Whenever two people meet, there are really six people present.

Whenever two people meet, there are really six people present. There is each man as he sees himself, each man as the other person sees him, and each man as he really is.

(I'm determined that I will manage to get the correct number in every post title. Don't ask me why. I seriously fear I might fail. But this quote seemed rather apt.)

So, because I'm lazing on the sofa today, I thought I'd do a slightly difficult (technically, not emotionally) post today.

If you were to make a mix tape for John, what would be on it?

And I couldn't just list tracks and then leave you to try to find them. So I'm going to try to use all my technical (lack of) expertise and put videos up. I hope this works.

There could be hundreds more. This is just a taste.

Eddie Cochran - a guitar legend. And such a joyous song. This is what my heart was singing when John and I started dating.

Link Wray. More amazing guitar work. But the thing that makes this a 'John song' is that, despite having no lyrics, it was banned for 'glorifying juvenile delinquency'! And that's why it reminds me of John. Looks innocent on the surface, but somehow causes trouble anyway!

Leonard Cohen. The most amazing voice. The most amazing lyricist. Lots of people find his music depressing, but I love it. Could listen to his songs over and over. And do. What else can I say about this song, and John. I would do anything for him.

Fleetwood Mac. Because both our lives have changed for the better, and looking to the future is healthier than dwelling on the past.

The Troggs. The song really says it all. Under that calm unflustered exterior, he is a Wild Thing.

And because no track list would be complete without him:

This is awesome! My favorite ex used to sing Leonard Cohen for me - his stuff is so evocative.

And such a joyous song. This is what my heart was singing when John and I started dating. This made me smile so hard, and I think the best thing is that you've never left any doubt that you're over the moon to be with John - it's not just something you remember to say when you hear this song, for example. You seem to have a little light on inside you whenever you talk about John.

I was lucky enough to see Leonard Cohen in London a couple of years ago. Amazing bloke.

You seem to have a little light on inside you whenever you talk about John.

He really does light up my life. Lots of people's lives.

I haven't even had a chance to listen to them yet, but And such a joyous song. This is what my heart was singing when John and I started dating. just made me go awww.

I've just listened to the songs and I am totally all teary, it's so beautiful and happy...John? You okay there?

Greg Lestrade said...

KHolly - it was just one of those times when you want everyone in the world to feel just a bit of the joy and happiness that you do. Perfect song for it. Makes you want to get up and dance. (And great guitar work, just as a bonus).

I really wanted to put 'Button Up Your Overcoat' on the list too, after I'd posted. Because it's such a John-song, worrying about people taking care of themselves!

Anonymous said...

I love Button Up Your Overcoat. I have a version of it by a woman called Nnenna Freelon who I saw perform live at a little club here. And I keep wanting to have someone I could put that on a mix for. I did recommend it to my sister for her playlist for her wedding reception this summer.

That's actually from the show I saw.

And now that I've listened to all your choices I'm smiling just from all your guitar picks. Do you get to play much these days?

Greg Lestrade said...

A bit - not as much as I'd like, because either I play out loud and inflict it on everyone else, or stick my headphones on and be anti-social. But I play more than I have for ages, because of the amp and headphones John bought me.

The list is rather guitar-heavy - it's the music I know best!

That's a lovely version of the song. She has a great voice.

There is no song that is not made better by Johnny Cash singing it. This is what I have discovered by extensive use of Spotify. And after listening to the Link Wray, I'm just off out to be both juvenile and delinquent!

Seriously what a lovely collection, there is after all no such thing as too guitar heavy.

You, sir, have excellent taste. [Insert boyfriend reference here.] I especially approve of the Fleetwood Mac; they're one of my favourite bands.

Link Wray is a Godfather of rock.

You should listen to these two:

Raw, brilliant music/vocals:

More fantastic guitar:

Happily no one in the office is paying attention to me blasting music out of my computer...

ALREADY back?

It's like forcing jetlag, at both ends (when you start on nightshift and when you end), only without even the sunlight shifting to help out. At least you have tomorrow and Tuesday to recover, right?

Greg Lestrade said...

back at 7, yeah. but yes, last night, then two days off, both of which I'm sure Danger will rule me with an iron rod to make sure I sleep at appropriate times.

Anon Without A Name said...

I'm sure that John would regard sparing the rod to be spoiling the DI...

or, I'm sure John will use his iron rod to keep in bed for as long as possible...

or, I'm sure John will use use his iron rod wisely and in your best interests...

or, I'm sure John is already making plans for you and his iron rod...

*innuendo overload, brain melt*

REReader said...

Danger will rule me with an iron rod

If I hadn't listened to your mixed tape up there, I might feel sorry for you. As it is...

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless, I can assure you he uses his iron rod to its very best advantage.

John H. D. Watson said...

L wouldn't let me listen to these while he was home. I now see it was because he was at serious risk of getting hugged to death if I had.

That's just... It's lovely. And I don't know what to say. Except thank you, and I love you.

And I didn't understand how something with no words could contribute to juvenile delinquency, but now that I've listened to it I can sort of see their point.

Greg Lestrade said...

it's embarrassing! I mean...you know what I mean. You might've hated them.

I didn't see how you could contribute to DI delinquency. Until I got to know you, and now I'm always in trouble.

John H. D. Watson said...

It's not embarrassing, it's incredibly sweet. I love them all, and I hadn't heard most of them before.

I haven't been getting you in trouble! It's your job to be in trouble.

Rider said...

Danger will rule me with an iron rod

Or wear you out with it.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm glad you like them. There were lots more that could've gone on the list.

And...I don't know. If you really like them maybe I'll play you more on my guitar. I feel silly, like...I don't know. I just do.

John H. D. Watson said...

I would love that.

Sherlock's trying to play the Link Wray one on his violin. It's...interesting.

REReader said...

And I didn't understand how something with no words could contribute to juvenile delinquency, but now that I've listened to it I can sort of see their point.

And also it's titled "Rumble". :D Maybe Sherlock and Lestrade could work up a duet of it....

Greg Lestrade said...

Oh, I wish I was there! He'll have to show me tomorrow.

I might pluck up the courage. Maybe.

John H. D. Watson said...

I'm sure he'll be more than happy to. I think you'd be hard pressed to stop him actually.

I feel silly, like...I don't know. I just do.

I hope that's not because of anything I said or did, or...well, anything.

Anonymous said...

Wish you could record Sherlock for the rest of us.

Greg Lestrade said...

Absolutely nothing you've ever said or done, no.

All just in my head, as usual.

REReader said...

I have the strongest urge to hug all of you.

(Don't worry, I'm still in NYC, where I can't embarrass you. As much.)

John H. D. Watson said...

All right. I'm glad of that, and if you decide you want to, that'd be really nice, and if not, of course that's fine too.

Greg Lestrade said...

I do want to. Monday or Tuesday. Think of sorts of thngs you'd like to hear.

John H. D. Watson said...

I will, thank you. Walk the Line would be great actually. I love that one.

Greg Lestrade said...

brilliant.

i love you. Miss you.

Anything you want to do tomorrow or Tuesday?

John H. D. Watson said...

Can I ride your bike again?

Greg Lestrade said...

You can. We'll have to find somewhere else though, not sure I can swing Hendon's track again.

There are other places, though. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

John H. D. Watson said...

I really did.

And maybe a ride and lunch out somewhere?

Greg Lestrade said...

sounds good. not sure I'll manage it tomorrow. I'm pretty knackered now.

hopefully tonight won't be too busy though

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah, definitely Tuesday. Tomorrow is for sleeping and lying about.

Greg Lestrade said...

sounds good. I;m literally counting the minutes

John H. D. Watson said...

Quiet tonight so far?

Greg Lestrade said...

yes, which is good in some senses. Bad in that I think the clock is actually going backwards.

REReader said...

I think the clock is actually going backwards.

Is it going "kcit kcit kcit"?

dw said...

Lestrade, not ignoring the post. Rough nite so I haven't listened/read yet. Thanks for answering tho.

Greg Lestrade said...

Hope you're okay, DW? And no rush.

Desert Wanderer said...

I'm alright. Sorry.

Didn't want you to think I was ungrateful for answering another of my questions.

Those are all wonderful choices, but the first and the L Cohen one are my favourites. The idea that your heart had a song (has a song?) is lovely. You're such a softy. ;)

Greg Lestrade said...

No need for apologies.

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone. I'm meant to be a scary copper.

Glad you liked them.

Desert Wanderer said...

Whining is never becoming.

More importantly, John liked them.

I think a lot of cops are softies at heart. And your secret is definitely out, given the way your team acts with you. Whatever shall you do?

Greg Lestrade said...

You were hardly whining!

I try to scare my team just often enough to think I'm not a total marshmallow. Although I think this blog just confirms their suspicions that I'm at least soft in the head :)

Having finally gotten around to listening, I realised I know the Link Wray from... Pulp Fiction? Definitely a Tarantino film soundtrack. I get the association with John - there's a man with hidden depths if ever there was one :-)

DW - have a random stranger hug, if you care for one. *hug* (If you don't, no probs - just bank it till the next time you see someone you want to hug and claim it from them)

Desert Wanderer said...

Thanks, Nameless. I'll accept hugs of any denominaton. I'm not too proud. <3

Greg Lestrade said...

Nameless - yes, Link Wray has been in Pulp Fiction (i think)

Spent a happy half hour listening to these and then forgot to comment. Clearly I'm in need of a replacement brain.

Anyway great tracks, brought back some good memories.
