Camping it up.

Quick updates!

We're here. Tent is standing. Fire is lit. Sherlock is predictably unwilling to think about going to bed.

We haven't been down to the sea yet - it's a bit of a walk - but have explored the surrounding area. Dogs have made doggy friends. Sherlock has talked to everyone and probably now knows their life stories. And eaten ice cream.

I am very much looking forward to zipping myself to Danger and sleeping for a long time. Although I imagine Sherlock will be up at sparrow's fart desperate to go down to the (very cold) sea...

Oh, it sounds so lovely! How's Mycroft doing? I hope you're all having lots of fun. :3

J & L I'm sure you'll need to cuddle up to each other to keep warm.

Have a great holiday all four of you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mycroft is well! Bit cloudy for much stargazing, but he tells us it'll be better later in the week.

Looking forward to finding some fossils down by the sea, I think. And kite flyng. And letting the dogs run for miles, enjoying their freedom.

John H. D. Watson said...

Do you want to run too? Not necessarily for miles, but maybe just a bit in the morning?

Greg Lestrade said...

I could be persuaded. What do we do with the boys...leave them somewhere on the way? Or here? With the dogs?

It's not the same though...all this fresh air. Where's my London smog? I shall have to start smoking again just to get my daily ration of fumes and dirty air.

John H. D. Watson said...

If we leave them on the beach, we should be able to see them for quite a long way? Or they might want to come. I think it'd work if we go slow.

It's lovely. I could almost imagine living here.

Greg Lestrade said...

Okay.

And now I'm ready for bed. To enjoy the darkness, the silence....well, near silence. That's a dog snoring, right? Not one of the boys...I'm going to be worried if that noise is coming from a small(ish) child not bloody huge dog.

I could imagine living here. There's caves/old quarries down in the cliffs. We could live in one of them? We can walk down there tomorrow, choose a nice one.

John H. D. Watson said...

With a boulder to roll in front of it when your work comes to fetch you?

Mm, sleep.

Anon Without A Name said...

Don't complain about the dog snoring, it might provide essential noise camouflage, just in case :-p

The whole thing sounds idyllic so far; hope you have a wonderful time there :-)

If we moved to a sleepy little village then knowing my luck it would end up like one of those crime dramas - minimum of two murders per week, shady old ladies, murderous butlers, vicious trophy wives...

Nameless - ha, good point. Blame everything on the dogs.

John H. D. Watson said...

If you were lucky, one of the little old ladies would solve all the murders for you.

Anonymous said...

That sounds great! I'm glad y'all are having a good time. :)

The thing that always bothered me about those crime dramas is if theres two murders per week and it's really a little village than how are people still living there? After awhile, wouldn't they all either have been murdered or sent to jail?

Anonymous said...

Agreed, Midsomer is supposed to be a quiet little county. How have they had 85 episodes worth of murders since 1997? I mean, that's a lot.

Rider said...

Forget Midsomer. I have no idea why they haven't locked up Miss Marple. If she's not killing all those people and framing others for it, she's somehow inciting murder all over England.

Wherever she goes a body turns up, you'd have to be suspicious of that!

Here's hoping no bodies turn up. Who wants to work when they are supposed to be on holiday? (And imagine trying to keep Sherlock out of the way!)

It sounds like you guys are going to have a great time! Hope you all get a good sleep and are ready to face whatever adventures tomorrow will bring!

Greg, John - Have a nice morning stroll/run along the beach =) Here's to hoping that no one ends up in the sea... or, at least, too wet.

Sherlock - Have fun exploring the beach; just remember to look, not touch.

Mycroft - Let us know how the star gazing goes!

Rider - Don't forget Jessica Fletcher (in the States)! Wherever she visits, one of her friends is likely to drop dead in mysterious circumstances. All +246 of them...

At least Miss Marple gets invited specifically to solve the murders. Rosemary and Thyme simply go to do a bit of gardening and someone always dies. I wouldn't hire them if my life depended on it (which is probably would)

Hope you guys are having a great time and no murders ruin your holiday!

Small Hobbit said...

And if you meet anyone with the name of Barnaby, walk the other way very quickly!

Rider said...

Barnaby appears to solve his murder cases by waiting until all the suspects have been knocked off so the only person left in the case is the murderer.

Saves shoeleather but must play merry hell with real estate values.

I could almost imagine living here. Leave it in the imagination John. Have you any idea what sea air does to motorcycles?

Hooray, it sounds like you're all having a glorious time together without any murders around (sorry, Sherlock). It sounds just beautiful. I miss the ocean. I lived in Florida on summer break with my mother, but the rest of the time, and now, I live in the middle of the US, in a land-locked state, no large bodies of water for miles and miles.

Also - I had the oddest dream last night - no lie - about Sherlock being around 20, 21 somewhere in there, and coming home at his Universty break over Christmas. Home to your flat, not like home to his Mum's house. And you and L were laughing at him as he dove straight for the tree and started ripping open his presents at like 2:30 the day before Christmas. It was lovely. But why on earth would I dream of Christmas in August? I dread Christmas!

Heard about all the flash flooding in the south and Dorset area, hope you're all ok! Stay safe x

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks - we are. The rain has been torrential though! Still, tent currently dry (apart from the wet we all tramp in. Mycroft tries to dry the dogs, but they're not that keen)

And there's something rather lovely about the sound of rain on the tent when you're snuggled up warm and dry.

John H. D. Watson said...

Do you think Mrs Hudson's secretly solving murders on her bingo nights?

The rain's really nice actually, in the tent or out. I like watching it fall on the beach and the ocean, although, yeah, I do track a lot of wet into the tent afterward.

Greg Lestrade said...

Committing them, probably. Keeping me in work.

It was nice sitting in that cave in the cliff face earlier, watching the weather rolling across the ocean. And eating chocolate. Next time we should take the stove, then we could have tea too.

Anon Without A Name said...

I was wondering how you were getting on, watching the weather reports today. Between the sitting in a cave eating chocolate, and snuggling up in the tent, it sounds like you coped OK :-)

Tomorrow's supposed to be warmer and sunny.

Greg Lestrade said...

I can't believe how dark it is, so early. Where did summer go?

Still...all the better for sitting around a fire with a guitar, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

And a violin. This should be interesting.

Greg Lestrade said...

If you didn't bring an instrument to the party, you'll have to sing, Danger...

John H. D. Watson said...

You will almost certainly regret it if I do.

Greg Lestrade said...

Never.

You have yet to do anything I regret.

John H. D. Watson said...

The only thing to be said for my singing is that it's better than my clarinet playing.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sure that's not true.

Sherlock is desperate to swim in the see, off the rocks...if it's not too rough tomorrow, we could?

It will be bloody cold...

John H. D. Watson said...

You never heard me play clarinet! It might've put you right off me.

Sure, it'll be fun. It always feels warmer once you're in.

Greg Lestrade said...

Nothing like that could put me off you. You can't get rid of me that easily.

Yeah...right. you get to warm me back up when my extremities go blue, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

Of course. I'll even make you tea in a cave.

Greg Lestrade said...

You do say the sweetest things...

We should take a picnic, walk along the cliffs for a while, then swim down by where that quarry pool is blasted out of the rock. It'll be lovely.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sounds perfect. The dogs will love it too.

Sherlock, I work at a scientific magazine and I do our daily newsletter so I read a lot of scientific studies. I thought you might like this article because it's about children a little younger than you and quite far behind you. It's interesting. It wasn't the least bit pertinent to my newsletter but interesting none the less.

The sun is shining. (on and off, few clouds about)

Most wet stuff is now dry or drying, back at the campsite.

We're full of picnic.

And shortly, there will be swimming in the sea...Mycroft has informed us it is around 13.6 degrees....brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Still, got to be done. Last one in's a lemon.
