Don't you walk through my words, You got to show some respect

Day One of 'not doing anything' and we've...managed to do quite a lot, actually. But all under medical supervision! I promise :)

Yesterday, we went calling on a bloke, to have a chat. He 'wasn't in', but his wife was. So, as we stood in the kitchen of the house, talking to her, fairly amicably, really...he crept up on us and decided to try and hit my head for six. Luckily his swing was severely compromised by the wall. But I did see stars.

He'll be seeing the inside of a cell for a while.

Anyway, hospital was reasonably swift, for once, and once my scalp was wrestled around and put back in the right place, I was packed off home to John, complete with nice thick blue plastic stitches holding me together :)

Last night, because I couldn't sleep (having slept half the afternoon), I was reading an article on the various sentencing differences between the US and the UK. In the UK, right now, there are about 50 or so people serving a whole life sentence. In the US, there's 40,000. Plus another 100,000 who may one day be eligible for parole - but that doesn't necessarily mean release. And there isn't even a figure for people serving sentences for, say, 200 years.

Just makes you think, doesn't it? Anyway - it wasn't work! Just reading around work. Mycroft asked me if I might ever want to study for a degree or something. I don't know...feel like it might not be so interesting when I have to do it.

Sherlock was very quiet when we got him back last night. We called Mycroft, and Sherlock had another chat with him, too, from under a cushion. It's so hard, seeing them sad and knowing there's nothing to be done about it. All you want to do is make everything better.

Sherlock's perked up a bit today. He says he knows he can talk to us if he wants, or email Mycroft or his mum.

Anyway - both of you - you know John and I would be happy to do anything we possibly can to help you.

But, really, I'm avoiding talking about our big news here...

Today we found, and provisionally booked, a wedding venue. It's...well, we both felt like it was right. Nothing too...well, not too anything. Just right. So.

Which...makes everything seem...incredibly real. And soon. And...real. And soon! :)

That is just about the perfect use of an enforced day off!! yay for your wedding :-)

I'm glad Sherlock is seeming a bit brighter tonight :-)

Yeah, well, we keep looking at places online, and for ages now there've been places on a list on the fridge, and sometimes one gets crossed out, and sometimes one gets added...and the ones that have survived all of that, we decided we needed to go and see! So we did. And there are still a few we haven't seen, but...well, this one just felt right. I can see us in there.

I'm torn between excitement and nerves! :)

That really is a good way to spend a sick day, and excited nerves would be about par for the course!

The two of you are so good with Mycroft and Sherlock, I can only guess how much of a relief it must be for their mother to have them with you.

I think you'll swing between one and the other over and over again until the day after the wedding :-)

Weddings are exciting especially weddings of lovely people :-)

A very good use of the day, I think. I know it's only one thing, but it feels like massive progress.

Greg Lestrade said...

It is massive! It's a date - if we do decide it's definitely the one. And a date and a venue means we can get the licence... and then, you know, no matter what happens, we can get married. Doesn't matter if we don't do anything else...we'll have a licence, so even if we have to get married in our pyjamas with witnesses dragged off the street, we can still get married!

John H. D. Watson said...

I can see us doing that actually...after some sort of police or Sherlock related emergency... ;)

But you're absolutely right, and it does feel much more real now. It's wonderful.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh God, don't say that...Can't be having a mad bike ride across London to burst into the room with everyone waiting, only just in time... but yes, knowing our life you'll be delayed saving someone's life on the street and I'll get held hostage in a prison riot or something ridiculous.

That's great news. The perfect way to use some forced rest and make you feel better too.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - or helicopters. There might be helicopters.

Greg Lestrade said...

Or beasts, roaming the streets, terrorising citizens...

Love you.

John H. D. Watson said...

I love you too. We're getting married! Even if there are beasts AND helicopters.

Greg Lestrade said...

The beasts can carry flowers (or eat them), the helicopters can take us off on honeymoon. Everything will be fine, as long as you, me, and the registrar gets there.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sounds perfectly normal for us. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

It does...

I'm...thinking maybe we could order our rings, soon? I mean, I'm fairly sure what I want. I mean, in a general way. Unless you want matching ones? In which case...we'll have to talk :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I do want matching ones, but I'm pretty sure I'll like anything you pick out.

Sherlock and Mycroft are lucky to have you two in their lives, and knowing there are people you love and trust who are always willing to listen is a big help always.

Oh, congratulations! A venue and date are big items off any wedding checklist, and after all, you need to know where and when for making most of the other decisions--and they narrow those decisions down to way more manageable. (I am remembering my siblings' weddings and it really did!)

(And I'm sure Mrs Holmes would be able to arrange helicopters if needed... ;D)

Greg Lestrade said...

Something like this? Or we could splash out and get the platinum ones...

John H. D. Watson said...

I like it. :) I think...yeah, maybe the platinum? I don't really have a reason for that though.

Greg Lestrade said...

Me neither. Except, you know, it's going to be on my finger, reminding me of the most precious thing in my life. And it'll be the last one I ever buy - I hope!

John H. D. Watson said...

Mm, yes. There is that. :) I hope it'll be the last one too - my only one. Is that the one we're going with? We could order it right now...

Greg Lestrade said...

It...yeah, we could, couldn't we? I mean...if you know your ring size? And...

should I get hit around the head more often? It seems to have kickstarted some sort of organising marathon!

pandabob said...

no you shouldn't Greg but I'm glad you're getting organised and are both so excited about it :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

You should just have enforced time off from work more often, without getting hit on the head. ;)

Kestrel337 said...

That's the perfect way to pick a venue, I think. Research, thinky time, viewing, then go with your gut. There doesn't need to be any reason other than "this is the place", really.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha - I do try to have time off work. It just always gets filled up with other things!

John H. D. Watson said...

It's probably why this worked so well actually - getting hit on the head may be a key factor. But please try not to do it again anyway! And yes, pretty sure I know my ring size.

Greg Lestrade said...

I shall try not to put my head in the path of any more cricket bats.

Right then...shall we? I mean, as they're coming from overseas, I want to really really be sure they're here on time, or you're getting one of these on the day:

John H. D. Watson said...

In that case, there's not a moment to lose!

Greg Lestrade said...

...You would definitely be taking the substitute one OFF for our wedding night, if these don't arrive. Ouch.

John H. D. Watson said...

We'd better both hope they arrive in time then...

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah :)

I've definitely moved to 'excited' currently. Got a headrush when I stood up just now. Unless that's still concussion...but I'll blame it on your making me excited ;)

John H. D. Watson said...

Definitely excited as well.

Might be time to put you and your head to bed though.

Greg Lestrade said...

anything you say, Doc. Love you :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I love you too.

(we're getting married!)

Greg Lestrade said...

We really really are. Soon! :)

YAY! *tosses some confetti* :)

Piplover said...

I'm glad you're feeling better, L, and that the wedding plans are coming together. You guys deserve all the happiness!

Greg Lestrade said...

Mmm, had a lazy morning, now have to go and do some shopping and venue-looking. Sherlock requires new rosin for his violin. Chances of me leaving that music shop without something guitar related? Slim.

Tina said...

Great news about the wedding-venue, and about the rings!
Hope you´re feeling better today - and that the headrush really was just you beeing excited.

pandabob said...

I'd like to think that Sherlock's request for rosin was just his way of telling you to treat yourself ;-)

Enjoy the rest of your day :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Were eating delicious olives, artichoke hearts, cheese and bread in the park :)

REReader said...

Okay, that is seriously very romantic. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Would be more romantic if the sun was shining, instead of threatening grey clouds! But very nice to have the time to enjoy ourselves.
