Happy birthday to the Met! Born on this day in 1829.

I watched the eclipse, it was beautiful. Went outside a few times and peered through the trees during the early part, used an upstairs window for a while once it cleared the trees, and went outside again for the transition into totality.

It's national coffee day today, too. I've drunk lots to celebrate.

Sal is back tomorrow!

Greg Lestrade said...

Maybe I should give up the job and set up a coffee stall in a little van in town in the mornings, and have the rest of the day free to ...do cuppings and just enjoy life ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Only if it has a spout on the front, I insist.

Greg Lestrade said...

you just love me for my frontal spout, eh?

John H. D. Watson said...

Everyone likes a good frontal spout. Especially one with coffee coming out of it.

Joolz said...

I'm sure it'll be lovely to have Sal back, just a shame you won't be seeing a lot of her. I'm sure she and Dimmo will keep the team going whilst you're keeping children safe - a hard but very important job. Do you actually start straight in tomorrow, Greg?

Let the gloating continue, SH ;) Here's the new table and you're still at the top.

Small Hobbit - 33
Lancs Anon - 30
Greg, Joolz, Nameless - 28
John, Pandabob - 27
Piplover - 25
Sherlock - 20
REReader - 15
KT - 12

No game tomorrow but two on Thursday so here are the predictions:
Wales v Fiji
Joolz 24-13, Small Hobbit 27-15, Lancs Anon 21-28, Greg 19-15, Sherlock 20-10, John 32-25, Nameless 21-16, Pandabob 45-18, Piplover 30-20, KT 12-15, REReader 25-18

Good luck everyone. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

i'm fairly sure the one nature provided me with has about 95% coffee coming out of it...

John H. D. Watson said...

I think you may be right...

Greg Lestrade said...

Hey, I'm on top of my husband for the first time!

(in the rugby)

Lucky you like coffee then, Dangermouse.

Greg Lestrade said...

Joolz - no, I'm on handover tomorrow and Thurs, then in with the new team out East after that.

At least I'll get to dodge Sal's holiday snaps ;)

Joolz said...

Good luck for that then. I'm thinking it may be a good job you're out of the office when Sal sees that last crack. ;)

Good to see a little competition with you & John jostling for prime position then. Coffee spouts to the ready. ;)

REReader said...

Backing up... "Any one else crazy enough to be awake and watching the majesty of an eclipse?" My sister and nieces and I tried--we were mostly outside anyway!--but it was too cloudy and we couldn't see anything. :(

Greg Lestrade said...

I think it was a bit less crazy your side of th pond though...we had to get up at half three!

REReader said...

Ouch! Here it was supposed to start around 9:00 pm, def. easier--or it would have been if it had been clearer.

Greg Lestrade said...

Just got a phonecall to say one of the guys I went through Hendon with has died. It's odd, isn't it, when you're told something like that - I haven't seen him for 5 years, probably, but still sad he's gone. Great officer, wonderful father and husband.

pandabob said...

That's sad Greg :-(

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah. Selfish, really, just makes you think about yourself, doesn't it, when someone you grew up with (at least, I grew up a lot at Hendon), goes and dies.

REReader said...

I'm sorry about your friend/classmate, L.

Anonymous said...

Sorry about your friend. It's sad, and the fact that as the years pass it happens more often doesn't make it seem right.

I'm thinking that the combination of coming off of holiday and being deprived of your special brand of self-amusement (who else is going to serenade the office with pop songs?) is going to make for a bumpy transition for Sally. Sure she'll take it in stride, though.

SH - I'm starting to think you might actually FOLLOW rugby on a regular basis!

-fA

Small Hobbit said...

fA - no more than some of the others on here - I may just be slightly more biased than others ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I've been teaching Dimmo some dance moves as well as handing over case files, Sal should be okay ;)

Anonymous said...

Sally, if it's not privileged info, I'm sure we'd all love a comparative review of Dimmock vs. Lestrade as deskside entertainers.

(If you're still off I hope you don't actually see this. The boss' blog is a poor use of holiday time, I'm thinking)

-fA

Becca said...

Greg, just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. i think it's especially tough when you've fallen out of touch with someone.

Desert Wanderer said...

Lestrade, does the Home Office have some sort of silver fox quota? Because the PC who gave us our anti-radicalisation training today could have given you a run for your money...

Greg Lestrade said...

DW - tell me where this PC is, because I need to ensure John never meets him...

Thanks for your all your kind words. Roy was a great man.

Tomorrow...I'm the new boy. I think I might have to tone back the singing though.

Desert Wanderer said...

I wouldn't worry--he's out here in Staffs.

Is that like the Eagles song "New Kid in Town"? That's my favorite!

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll be checking the post to ensure there's no transfer papers to be a custody doc in Staffs then!

That is a fine song. I'll probably be singing it tomorrow now...

Hope your training went well, and you can remember something beyond the good looks of the Constable. ;)

Desert Wanderer said...

It was as good training as could be expected, given the material. And, of course I can remember more than his looks. He had a nice voice, too. ;)

Are we to take Sally's silence on the Lestrade vs. Dimmock dancing front to mean she doesn't want to hurt her boss's feelings.

Greg Lestrade said...

She's not silent to me! Perhaps more sensible than putting her thoughts down in black and white though.

She claims that I'm older, but Dimmo is more grown up...but I know she'll miss me ;)

Anonymous said...

"more grown up" = less entertaining

That's a backhanded compliment, I'd say.

Joolz said...

Another close call today but still no perfect score - I predicted 24-13 and it was 23-13 so a good victory for those Welsh boys who are obviously intent on keeping SH on top. :) Plenty of movement for the rest of us in the table though with John now back on top of you again, Greg. ;)
The table stands like this:

Small Hobbit - 36
Joolz - 32
John, Lancs Anon, Nameless, Pandabob - 31
Greg - 30
Piplover - 27
Sherlock - 24
REReader - 17
KT - 12

Only one game tomorrow and the All Blacks are in action again so we have some more high predictions:
Joolz 32-9, Small Hobbit 36-3, Lancs Anon 52-11, Greg 66-12, Sherlock 32-6, John 65-9, Nameless 23-19, Pandabob 35-30, Piplover 30-15, KT 30-26, REReader 23-15.

Good luck everyone. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I was literally just on checking the scores and realising my darling husband was back on top where he likes it ;)

Becca said...

Is it time for another Lestallion column?

Joolz said...

Keeping your husband happy is certainly a good way to avoid transfers to the Midlands. ;)

Best of luck tomorrow, I'm sure your new team will be impressed even without the early song and dance. ;)

Small Hobbit said...

*Continues to bask in your general admiration*

However, since my ideal final would be Wales beating the All Blacks I think you can all see where this is going ;)

And nice to see the correct positioning has been restored in the Watson-Lestrade household :D

Greg Lestrade said...

I have been informed by Mycroft that the Lestallion columns are more 'AMAs"...anyway, yeah, i shall try to remember for the next post ;)

That's if this job doesn't put me off humans all together and I head off to live in a cave.

Anonymous said...

If you need to retreat to the cave, make exceptions for your special humans, yes? They'll make it a good place.

I think it's adorable when our young make the effort to try to bring us up-to-date on terms and practices. It reassures me that they care.

REReader said...

(And with that one word, fA, you have slightly horrified Mycroft. :D)

Anonymous said...

RR - The upcoming generation doesn't seem to know how to classify me if I don't slightly horrify, mortify or exasperate them periodically! Of all people, I'm sure Mycroft assigns chatty Internet strangers the appropriately little significance we are due . . .

REReader said...

That sounds sooooo familiar!

Kestrel337 said...

Exactly, fA.

Whenever hubster and I have managed to get an eye-roll, or a 'mom' or 'dad' spoken with no intonation whatsoever, we exchange a high five. Embarrassing them is required to be a card carrying member of the 'significant adults to teenagers' club.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mycroft rises above it all, i think.

Joolz said...

I hope your contemplation of cave living isn't an indication of a really bad first day on the job, Greg.

Points for everyone today as we all guessed New Zealand would win. The table is now as follows:

Small Hobbit - 38
Joolz - 34
John, Lancs Anon - 33
Greg, Nameless, Pandabob - 32

Lots of different combinations of predictions for tomorrow so it'll be interesting how that will affect the table. We shall see. Good luck everyone. :)

It was a tough day, helped immensely by a team of experienced, dedicated officers.

And in odd news...the NY Jets are over here to play...and have bought 350 toilet rolls with them. I never knew American Football players were so sensitive. Rugby players wipe their bums on barbed wire wrapped in stinging nettles ;)

Becca said...

As a New Yorker (are they a New York Team?) I'm sort of embarrassed for them.

Desert Wanderer said...

They're technically a New York team, but they're the posh, obnoxious team (and they play in Jersey anyway). The real New York team is the Giants--my guys, who are proper tough guys. It's like the difference between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets: the Yankees are the team for fakers and snobs while the Mets are the team for the regular people (and their children).

just glanced at the scoreline and my prediction for Jap vs Sam was a bit woeful, eh? Was hoping for something to cheer me up!

Small Hobbit said...

Japan seem to be a much better team than a lot of people gave them credit for.

Greg Lestrade said...

Definitely.

I've had to send John's dad a message to commiserate Scotland's loss...good son in law, me ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

Home in time for the rugby, delicious pizza to eat whilst watching and an excellent beer to go with it, along with John (tense "Come on!".) and Sherlock (Inquisitive. "why is he wearing that stupid hat?")

Hope you;re all having a nice evening too.

Joolz said...

Very good, Greg, that's the way to keep in with the in-laws. You might get a text yourself later or are you rooting for Italy instead of England? There's still time though ... Positivity is the way to go I keep telling myself. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I support whoever is convenient at the time ;) (So the All Blacks!)

Joolz said...

Isn't that exactly who you want to score the try. You can't go wrong with a Watson. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well.

Well done Wales - the better team got through.

Joolz said...

Not many points scored all round today, Sherlock and KT got the most with 4 points each so well done to you two.
The table after these three games looks like this:

Small Hobbit - 40
John - 35
Joolz, Lancs Anon - 34
Greg, Nameless, Pandabob - 33
Piplover - 32
Sherlock - 30

Good luck to all :)

EVen Sherlock's catching me up and he just picked where he'd most like to go on holiday!

My picks for today were definitely more heart than head...Ireland are clearly going to stamp Italy into the turf.

Still, I'm off work, it's wonderfully sunny, and there's a pork shoulder slow-roasting in the oven.

REReader said...

It is raw and rainy here--and I have a hectic day ahead of me, since I have two more holiday days starting tonight...and then done until Chanukah! (It's Smemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, in anyone is curious.)

pandabob said...

That sounds like a lovely day Greg even if there's a chance of disappointment from the men in shorts ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Joolz said...

Well done to John who got the most points today, I think he's got you in his sights, SH, though you're still the only person to have hit 40 points so far so I'm sure your purring will continue. ;) Sherlock's holiday choices have brought him even closer to you, Greg, only one point away now. It's a good job you had the footy to cheer you up. ;)
The table stands as follows:

Small Hobbit - 43

Lancs Anon was the only one to get two points for both games and wasn't too far off the actual results too so well done for that and here's how it has affected the table:

Ouch USA, ouch.

Small Hobbit said...

Oops - no-one got close to that score.

Ouch which way? (As though I couldn't guess.)

Greg Lestrade said...

SH - the USA certainly didn't get close!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, RR, didn't see your question - very much the wrong way for any Americans ;)

64-0 to the Boks.

REReader said...

...Is that a record loss, by any chance?

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, was watching the GBBO final!

Sherlock says I should go on it....

Anyway, yes, it's a record loss for this World Cup. I doubt it is for all time. There have been huuuuge scores in rugby before.

REReader said...

Considering the amount of attention rugby gets in the US, I think we should be happy with a record loss. :)

You SHOULD go on GBBO! (They started showing it on PBS last year on Sunday afternoons--this year we're seeing season 4, which I don't quite know why that is, but I'm enjoying it anyway.)

Greg Lestrade said...

USA might not get a lot of attention, but some of the teams aren't even professional sportsmen - they\re farmers/doctors and have had time off work to come here!

However, Georgia vs Namibia has broken the record for the longest half...49 mins! And they've gone to uncontested scrums because so many front row have been sent to the sinbin.

REReader said...

Granted I'm not the world's biggest sports fan (to put it mildly), but I had no idea that anyone in the US played rugby. Soccer, yes. Cricket, yes. Polo, yes. Rugby? I've never heard anything about US rubgy; nothing in a paper, nothing on television, nothing in a magazine, nothing online, nothing whatsoever. It's a puzzlement!

(I don't know what scrum, front row, or sinbin mean in that context. Actually, I don't know what sinbin means in any context... :) )

Greg Lestrade said...

I had no idea the USA played cricket...

sinbin or sin bin means they get sent off for 10mins because they've been naughty and their team plays a man down. For a scrum, you need the correct players in the correct places or it becomes dangerous, so if you lose key players and don't have anyone you can replace them with you have to go uncontested, which means you go through the motions but don't actually have a proper scrum - stick 'scrum' in youtube for examples of what happens. Hard to explain.

REReader said...

I can't say I've ever seen anyone playing cricket here, but I've certainly read articles about local cricket clubs, and I think there's a collegiate circuit as well.

Heh, I like the name sin bin for naughty corner!

Well, it's National Poetry Day today, and I know Sherlock's being poeming it up all day at school, so anyone want to share a favourite?

I've got one in mind, but I'll have to look it up when I get home - it's in one of John's books. Oddly enough, I don't own any poetry books myself. Yet another thing those three boys brought into my life.

I've always had a fondness for Emily Dickinson, and in fact I chose this poem of hers for a presentation in 8th grade for the pictures it painted in my minds eye (and I still know it by heart, and it still paints pictures in my mind):

She sweeps with many-colored brooms,
And leaves the shreds behind;
Oh, housewife in the evening west,
Come back, and dust the pond!

You dropped a purple ravelling in,
You dropped an amber thread;
And now you've littered all the East
With duds of emerald!

And still she plies her spotted brooms,
And still the aprons fly,
Till brooms fade softly into stars--
And then I come away.

The Lovesong of J Alfred Prufrock. It's too long for here, but one of my favorite lines is:

No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous -
Almost, at times, the Fool.

I grow old... I grow old...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

I have a soft spot for a couple of Shakespeare's sonnets, but here's a poem written earlier this year by Brian Bilston: At The Intersection. It's sad and funny and, I think, very clever, if somewhat flippant :-)

John posted up some of his favourites on his blog, so I'm afraid mine went up over there! But have another one here. More my sort of poetry, this one - knew it before I met J and the boys!

I'm Your Man

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you
If you want a partner
Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
Here I stand
I'm your man
If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
I'll examine every inch of you
If you want a driver
Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
You know you can
I'm your man

Ah, the moon's too bright
The chain's too tight
The beast won't go to sleep
I've been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep
Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or I'd crawl to you baby
And I'd fall at your feet
And I'd howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I'd claw at your heart
And I'd tear at your sheet
I'd say please, please
I'm your man

And if you've got to sleep
A moment on the road
I will steer for you
And if you want to work the street alone
I'll disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
Across the sand
I'm your man

If you want a lover
I'll do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
I'll wear a mask for you
