It's for CHARITY

I'd like all your opinions on whether I should do a very very good thing for charity.

Some clever officers at the yard are organising one of those TASTEFUL nude calendars that are entirely not pornographic and would raise lots of money for CHARITY. So what do you think, should I do it? I mean, look at me, lots of people would buy it if it had me in it, right? And you wouldn't be able to see anything, as it would all be posed all arty like in the film when the old women did it.

Here's a picture of me from yesterday so you can all vote a big 'YES, DO IT' and then everyone will be dead pleased that I agreed and lots of money will be raised and Sally (who is also doing it) will buy me coffee for a week.

Coffee for a week, eh? That might end up being quite a lot of coffee. Hope she realises that...

Actually, when he reads this, I suspect coffee will be the least of her problems.

I see someone's braved Lestallion's den then :-)

You know, it's almost worth saying yes just so he learns to lock his PC/log out of the blogs/whatever :-p

pandabob said...

great job you brave person

REReader said...

Hee!

John H. D. Watson said...

It is a great picture. He didn't show me that one.

Greg Lestrade said...

SERGEANT DONOVAN!

You'll do more than buy me bloody coffee for a week.

I've told you I'm not doing it, and whatever anyone on here says, I still won't be doing it. End of.

REReader said...

It is indeed. Cool shades, too. :)

REReader said...

(I was responding to you, John. :))

John H. D. Watson said...

Ooh, rank and last name... I think you're in trouble, Sally.

pandabob said...

No one here would ever suggest you should do something like this if you don't want to Greg but you can't say that it wouldn't sell more copies if you did ;-)

mazarin said...

Wow, seriously, what Anonybob said. You can't deny it'd sell more copies. Hell, I'd probably mail order one to be sent across the Atlantic.

(I promise I want it for nothing naughty, John. JUST FOR CHARITY AND ALL.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Maz - I'm sure his dignity would be fully protected anyway. Possibly by a policeman's helmet.

Small Hobbit said...

Seems like a good idea to me and it is for CHARITY. I'd buy one ;) Where do I get to vote for it?

Greg Lestrade said...

I can assure you there are lots of good looking people who will be taking part, if you want to buy a copy. I just won't be one of them.

Anonymous said...

helmet over his helmet! really John ;-)

pandabob said...

There is no poll so we can't vote anyway but stick to your guns Greg :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

L - good, I'd rather keep you to myself anyway.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's all very nice of you, very flattering, but I'm not about to strip off in front of anyone or anything but John.

And Sherlock, staring at the oven won't make the biscuits cook any faster.

Sherlock said...

Are you sure? Has anyone ever proved that?

Greg Lestrade said...

unless you've got...heat ray eyes or some other power, then why would it make a difference?

Speaking of, I saw there's going to be the first super-hero comic-book gay marriage soon. So progressive, super heros.

REReader said...

One day you should do an experiment--bake one pan of biscuits with Sherlock staring at the oven and one with him not and see if the force of mind speeds the process. :)

Sherlock said...

Mycroft says there's quantum things that act different when you look at them so maybe other things do it too or maybe there's quantum EVERYWHERE.

Why do people want to buy pictures of you with no clothes on?

Greg Lestrade said...

You should definitely ask Mycroft about that next week then.

Why do people want to buy pictures of you with no clothes on?

I have no idea.

pandabob said...

Twice I've said you shouldn't do it if you don't want to Greg and still somehow I feel like I've slipped into that place I really don't like to be because I know you don't like it. sorry.

Are you really making custard creams? I so wish I had your kind of energy at the end of a day!!

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob, I am indeed making custard creams. Well, waiting for them to cool right now, to apply the custardy bit. And don't worry, you're fine. And I appreciate you voicing your support for my not doing it, I really do.

John H. D. Watson said...

He is really making custard creams. He's very good to me.

Rider said...

But is he making curried custard creams?

Or are you saving that for a very special occasion?

pandabob said...

You are a lucky man Doctor Watson but at least you know it :-)

Seriously impressed Greg I have the energy for nowt by this time of day and I don't do a hard days work!

John H. D. Watson said...

Rider - they're not curried ones. I think it might be good, but L and Sherlock have severe doubts.

Greg Lestrade said...

I have doubts about most things curried, to be fair.

Small Hobbit said...

It is a very nice picture though. Well worth seeing.

mazarin said...

Aw, we're just giving you a good, old-fashioned ribbing, L. I highly doubt anyone would seriously try to get you to do something you were uncomfortable with in any way.

Thanks, Sally, for the giggle, though of course I wasn't trying to make you uncomfortable, Lestrade. Truly.

Greg Lestrade said...

it's all right. Been getting it all week in the office. Not that most of them know.

maz said...

Been getting what all week? Teased?

Nicky said...

That is a nice picture, Gregorio. You should see if you can get a proper copy, John.

Just thought I'd leave a note saying Mum's okay. She's a bit quiet, but she's sober now, and, well, okay.

I hope you have a brilliant time meeting Rachel, all of you.

pandabob said...

Glad your mum's Ok Nicky that is great news :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers Nicky. Thanks for going over there. Sorry you have to cop it all the time, being closest.

Maz - hassle to be in this calendar.

REReader said...

I'm glad your mother's okay now, Nicky and L. (May I say how much I admire you for the way you take care of her--it has to be beyond wearing.)

Hopefully this will put an end to the hassling, L. (It is a compliment that they want you in the calendar--but really, no is no!)

("Possibly," of course, may not be yes, but is not no. :))

REReader said...

You should definitely ask Mycroft about that next week then.

*wistfully* I really wish I could be a fly on the wall when Mycroft explains the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics to Sherlock, let alone Schrodinger's Cat...it'll be something to talk about in the museum, no doubt. :)

(Before anyone asks--I know what those are, yes, well enough to tell it over but that's it. I do not understand them on any deep level. I don't have the mathematics for it and I never will.)

pandabob said...

It sounds like you've had a hell of a time at work the last wee while Greg, no wonder you had views to exchange today ;-)

I hope you enjoyed your custard creams and that Sherlock didn't have to go to bed before they were ready ;-)

Desert Wanderer said...

The real question is, Sherlock, if watching the oven does make them cook faster, are you calibrated to ensure you don't look too much and thus burn them?

REReader said...

Interesting, DW. It would take a lot of testing.

Rider said...

And does the cooking stare only work on ovens? Do kettles boil faster? What about DIs leaving work, do they appear more quickly if you stare at the door?

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - 'okay' generally means 'mostly conscious and not in hospital'. Who knows if one day it'll mean 'sober and alert'. I'm beginning to lose hope on that front.

AnonyBob - it's just...work. Nothing major. Constant annoyances are part of most jobs, right?

Sherlock ate the component parts of a few custard creams - putting the biscuit and filing in his mouth and chewing. Which is silly, really, as usually he takes them apart when I've made them...

pandabob said...

Annoyances come with work, constant might be going a bit too far, but given everything else you have going on (and this bloody calander thing) I think you could say you've every right to be a bit fed up!

I really am sorry about your mum I hope this a blip and shes back to making an effort again soon.

Glad Sherlock got to enjoy the biscuits in some form, everyone takes custard creams apart to eat don't they?

hope you get some good sleep tonight :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah, I think constant is part of the job if you're a police officer.

After all, we're not exactly popular!

From what Nicky said to me earlier, Mum's... well, hopefully it's done now, and we can carry on with getting along again. No point dwelling on it.

Cheers

REReader said...

L, all you and Nicky can do is see that if she needs hospitalization she gets it. Anything more is really up to her--and I can't imagine much that would be harder than living with that.

I think that it makes perfect sense for Sherlock to deconstruct and reconstruct custard creams in different ways--variety, you know! :)

Ro said...

Well, DI Superfine, I can see why they asked - but completely understand your reluctance! That's a great photo, I agree with Nicky about John getting a proper copy. Mind you, John has the real thing, so probably has little need for a photograph!

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks, Ro. I'm very flattered.

REReader said...

Heat making sleep problematic still, L?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, It's cooled right off. Just warm now.

John was pretty restless. Dreaming, I guess. I wasn't exactly sleeping soundly anyway

Small Hobbit said...

Hope your day goes better today L. Not looking forward to today, I had a bad day yesterday - nothing specific, just a general feeling that things are going on that will impinge negatively on what I'm doing.

pandabob said...

I hope you have a better day today SH :-)

Did you get some sleep Greg? did you John? Lots of water with your coffee Greg ;-) try and avoid headaches before they hit today :-) I hope today is better than yesterday and that there is no need for raised voices :-)

Hope work treats you well John :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

SH - I hope the negative things don't happen. Good luck with that. And that you have a better day today.

Some sleep, thanks, AnonyBob.

Got a meeting with the super and my DCI now. Reckon after that the rest of the week has to get better, right? :)

REReader said...

Hope your meeting is going well for you, L!

And that everyone is has been having a smooth and pleasant morning...

pandabob said...

Glad you got some sleep Greg :-)

I really hope the meeting is going ok and that the week does get better from there :-)

Mazarin said...

Hope the week only gets better from here. Perhaps now everyone will stop hassling you about the calendar? I do still feel bad - I don't tease too often, and had I known it was a sore spot, I'd not have stumbled in and whacked on it.

John - I hope you're doing okay as well. You tend to go quiet, so there isn't as much chatting back and forth but that doesn't mean we've forgotten you and what you're going through. I'm glad to hear Red's mum does have her sister, even if she's driving her batty at the moment.

It seems a bit rough all 'round. Everyone's week can only go up from here, right? We are currently -1 hamster and +1 devastated boy, so I'm trying to print a picture of Luna for his room and hoping the 10 minutes we said goodbye yesterday before she was boxed up is enough for him to feel closure.

Small Hobbit said...

Hope your meeting went well, or at least reasonably, L.

In talking with my boss (who I like) this morning I basically accused my other boss of lying! However, today is better, thank you, I'm being left to get on with some work.

Death of a beloved pet is always difficult, Maz. Hope your son starts to feel a bit happier soon.

Greg Lestrade said...

I hope your son's okay, Maz. I...can't even begin to imagine what it'll be like if one of the goos or dogs goes...

As for my meeting...I've still got a job, and still on an MIT. So it didn't go too badly :)

pandabob said...

didn't go too badly is kind of good I guess :-)

hope the afternoon is ok :-)

Sorry your son is having such a tough time Maz I hope he's OK and life treats him better soon :-)

REReader said...

Oh, ouch, Maz. :( I hope things start going all completely right now for your family--sounds like you've had your share of wrong for a good while.

John--what Maz said. How're you doing?

L--"AN MIT"? Does that mean a transfer or some other disruption? Or am I making entirely too much of an article (I hope)?

Mazarin said...

Thanks, everyone. He's...okay. He cried last night, and seems wistful this morning, wanting to know exactly where she is (in a box, location currently undisclosed), and wanted a picture for his room. We do so get attached to those furry little creatures.

He wants another one. I can't decide if this is a good idea or not. Or if we should wait until after vacation in a couple weeks, at least.

Glad the meeting went well, L. MIT - Major Investigations Team? (Acronyms and I are pretty good friends - I work for the government, after all!)

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - nothing dramatic, no. How should I have said it?

Maz - murder, not major. But misnamed, as we do murder, attempted, kidnap, serial rapes, all sorts. Your version is better :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Desert Wanderer said...

Lestrade, just out of curiosity, how much coffee has Sally bought you today? Also, I found this pic that made me think of you and Doc, although I can't quite put my finger on why...

REReader said...

Oh, good!

(There's no should or shouldn't, it's just that I saw "an" instead of "my" or "the" and started to worry that that meant they were switching you to a different team for some reason. And calendars aside, this is YOUR team, and I didn't think you'd like that.)

Maz, I'd think that waiting until vacation starts makes sense--it's a definite and close date, so it's not waiting a long time, and there will be a clear distinction between the pets. But I'm not at all sure.

REReader said...

Hee, DW, that is AWESOME! (How do you find these things? :))

Small Hobbit said...

DW - that's brilliant, although I am wondering what you were looking for when you found it ;)

Maz,definitely wait until after you've been on vacation otherwise you'll have to find someone to take care of him/her and then everyone will worry whether she/he is alright. After which if he's still keen to have another hamster then maybe use getting one to break up the long school holiday.

mazarin said...

I think you're right, SH, RR. That way there's a definite time, and we can gauge his interest after the first sadness has passed.

DW, I think that's the perfect reaction to any argument, really.

L - I'd argue for the name change with pedant formed of years of government lackey-ship. :D In the States, many groups like yours are called Major Case squads, or here in Indy, we have those that are exceptionally specialized - the Homicide Unit, which has solved over 80% of their cases. High enough that for a while they had their own show where cameras followed them around, called "The Shift." It was really fascinating to watch, though a little unnerving, as some of those things that happened you don't really see the full extent of on the evening news.

Greg Lestrade said...

For us, MITs are part of HSCC - homicide and serious crime command. Hence us working on other things when we don't have a murder investigation on.

And yeah, mainly glad people don't see what we see. But it would be nice if they understood a little more sometimes.

Sorry, bit busy, hence quiet. Rang John earlier and could hear Sherlock playing his violin in the background, which was nice.

Greg Lestrade said...

DW - that's brilliant. And she hasn't bought me nearly enough coffee.

RR - although I refer to the officers under me as 'my' team, it isn't really.

REReader said...

L--They're the people you're used to working with, no? I'd call that "yours".

Perhaps one day Sherlock would like to put an audio clip of himself playing something for us, that would be lovely...

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, but if I moved my new team would immediately become 'mine' and this lot would be 'my old...', just as all the others have over the years.

My DCI suggested I should move back to Gangs. The Super asked me if I wanted to, I said no, job done.

Well, they carried on for ages, but I wasn't listening much, was mainly thinking about dinner.

And right now, I'm off to cook that very dinner :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Thank goodness your super is a reasonable human being who knows how good you are at your job (and how sad Sherlock would be if you ran out of murder stories...).

REReader said...

how sad Sherlock would be if you ran out of murder stories

I can just hear the phone call now...

Sally said...

He's just gone, John.

Super knows this team has the best clear up rate in the Met. He's not about to let the boss go.

Sorry about posting this if it really bothered him. Forgot his bastard ex was a photographer. Still, least you got to see that picture if he hadn't shown it to you.

pandabob said...

I'm glad the super knows your worth, and the importance of your murder stories :-)

I hope busy was still better than yesterday and that the dinner you've been thinking about for hours is as good as it should be :-)

I hope you've had a nice day John.

It's a lovely picture Sally.

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - I hope so too. Kung Pao Shrimp and cashews. Hot sauce on the side for Danger, cool sauce for me, and Sherlock can concoct his own.

REReader said...

That sounds like the makings of a nice evening. :) Here's hoping that's what you're all having!

(I'm glad we all had a chance to see the photo, Sally!)

John H. D. Watson said...

It's delicious, better than I've had in restaurants.

Desert Wanderer said...

Still, least you got to see that picture if he hadn't shown it to you.

Public servant through and through, Sally. Well done. :)

That one is a nice photo Sally and everyone forgets things sometimes but I hope that's the last he'll here about the calander idea.

Glad you've had an OK day Greg and that tea is so good.

Sherlock said...

Lestrade went to have a shower and now he's asleep on the bed and John hasn't noticed yet but I'm not supposed to wake people up and I want pudding so I might tell John.

REReader said...

Sherlock, you are definitely right not to wake him--he must be very tired indeed to fall asleep this early. I think it would be fine to ask John for dessert.

John H. D. Watson said...

We're having custard creams and cleaning up the kitchen.

Sherlock said...

I'll have custard creams and you can clean because then I can do supervising.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. Nice try, but no. Cleaning first, custard creams afterward.

REReader said...

I'm sure you excel at supervising, Sherlock! (I bet you could do some of the cleaning up, too, even though it's pretty hard to do both.)

It's been a stressful several days all round--I hope you're getting a chance to relax a bit too, John. How are you doing?

Sherlock said...

But Mrs T says it's important to take turns except not at being the teacher because that's in my book now. But you're not a teacher you're John so that's not in my book.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock - Not at being the nanny either. I will have her put it in your book.

RR - I'm all right. Rather not relax really. Better to keep busy.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not asleep.

Was...meditating. whilst slightly wet and dressed n a towel.

Sherlock, you don't get to take turns being a John either. So to speak.

Just getting dry.

REReader said...

What works for you is what you should do, John. (I'm of the "keep busy" school myself, although most of the people I know don't quite approve. What do they know?)

Meditation is an excellent way to spend a bit of time, L. As is resting your eyes. :)
