Bikes, Blokes and Baking

This is the kitchen in a house I've been to fairly recently.

I'm torn between liking it and finding it a bit too cold and stark.

But I do love the sink and taps. I want one. Obviously not going to get one, as our kitchen is brand spanking new already!

Sorry, made the picture huge so you could actually see what I'm going on about.

Had a lovely day today. Dropped Sherlock and John off to their workplaces, then went for a long run in Hyde Park, with a stop to dunk my feet/head in the Diana memorial because it was so hot. Then got back to sit about in my boxers after a shower and do my paperwork with all the windows open because it was boiling in the flat.

Danger got home, got even more hot and sticky, then went to pick up Sherlock from school and head to the park where we messed about for a while, ate ice cream, John got annoyed because he claims I'm already getting a tan, Sherlock lamented not growing faster and hung off the monkey bars for ages to try and stretch himself out, because he wants to ride a motorbike and get taller generally, and then we cam home where I'm now half-supervising cooking some spuds and crispy bacon to go with salad.

And tomorrow I have Danger with me ALL DAY. And am hopefully going to test ride on of these:

And try not to want one too much... Danger, we must organise your off-road day!

Do we get one (well, two) of those for it?

No, much smaller more fun bikes. That's one that can carry all your gear on it and takes two of you to puck it up when it goes over. We'll get nippy little things for jumping and having fun.

Sounds like fun.

Hmmm. Not enamored of all the stainless. But I do like the lack of hardware (nice clean look), and the marble counter tops, although I hear they aren't so easy to take care of. Some very non-white paint and a glass-tile backsplash would do wonders! Is it the under-the-counter sink bit you like, L?

You're all very quiet this evening--has all the running and climbing and, erm, other activities just worn everyone out? :)

RR - they're concrete worktops. Probably fine until you spill beetroot on them...

And It's just the huge industrial tap I like :)

The kitchen looks lovely Greg but the bike looks better ;-)

I really hope you two both have a great day tomorrow not just with the bikes but making the most of your day :-)

Hows the evening going? I hope sherlock was tired out enough to sleep well :-)

Concrete can't be really stain-proof, I wouldn't think.

We have a curved-over tap in our kitchen here, good for filling pots--but nothing like that one!

That's a flexible hose, with... like a shower head on the end, turns on when you pull down on it. Fantastic.

REReader said...

Yeah, I can just about make that out if I zoom in on the image--THAT would be very handy for rinsing large pots and pans!

do you have to keep pulling on it to make it spray L? ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I believe so, Anon. Perfect, see? I have plenty of experience.

REReader said...

....

Nope, not gonna say anything.

then you should buy one forthwith or continue practicing on something(someone) else ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

My practice partner might complain if I bought one and tugged on it all the time...

I did hear that he wasn't really the sharing kind!

best to keep him happy I would say ;)

I'm not sure where to put this...but, Mycroft, are you planning on observing the transit of Venus? It will be visible in the UK at sunrise on June 6. (I was just listening to a podcast about it, that's why I thought of it--and it's only two weeks off!)

Aaaaand since I'm still awake, a good morning to those awake or soon to be!

(I hope that comment at around 3:00am was just you being awake briefly again, John... :))

Have a fun day test driving!

3am comment was probably because it's too hot to sleep.

Holy crap REReader, are you the comment police?

Can John or Lestrade comment whenever they feel like without you mentioning the time and asking about it? (you do know about time zones, don't you)

REReader said...

Yikes, L, it's not even summer yet! Tha sounds miserable. :(

Anon--If either of them minds my concern about insomnia, they know how to say so. (Yes, obviously.)

pandabob said...

this week may be our summer RR we've all got to get our too hot moans in now ;-)

Anonymous said...

lol RR, maybe the fact they don't run to your "defense" is a hint. I love that the only way for you to believe you're being annoying is if they personally explain to you and (break character).

(Really? Poor John can only comment in acceptable UK time)

John along with most people here is a known insomniac Anon. We check up on each other when we're around at strange times, we have lovely bedtime stories sometimes and we all play very nicely together with love and respect for all.

Don't like it don't read it but there is no need to say nasty things to people who are looking out for their friends.

The way I see these blogs is that they'll attract the same people as the rest of life. Some you'll get along with, some will wind you up. But I'm not about to start policing anyone's comments. Too much like work.

pandabob said...

How was your day Greg? Fall in love with many bikes? ;-)

I hope you've both had fun :-)

REReader said...

Thanks, Anony.

Anonymous, please feel free to skip my comments--easy to do as they are clearly marked with a name and avatar. It will not offend me in the slightest.

Yes, L, how was the test riding?

I do like that kitchen, very nice. I'm quite a fan of stainless steel; and my nephew has been talking about putting polished concrete worktops in his new house. Much nicer than our boring laminate ones.

given the reasons you may have come across this kitchen Greg I was wondering is blood easier to get out of things than beetroot? ;-)

Catching up after more than a month of silence:

I like this kitchen. We've already decided to get a concrete kitchen in our mystical future home after researching all the stuff: the concrete is of a special kind mixed up with different protective stuff and waxes and so it dries very very slowly - like nearly up to two months slowly. Then it gets coated in more of the waxes and gets a high polish. Unless you really scratch it or spill something highly caustic on it, it will hold nicely.

The advantage of the concrete is quite a variety of colors and shades, you can literally get any shape of the top desk done and also you can insert objects into the desk as well - like parallel metal rods for putting the hot pans on, a gentle slope for draining the dishes or flat ornaments - I've seen brass silhouettes and amonite shells and flat polished precious stones...

So yeah, I would go for it (only with different color of the cupboard doors) :)

for pandabob in a case they come back to this older post: blood is MUCH easier to get out of things than beetroot, especially fresh blood - from the culinary clean-up point of view. You can wash out the blood pretty much easily, especially if you dunk the stuff in cold running water, but the beetroot stains like the devil himself! :-)

Subscriptions to posts last forever apparently CR :-)

Thanks for the blood verses Beetroot info :-)
