Back to life, back to reality

Feel like I've barely seen John and Sherlock since getting back! I hate it. Well, that's not true. It's my job and I love it, but it's such a wrench! I just had such a great time with them all, and now I'm back in the worst bits of London and feel like I only see them to eat and sleep, if that.

I'm sure I'm not taking half the information Sherlock's been telling me in. He seems very content playing with the degus though, which is nice. Guess he missed them a lot.

So, because all I want to do is be back there - more pictures!

I took this one to remind myself of the look on John's face when I read him the Latin. I'm sure you can all guess what my translation of 'erectam gloriae etposteritati' was...

It's inside the courtyard of the palace there.

And here are some lovely caves. Weird stalag...on the wall thingy. Like fabric. I think this is the one they call the organ pipes.

It's just amazing to think this has all been slowly created over a million and a half years. About 1mm per year, the biggest ones are growing... The smallest spaghetti stalagtites have been there for over a hundred thousand years... Completely mad to think about.

Got news today that my bike should be ready by the weekend! Have almost stopped starting conversations in Italian, too. It's probably a good thing.

Right, back to paperwork.

Back to reality is horrid isn't it. My shortones are back at nursery and school this week and I'm missing them lots after a week of fun. I hope you manage a rest day soon then you pretend its holiday again :-)

good luck with the paperwork.

1mm a year is amazing to think about.

So when you get your bike, are you going to take that picture of it off the fridge...? ;)

Sherlock is a very good degu caretaker, so I bet they missed him, too. :) (That's not meant to be funny, I really do think that. And it's lovely that he shares them to make people feel better.)

It always stuns me, the age of rock formations...those do not exist on a human-sized time-scale, and yet you they are right here, where you can see and touch them. I find it a bit mind-blowing. (Not that I'm saying you should go around handling million-year-old stalagtites and maybe damaging them, but they are right here, on earth, where you could.)

Danger - might put one of my actual bike on the fridge, instead of the stock image. Just to remind myself what I'm looking for in the parking space...

Discovered on holiday that one of my cousins is now also a detective. Clearly runs in the family.

Sensible.

Did I meet that one? (I'm sorry, there were a lot.)

Greg Lestrade said...

You did. Fio - last I knew she worked in a civilian role. Now she's a detective. But policing in Italy is much much more complex than here - lots of different types of police there.

She's the one who rides the big black and silver motorbike.

Anyone would think we were related. :)

Oh, of course! Nice woman. Nice bike, too.

Those pictures are amazing! It makes me want to visit Italy even more!

Greg Lestrade said...

She is great. We've always got along well.

Pip lover - yes, go! :)

(No, can't sleep.)

I'm sorry you're not able to sleep, L.

Let us know if you want distracting--or someone to be boring at you. :) (And I really hope you've already managed to drop off and don't see this til morning.)

Erectam gloriae....

...er... right. I'm sure it's something very... encouraging. Uplifting, as it were.

:D

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, slept eventually. Just thinking about my current case too much probably.

You have my sympathy. Three o'clock in the morning isn't a fun time to be thinking about work unless you're taking a night shift. I hope the thinking helped you get somewhere though!

Greg Lestrade said...

A bit, yeah.

Sorry John, going to be late back - still have a million things to do.

Fio wanted to be in the army when she was little. Next time we go I'll encourage her to practice her English on you :)

John H. D. Watson said...

It's all right, love. I hope your case is going reasonably well.

She did a bit when we were there...you translated it into Italian for me. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

I didnt really...did I?

John H. D. Watson said...

Only about a sentence, and then you stopped and got a very confused look on your face.

Greg Lestrade said...

My usual look then.

You have your first shift tomorrow, right John? Best of luck!

How's everyone's evening been?

Greg Lestrade said...

Just got home. Completely wrecking my plan to make John a nice pre-first-day dinner. He'll have to have a post-first-day dinner tomorrow instead.

I'm sure John'll love having something to look forward to after his first day :-)

Good luck with work John, not that I think you need luck so maybe I should say enjoy tomorrow instead :-)

Enjoy what's left of your evening now you're home Greg :-)
