Ingonyama ilele

Our oven is broken. Sherlock isn't happy about this. Apparently it's my fault, because he isn't allowed to use it... there's a logic in there somewhere.

Anyway, saw this, thought of our current situation:

Today we went to Longleat. I've been there before, on a school trip. Our teacher, Mrs M, swore she knew the way through the maze. We all got lost. For ages. We never reached the middle.

Sherlock loved the bat cave, and...well, most of it, really. It is well done, the whole place. I tried to explain about Lord Bath and his 'wifelets'...he didn't get it. I'm not sure I get it.

We've fed deer, held tarantulas and snakes, seen Monkeys steal someone's windscreen wipers, watched lions sleeping...it was great. And Sherlock is tired out, and currently asleep on a seat in the living room, all curled up.

Mycroft said he enjoyed it, too. Especially the birds of prey show that Sherlock started this whole conversation with, and the wolves.

I'm not sure what John's favourite bit was. John?

Mine was just...the four of us. I love it. Love it even more when I feel brave enough to hold John's hand, in the dark of the batcave, or the audience of the bird show ;) Or steal a kiss in a deserted bit of maze. Until Sherlock leaps out of a hedge onto us.

A wolf, eating a ...dead thing.

The tarantula you tried to put on my head.

And yeah, being there with all of us together.

REReader said...

Sounds like a perfectly lovely day! (Dead things notwithstanding.)

:)

Greg Lestrade said...

It was a rare Danger-head-dwelling tarantula. It was just trying to get home.

I'm going to take Sherlock up to bed, before I forget he's there. If you give me my legs back.

John H. D. Watson said...

Well...if you insist. I suppose.

I always think its the sign of a good day trip when the smallest member of the party is curled up asleep somewhere and the adults are at the point of contented tiredness :-)

I'm so glad you had fun together and I hope Sherlock doesn't wake up to much in the transfer.

Greg Lestrade said...

He's okay, now I've got his pillows and fnug just how he likes them.

(Who said they just figured out what a fnug was? It's a duvet, for anyone wondering. I've just...always called it a fnug.)

Anon Without A Name said...

Sounds like you had pretty much the perfect family day out :-)

Kestrel337 said...

fnug makes me think of 'snuv' from The Lorax.

Sounds like a delightfully exhausting kind of day.

Greg Lestrade said...

...and I've just woken up, still on the sofa, and nearly shoved John onto the floor in a heap.

Time for bed.

Anonymous said...

I thought a fnug might be duvet but I was never quite sure. (I'll admit to not understanding how -- or why -- to break a lime, too.)

Longleat sounds fantastic. I expect Sherlock will want to go again, and soon. I would! But no tarantulas please. John, you are much braver than I! (And at least it wasn't a camel spider.)

Greg Lestrade said...

He is very brave.

And yeah, we probably will go back. Hopefuly with Nicky's mob.

pandabob said...

Is the Sun shining on you this morning gents?

Have fun whatever you're up to :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, it's fairly nice.

We're trying to tire the dogs out a bit with a huge walk. It probably won't work. Then going to the allotment!

pandabob said...

That sounds like a pretty perfect way to spend your day :-)

Have fun.

Greg Lestrade said...

Cheers. I hope the sun is shining on you too. I guess yours have been back to school for a week already, like Nicky's? So I hope you have a great weekend.

pandabob said...

Yeah Shorty's been back at school so the pair of them are making up for lost time today :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Well, we;ve dug some more allotment, planted some beetroot and Sherlock and Mycroft have planted some leek seedlings (or whatever you call them) in some little trays we bought, and we've 'borrowed' a low down shelf in Reg's greenhouse, which he's letting us use until we've sorted out some cold frames for us.

And shortly we're going to meet Carla and Paul at the station.

ro said...

Oh, yum! Beetroots and leeks! Great choices! Have fun with the offroading.

Greg Lestrade said...

We're slowly learning what we want to plant vs. what we can plant now! Of course, nothing can grow fast enough for certain small people :)

I'm hoping I don't get called into work after Sal called me about a case...don't think I will, but I'll be jumpy every time my phone goes.

pandabob said...

I went Scuba diving with a guy who was on call once and after three calls from his boss he 'accidently' dropped his phone over the side of the boat!

I'm not really suggesting you bury your phone somewhere on the allotment but you know, it would stop the jumpiness ;-)

enjoy your afternoon :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, yeah, don't think I'd keep my job if I did that :)

Right - watch out London, because the fearless four are now unsupervised and among you... John and I have been told we're not needed, and we should go and 'have a nice time' 'enjoy yourselves' 'be boring' and 'don't tell us WHAT you do, Uncle Orio' - you can decide who said which.

John H. D. Watson said...

If the city explodes before dinner time, you'll all know who to blame.

Greg Lestrade said...

...the nanny? ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

...Probably.

Greg Lestrade said...

Have I mentioned recently how very very much I like being boring with you, and doing things that children never need know about?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not recently... We haven't had that much opportunity to be boring recently. So we should make the most of it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Definitely.

Come over here and I'll tell you just exactly how boring I'd like to be. In detail. Whilst removing that wet shirt from you, or you might catch cold... In fact, just purely for medical reasons, I should probably let you share a bit of body heat.

Greg Lestrade said...

...just emerging from my worship of John, arse 'n all, to say YES! Arsenal! :)

A nice quiet day on the blogs, then, unless the adventurers decide to check in. I hope you all enjoy yourselves.

If anyone feels ambitious later, you might try making cupcakes. If you do, eat one for me. I'm stuck on a liquid diet for a few days.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mm. If they're reading this - Kids, as interesting as it might be, please stay away from Trafalgar Square. I'd appreciate it.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sherlock will now want to go there immediately...

Greg Lestrade said...

I know, I know...but I kind of think he'd want to go anyway. They'll probably see people on their way there.

Guess I'm trusting that he'll want to be allowed out with Mycroft and Carla again, and therefore he'll do as I ask.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure he will. Well, nearly sure. And he has two and a half sensible people with him. No, I'm not sure which is the non-sensible half. They probably share it between them.

pandabob said...

Sherlock is so lucky to have an older brother who is old enough to take him out :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmm. Mycroft and Carla have some making up to do on the 'responsibility' front after their last trip out in the city together.

Dunno, think I'm getting irrationally worried because I see the sort of trouble that finds kids far too often.

Greg Lestrade said...

Old enough and agrees to it, yeah, AnonyBob!

John H. D. Watson said...

I am often relieved they have security watching them somewhere out of sight.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, me too.

Although they didn't cover themselves in glory last time either...

Ignore me, I know it's completely irrational. I'll just be glad when they're home.

John H. D. Watson said...

I won't ignore you, but I will make some tea.

Greg Lestrade said...

My hero. A grey rainy afternoon, a mug of tea and a hot doc. Might have to hinder your tea making by hugging you a lot :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I think hugs have become an integral part of tea making.

Greg Lestrade said...

lucky you can reach everything apart frm the milk without me moving or unwrapping my arms from you. From behind, it just looks like I have four arms. And enjoy hugging myself with two of them.

And apparently, smacking myself for nibbling the ear on my second head... hmm.

John H. D. Watson said...

Well you shouldn't nibble yourself while you're trying to pour water, it's distracting. To...you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry. I'm just feeling terribly narcissistic, obviously...

Paul said...

Uncle Orio why do you pull this shit it's embarrassing

Greg Lestrade said...

Stop reading then! My blog, my rules. And no one you know reads it. Or if they do, it's because you told them about it!

John H. D. Watson said...

A lot of life is embarrassing, Paul. Eventually, you get used it, and then it's not anymore.

Sherlock said...

I have to live with them and it's not embarrassing just boooooooooring and we're on the way home and I hope you made the dough not just kissing because we need to make pizza like you said and we're FINE and Mycroft and Carla wouldn't let us go to Trafalgar Square even if we didn't tell you so there

John H. D. Watson said...

Which is worse, embarrassing or boring?

We might've managed some dough making in between the kissing.

Thank you, Mycroft and Carla.

Greg Lestrade said...

Are we boringly embarrassing, or embarrassingly boring?

And yeah, you'll get over it. Your mum did. And I was much worse when we were teenagers, believe me!

Glad you're all fine. See you in a bit.

Anonymous said...

Glad none of you are at Trafalgar Square. From the twitter feed, it's been pretty calm until the kettling started.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sadly, like I said the other day, I'm sure there are always people willing to cause trouble at any mass gathering. Usually people who have nothing to do with the original cause of the gathering. And when politics are involved, it gets even murkier.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully the trouble is out of everyone's systems after tonight and Wednesday will be boring.

rsf

Greg Lestrade said...

For us, there's often more trouble away from the big events, just because everyone is stretched so thin elsewhere. So for all the hundreds of officers there tonight, and on Wednesday, the thin blue line will be even thinner elsewhere. And criminals know that.

I'm glad everyone had lovely days. This blog is such a nice place to go when you want a bit of happiness by proxy. :)

Small Hobbit said...

DW - you're back (although you've probably gone again by now). Hoping things aren't too bad for you *waves*

*waves at DW, too*

Yes, the blogs are a lovely place to visit when you're low.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hey DW - hope you're okay.

My bum hurts. And we're not done yet. Just taking a breather waiting for some others to catch up.

Desert Wanderer said...

Doing well, thanks.

My bum hurts. And we're not done yet. Just taking a breather

...I've obviously been away from the blogs for too long.

Small Hobbit said...

I was just thinking L's comment needed a DW response.

REReader said...

:D

Oh, we've missed you, DW!!

Greg Lestrade said...

DW - I put that comment in just for you - I braved a severely raised eyebrow from John for doing it, too!

Glad you're doing well. We've missed you around these parts.

Desert Wanderer said...

I'm touched, truly. Maybe not in the same way as you seem to be right now, but still...

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah! Well, happily to 4x4 we have was very comfortable for the ride home. ;)

Piplover said...

Glad to see you, DW! We've missed you!
