Bizarre...

So, the poll results are...well, amazing, really.

Love and Hate both got 13 votes.

Would like to try/wouldn't like to try both got 20 votes.

What? and 'Don't care either way' both got 11 votes.

Did you guys rig that??

I feel like I should have more to say about the weekend, but...well, lots of it isn't mine to say.

So I won't.

Tomorrow I have to go and do two prison visits, in two prisons. Really not my favourite way to spend a day. Prisons make me nervous. That lack of any sort of control over your life. The thought of being trapped in a little cell for hours and hours on end.

I wouldn't hack it.

But anyway, part of the job, so off I trot, like a good boy, and interview a few murderers. Lovely.

The thought of being trapped in a little cell for hours and hours on end.

I think they make it unpleasant on purpose.

Greg Lestrade said...

You would think that...but so many people I meet just treat it as a slight hazard, rather than a deterrent. Most of them have spent more of their lives in than out now.

Stop me before I go on about how the system fails people...it would be VERY boring.

You could go into politics, try to fix it all...or just wait for Mycroft to grow up.

Greg Lestrade said...

Go into politics? No thanks. I'd rather work with fewer criminals, not surround myself with them!

(no offence, Mycroft, if it the path you choose, but the current lot do mainly seem to be crooks.)

John H. D. Watson said...

Yeah. Sad. There's some quote - anyone who wants to be in power shouldn't be allowed to do the job? I'm mangling it, but it seems true enough recently.

Greg Lestrade said...

It does. Although I don't want to be in power, and still don't think I should be allowed to do the job.

How hard do you think it would be to jack it in and open a flower shop??

Wait a second, did Sherlock rig your current poll? It took me getting to the point of wanting to vote yes anyway to realize they both said yes.

I would also vote yes to the flower shop.

John H. D. Watson said...

Can't be that hard. I'll help if you promise to call it Back to the Fuchsia. You might want to save it till you retire though.

Greg Lestrade said...

Kholly - you're not even meant to be able to have two options the same on these polls! I shall be having words with him when he gets up tomorrow.

I shall change the top 'yes' to 'no'. That'll teach him.

Danger - Of course I'll call it 'Back To The Fuchsia'. I could probably retire at the end of the week...I feel old enough, anyway!

Hey, I just went to vote the other yes on my phone and found you've both done the mobile thing now. Mostly it's easier for the phone and so good, but I can't find the poll now. Do I have to "view web version" for that?

Greg Lestrade said...

Ah, you're asking the wrong person. I'm a luddite. But it sounds like it should work?

Greg Lestrade said...

Christ, it's all grey and Orange. Can I change this? Tomorrow, between work, I shall explore. I don't like it.

Anonymous said...

I'm lucky I've figured out how to leave comments at all so I won't be any help. I'm sure Mycroft would be a good source.

John H. D. Watson said...

...What's all grey and orange?

John H. D. Watson said...

Ohhh. Yes, right, the mobile thing.

kholly - yeah, you do have to view the web version to vote in the poll. It's one of the things they ditch to make the mobile version load faster.

I didn't think it was orange though?

Greg Lestrade said...

My blog, when I look at it on my phone. It's horrible.

Yours is all nice and plain. I'll work mine out tomorrow.

Any chance of one of your bone-melting massages? If I'm a good boy?

John H. D. Watson said...

Hmmm. How good do you plan to be?

I reckon Marmite rigged your poll, it ties right in with their marketing campaign.

Luckily I've never been near a prison, so I can't comment on the reality. But for me, being stuck alone isn't what bothers me, it's the enforced communal living and lack of control that pushes me off the deep end.

And weren't orange and grey the alternative colour options for the bike?

Greg Lestrade said...

Really quite exceptionally good.

If you can bring yourself to love a man with an ugly blog...

Bronwyn said...

Down at the bottom is the web version button. I hate the mobile version of y'all's blogs btw. Please don't change the top yes, I'd have to go change my vote. Good luck with prison visit, Greg.

Nameless - yeah, it's the idea of being stuck with other people - and not people of your choice! Two or three of you in a little cell. Hellish.

Bronwyn - you hate them? Do you have to opt back to the web version each time, then? I thought it was a good idea.

John H. D. Watson said...

L - just had a look; it's a bit peculiar, but not that bad. Go lie down, I'll be with you in a minute.

Bronwyn - they're not as nice to look at, but they load roughly 1000x faster, which is nice when you're trying to balance the shopping, Sherlock, and two large dogs while replying to comments!

When I was 13, my class went on a field trip to a prison. We had a tour. What I remember most is how creepy the execution chamber was and how gross the food was. It was all pretty unpleasant and I have no desire to ever go back.

I like the mobile version even if I can't see the poll. Makes everything much easier to read. Although I agree with you about the grey and orange, lestrade.

Greg Lestrade said...

Running all the way, Danger.

Anon - some of the prisons here still have the sites of the gallows, but happily nothing else! And I don't have to sample the food, I'm glad to say. Still, hopefully it inspired a lot of your class not to go back!

The weird colours will be sorted tomorrow, provided I can work out how. Every time I think I know something, they change it!

Not wishing to play 'prison visit trumps', yet doing so anyway...
I lived in South Africa for a few years and whilst there visited Robben Island, where Nelson Mandella spent 18 years of his 27 year incarceration.
An incredibly moving experience but also the first time i'd ever seen penguins in the wild!

anon said...

That sounded much more flippant than I meant it to!

The apartheid struggle is something I would never dream of making light of...

I just like penguins...

Anonymous said...

I wish my prison trip had included penguins. Penguins are great. We did listen to a speech from one of the well behaved murderers about how murdering is bad and prison is no fun and we should obey laws and not kill people with a screwdriver like he did. Then they fed us gross food and explained how leathal injection works and gave us the opportunity to sit in an electric chair.

Bronwyn said...

Yeah, I have to opt back to web version every single time, but in good conscience, I have to tell you not to make any design decisions based on my preferences. I've just never met a mobile version that I didn't find a pain in the neck. My father the computer guru says its because I'm color-deficient, but I totally don't see how reducing the number of colors would make it harder to see. So weird. I'll just keep hitting the web version button. *cheesy grin*

It never occurred to me that the site might load faster on your phone, John. Mine's about six of one half-a-dozen of the other.

As to prisons, the only one I've ever visited was when I was in San Francisco, I took the night tour of Alcatraz which was sad and creepy as Hell. The hospital gave me major heeby-jeebies. Incredibly cool.

Bronwyn

Well, I'm getting a nice day in Wormwood Scrubs and then down to Wandsworth.

Hopefully someone might do something other than throw insults at me. You never know.

There will, sadly, be no penguins.

Lestrade, I saw this and thought of you.

I am, to say the least, horrified.

Well, if we're breaking out the marmite recipes...

Enjoy!

As much as I love my vegemite, I was horrified when I read the recipie on the back of jar for a vegemite-based lamb marinade D:

All of the prisons I've visited have been historic ones. Of which Australia has many, with the whole settled as a dumping ground for England's prisoners thing :P None of them were terribly pleasant, and the solitary confinement cell at Port Arthur gave me nightmares when I was eight (It was incredably tiny, dark and damp and I was locked in for a few minutes by my brother as a joke)

Greg Lestrade said...

Dillon - I have to admit that I've tried those, and they're HORRIBLE. But, in the defence of Marmite, it's because they're not Marmitey enough. They just taste of...nothing. They needed far, far more Marmite in them to be nice. You may as well eat the cardboard box they came in as they are now.

Becca - I'd share some recipes I put Marmite in, but I don't want John to stop eating them on principle. And given he wants me to cook something Marmitey for his Mum, I can't divulge what that could be, either, in case she somehow gets wind of it! Those are good recipes though.

Anon - There's the old joke - 'Man walks up to border control when he arrives in Australia for his holiday. Customs officer checks his passport, looks up at him and says "Do you have a criminal Record, Sir?" The man laughs and says "No - sorry, I didn't know you still needed one."' Ha. Although why we sent the convicts to the country with the decent weather, I don't know...

I'm currently waiting for Wandsworth to bring me the prisoner I want to interview. The other guy was...more helpful than I expected, actually.

The web version of your blogs would never work properly on my phone (I would type a word, and then have to wait 20secs fir it to appear), so I'm a fan of the mobile one. The banner is pretty, but I could do without the orange.

Hope that the prison visits went well today (or as well as can be expected). Sherlock's doctoring of the poll made me laugh, but he probably could have been more subtle, haha.

I couldn't ever survive in prison. I'd get bored, and when I get bored I start singing. And I don't even sing popular music, just showtunes and Disney! I'd get beaten up or shanked within a week.
