Wedding bells...

Got called out to a stabbing last night. Meant to do a post, but I was way too busy. Loads of drunk people brawling, screaming, chaos. My least favourite things. We had to warn three different people that we'd do them for sexual assault if they kept touching us.

Anyway, finally got some sort of order and statements being taken - all horribly unreliable.

Was feeling bad about the whole Winbledon thing with John too. Although its pouring with rain right now, which is helping! Two balls in the cricket yesterday... British summer, yeah!

Sherlock has a new book. Which he hasn't taken to school because I don't think it's suitable.

We cleaned Mtcrofts room a bit yesterday. Found a half eaten jam sandwich in there. Sherlock says it was left by a burglar. I said I'd get it DNA tested, and we'd all need to be swabbed for that, so they could exclude us. He went quiet. Then said he didn't think we should bother as they didn't steal anything important, because it was Mycroft's boring room...

Looking forward to having Mycroft back with us - and for so long!

What an interesting night you had ;-)

I hope you've slept a bit and that you find something to do today that doesn't end up with you wet!

Mycroft coming home is the real start of summer I think, I'm sure we'll have sun enough to crack the flags once he's home ;-)

Interesting. Is Sherlock going in there to borrow stuff, or is he trying to be near Mycroft's stuff because he misses him? Or, typical little brother, perhaps both.

Hope you all are having a good day. :)

Drunk people make me wary at the best of times, like volcanoes that are making grumbling noises. Violent drunk people make me glad there are cops I can call! But I expect you don't much enjoy getting called. It must be hard constantly seeing people at their worst.

Poor Sherlock -- sometimes knowing a great deal about forensics must make life awkward.

It'll be great to have Mycroft back with us. :)

Don't feel bad, it's my own fault. I should've checked sooner. The way it's going this year, everyone in the top twenty will be out or injured by the quarters anyway...

Wells - we think both. He borrows books. But generally maintains Mycroft's stuff is boring or rubbish :)

RSF - I don't enjoy drunk people who think you should enjoy being groped, no.

But I got home to go back to bed, and after the school run a lovely cuddly doctor joined me, making for a very nice warm cuddly morning!

Ella, not wells...

Sober people who think you should be groped while trying to work aren't so great either. But drunks can be their own special brand of annoying.

(Who goes from violent drunken brawl to groping/hitting on the cops who break it up?)

-Ella on her phone

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, sober people are maybe worse. I'm sure a few people this morning are regretting their actions.

And in answer - people who think other people will be arrested and that somehow feeling us up will make us forgive and forget, in return for some sexual favours? I don't know. Logic didn't come into it.

rsf said...

Gropers are annoying whatever their level of sobriety! (Well, except when it's mutual, consensual groping, which should have a different word.)

Siblings' books were considered fair game in my house, as long as you a) washed your hands first, b) didn't eat sticky things while you were reading c) chose books which weren't being read by the sibling and d) put them back when you were done.

Don't know sherlock's motivations, but when I was his age and my sisters were away at uni being near their stuff made me feel like I was near them.

Greg Lestrade said...

It's not just annoying.

But I really didn't want to start arresting people, we had enough to do. And threatening arrest just leads to innuendo anyway.

Just had a good hot shower once I was home.

I think Sherlock likes sneaking into Mycroft's room when he misses him. But of course he won't admit to that :) I think it's nice though.

At least drunken gropers are easier to dismiss. Much as I hate the "I was drunk and am not responsible for my actions" excuse, you can partially attribute it to poor impulse and logic control. Sober gropers are just sinister and violating. (And I'm really glad I don't have to take the NYC subway anymore.)

Anonymous said...

I feel like I've contradicted myself somewhere along the way. This is what I get for trying to create a metric correlating sobriety and sexual assault early in the morning. Time to think about something else.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - I know exactly what you mean. Same reason I said sober groupers were maybe worse up above. Drunkeness isn't an excuse, but sober is more planned and bold and just...different.

Anyway, yeah.

So this tennis...who do we want through to the next round? And when do we know if they are? And when is the next round??

REReader said...

Ugh, gropers. It's just so....slimy. At best.

Yes, I think it is, too. :)

Tennis! When I was a kid I wanted to be one of the kids who crouches next to the net and runs after stray balls. My brother wanted to be Bjorne Borg.

Heh, Ella--I was a McEnroe fan! :)

Anonymous said...

McEnroe was fun to watch because eventually he gets angry and throws things.

-Ella

REReader said...

Yeah!

And also, when he settled down and really played he was flat out amazing. I once saw him play doubles at the US Open, and it was just beautiful--they used to say that the best doubles team in the world was John McEnroe and his partner, whoever that was, and I believe it.

Anonymous said...

When I was 8 the beauty of his playing went a bit over my head. :)

Peter Flemming. They were a wonder to behold. I really loved watching Mac play. Also felt very sorry for Ivan Lendl, so close so often...

Lancs. Anon

REReader said...

Ha! I hear you, Ella--and I was definitely older than 8!

Lancs--Oh, sorry, I didn't mean I couldn't remember who McEnroe's partner was, I was actually paraphrasing Flemming, who said ""the best doubles partnership in the world is McEnroe and anybody." (I think more than once--it was certainly quoted by the tv commentators every time they covered a McEnroe doubles match!) I think I saw him play with Woodforde, but I can't be certain.

Just woke up to do some dinner. Sherlock is solemnly explaining why I should exactly split my sleeping time between him and John, pro rata to how much time I see them in a day, so it's fair.

pandabob said...

ah that's so lovely of Sherlock, I guess he misses you so maybe you should check under your pillow for half eaten jam sandwiches in the morning ;-)

enjoy your dinner :-)

It's nice to be wanted! :)

He wants you to get up halfway through the night and come sleep with him? That's adorable and flattering :)

Just had an interesting talk with a colleague about the trials of this nurses/police deal regarding mental health.

(We're both in agreement that we're slightly perplexed!)

Interesting to share thoughts on it. And he forgave me for yawning widely in the middle of it.

REReader said...

Is there any sort of training program for the nurses? Are any facilities available to take in these people? Or is it all "Let's wing it," do you know?

I hope you have a quieter night tonight, but I guess weekend nights aren't the best bet for quiet.

Anonymous said...

the trials of this nurses/police deal regarding mental health.

err…can someone explain/point this perplexed american to an internet site explaining what the nurses/police deal is?

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - this sort of explains it a bit:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-23074602

Although it more gives an overview than answers any questions - questions we all have!

RR - well, I would imagine the nurses are trained in mental health issues? Otherwise it would seem even more bizarre.

But no, the problem is that we don't think there will be anywhere to take people who need help. Essentially, the police have always spent a huge amount of time and money on this issue, which is a health issue. This is...well, not removing police from the equation, which is really what should be happening. So we're confused.

Anonymous said...

Ahh. Thanks, Lestrade. So…the nurses are going to patrol with the coppers and do what John did the other night, which is call around and around and around trying to find someone a place to go who doesn't need to be in a cell?

rsf said...

Sorry. Annoying wasn't the right word for gropers at all, was it? But I couldn't think of anything else polite enough to post.

I wish we could remove police from the equation when it comes to mental health too, but I can't imagine anyone in politics willing to say we should invest in facilities again. I get so tired of the "we have to cut and cut and cut" crowd.

RR, The last time I watched tennis it was Bobby Riggs vs. Billie Jean King...

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - I think so? Seems like a waste of their time, really. Especially when half the time it would end up with the patient in a custody suite anyway.

It just sounds like they think they've 'answered the problem' when they've done anything but.

REReader said...

Wouldn't it maybe make more sense to send out social workers than nurses, then? Because they'd presumably at least have contacts they could draw on to get the mentally ill or drugged or drunk admitted somewhere. I mean, what can a nurse do really, besides say, "yep, that guy should definitely be admitted somewhere"? I don't think they can diagnose or prescribe medications or anything like that--can they? (Thinking about it, I realize I have very out-of-date information on what exactly nurses are allowed to do--and I bet it's not the same here and in the UK, either.) *confoozled*

Oy, rsf, I've been trying to forget that Riggs v. King match forever! I actually remember the hoopla about it way better than the match, and that King outclassed Riggs in just about every way.

Greg Lestrade said...

Success! I have released a person we arrested last night, now he's sober, his wife is sober, his friends are sober, and everyone agrees that actually he didn't do anything, they just thought they'd say he did...for...complex family reasons.

I have visited the canteen and been given a muffin.

Sherlock has texted me to say he and John are making Mycroft some biscuits. John is swearing. In the way he does when he's not really swearing.

pandabob said...

I'm glad you're having some success Greg but complex family reasons. sounds very annoying to deal with!

Was the muffin in exchange for something or just a present from someone nice?

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - I wandered in on a vague forage for food, and they had some frankly terrifying looking orange curry. So the nice counter lady found me a muffin, as it's my 'breakfast'....sort of ;)

RR - I presume a nurse can assess the person, and possible find them an alternate place of safety. But without more facilities available, I think often that will lead to an s136 - a trip to the nick. Because it's better than nothing.

REReader said...

Sheesh.

Well...enjoy your muffin! And maybe you'll be able to have one of the biscuits for Mycroft in the morning. :)

pandabob said...

yeah a muffin is better breakfast food than orange curry, I'm glad they could find you something :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

They did have full english, too. But that was a bit much!

And...sometimes I really would like to arrest people for stupidity.

Lady has just made about the worst job of apologising I've ever heard - I mean, given that she was actually trying.

Anonymous said...

Er...was she tryin to apologize for drunkenly groping you, or something else?

-Ella

pandabob said...

I hope you make it through the shift with no unwanted advances tonight Greg :-)

Good luck with sleeping John, I hope you and Sherlock have had a nice evening :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

Ella - she was the...mother of the wife of the man I currently have in custody awaiting charge. And yes, she groped me - which she managed to apologise for. And then she attempted to apologise for calling me a 'c***sucker' when I refused her advances. And that really didn't go so well for her. Her daughter, it must be said, didn't help matters! It was sort of funny enough that in the end I put them out of their misery and told them to go.

John H. D. Watson said...

Being drunk makes everyone a bit idiotic...but some more than others.

Greg Lestrade said...

They weren't drunk just now! The more tired I feel the funnier it gets.

You okay? Biscuits made and not yet eaten? Sherlock off to bed in a timely manner, or with many protests?

John H. D. Watson said...

Biscuits accomplished and then we both fell asleep on the sofa about an hour before his bedtime. Just put him to bed now.

Greg Lestrade said...

That's probably good - he'll consider it some sort of victory over the evils of bedtime.

How long did it take you to notice I'd gone to work? I said goodbye to you and you said 'I think it's next to the sink' and waved an arm at the kitchen. :)

John H. D. Watson said...

I didn't! Did I? It was a pretty good match...

Greg Lestrade said...

You'll never know now, will you? ;)

When does he play again then? Or does it depend how much it rains?

John H. D. Watson said...

Not for Centre, now that they've got a roof - and I can't imagine them putting Murray on any other court. Should be Monday.

Greg Lestrade said...

I didn't know if...say...it rained loads, and his opponent might not 'get through' in time...or...I don't really know what I thought :)

What sort of biscuits?

John H. D. Watson said...

It would be someone who played today, so if they didn't get to finish their match today, they should finish tomorrow and be ready by Monday...although if it just keeps on raining, who knows! I don't even know who he's playing next, I should look.

Chocolate swirl. We might even have saved you some. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

My blog put you in spam :(

I hope you saved Mycroft some, at least!!

Weather is meant to be good right through 'til Tuesday now. :)

Be nice for tomorrow, and hopefully tennis will be played.

John H. D. Watson said...

Shocking behaviour from a usually polite blog.

A few...possibly... No, really there are more biscuits than any reasonable household needs. Fortunately, we've never been reasonable.

Oh good, that's all right then.

Greg Lestrade said...

I've got to head out and see what might be a serious assault. Or a traffic accident. Or both. Or just an accident...

The joys of a body in the middle of a road with serious injuries and absolutely no witnesses.

Such a change from last night - hundreds of witnesses, not a single one in agreement with another.

John H. D. Watson said...

Good luck with it. I hope it's not too bad. Love you.

Greg Lestrade said...

Love you too :)

See you in the morning. I'm sure Sherlock will be there with a stopwatch to decide how much time I spend with each of you, and therefore allot my sleeping hours fairly.

Anonymous said...

Has Sherlock read his forensics book yet? It would be interesting to see how he'd go about it--body in the road, no witnesses, only the evidence that you can gather for yourself to go on...
