The redoubtable beast has had Pegasus pills

I definitely need a day off. And I haven't got one, but two :)

Tomorrow we're off to see Mycroft. Biscuits have been baked. John and Sherlock went out to one of the markets today, and returned with some gorgeous food, and Sherlock has a printing block of a Fiddler Crab. I asked, and John just told me it was far better than what we could have ended up with! (Things including a small trumpet of some sort. Bullet dodged!)

So...three years. Seems like forever. Yet also like no time at all. I can't believe that we've known the boys for three years. I can't believe how much they've changed - how much we've all changed! Can't believe we've gone from Professional Police Officer and Suspected Serial Killer, to Unprofessional Police Officer and Unlikely Suspect to Husband and...Husband ;)

But we have. And I really couldn't be happier with our lives together.

A year ago, just gone, Mum had her stroke. She's been to see the place we think she'll be living. She's...quiet, Nicky says. I imagine she's a bit scared. The nurse visiting her says she really does need to try and give up the booze and fags. I don't know, though. I don't know how cruel that is. I'm not actually sure how much point there is giving things up when you have so little to live for.

I hope she makes some friends.

Sherlock is involved in thinking about Christmas. Namely, all the things he wants for Christmas. Don't get me wrong, he wants to buy us things, too. Things he likes ;) Still, he's wonderfully enthusiastic about it all, which is nice, most of the time. Makes up for some of us not quite being in the Christmas spirit yet ;)

Poor old Mycroft is locked in a battle of wills with his Mum. It's a tough choice, I guess. Obviously she wants to protect the boys. But he's a young man now... hard to know how to play it, I guess.

The cricket's not going so well, eh? Or the rugby... oh dear. But Arsenal are doing okay ;)

Have a picture of a fellow officer I met today. Very handsome chap. I may have stroked his ears...

His name's Lewis.

(You don't think I'd dare stroke anyone's ears but John's, do you?)

Sounds like a lot of thinking has been going on. Lewis is lovely; is he a very tall horse? I ask because I saw some of the RCMP horses at our state fair once, and they were HUGE. I hope your mum is able to find something to like about her new place, and that Mycroft and Mrs. H are able to reach some mutually agreeable accord. My oldest is just a tad bit younger and it's hard to know how much freedom to give her, even without the additional concerns. I cannot believe how fast Yule is approaching. I'm so not ready.

John H. D. Watson said...

Lewis is a very handsome horse. I'm sure he's good at his job too.

Greg Lestrade said...

He tried to eat the Chief Super's epaulettes, so he's in disgrace.

Kestrel - Not particularly tall, I didn't think. But then I pretty much only ever see police horses - and army horses.

Joolz said...

3 years, it's wonderful to think you've been together that long and you're all as happy now as you've ever been.
Have a fun day with Mycroft tomorrow, I'm sure he'll like all his goodies and hopefully he can come to some kind of compromise with his mum. He'll certainly enjoy your bike ride if nothing else. :)

(DId you watch the new Doctor Who episode, John, wow, very exciting)

Small Hobbit said...

Lewis is indeed a handsome horse. Clearly the Chief Super shouldn't have got so close to him - how's a poor horse to know they weren't for eating.

And congratulations on the three years to you and your husband.

John H. D. Watson said...

By the way...if the boys haven't worn us out by Sunday evening, could I take you out for dinner?

Greg Lestrade said...

You most certainly could :)

John H. D. Watson said...

Excellent :)

Greg Lestrade said...

SH - he does look slightly worried! I think it was a photo op, and the Super's scrambled egg obviously looked too good to resist!

Danger - did you think I could refuse? ;) (Of course, I will want to stroke your ears.)

John H. D. Watson said...

You might've! What, public ear stroking? We'll get arrested for certain.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm sure I can talk us out of it. Might even feed you a sugar lump...

Sherlock wants to start making Christmas decorations. I've banned it until December... not sure how long we'll be able to hold out after that. Afterall, making doesn't mean putting up, right?

John H. D. Watson said...

True. And we have to get the tree too!

Greg Lestrade said...

We're getting the tree on a day off. If I go to work pre-tree choosing then I won't see our flat for a straight 24 hours...

John H. D. Watson said...

Do you want to go back to the place where we cut it down ourselves?

Unknown said...

Congrats on three years, lads! :)
I'm not ready for anything winter-related either. *shudder* been putting off shopping for an electric snow shovel, I'm in that much denial. But I know when the snow comes I'll really want to have it already in the mudroom. My shoulders are not what they used to be. Can't settle on a pic to use in a card, don't want to wear winter clothes, or put the stakes in the corners of the garden for the snow plow guy to navigate by.
sigh.

but honestly, who among us hasnt wanted to eat the chief super's epaulettes at least once in our lives?

Mycroft, I know you've been taking self-defense classes; have you considered asking your mother to stop by one of your sessions, at her convenience, and see where you've got to? I'm sure she's kept herself apprised of your progress, but perhaps it might serve as a more fruitful starting point for conversation.

He tried to eat the Chief Super's epaulettes, so he's in disgrace.

Well, he is a horse, and a horse is a horse, of course... ;D

Olli said...

...of course! (Greg, I always love your song lyrics as blog titles, but thanks for saving this one for RR and me.)

Has it only been three years? It seems like ages since I've been keeping up with your posts, and that your meeting was ancient history when I got here. But I suppose not. Happy, erm, anniversary!

(So, seen any good Triumphs lately?)

Greg Lestrade said...

...Sorry, I'm not sure I understand? Saving it for you?

Sherlock most definitely wants to go and fell our own mighty oak...err, Christmas Tree. A 'huge' one, apparently.

pandabob said...

3 years!! where did that time go?!!

I hope the four of you have a lovely time together today and that the weather is perfect for a good ride if that's what Mycroft still fancies doing :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Bit grey. If anyone spotted a small mushroom cloud on the horizon it was Sherlock exploding with indignation when someone offered their unwanted opinion that I was foolish and dangerous for letting a 'small child' ride on my bike with me.

REReader said...

L, I believe Olli was thanking you for not using the lyrics from this song: http://youtu.be/y_PZPpWTRTU so that the two of us could fill it in. ;)

Foolish busybody, did they not see that Sherlock was properly kitted out and all? Hmph.

Enjoy your time together today, the four of you!

pandabob said...

Don't you just love people who think they know best about what you do with your kids?!!

I hope Sherlock managed to calm down and enjoy the rest of the ride :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

You've never heard so much indignation in the sentence "I'm not small, I'm EIGHT".

John H. D. Watson said...

I wish I had a picture of his face. The outrage...

Greg Lestrade said...

It was amazing. At least he didn't call her stupid. Very restrained.

REReader said...

Very restrained.

Thus proving his point!

rsf said...

Three years! Wow! Congratulations.

I'm not surprised Sherlock is ready for Christmas. The weather has just turned wintry cold here, so I'm starting to think of it myself!

Greg Lestrade said...

He starts thinking about Christmas directly after his birthday, pretty much.

Small Hobbit said...

How huge can the tree be - assuming that it has to fit in the flat, along with the rest of you plus dogs, degus etc? Although I presume if you didn't have any presents that would leave a bit more space for the tree.

Greg Lestrade said...

Christ on a crab stick! What happened to Spurs? I hope Ttid is crying into his porridge.

REReader said...

Brrrrrr--it's 30F colder than Friday here! It was 57F Friday, and it's 28F in NYC now, and I was NOT expecting that when I went out!! (I'd've turned right around, but I need paper tape for my cataract surgery--second eye--tomorrow.)

kholly said...

Every year I lobby for not thinking about Christmas until after my birthday. And then I compromise and say how about after Thanksgiving (which this year is only the day before, but usually is a week before). But every year it still seems to start as soon as Halloween is over. You'd think I'd be old enough by not to realize I'm never going to win that.

pandabob said...

There's a certain added level of joy to Spurs having a bad day when it comes to thinking about Ttid isn't there Greg ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

There certainly is.

Mycroft has announced he will cook on Christmas day, for lunch. Sherlock actually hugged him. Poor kid has obviously been living in fear of John trying to roast something ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Mean...

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm certain Mycroft would welcome you as his sous chef...

Anon Without A Name said...

... or sensible? ;-p

John H. D. Watson said...

I wasn't going to roast anything! And of course I'd be happy to help chop things, or whatever he wants me to do.

Sherlock said...

John you can make mince pies with me because we can buy pastry or Lestrade can make it before and then we just have to cut them out and put in mincemeat and then put the lid on and brush them with egg and I know how to do that and then you have to put them in the oven and get them out because I'm not allowed.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. All right, we'll do that. Sounds good.

Sherlock said...

We have to have roast on Christmas Day and Mrs Hudson said she'd help too anyway because she likes it.

REReader said...

It sounds like you've been doing a lot if planning, Sherlock, you have it all worked out!

Greg Lestrade said...

Can't believe you're thinking about food after eating a burger bigger than your head for lunch.

Sherlock said...

Mycroft said you said we should still have a nice Christmas day AND he said John might want to go and see you at work so he wanted to cook and then if John wanted to take you some he said we could see Mrs Hudson or if Mummy wants to come and then we couldn't even open our presents until LATE when you were home.

rsf said...

Does anyone ever still play Snap Dragon at Christmas? It sounds like the sort of thing my mother would have cats about.

http://www.scrapalbum.com/vxp8.htm

Sherlock said...

I want to! But I bet John and Lestrade would cheat because they put out candles with their fingers and I'm not allowed to even try.

Greg Lestrade said...

That's not cheating, it's just reducing the risk of burning the flat down.

Greg Lestrade said...

Mycroft, you're a very thoughtful and kind young gentleman.

rsf said...

I can put out candles with my fingers, but only if I lick them first.

And yes, Mycroft, you are thoughtful. What shall you roast? I've been researching how people used to roast geese, and it seems like a lot of work.

Sherlock said...

Mrs Hudson says she hopes you're having a nice time and she made me an omlette for my dinner with mushrooms and cheese and ham in it too. What are you eating?

Joolz said...

I'm sure your dinner will be brilliant, Mycroft, with your helpers there to assist you too. Keeping your presents 'til later will make the excitement of the day just last longer as it is always the anticipation that is the best thing.

That game looks a bit lethal, rsf, I have to lick my fingers to put candles out too so I don't think I'd be very good reaching into a bowl of flames.
Here's something a bit less dangerous, but quite good fun. I got a 71 first then a 54, see how you all get on.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm having a lovely seafood pasta dish. Creamy and perfect. And some very nice wine.

John H. D. Watson said...

And he's speaking Italian to the waiter, on purpose.

rsf said...

That's neat, Joolz. I got a 27, but I suspect that it's because I'm on the good computer.

Greg Lestrade said...

When you say on purpose, you mean...as in I didn't do it accidentally? Or...just to wind you up?

John H. D. Watson said...

Well...I wouldn't say just to wind me up.

Sherlock said...

Are there octopuses in your pasta? What are you saying to the waiter?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, scallops, shrimps, squid and some crab.

Danger - not at all to wind you up. But you do smile indulgently... ;)

Unknown said...

Joolz, that color test is really interesting! I got a 14, and interestingly, the areas where my color discrimination were worst were clustered at the ends (pink and pinky-purple) and near the middle (between blue and green). Interesting to me because those are the colors I really dislike and won't wear. I have one barn-red tshirt which I only like because it's from Harvest Ale, and while I like blue, and green, I detest that whole in-between teal range.

Roasting things is not actually that difficult, it's mostly about the basting. The big secret to roasting a chicken is putting a piece of cheesecloth across the top so the basting juices are held there to keep the meat moist. Pot roast in the crock pot is even easier, and soooooo delish. This is making me hungry.

Have a lovely anniversary date! :)

Z said...

I got a 3 on the test, which is funny because my family thinks I'm awful at this. I always do really well on hue differentiation tests, but apparently I call colors the wrong names so they think I must be seeing them badly, not just mislabeling. Things I call purple everyone else calls blue, apparently. But as the one who aces the color vision tests, I think I should get to decide!

Greg Lestrade said...

I've had a great time.

Now to sneak into Sherlock's room to check on him (because he knows if we don't, by leaving things we will disturb) without waking the beast (he attempts to leave things which will wake him, so he can quiz us and explain his distaste at our soppiness.)

And then, to bed, with my gorgeous and slightly drunk husband.

REReader said...

Sounds like an eminently successful dinner, then. :)

G'night!

John H. D. Watson said...

only very slightly

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, me too. Just the right amount.

REReader said...

Hey, Joolz, I got a 19 on your color test, which I think is pretty good considering I have a cataract in one eye and a lens implant in the other! (It will be interesting to test myself again in a few weeks, once the new implant has settled in.) I hope you don't mind, I'm going to "borrow" it for my blog... :)

Kestrel337 said...

Thanks for the color test, Joolz. I got an 8. L, I hope you guys managed to check on Sherlock without waking him up. But how sweet, really, that you do it and he knows you do.

ro said...

Wow, three years! Happy meet-a-versary!

Good luck with your surgery, RR. Hope it goes well.

Joolz, that test made me really cranky to do, even though I scored relatively well! (22) It seems I have an innate hatred for ordering colours ... not something I would ever have thought I would have discovered about myself! Mind you, I think I'd rather order colours than stick my hand into a flaming bowl of fruit.

I've had my window open this afternoon, and the smell of the pine tree outside has been making it feel really Christmassy. For some reason, this has made me really happy today, although I'm not normally a Christmas fan (too damn hot!)

pandabob said...

I always feel a great temptation to stay in bed and pretend its not a school day on a day when I have no where I have to be but I guess Sherlock didn't provide you with the option of a lie in never mind anything else today ;-)

I hope you're both making the most of your day together :-)

REReader said...

Thank you, ro! On my way now.

Have a good day, all!

Greg Lestrade said...

Hope it goes well RR.

We were forced out of bed, Anonybob. But have made the most of the day since then ;)

There is talk of running somewhere. Only talk so far... Might run to the school later.

Small Hobbit said...

All the best RR!

pandabob said...

I'm glad you've made the most of your time together Greg ;-)

I hope you've had a good day at school Sherlock :-)

Joolz said...

Hope everyone has had a fun day, have you been out and about today.

The colour thing was fun wasn't it, I was quite pleased with my 54, but now feel like I ought to try a bit harder with you all getting such amazing scores. :)

Good luck, RR, hope everything went well and you have a quick recovery.

Greg Lestrade said...

I got 53. I got a bit bored at the end, to be honest, just started chucking the colours about quite fast. Might see if I can do better!

REReader said...

Just home--so far so good. Thanks, all!

I do want to try the color test again in a few days--and on a different computer. Test the variables!

Anonymous said...

I just got a zero on the colour test. I'm gobsmacked, I would usually consider that I have no colour sense but apparently you don't need to know what goes with what to put colours in order!

Lancs. Anon

Sherlock said...

I got zero.

Greg Lestrade said...

You did. eventually. ;)

White ribbon day today, folks. Lots of talk in the police force, about trying to prevent domestic violence. Not always successful, sadly. A very difficult subject.

Sherlock said...

Look at this caterpillar! http://vitaminl.tv/video/445

Anonymous said...

Wow! The biggest caterpillar I've ever seen was only about half that size, and we thought it was huge.

I'm not trying the color test again. My score keeps getting worse.

rsf

John H. D. Watson said...

39 for me. I also lost patience near the...I'd like to say end, but it was more like the middle.

Greg Lestrade said...

Whereas Sherlock painstakingly did every one multiple times until he got zero :) Ah, the difference in personalities...

REReader said...

That caterpillar is quite amazing. And HUGE.

And good for you, trying until you got a 0, Sherlock--that's good training for your color sense, that is. (And I'll have to try to do better once I can see out of both eyes again.)

pandabob said...

I got 8 and now I have headache from looking at it too hard ;-)

Well done on your zero Sherlock.

Joolz said...

Well done Sherlock and Lancs Anon for getting a 0, however long it took. Major skills. I've got 38 twice now so I think I'm going to have to call it quits there and declare that my best shot as I get fed up once I get them so far. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Everything turns stripey as I look at it on that test. The tiles don't look a solid colour for me, but different colours top, bottom and middle. I don't know how anyone looks at it for long without going mad!

Anonymous said...

I've found that as well, the top of each square was a markedly different colour on my laptop. Also the lightish colours on a black background make my eyes go weird

Lancs. Anon

Greg Lestrade said...

Got 23 that time, and the ones I got wrong were in a completely different part of the colour range than last time. (same computer). And I had to take a break between doing each one.

Small Hobbit said...

I'm afraid I took one look and thought I couldn't be bothered. With a son who is colour blind I know how much of a hassle it can be.

Unknown said...

I just realized one of the things I liked about the color test was the way it was scored, with the perfect score being a 0. That was what my dad used to do when I was a kid, if you got something totally right, whatever it was, he'd cry out "Zero!" in this delighted tone. Gosh, I haven't thought about that in a while! :)

I had better luck in a dark room with all the light coming from the computer. Under florescent lights at work the test made my eyes hurt.

Kestrel337 said...

My daughter who is dyslexic really struggled with it, she said the tiles kept dancing around. My middle daughter, the one who wears tie dye jeans with mismatched polka dot/striped socks and a zebra print hoody, scored 99. Hmmmm....

Best wishes for a speedy healing, RR!

Kira said...

So, the test secret is not with a migraine?

Greg Lestrade said...

There's no way i could even have looked at that with a migraine!

Unknown said...

I got my color test score down to 11, still the teal area that I mess up. huh.
I did also notice, after staring at it for a while, if I angled my head at all, the afterimage of the colored and black areas definitely affected the way the whole thing looked.
well, time to face the day here, we did get a dusting of snow overnight and the weather is going to get worse before it gets better.
