Not the best of days

I'll be honest. Which about this sort of thing, is rare.

Today was a bad day. I'm tired, I had to get used to a whole new set of people, at a new station, it's hot, we haven't caught the bastard, I miss John, miss home, miss my team and...well, other reasons too.

Actually, I suppose now I've said all that, I may as well give up on being mysterious.

Today I was supposed to meet Bryan and his solicitor, with my solicitor, and be a whole big step closer to getting through court and sorting out the dissolution.

Instead I've had to reschedule that...or rather, just put it off until I-don't-know-when. And...and I just want it over. Want it done. I hate all this waiting for paperwork and court dates and bloody solicitors writing letters.

Anyway, finished on time today. Well, on time being about half seven, Italian time. And have a reasonable hotel. So I've eaten, and am now sitting in the town square with coffee and wifi. So it's not all bad.

Oh jeez... I'm sorry, Lestrade. Absolute best of luck in getting home soon. And good on you for being honest and upfront about everything.

That really sucks - getting yourself all geared up for the solicitors' meeting and then not being able to go through with it. And knowing you'll have to endure it all again.

I presume that was what was on your mind earlier this week.

So, once again hugs and enjoy your coffee.

I'm sorry, love. That's...well, that's pretty terrible all around. Just tell me if there's anything I can do to make it easier for you. I miss you too.

Small Hobbit - yeah, it was.

Thanks both of you.

John - thanks. How was the boy wonder today?

I'm sorry, Lestrade. That's got to be frustrating. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you catch the guy soon and are able to get back home.

Not too bad. Cranky, difficult, didn't want to go to school, but nothing like he was before, and Mrs T said he was fine once he got there.

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Glad he's a bit happier. Or at least, less unhappy. Glad you've had a bit of a break too. You sounded tired last night.

John H. D. Watson said...

I was. Of course, then I stayed up till about four watching Federer play, but at least he won.

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Did he? Good. Hopefully I'll be back to watch him in the final with you.

I might have to head back to my hotel. Bloody knackered, and up early tomorrow.

John H. D. Watson said...

That'd be nice. It's not the same when you're not here to roll your eyes at me. :) You've got until Monday, maybe longer if it keeps raining there.

All right. Call me when you get there?

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Be about ten minutes. And I'll try to be done by Mon. Really will.

If only they would pay attention to your tag and come here and let you arrest them.

Sucks that you'll have to reschedule the lawyer stuff as the angst you've already put into it never seems to count for the next time you'll have to do it. If only it could work that way.

Too many if onlys in this comment. Back to reality for me I guess. Glad Sherlock managed to survive a day of school at least. I'd imagine that once he's used to it again the routine of it should be comforting to him. It's one of things that hasn't changed from last year. John and Mrs. T, solid as a rock.

God, you guys have really had a bad run of things lately. I hope this is where the tide turns, and you catch this bloke quickly and get to go home.

Oh Greg... *tight hugs* I hope you're allowed to get some uninterrupted sleep tonight. Take care, be careful, and know we're all cheering for you. It's horrid that this situation with Byran won't end, but you've got your priorities straight. He doesn't control your life; you do.

As for your comment on John's blog re: ISL skills...

I learned my family's "home language" from my parents. As a result, while I do speak a "critical language" in the job market, my ability to talk about professional subject matters is null. I can order food, follow directions, and scream for help coherently, but I cannot give an economic analysis or gossip about celebrity faux pas in any language other than English. In short, I commend you for your sucessful effort to speak the language of modern Italian policing.

*tight hugs*

Well that sucks :-(

Hope things are getting better in terms of getting used to the people you're working with, getting more comfortable with the language - and in terms of catching the bad guy, rescuing the child, and getting home.

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Nameless - problem is I keep moving to keep up with the most likely sightings of him. If they do catch up with him I want to be the one to talk to him, him being English. So although my Italian is getting better, I still keep having to meet up with new people.

Ro - really don't feel like things have been too bad recently! We had a brilliant summer together. This is...well, if it had been this time last year, I'd probably have beenhaooy to be out here. How things cahnge, eh?

John - hope Sherlock's improving day by day. Has Mycroft called? He sent me a text yesterday, I forgot to say. Just wishing me luck. In italian, of course...

Kholly said...

Wishing you luck in Italian. It's the little things that always make me want to hug Mycroft.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - Ha, of course. Pity you couldn't take him along as translator. Hasn't called me no, but he has texted, once to tell me the food was actually good and a couple of things about his roommate. Apparently they're getting on fairly well.

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Might need him when I'm back. Beginning to forget I'm English. Answering my phone in Italian now, Sal pointed out earlier.

Glad he's getting along with his room mate

innie said...

John, have you seen A Fish Called Wanda? Are you going to go all Jamie Lee Curtis if Lestrade speaks Italian to you?

L, I applaud you. My brother and I learned two languages simultaneously but as we got older, our parents stopped speaking Tamil to us and so we both have the vocabularies of three- or four-year-olds. So I can name the colors and count to ten and say "yummy!" and "yucky!" and will answer to pet names only suitable for the very small and cute (I am, for the record, neither). So I'm impressed by how much you've evidently retained.

Pere said...

Really amused by the image of Lestrade snapping 'Pronto!' when he picks up his phone. Very dashing! *g*

And it's just lovely to see all the ways Mycroft can be brilliant, really. He has a heart as big and quick as his intellect.

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Pere - Sal just thought I was being rude. I had to explain. And she finds it hilarious that I'm struggling to translate some of my new found Italian police terms back to English.

I'm wondering how long it will take for me to answer to Lestrade' again, with the English pronunciation, instead of 'Lestrad-eh'.

Innie - I spoke it every year, to adults, until I was 15ish, and since then have tried to remember as much as possible, and phone my family here to keep in practice. Because I'm totally immersed at the moment it's not so hard.

Greg: Every time you have to type his name, I kind of want to kick him in the teeth. Or, taking after the smallest one, in the shins. I hope you can reschedule for shortly after you're back so you can get it over with. Are you going to take John with you? (Or the smallest one? That could prove hilarious...)

I'm still holding my thumbs that today will be the day you catch the monster. I really am.

Greg 'Orio' M F Lestrade said...

Thanks Tink. No, not taking anyone but my solicitor with me. And yeah, can hopefully get it over with shortly after whenever I'm back. Which I really hope will be soon.

Tink said...

Hey, what are internet friends for if not to express desires to commit bodily harm on your ex? :D

But seriously, I am (we are) here for you okay? Even if you have to pull a "Hold on a moment while I check my notes on my phone" and make a 'please give me reasons I should not leap over the table and try to throttle him' post. You can do this because you are SO MUCH stronger than the man he knew. I mean, you have a partner who rocks and a pair of kids who love you. What does he have? Bitterness. SO. In conclusion, you will go asap and take no shit from him and your solicitor will eat his solicitor for breakfast and you will be able to sit tall :D

Much love <3

Hmm. Hasn't happened yet, but he's manage to stick to english for most of our calls... So far.
