On twenty-seven street nothing will keep you warm, everything will bring you harm

I've been researching, slightly, piercings. As always, there's stories from every side of the argument. Some people say it really hurts, others say it doesn't. I think I'd be all right. I can't pretend I enjoy pain that much, but I think I'd enjoy the results!

And I've found a whole world of different 'jewellery' that you can put in to keep it as discreet as possible when you want - weird soft 'filaments' of see through plasticy stuff, to keep the piercings open when you don't want to wear shiny metal bars or rings. If that had existed back in the day I'd probably already have it done. So now my main concern lies with healing time...I don't want to have painful nipples forever. And I definitely don't want to risk injury via fighting some suspect. I think work will always require very discreet jewellery. Which is fine once healed and I can change it. Less ideal during the first few months. I suppose I'll just ask whoever does it (if I get it done) for advice.

New poll up, by the way.

Question today: DW asked 'Big spoon or little spoon' and then qualified it with 'both in bed or sprawling'. I shall admit to not knowing what that meant at first...I've never seen it referred to, really. But anyway, obvious once you Google it know.

Well, on the sofa it does depend - who's got up last, who's doing what, how tired we are. But recently, because I tend to slouch about in jeans and a hoody when I'm at home, and it's cold, John tends to drag me on top of him and stick his hands in the pouch of my hoody, with my hands, to keep warm. Which is very nice for watching TV or just relaxing. Lovely to have him hugging me, all warm, and quite often he worms his feet under my legs, too, wrapping me up like a little monkey. Except he then enjoys breathing in my ears, which tickles and occasionally means I have to exact some form of revenge. Which isn't relaxing, but sometimes fun.

In bed I tend to be 'big spoon' more. Partly because I'm taller, partly because John tends to prefer sleeping with his back to me, and partly because, for reasons which have absolutely nothing to do with John, I can get a bit panicky if I wake up and feel like I'm trapped, which, occasionally, if he's hugging me tightly, I can do. And then I feel stupid, John feels apologetic and we end up desperately apologising to each other in the middle of the night when neither of us has done anything wrong. Best avoided. Although I think I'm getting better. That or John's just so caring he's figured out what to do/not to do. Probably the latter, actually.

Despite that, though, I do prefer winter time, when you can sleep all wrapped around each other, rather than summer when everything is far too hot and sticky and you just want to be on your own in an expanse of cool bedding.

The discreet version isn't an option while they're healing, I take it?

Greg Lestrade said...

I don't know - I mean, I'd love to think so, but nowhere that I've found online (in my admittedly short breaks - I haven't actually spent all day at work researching this!) says yes or no. But I thought I could just go and ask in a good piercing shop, and they'd know for sure. I did read somewhere that titanium or surgical steel was the best for healing.

Aw, I'm so glad you've sorted out all of your spoon-sizing! The important thing is that you're both happy and comfy all squished together.

John, you mentioned in the last post's comments that you and Sarah bonded over musical instruments you were terrible at, so, spill, please. It can't be the bagpipes you were terrible at, because as I recall, you played them pantsless, which would be enough to prompt any audience to a standing ovation. So, what was it?

(WAIT. Is Greg the Florist's new manor the same place you played the bagpipes?)

REReader said...

So the spooning question is really answered: yes. :)

You're probably right that a good piercing shop would know for sure, and it never hurts to ask. You could even call and ask, and they might be able to direct you to a good website, too.

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, to have been there for the bagpiping. (I mean that strictly in the musical instrument sense of the word! Not the...other one. I know how all your minds work!)

Innie - Cuddling John can bring nothing but happy comfiness, I assure you.

John H. D. Watson said...

Ha. I was terrible at the bagpipes, but only that once. In school I was terrible at clarinet. Sarah's nemesis was the french horn.

Is Greg the Florist's new manor the same place you played the bagpipes?

I don't know - did we even say if it was in England or Scotland? I can't remember!

John H. D. Watson said...

Excuse me, I just need to go and strangle Roger Federer.

Greg Lestrade said...

Don't make me arrest you. Please?

John H. D. Watson said...

He still has a set to redeem himself.

Greg Lestrade said...

Sorry, we should have tried to go and see a match or something - assuming that's more possible for something like this than Wimbledon? I didn't even know it existed, until you were watching it.

Even if he doesn't redeem himself...please don't murder him? I think you'd regret it in the end.

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, it's a bigger stadium and...well, it's not Wimbledon. The WTF has only been in London the last two or three years so I imagine a lot of people don't know about it.

He should've already won! I can't believe he let the last set go to tiebreak, let alone that he managed to lose the tiebreak. He was doing so well.

Greg Lestrade said...

WTF?

John H. D. Watson said...

World Tour Finals. I can only assume they didn't look up that acronym before they settled on the name.

Greg Lestrade said...

Ah. I though maybe 'World Tennis Federeration' or something.

No, people do manage to be very dense, don't they, with their acronyms.

John H. D. Watson said...

If he throws away one more break point...

Greg Lestrade said...

Should I come over there and restrain you with a hug, to prevent you throwing things at the telly or marching down to the Dome and killing him?

John H. D. Watson said...

It's all right, he's done it! He won! You can hug me anyway though! That was brilliant.

Greg Lestrade said...

good.

You're even more gorgeous when you smile

John H. D. Watson said...

love you :)

I promise not to murder any tennis players. Really.

REReader said...

*tosses confetti*

Greg Lestrade said...

excellent. I'd really quite like you not to murder anyone.

No sofas to cuddle on in jail.

Unless you're in that one in mexico ;-)

Greg Lestrade said...

ah, very true...not quite the same in the Scrubs though!

Anon Without A Name said...

Your spooning arrangements sounds adorable :-) We're a bit odd, I think; we go to sleep spooning one way round, and tend to wake up spooning the other way round.

I voted Get Them Pierced in your poll, but what I meant by that was get them pierced if you want, don't be put off by what other people might think. I would think that a bar bell might be discreet enough and safe enough for work, and would allow proper healing. Should you decide to get it done, of course.

Greg Lestrade said...

Seems a popular choice, Nameless! But yes, I won't be making my decision based purely on the poll results, don't worry.

There are some very discreet barbells available. It's more a slight fear of just how much it would hurt if I got into some sort of scuffle and got hit, like today. But the slightly flexible ones sound like they wouldn't hurt as much? I'll be doing more research :)

My brother got his nipple pierced when he turned 18 (to my mum's horror, ha!) and his mates, being the supportive, mature adolescents they are, smacked him on said nipple pretty much whenever they remembered about it...

He took to wearing really padded jumpers for a while ;-)

No lasting damage was done though and he loves it now (I see it far more often than I need to, if I'm honest!)

Harry said...

I got one of mine done. It was okay. Hurt afterward, but not that much.

Greg Lestrade said...

'okay' doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement, but thanks.

Anon - I feel like my friends would have done the same, back in the day.

Anonymous said...

I voted "Oww, never," but that's only really my feelings for myself. I'm somewhat (okay, quite) phobic of needles, to the point where I end up shaking and crying in the doctor's office when it's time for injections.

My first year at university, an acquaintance of mine showed off her new nipple piercings to her entire hall. I was in a different dorm, but my best friend wasn't. *chuckles* Made for a good story.

Harry said...

I should've thought about it more beforehand, that's all. Just saying, it's not a horrible experience, so if you decide you want to do it, don't let that hold you back 'cause it's not that bad.

REReader said...

I voted "Owww! Never!" for myself, and "Get them pierced" for you IF you want to.

I really would never.

mazarin221b said...

Oh man. If I weren't such a complete and utter wimp, I'd have mine done. But I want it for the look and...uh, other things, after they're done, I don't want to do it for the pain rush, like others I've talked to. *shudder* I'd be asking the technician to coat me up with some sort of topical analgesic. Either that, or I'd get completely bombed first!

And glad for you, John, that Federer won. My Twitter feed is exploding over it.

Greg Lestrade said...

Right. I'm thinking pretty hard.

thanks.

Will we see you over Christmas?

Harry said...

I dunno. Maybe. I guess, if John wants me there.

John H. D. Watson said...

Of course I do.

Long time reader, first time commenter - and I feel a bit silly having this be my first topic, but what the hell.

I have one nipple done and I love it - now that it's healed, anyway. It does hurt to get it done - more than getting ears pierced but less than a tattoo. And it'll be sore for the 4-6 weeks it takes to heal. But once it's healed it can be quite nice ;)

I've never used any of the clear, flexible jewelry, so I'm not sure how it compares to metal in terms of sensation, but you will have to keep in whatever they pierce it with while it heals. I think my piercer said not to change it to anything else for six weeks minimum.

Anyway, hi! *waves*

Greg Lestrade said...

lbmisscharlie - welcome, and thanks! Very helpful.

Harry - excellent, you can drop around any time, you know?

Desert Wanderer said...

I only learned about "big spoon/little spoon" in survival training. Our instructor swore spooning was the answer to every problem. And then showed a picture of a mountain lion pouncing on a rabbit and said "Oh, look! The mountain lion wants to be the big spoon!"

Spooning with the Doc sounds lovely, and much lovelier than spooning with an actual monkey. Although bananas are easier to clean up than jam.

Small Hobbit said...

DW - Although that does depend how squished the banana gets.

Desert Wanderer said...

Fair point, SH. And I would imagine a squished banana covered in jam would be even worse. Might be worth it depending on the clean-up method, though...

Rider said...

I don't think either John or Lestrade would want their bananna squished. Not even with jam involved.

My first time commenting even though I've lurking about for a bit now.

I had my nipple pierced about 20 years ago before there were all sorts of options of where to get it done. Aside from the rather dodgy surroundings and questionable hygiene ( unsurprisingly they didn't have an autoclave or sealed sterile equipment at my friend's house just rubbing alcohol, the stupidity of youth) I'd do it again. It adds quite a bit of sensation to the area.

The clear plastic ones, from what I understand, can only be put in after healing. A small barbell is probably your best bet for discretion you just can't forget to wear an undershirt under dress shirts. :)

Space Cadet said...

Another long time lurker delurking here. *waves* Interesting how the piercing is drawing us all out of hiding.

I had to vote for "don't do it." I practice archery and we're told not to wear any body jewelery of any kind when we're shooting because it's all too easy to get snagged by the bow string and ripped out, even if it is covered by several layers of clothing. I'd be scared, L, given your job, that one of the cretins you get stuck chasing down in person would grab you or shove you the wrong way and the same thing might happen.

I guess if you were riding a desk for as long as it'd take to heal and were able to take the jewelery out while you were on shift after, that would be one thing, but it would make me incredibly nervous to have that as a potential opening.

Greg Lestrade said...

Thank you all! And hello, lurkers, welcome to the fray.

The pros and cons are piling up...thanks for sharing your experiences.

REReader said...

Good morning, Lestrade! Here's hoping you actually slept solidly last night, since we didn't hear from you at 3:00am!

Small Hobbit said...

Morning Lestrade - can I wave to all those who woke up as I did echoing the Boomtown Rats "Tell me why I don't like Mondays"?

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - I thnk I always wake up, but ideally I just roll over and sleep again.

SH - You can! Although it feels like Tuesday to me, given that I worked yesterday.

Desert Wanderer said...

Happy Monday, SH! (and Happy "Tuesday," Lestrade!)

REReader said...

Lestrade, I think if you just roll over and fall back asleep it counts as sleeping through. (I count that way for me, which must make it a universal rule, obviously!)

So if working Sunday makes Monday feel like Tuesday, does that mean you avoid the Monday blues?

Greg Lestrade said...

RR - I think I would have had Monday blues yesterday if we hadn't been so busy. No time for them though!

REReader said...

Does that work on a busy Monday, too? :)

(I ask because I work on Sundays, if I have open jobs--as I did this week--but I feel just as grumpy on Mondays. And I work at home! Maybe it doesn't work if working Sundays is the routine.)

Greg Lestrade said...

I hesitate to say that any busy day is a good day, given my line of work, but I do prefer to be busy.

Risk assessments are my least favourite thing ever, so any day without them to complete is a good one.

REReader said...

So no risk assessments today, I hope?

Greg Lestrade said...

No, spending most of today breaking the news of that bloke's arrest to the women he attacked.

mazarin221b said...

Oh, good. Hopefully that gives them some measure of peace of mind, inasmuch as they can in that situation.

REReader said...

Did the guy agree to plead guilty in the end? It would make it easier for everyone than if the women were going to have to testify, although knowing he's off the streets should be a help either way to his victims.

Greg Lestrade said...

Not yet. I think he will though. Sorry, bit busy.

REReader said...

Fingers crossed on that, then.

And not to worry, whenever is more than fine! (You are permitted to have a life. :))

Greg Lestrade said...

Ha, wouldn't call it a life, not at work!

REReader said...

...

(And a job. :D)
