John has good looks

I know you're all thoroughly enjoying the little fashion show from the 80s John is currently posting on his blog.

So I thought it only right and decent that we got some visual fun over here, too.

Now, we all know John is good looking. And we also know he does Good Looks.

But just how do we go about classifying those looks? I feel an International Scale of Dangerous Glares* is needed.

Have a neutral, to start with, so we can then form comparisons. This is a 'fine, take my picture, see if I care' sort of look. Maybe a 0.25, as there's a touch of defiance in it.

And then we can move to a...warning look? A grade one? 1.5?

This is a sort of 'Are you going to take my photo? Seriously?' type look. (And also shows off our mutant wallpaper quite nicely.) Bit of eyebrow going on, bit of a warning glint...

Next, we move to a more serious 'Take my photo and your phone will go missing' look (except my phone is Met property, so he'd better not...)

And then onto a 'Sherlock, put that down or your chemistry set will be confiscated for a week' look. Grade 3?

 - I think that one comes with a dash of 'What are you trying to do, anyway?' thrown in.

I'll try to catch more, as they happen - obviously not when they're aimed at me. I can only imagine that I would suffer for that. Especially as we go up the grades.

*All Glares are subject to re-classification, as new glares are made available to us. The value of Glares may go up as well as down.

Of course, we'll also venture into the minus ranges, which include grins, smiles and generally goofy good-humoured type looks.

Hee! Well, you've certainly brightened my evening. :)

(Heaven and John only know what level Look you're about to get.)

...Ignoring the photos for the moment...

except my phone is Met property, so he'd better not...

I don't think I knew this. The same phone you...text me on? Really?

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, the way our life is under surveillance and that's what worries you?

I am supposed to have two, but I can barely cope with the one I've got, and I have to have it on me all the time, so I didn't see the point of having another one. And, oddly enough, last time I got issued a new one (after I'd known you for a bit, after Sherlock's 'arrest', etc.) it all became okay for me to just have one. Can't imagine how that could have happened coughMrsHolmescough.

Feel free to keep ignoring those pictures...

John H. D. Watson said...

They're not that bad I suppose. At least I don't have food hanging out of my mouth in any of them.

Greg Lestrade said...

You mean I shouldn't be afraid to go to sleep tonight?

They're gorgeous, as everything about you is.

It's possible that I will spend too much time staring at this post tomorrow when I should be working.

REReader said...

Flattery will get you everywhere? :D

(Yeah, good point--it's not flattery when it's true.)

REReader said...

The same phone you...text me on?

Oh, for a look at those...texts. :D

John H. D. Watson said...

It's possible that I will spend too much time staring at this post tomorrow when I should be working.

Does this mean you find my so-called looks attractive? Hmm.

Greg Lestrade said...

I find the control and the 1.5 very attractive. Mainly the 1.5 because of the associations my mind makes with the reasons you usually give me such looks, and what frequently happens after them. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. Fair enough.

Ha, the way our life is under surveillance and that's what worries you?

I'm used to Mrs H, and anyway I half suspect she can skip the surveillance and just read our minds. Your bosses potentially reading our texts is entirely different.

Greg Lestrade said...

I do delete texts from it quite often. And they'd only look at it if I did something that meant they needed it as evidence. Which I'm not planning on.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ah, all right. I shall stop worrying then, thanks.

REReader said...

Besides, a person who can make a single phone all fine can certainly disappear texts if needed...

Greg Lestrade said...

Of course, if I ever am a naughty boy, they'll be able to recover everything. And will. On the assumption I deleted it for a nefarious reason ;) so you better hope I'm good...

Desert Wanderer said...

Grade 3 makes me want to confess anything I've ever done.

The same phone you...text me on?

Giggling out loud and trying to explain why to my husband without using the word "sexting".

the way our life is under surveillance and that's what worries you?

Aaaand we're back to Dr Hotson's movie collection.

Superior officer - "DI Lestrade, you say you've had communication with the suspect? You'll have to hand over your phone."

Greg - "Ah, well . . ."

SO - "None of that, just hand it over."

Greg - *hands over phone* "But you see, sir, could I just-"

SO - *scrolling through phone, raises eyebrow, makes skeptical face* "A florist shop?"

I think ...texts are bad enough (especially when involving things that may or may not be copper coloured) , at least it wasn't ...texts and etc

A double dose might combust the phone!

Desert Wanderer said...

Is the "people" in your "people pushing their luck" tag you?

Also, a truer blog title was never writ.

Greg Lestrade said...

It absolutely is. But I've awoken intact...so he can't be too angry.

Desert Wanderer said...

Congrats. Like we (I) say about you, must be love. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Must be. I did a full check in the mirror, too, and he hasn't even marked me with pen.

Think I only got about a 2 glare last night, too. But then he was busy being concerned with my medical history at the time.

If Sarah doesn't get him to work more it's everyone's loss. He is a fantastic doctor.

Desert Wanderer said...

Not even a cutie mark?!

I think he should he training other docs. Some of them could do with an exposure to a good one.

I think I've caught your sleeplessness.l, BTW. Thanks for that. :P

Greg Lestrade said...

True, they could. I don't know how that all works.

Sorry you're not sleeping. It's a bastard, isn't it?

REReader said...

Insomnia is definitely Not Fun, whatever the cause. Sorry you've been having a bout, DW.

Didn't John say he wouldn't be working for Sarah during the school holidays? Now that they're over, maybe Sarah will start making full use of her good luck in having him available again...

Greg Lestrade said...

I hope so, RR. And yes, he can't really work in the holidays - be a bit of a piss take, as he's primarily employed to look after the boys. But the sick of London deserve his care and expertise, for sure.

REReader said...

And the boys need him (no matter what they think about being able to take care of themselves), absolutely!

But the holidays are done for a while now, so...

Anon Without A Name said...

Right, so the insomnia's catching. Not casting blame here, you understand. Just sayin'.

REReader said...

I'd say that's where I got it from, but I'd be lying.

Ah, what the heck. That's where I got it from!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, all of you not sleeping.

I slept like a baby last night...admittedly only for about 5 hours, but that's as much as I ever get, really.

Hope you all get some rest, at least.

REReader said...

5 hours, really? I can function on 5 hours--or even 3--but not well.

Very glad you slept well, though! No doubt you picked up all our missing zzzzs. Far better than it all going to waste. :)

I am beyond frustrated--there is a construction crew working on repairs on my building (for over 14 months now, *sigh*) and today they have managed to repeatedly cut out all power to the building. And every time they do it, all the electronics here scream. Naps not happening. :( Also, I'm afraid to turn on my computer (I'm now using my mom's laptop, but the screen's too small for my work really) until they figure out how not to do that. And I have jobs due...

Greg Lestrade said...

Can't say I recommend it. Years of broken/absent sleep, nightshifts, bad dreams and many gallons of coffee consumption have all contributed.

Good luck with the work.

REReader said...

Thanks! Nothing has shrieked at me for the past hour, but they could have been out to lunch (no doubt in all senses of the phrase). I'll give it another little while and then take the chance of turning on my desktop.

I hope your sleep cycles improve--cutting back on the caffeine, if you manage it, might help a bit?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, to be honest, it's John that helps the most. Very...relaxing. safe. I am improving. As is he, I think, so I assume we're good for each other.

REReader said...

I assume we're good for each other

Not the slightest doubt about it--and wonderful to hear. :))

REReader said...

*wonders where to look for a John or Lestrade of her own*

RIder said...

RR - they are social animals so you really need to have both of them. In a suitable cage with lots of space to burrow.

REReader said...

Oh, good point, Rider! :D

Desert Wanderer said...

Why am I thinking of Richard Attenborough?

"Be careful to separate the feeding bowls of the Medicus periculus from the Equus lictor, as the former prefers a rather more intense flavouring than his companion. However, the Medicus periculus will eat anything prepared for it (usually as an act of love) by the Equus lictor, especially if it contains the oft-sought-after "stuff" or even more.highly regarded "things."."

Greg Lestrade said...

I presume both those Latiny sounding things are vaguely complimentary... but Dicky Attenborough can go poke his camera where the sun don't shine if he thinks he'll get a mating ritual on film.

Although I suppose a camera there might catch quite a good shot...

REReader said...

It would definitely be far above the interest-level of the normal run of nature films.... :)

Desert Wanderer said...

Of course they're complimentary. Why would you think otherwise?

"Medicus periculus" is roughly "Dr. Danger"
"Equus lictor" is meant to be "Inspector Stallion" but was harder to translate. Yes, I know the order of the genus and the species are jacked up, sorry.

Greg Lestrade said...

I didn't think otherwise! I got John's, because it's close to the Italian. And I got the Equus bit because of that play that did the rounds... the other bit had me stumped.

Rider said...

the other bit had me stumped.

but you suspected it involved tongue?

Greg Lestrade said...

Suspected...yes? It would be oddly fitting. I do stick my tongue out quite a lot, when I'm thinking. Or just...I don't know. People have mentioned it, anyway. :P

REReader said...

*off in own little world*

Wait, "lictor" is ringing a faint bell--wasn't "lictor" the title of some sort of Roman official?

Medicus and Equus were easy enough, but I wasn't sure if it was "peri" as in around or as in danger--except that danger made more sense.

Under the circumstances.

REReader said...

Oh, and I have my computer back!

Someone finally told the construction crew to stop using power tools...that are PLUGGED INTO THE BUILDING'S POWER!!!

(Idiots. For heavy equipment, they are supposed to arrange with ConEd to hook into the main city lines, not use an ordinary EXTENSION CORD. It's a wonder they didn't set the building on fire.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Glad your power issues have been sorted.

REReader said...

Thank you! I just hope they stay that way--I woildn't put it past them to do it again tomorrow, with management out of the way.

It's quite enlightening, how many things need power to use.

Desert Wanderer said...

Or just...I don't know.

I bet.

How would we know your tongue is always out?

Rider, you're gonna get me in trouble. Every post of yours makes me laugh. I'm sure my boss thinks I'm a nutter.

Small Hobbit said...

DW is it also true that "once the Medicus periculus and the Equus lictor have burrowed down for the night it is best to leave them alone, as they can be quite grumpy if disturbed. However, if one looks closely one can sometimes see the Medicus periculus sucking its thumb"?

REReader said...

If there's a good reason to disturb them, though, they aren't grumpy at all.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm frequently both grumpy and disturbed, believe me.

Anon Without A Name said...

But generally less so when burrowed down with your Medicus periculus, presumably?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, generally.

Had a horrible dream the other night. Doesn't happen too often now though - now I'm used to sleeping with someone again, and that person is as lovely as a person can be. :)

Desert Wanderer said...

Sorry to hear that, Lestrade. :( Glad you have a lovely person, now, though. :D

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers. Yeah, I don't know what triggers them. Nothing, sometimes, I suppose. But generally loads better these days.

Hope you get some sleep tonight.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hope I get some sleep tonight... It's rude to return a gift! Whoever sent sleeplessness back this way, it's not on.

Desert Wanderer said...

You didn't say "no tagbacks..."

Greg Lestrade said...

True...

Right. Remain calm. Phone down. Deep breaths...

REReader said...

I hope you're long since asleep now, L--and having only nice dreams. And while I hope it's rarely or never needed, well, I'm five hours behind you and hardly ever get to bed before midnight, usually later, which nicely covers your night, and aside from Mondays and Fridays, i'm almost always online all evening. Feel free to come on and talk about horrid dreams, if that helps--or ordinary things, if that works better for you.

And that offer extends to you as well, John (I'd be more than happy to include Sherlock and Mycroft, but I suspect they'd rather have the two of you). I'm really good at boring babies to sleep, maybe I can bore the rest of humanity as well. :)

REReader said...

Ah...you okay, L?

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm fine, ta. I just get angry when sleep eludes me. Which doesn't help.

REReader said...

Yeah, no, it doesn't. (Especially when I throw things and then have to pick them up.)

Here's hoping you have a quiet and short day today. When do you next have a day off?

Greg Lestrade said...

Not sure... I don't like being off when I know people are running big ops. Maybe Thursday, but then again, might be better if I'm distracted when Danger is out biking, not sitting at home thinking about it!

REReader said...

Big op, hm? Okay, I won't ask. Just don't forget to take those days later--and maybe try for an early night tonight?

Good luck and stay safe. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ah, no bigger than they all are. Nothing out of the ordinary.

dw said...

Sorry last night was a bust for you. Hoping for a quiet by busy day.

Anon Without A Name said...

Did you get back to sleep OK, Lestrade?

Is the big op being run by your team, or another one? I suppose what I'm asking is, do you need to be there to run it/supervise it, or do you just want to be there because there's big op on?

Small Hobbit said...

Yeah, hope you did manage to get some sleep. No chance the sleeplessness and the big op are related?

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - my team, but they are capable of running it without me. I just don't like bring short handed when things might happen. And I've got a few little problems at the moment, with the team.

SH - don't think so. I did get a few hours lip. Don't feel too bad, but look like I've been exhumed...

dw said...

Quiet but busy, I mean. As opposed to mind mumbling dumb.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's busy enough, thanks. And people are chasing me left right and centre to commit dates for all my training/refresher//yearly physical etc. Like I don't have enough to do!

Desert Wanderer said...

How does your training work? Is it classrooms? Handsome stuff?

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm always handsome, don't need training for that ;)
But if you meant hands on, then yeah, bit of both. Got to do my driving refresher, first aid, that sort of stuff.

Desert Wanderer said...

Hands-on, yes. No question about handsome. :)

The driving refresher might be fun, though?

Greg Lestrade said...

I do quite enjoy it - although am also quite glad I don't often need it. But my car has blues and twos, so I need advanced training just in case.

And sorry, sleep deprivation clearly kills my modesty - which explains why I worked at ManHole for so long ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

And I've got a few little problems at the moment, with the team.

Nothing serious, I hope?

Did you semi-wake me up last night? I think I remember rambling on about artichokes for a good long while and then falling back asleep on you. Sorry.

REReader said...

Please don't take ithis as a criticism because I don't mean it that way--but isn't it going to be hard to cut back on your days at work if you feel you have to be at work whenever there's an op on?

Anonymous said...

No need to be modest - we're all in agreement.

The excuse for any rubbish I produced this morning was because they decided to restick the flooring next to my desk. Lots of solvent which had quite an interesting effect! Now sitting with a wide open window and the fan blowing the fumes outside, so slowly freezing instead.

Greg Lestrade said...

I might've, sorry. Was playing battleships on my phone for a bit, to get rid of some anger at not sleeping. You were muttering, but it was hard to hear what you were saying. I thought you were talking about choking, so I made sure you weren't!

Not a big problem, just one of my DCs severely unhappy with being here. Hes not been on the team long, and just can't deal with it. So he's on the list for transfer, but there's nowhere for him to go yet, so...well, trying to be as kind to him as I can be.

RR - yeah, it is. But I've worked it so I'm off Thursday now, because the other DIs are available that day, the DCI is about and Sally's in. I just don't want to leave the team when there isn't much backup.

John H. D. Watson said...

Poor boy. It's not a job for everyone.

All right, good. Thought you'd tried to wake me up for something and I'd just gone on at you about vegetables. They seemed really important at the time.

Greg Lestrade said...

Exactly. It's one thing seeing the odd death come and go thbrough your department, onto one of our squads, another to have it day in, day out. He'll be fine on one of the robbery squads or something. Got a good head on his shoulders, and had the sense to say something, not just stay on and stay miserable.

Definitely didn't mean to wake you up.

I can drop you at your lesson Thursday, if you want. And then go away and leave you in peace, and hide under the fnug or something until you're back.

And...in the afternoon I've got an appointment. If you're free to join me? What time's your lesson due to finish?

John H. D. Watson said...

Definitely didn't mean to wake you up.

You can if you like. Just to remind you.

Yeah, sounds good. I'll be done by noon. Is this a piercing appointment?

REReader said...

Is this a piercing appointment?

Just what I was wondering. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I know. Just...seemed like it would be a bit pointless, and just leave you knackered too.

It might be. Or I might be getting my eyes tested. You'll find out on Thursday.

kholly said...

I like the new poll but I was a bit torn on how to answer. I wanted to say I never use them because has become very consistent at waking me up slightly before I need to be. Just early enough that I growl back at her, but not so early that it's worth crawling back under the covers for an extra half hour. But never is too strong because I do have to set them when I'm traveling for work and I hate them then whether I'm awake already or not.

Desert Wanderer said...

I chose "when awake" because I get more frustrated knowing I should be needeing something to wake me up, and I'm not.

Greg Lestrade said...

I chose both. Although sometimes when I'm awake it's just a relief knowing night's over and I can stop trying.

Wasn't such a problem when I lived alone, because is just get up and do work at 3am or whenever and no one would know or care.

Piplover said...

I hate alarm clocks, period. They're annoying when they wake you up, and annoying when you're lying there, thinking you have a few more minutes to just be miserably awake.

REReader said...

I chose both, too. Alarm clocks are the work of de debil.

I don't mind insomnia so much if I don't have to be particularly alert the next day, which is most of the time since I work from home. I can manage with a few hours--or even none, if it's just me I have to deal with the next day. It's much more of a problem if I have an early morning appointment or class--and worst if I have an evening appointment or class, because I know I'll spend half the afternoon trying and failing to nap.

KHolly said...

that would be the dog waking me up, by the way. I try not to growl at actual people no matter the time of day.

REReader said...

KHolly, I thought you must have meant to say dog or cat, I just didn't know which. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

I guessed, KHolly. Although I do growl at people, so wouldn't judge you for it

Small Hobbit said...

I voted for always annoying, because whether awake or asleep it means I have to get out of my nice warm bed.

Um, yes, I growl at people too.

Calliope said...

I almost killed my alarm clock today for waking me, but it seems to be made of stern stuff.

Good thing I was the only one up, though, as I would have certainly done some growling this morning.

Is it nap time yet?

Greg Lestrade said...

Dunno about nap time, but it is home time for me, and then a glorious day off, to be spent with my lovely boyfriend (whilst trying not to worry that he's off straddling a big throbbing beast without me, in the morning ..)

REReader said...

That sounds lovely!

(Not forgetting a noontime appointment and a degu cage refit. But there should be a nice afternoon in between!)

I'm afraid I'm a morning person. WHich means I don't bother with alarm clocks but I regularly want to shoot my neighbours who have shouting matches at midnight
