Brian Hibbard RIP - Only You

I know I've posted this before. You should really just go to YouTube and look at all their videos.

Brian Hibbard's death was announced today. (He's the lead singer). A sad loss.

Sherlock is still being...testing. Although he seemed to enjoy yesterday.

It's hard to know what to do with the boys on Father's Day. So it was really lovely when Mycroft said that he wanted to take us somewhere he remembered going with their Dad. I mean, he's the only connection Sherlock really has with their father. But we don't want to push them to talk, or, well, do anything, really. So it's great when they just have a nice time together, doing something like that.

And it meant John and I got a bit of time together, too, walking hand in hand in the countryside. Doesn't get much better.

Made me think about my Dad, too.

I think I said it yesterday but Mycroft is such an amazing big brother, giving Sherlock happy connections to his dad and sharing experiences that he had so Sherlock can build memories of his own :-)

Do you have any knowledge of where your dad is?

I'm sorry Sherlock is still unsettled, I know it is no consolation that other children are struggling with it as well but they are :-(

It was very nice. Lovely day all around.

Does Sherlock have any recollection of his dad? It must have been even more peculiar for him before he knew John and you.

This was one of the first tracks I ever downloaded (legally I hasten to say, I'm proud of the fact that I have never had any illegal downloads), I've always loved it.

AnonyBob - yeah, Mycroft is amazing.

And no, I don't. Although I could probably find out, through some family in Italy. I don't know if he still keeps in touch with them at all.

Could be dead, for all I know.

John H. D. Watson said...

Lancs. Anon - Sherlock have any recollection of his dad?

No. His father died before he was born. It's difficult for him, obviously, and hard on Mycroft too.

Greg Lestrade said...

He did give me a hug at bedtime, for the first time in a while.

And ask if he could go to the toilet again, because he's desperate for pink pee...

It must be tough for the boys to have had such different experiences in their lives. I can't imagine what I will do when my dad isn't here anymore and I'm supposed to be a full grown adult! Mycroft's ability to give some part of their father to Sherlock is amazing and I hope he is as proud of himself as he should be:-)

Do you want to know where your dad is Greg? I know you think about him sometimes but he really doesn't deserve to know you! you are an amazing guardian to your boys and that is all credit to you :-)

Anonymous said...

I'm incredibly glad both boys have you, you're doing a wonderful job with the two of them.

REReader said...

Hard all around, for sure. It's very special of Mycroft to give what he can of their father to Sherlock--it can't be easy for him to talk about it, and a part of him has to want to keep those memories for himself.

That's a lovely song/performance, L, can't hear it too often. I love those tight a capella harmonies.

(It's not entirely surprising that Sherlock is having trouble coming to terms with the school changes--in his experience, when people leave, they generally stay gone. I imagine it's hard for him to really believe that won't be the case this time, no?)

Anonymous said...

All of this deep thought and what grabs my attention? That's right, pink pee. Hm. I wonder if I should get some beets for dinner...

rsf

(who thinks it might be an idea to point out to Sherlock that he's the one leaving this time, which means he always has the choice to come back and visit Mrs T when he's bigger. I'll bet some of her other old students have come by now and then during the school year.)

Greg Lestrade said...

AnonyBob - I'm never sure if I want to know or not. That's the problem.

RSF - The school isn't even very big. I mean...really not very big. He'll see Mrs T every day! Just not a lot. We're both sure he'll come around to the idea. He really doesn't have a choice. And past history (us, Mrs T) has proven that once he's got over himself he does quite often like the new people. We just have to hope his new teacher is the same.

Maz said...

It's ok, rsf, I did too. And sorry, Sherlock, no matter how much purple stuff you eat, I don't think pink pee will happen. I used to eat pickled beets all the time as a kid, and no change was ever note in the color!

I'm glad you all had a lovely day together Sunday.

I remember last Father's Day, when Sherlock and Mycroft had some very different, and somewhat difficult, reactions to the day. It's lovely to see them sharing some quality time this year.

Father's Day usually catches us unawares, as we are a fatherless household and have been for a long time. This year it didn't, which felt a bit odd.

The BBC news report on Brian Hibbert contains this rather wonderful recollection of him: "Within two days of meeting him, he'd shown me his naked bum. He was a bit of a character all right. He was also fantastic actor, fantastic singer and a fantastic man. He was an old-fashioned socialist [who] was caring and kind. He did a huge amount of work for charity over the years. He was an honest person. He supported the miners during the strike; he supported every cause." (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-18489401)

we were called in to nursery due to suspected blood in nappies after a beetroot eating incident so it does do something!!

I have a rule in my life Greg, any doubt don't do it. Until you are sure you want to know don't push yourself to find out, I can see all the things you would like to show him (he should be very proud of you for being you and doing the wonderful things you do, both for the boys and for the world at large) but until you are sure you are in a position to accept what may come don't let him spoil your memories of good times :-)

Hmm.. just how easy is it to get phenolphthalein? Or is that a lie my chemistry teacher told me?

ryo said...

as a toddler, i had bright green poo once from eating easter egg dye. freaked out my babysitter, and took a while for my mom (a nurse) to figure out because it was thought the easter egg dye was out of my reach. but i had figured out how to use drawers and things to climb.

maz said...

Fairly easy, Rider. Chem supply stores sell it all the time. Now, what would you be doing with it, we wonders, yes we do...

Anonymous said...

I think someone ought to warn Sherlock's chemistry tutor that we've had this discussion. Or explain about the qualities of laxatives!

Mind you, enough purple grapes can have a similar result, as my sister discovered when the first grandchild of the bunch spent an afternoon with his grandmother eating concord grapes off the vine out back of the house we had then. I don't think the purple stains ever really did come out of those diapers.

Greg Lestrade said...

I think all Sherlock's teachers have rule books and banned substance lists.

REReader said...

Heh!

(It's not as though he ignores rules or bans--it's that no one previously thought to rule out or ban the things he thinks of. That's hardly his fault!)

You okay, L?

Greg Lestrade said...

Tired.

Anonymous said...

Right there with you, I was also awake when you were commenting at 4:06!

How was Sherlock this morning?

Hope you manage your day even with the tired

Lancs. Anon

Anonymous said...

Hm. Maybe Sherlock's less worried about leaving Mrs. T than he's concerned about the construction of yet another rulebook!

Four in the morning here, now, or nearly. Still should be sleeping, or I'll be tired too. Hope your case is going well, L. Any luck with it so far?

rsf

REReader said...

'm tired too--was almost 2:00 when I fell asleep and i gave up trying to fall asleep again at 6:15--and from the sound of it, that still gives me more sleep than most here... *gropes for the caffeinated tea bags^

Desert Wanderer said...

I'd say the Badger Coffee House is open for business, then. Orders, anyone?

REReader said...

One vat of green tea here, please, DW!

(I already dropped my mug twice. :( )

Anonymous said...

Strong, black and intravenous may be the only way to save me :)

Lancs. Anon

pandabob said...

If only I liked coffee I'd be right there DW :-) do you also stock fizzy caffeinated pop? a litre of that would be good ;-)

I hope work is behaving well given your lack of sleep Greg :-)

Desert Wanderer said...

I stock all manner of magical and wonderful things, Anonybob. Whatever your tired heart desires. :)

All drinks served with a smile.

Greg Lestrade said...

Doppio espresso then, ta.

Anonymous said...

I'll be over with pandabob having the fizzy stuff, thanks. Can't drink coffee without repercussions. (Even if I do love the smell of it!)

Small Hobbit said...

Large pot of tea for me please DW. My desk and most of my files have moved office, but me and my computer haven't and can't because the IT hasn't been sorted for the new office.

Desert Wanderer said...

Large vat of green tea :)
Coffee IV :D
Two bottles of fuzzy goodness :B :P
Doppio (?) espresso. ;)
Large pot of tea (pekoe alright?). :E

Coming right up.

John H. D. Watson said...

And more tea please, when you have a moment. I don't think I can share, even if SH were willing.

Maz said...

I have never understood, SH, why, when offices are moved, those in charge don't get the IT sorted FIRST, then move the people? I mean, have it all set up so all you have to do is plug in and go, you know? I hope you get things straightened out soon.

As I have a large coffee and a croissant with butter and jam ready to go, I'm sorted, DW, thanks. Fortunately I slept like a dead thing last night so I'm doing okay. Which is good, because there was an escaped hamster on the loose this morning (caught, eventually. Ooooer, that boy is in trouble.), and I have something like a 15 hour day today and 16 hrs tomorrow. Cheers!

Anonymous said...

Small Hobbit, if your desk is gone are you sitting on the floor or have they given you a wobbly card table for the moment?

rsf

REReader said...

At least it was a cute escaped hamster, Maz! (Those are ridiculous hours. Tell someone from me that those are ridiculous hours, I'm sure it will help. ;))

SH==IT will no doubt tell you that it's not THEIR fault, no one said a thing to them about you moving offices. Then they will ask you if the computer is plugged in and turned on. :D

(As a point of interest--was Sherlock sleepy this morning, or more than usually energized? Got to be one or the other... :))

I think we need to change the name of the band from the Jammy Badgers to the Sleepy Badgers.

Greg Lestrade said...

Doppio is just double, DW. Essentially, you keep making it, I'll keep drinking it.

Sherlock was slighhtly subdued. Perked up when I made him pancakes.

REReader said...

Pancakes are an excellent pick-me-up! (And that's good to hear. :))

Anonymous said...

Sleepy Jammy Pancake Badgers, then. With caffeine in all its myriad forms, except for Sherlock, who gets hot milk.

Desert Wanderer said...

Sorry, was stuck in an extraordinarily boring meeting. Anyone have a spare $2.3 million they could loan me?

Another pot of tea for the Doc (Earl Gray?). :o)
Second rounds for everyone. o<l:oD

REReader said...

Seconds yes, please! (I like the little clown. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

Sherlock being good, doc? We had a deal...

And what does it mean when swallowing gives you a stabbing pain between you collarbones/chest? Not all the time, just sometimes. Drinking too fast?

John H. D. Watson said...

For how long? Just today?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, a while. I mean, ages, really. Doesn't happen all the time. I'm not worried, just curious.

John H. D. Watson said...

I can think of a few things. I'll look at your throat later, but yeah, it's probably fine.

Sally said...

I reckon it's the way he gulps coffee like a drowning man gasping for air.

John H. D. Watson said...

Think there's any chance of him stopping that?

Small Hobbit said...

I'm definitely up for seconds DW. What do you mean you don't want to share with me Doc, I'm not contagious? Although it would have to be a very large pot.

My desk has moved office, the new desks and chairs have arrived in the old office (we get to use the old ones), which we get to use temporarily. Or until IT have sorted out our problem, which since IT is one man who comes in one day a week could be a while.

REReader said...

(I'm very glad I didn't see your question about chest pain until after John answered, L...)

Greg Lestrade said...

I am here, you know, you two.

Desert Wanderer said...

In IT's defense, RR, turning it off and turning it back on solves 80% of the problems, and plugging it in another 10%. I once had to tactfully tell a general he didn't have his computer turned on when he complained that his monitor wasn't working. I was...vaugely successful.

All my teas come in vat sizes, so Doc could share if he wasn't being mean.

John H. D. Watson said...

How big is a vat? Might still need my own... Not earl grey though, really almost anything else.

Anonymous said...

I'm one of those strange people who caffiene puts sleep. It's really annoying. I tried a No-Doze once in college, before I found this out, and was pretty much knocked out the rest of the day.

So, though I know it's sacrilegious to you lot, I think I'll have to stick to decaf. :-(

REReader said...

I know, DW! A switched off power strip was the problem in a publishing house I worked at once (it took a whole afternoon of the "computer expert" there making call after call before I found that one) and an unplugged printer another time. :)

It's a nice sized vat, John, I submerged in my first one... :D

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - fairly sure there aren't many serious chest pain problems that you'd casually ask about on the internet.

It feels like I'm trying to swallow a rock. I've always assumed it was because I gulped.

Anonymous said...

Like whatever you've just swallowed has developed corners even if it's a gulp of coffee or in my case a gulp of coke?

If so, it happens to me as well, I've no idea why, though!

Lancs. Anon

Desert Wanderer said...

Maybe it's love, Lestrade? With your coffee cup? Does your pulse race? Your palms get sweaty? You find it hard to concentrate when it's not around?

Yup, definitely love. Tough luck, Doc.

REReader said...

Oh, now you want me to worry rationally? Heh.

(I'd make a suggestion based on personal experience, but since you've got an actual doctor who'll be taking a look, that would be silly. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

Lancs. - yeah, exactly like that.

DW - the doc knows I've got enough love for both him and coffee.

RR - worry rationally or just trust that I probably won't allow myself to keel over quite that easily.

And I don't think the doc will see anything useful. It's just one of those things I wonder about and he happened to be around to ask when I thought about it.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - well, you're probably right. I just hate to say anything before I even have a look.

Greg Lestrade said...

You can examine my tonsils any time or way you like :)

By the way, you've got the day off next Wednesday.

John H. D. Watson said...

Have I? The whole day?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yep. Well, once Sherlock is delivered to school. Although you could have a lie in and I could do that.

Then you will be taken, by your personal chauffeur, to a very muddy (i hope) part of the countryside, where you will spend the next 6 hours testing yourself and your borrowed bike against the elements.

Sarah just said if I didn't give you back in one piece she'd have my hide.

John H. D. Watson said...

Sneaky! That sounds wonderful, I can't wait. Thank you, love. :)

Greg Lestrade said...

Thought you should practice falling off a bike before you get your own. :)

(Im stupidly excited. Already.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Me too!

I can't fall off my new bike. Ever. It might get scratched.

Anonymous said...

You mean 'Nay, never scratch my pretty!'

That sounds like a fun day you've got planned!

Lancs. Anon

pandabob said...

How long till bike day John?

You sound like you're going to have a fab time next week :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

The bike should be next week as well!

Greg Lestrade said...

So now I switch to being the one worried about the bike, to the one worried about the person on the bike...

I'll buy you a tank protector, too, shall I? And every other thing they sell to keep the shiny side shiny when the rubbery side doesn't stay downward.

Look on it this way - you've never scratched mine, even when learning. So hopefully you won't scratch yours.

REReader said...

Woo! That sounds like a perfectly awesome day you have planned there!

Greg Lestrade said...

Here y'go. Pick what you want.

I was thinking about buying a flat this year... it can wait though, until you've bought a kitchen sink for your bike ;)

pandabob said...

Best week in ages then John :-) its good to see you so excited about your bike :-)

John H. D. Watson said...

It doesn't need a kitchen sink! Just...maybe a personal forcefield.
