Home, Holmeses and Horrible weather.

There's a lot to be said for waking up in your own bed, wrapped up in your own boyfriend, happy in your own city.

Even if you are woken up by a Sherlock travelling at high velocity.

But even that was kind of nice.

We had pancakes for breakfast, with fruit in them, and watched as the rain varied between hard and harder...with occasional moments looking as if it may clear up...before raining again. So baking was done, stories told, pictures drawn, pretend arrests made, some attempts at further dog training done (sadly Sherlock's wish to train them to bring him food keep getting thwarted by them eating everything that comes near them).

Still, it was just lovely being with everyone. We did get out with the dogs this afternoon - although we didn't let them off the leads, because of the massive potential for excessive mud rolling and general chaos. And the lack of a hose to wash them down with afterward.

And tonight...Mrs H is going to mind the boys, and Danger is letting me cook for him, at my place, to get a bit of time alone.

I'm thinking pork chops, blue cheese and apple sauce, veg and probably mash, or crushed and roasted spuds. Sound okay, Danger? You get to choose dessert...

It does not sound okay, it sounds amazing. You're definitely some sort of domestic deity, no maybes about it.

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen Sherlock?

I will be home in my own bed by the end of the week. I hope it's as lovely as yours sounds (although I don't have a Danger to wrap up with). Enjoy your dinner together. You two definitely deserve it. And other things...

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah? And I'm really not. It's just what we have. And it's quick. Much as I like cooking, I may be...distracted by you.

So now you have to pick dessert and a movie you're going to distract me through. So nothing I actually want to watch.

John H. D. Watson said...

Wasn't sure if you meant dessert or...dessert. Dunno, something fruity? We have raspberries.

Ha, thanks for warning me ahead of time you're going to ignore it. Someday we're going to get through Hot Fuzzy, I swear.

John H. D. Watson said...

...Hot Fuzz. Not Hot Fuzzy. That would be a different film entirely.

Trills said...

I hate to distract you from your evening, Greg (is it actually ok to call you Greg, the other readers made me do it) but have you see the news just now?

Anonymous said...

Have fun watching the film tonight, guys or at least ...

And Lestrade, do make sure you watch the German MotoGP at some point.

Greg Lestrade said...

By dessert I mean whatever you choose to make it mean... It could be dessert, or dessert...

I won't be meaning to ignore it, but I can't believe they'll ever make a film that I want to watch enough not to be distracted by you.

Hot Fuzzy sounds like some odd documentary on 70s porn.

Aww, sounds like you guys have a lovely evening planned :-)

It would be great if you could post some of the boys' drawings sometime (it's it both of them that produce pictures, or just Sherlock?).

Wasn't sure if you meant dessert or...dessert

I'm guessing he meant both :-p

Lestrade - not to bring too much reality crashing into your weekend, but have you seen the latest news? Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson has resigned. Story on the BBC, apparently

Greg Lestrade said...

Trills - it's fine to call me Lestrade, Greg, Orio, Oi You, Detective Inspector, Your highness, whatever. And...which news! i've seen some news today...saw Brooks has been arrested and Stephenson has quit.

SmallHobbit - thanks! And yeah, I meant to watch it, but didn't. i will do. Sadly I don't think Danger will think it suitable for date night... I hear there was a bit of a ding dong between Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Stoner?

John H. D. Watson said...

We can watch it if you want to, but I don't promise not to distract you from it, so you might want to wait.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah, yeah, I'll wait.

I will have to watch the news at some point, just to find out what I'll be walking into tomorrow now Stephenson has gone. Just a little bit more chaos to throw onto the Met's ever growing pile.

Anonymous said...

Lestrade - really good racing - just don't let John distract you on the final lap. So probably best to wait.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hah, fairly certain he'd distract me long before the final lap!! Want to try and catch up with a bit of the tour de France too - got quite into that when I was away.

Sherlock, you should look at this - just spotted it on the Beeb.

John H. D. Watson said...

Well, that's disturbing to look at.

Sherlock said...

BEES! How do they get them to stay on? Are they covered in honey?

Greg Lestrade said...

I think they attract them with a queen bee. No idea how they persuade them to stay. I'm sure you could look it up.

I think it might be quite nice to be covered in bees. Like a big hug.

John H. D. Watson said...

You can't even see his face! I'm sure that can't be safe.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'll have to have a big hug from you then. Dinner will be ready any moment. Might need to wash the plates - probably a bit dusty. Like most things in this place.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can do that. Champagne with dinner or after?

Greg Lestrade said...

After, I think? What do you think?

John H. D. Watson said...

After's good, yeah. With dessert.

Greg Lestrade said...

If you scratch about in the wine rack there may even be a bottle of dessert wine somewhere. Could stick it in the freezer, chill it down.

John H. D. Watson said...

All right. Never had that before. Is it labeled dessert wine or something helpful like that?

Greg Lestrade said...

Possibly...but not in English. It's a half size bottle.

John H. D. Watson said...

Aha, got it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hopefully you'll like it. I think it's one of life's luxuries.

Tink said...

Lots of hugs for you both! Hope you enjoy your evening!

(Greg, see John's blog for details on my visit! It went wonderfully!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks, Tink! Glad to hear it.

Like the wine, Danger? Ready for champagne and second dessert?

John H. D. Watson said...

By all means.

Greg Lestrade said...

Excellent.

Night, all. Pleasant dreams.

Greg Lestrade said...

Aaaaaaaand good morning all.

Life is clearly horribly unfair when I have to leave a warm sleepy bed full of Danger to go to work.

Tink said...

You poor guy. Make sure to subtly remind your super of Sherlock's pleasure at having you home.

And just think! You get a not-so-sleepy bed full of John when you get home tonight :D Something to look forward to.

I have not gone to bed yet because I am still vibrating with energy from this weekend. I may have to force my assistant to actually *work* tomorrow (it's not today! I haven't slept yet!) while I am busy being braindead.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm so glad it went well for you. I see that Nicky has commented too.

And today will mainly be me catching up on everything, I expect. So not too bad.

Tink said...

That's because Nicky is a sister who knows what's what!

It really was kind of horrendously cheesy and incredibly sappy, our reunion I mean. I think we drank coffee by the pot not just to stay awake but to soothe our throats because I don't think we stopped talking all day. Seriously, we'd tucked ourselves to bed and we were still sleepily mumbling things at each other. Well. Half sentences. Several things could have been going on. 1. We were completing them for each other in our heads and responding. 2. We were too tired to know what the hell we were talking about but also too tired to realise it. 3. We had temporarily become telepathic due to that much caffeine ingestion and being twins.

Any of those three is likely really.

My assistant is awful. She faffs off at the worst times and then looks put upon when I ask her to do anything with the kids. But tomorrow she's not going to have a choice. She can't complain either or I will tell our boss about her being on the phone 3/4 of the day and the other dozen or so rules she breaks on a semi regular basis. Where I am a paragon of virtue (laugh it up :P ) whom the upper management loves... Mmmm. Power. Tastes good with ice cream!

Yay for you not having too taxing of a day hopefully! I shall hold my thumbs for you.

Life seems horribly unfair when you have to do pretty much anything at twenty to six in the morning, it's still the middle of the night for goodness sake!

I've never managed to bring myself to drink dessert wine; I'm strictly a crisp dry white kind of person. Is it worth it? I'm trying to think how champagne would taste after drinking something sweet, and not managing to come up with anything good.

Anyway, very glad you two managed to have a yourselves a good evening together. Nothing quite like being able to spend some time just being together after an absence, is there?

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - I'm used to it, I don't really mind. And I was still in bed when I wrote that. And for some time afterward (Danger can be very persuasive).

I love dessert wine - with the right dessert. But yeah, we had to wait a bit, and cleanse our palettes with water and strawberries - before drinking the champagne. But we weren't in a rush!

Mazarin221b said...

Here's a little dessert thing for you, since you like strawberries so well: dip strawberries in dessert or other sweet wine, and then roll them in plain sugar.

So delicious.

Also - I was up at 5:30 this morning, too, L. I'm "used to it," but it's still painful!

Greg Lestrade said...

Mazarin - sounds lovely! And I should get out of the habit of getting up so early, really. It's unnecessary now.

John H. D. Watson said...

I agree. A habit of lying about in bed with me sounds much better.

Tink said...

I am back after falling unconscious for several hours!

You're used to getting up that early and it's going to be a hard habit to break. I get up at the same time every day no matter how late I went to bed too. But now you have a John to wrap around when you decide to go back to sleep! Perhaps that will help.

I have coffee, have called in to work as a victim of fratricide, sent a text to my assistant letting her know where the 'Tink is absent what the hell do I do?' folder is, and a comfy couch. :D So. How's work?

(Hi Sally!)

Greg Lestrade said...

Danger - it does. You'll have to train me.

Tink - glad you've taken the day off to recover!

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, work is...a but hard. Meeting relatives. Never nice for anyone involved.

Anon Without A Name said...

I don't think I could ever get used to getting up early. tried it for decades and it still never stuck. Definite night-owl, me.

You've intrigued me with the dessert wine, but I think the idea of champagne and strawberries wins it :-)

Mascerated strawberries is worth trying. Very very good way of making use of a glut of summer strawberries, and very very nice added to the wine of your choice. All you need are -
a bowl of strawberries, sliced thickly
tablespoon of vinegar
tablespoon of sugar
generous twist of black pepper

This does not taste vinegary, never fear. The vinegar makes the juices run and makes the strawberries even sweeter. Combine the ingredients, refrigerate, stir after about five minutes, then use as needed. You'll get a couple of extra days fridge life out of fresh berries this way. You can mascerate lots of fresh, in season fruits. Berries are great, but you can do it to just about any fruit you can think of.
