Say you'll be all right come tomorrow, But tomorrow might not be here for you

Had a bit of a shit day. It was all going fine until i got asked to go down to a crime scene - not my case, glad to say - and look at something. Sometimes I'd rather not have 'expertise'.

Anyway, it was just a smell. Brought back some really strong memories. Ones I'd really rather not remember. I mean, I carried on and did everything but...just, I don't know. Left me feeling really off. Coffee with John made me feel better. Sometimes just need reminding about here and now.

In happier news, when I was in with SOCO earlier they'd finished with a little item I'd asked to have, providing it wasn't needed for the case...

I thought Sherlock would like it. I know what animal it belongs to, but he hasn't figured it out yet.

My not-a-cactus, Mr Cactus, who grew that huge long flower last year, has sprouted two flower stems about a foot long while we were away in Italy! It clearly likes this flat.

Read an interesting article about Mussolini's fascist regime sending gay Italian men to prison on an island today. Apparently we gay guys were damaging the idea that Italian men are all complete stallions...as if.

We didn't get any trouble when we were there. It was actually better than I thought. Quite a few people talked about us - reasonably openly, so I could hear - quite a lot of them weren't exactly polite. I assume they didn't think either of us would understand, as we were speaking English. But...you know, it's easier to ignore, when you know the person you love can't hear it.

So here's a photo from the city. The bottom paragraph is the link.

My Nonna used to rave about Mussolini. She thought he was great.

unwanted expertise are a pain sometimes :-( I'm sorry you had a less than great day but I hope you were able to help a little with whatever it was. Making use of unwanted expertise to help others might just, possibly, make them worth having (maybe)

Once again though I'm glad you have your boys to remind you of the good that exists in your life and how much you deserve to have it :-)

Thanks. And the expertise aren't unwanted, exactly - just the situation they got me in today. I dunno. Just hate feeling like people can tell there's something wrong, when I'm trying to be professional, you know? I mean, they probably can't...but...yeah.

I'm 99.9% sure that no one can tell you ever have a problem with anything because professional really does seem to be your thing but I get what you mean about worrying about it.

Is the evening being as relaxing as you would like? has Sherlock figured it out or is he still working away on it?

As anonybob said, because you're aware of how you're feeling you think everyone will notice, whereas in reality, they wouldn't unless they knew you really well.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah - well, they were all too polite to say anything even if they noticed :)

And I've spent the evening wrapped in John.

Sherlock wants you all to know, by the way, that he worked out it was a fox skull.

It was a very nice evening. And I agree that probably no one who didn't know you well would've noticed anything off.

The fox skull was interesting...and kept Sherlock occupied for hours!

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, and he can take it to school.

Thanks for...just being there and not asking too many questions. Glad it's not a smell I come accross every day. It really...threw me back.

John H. D. Watson said...

Oh, good point. And it can keep his class occupied for a while too - a very useful fox indeed.

Anytime, love. I'm sorry it brought back bad memories for you.

I'm sorry you had that experience today, L. IIRC, smell is processed in the most primal part of the brain, so it bypasses reasoning and can bring up the strongest memories--goes straight for the gut, as it were. But I agree that probably no one noticed. People mostly don't notice that sort of thing, especially if they are focused on something specific, like a crime scene.

John, are you looking forward to your second shift tomorrow night? :)
Sherlock, if you see this in the morning--good job figuring out what that skull was from, it definitely is not obviously a fox!

L, that was a wonderful gift! I have to know, though--how on earth did SOCO end up with a fox skull in the first place?

Yes, yes, yes.

Kudos to Sherlock on the fox skull! He'll be a stunning detective one day, I can tell already.

I have a couple scents that remind me so strongly of my ex that I will get very close to panic attacks. I had to get up and leave a meeting once because of a cologne smell... I can only imagine what crime scene + memory scents might do to someone. It's a good thing you're so well trained.

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I guess it was the scene and the smell - someone died during...well, in bed. Their own bed, so obvusly there's someone else we need to find. And it might just be accidental and the other person panicked. We just don't know yet. But the whole room just stank of poppers. It's a very...distinctive smell.

Smells are pretty much the 'best' trigger for taking a person back to good or bad times. For me it's anything approaching rancid butter, my grandma in her lunacy used to butter things, I can go from perfectly fine to gibbering wreck in no time flat with that smell.

I hope today is better for you, L.

How did Sherlock determine the species of his skull? And what has he done with the skull now that he knows what it is?

pandabob said...

How's today going Greg? Lots of progress with lots of things I hope :-)

How are you doing John?

Enjoy your afternoon :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Just leaving the yard for my half day, off to meet John :)

pandabob said...

Have fun ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thanks.

Sherlock has the skull with him at school today. I imagine it will thenn go on a shelf...

Unbelievably the sun is out on my afternoon off! We're in the park with ice cream. First sunny day since Italy!

Woo!

And is the skull in the park, too? :)
