Date night, night shift.

The upside of doing nights is that for the bulk of the day I get Danger to myself. Even if he does just nag me to sleep all the time. Who would want to sleep when the other option is to spend the time with him? So I grabbed an hour or so this morning, and I daresay I'll get a bit more this afternoon. Hopefully on the sofa, sprawled over him. Or him sprawled over me. Either way, I'm happy.

Normally I quite like the quiet nightshift gives in the office. I can get a lot done, catch up and not get too distracted. The downside of that is sometimes you have far too mmuch time to think and get caught up in your own head.

Last night was a rare exception, because someone was murdered when I was already scheduled on, which meant no one had to be dragged from their slumbers. Gang fight, too. So although it was horrifically messy at the scene, there's a fair chance of catching them. Hopefully when I get in tonight we'll be close to making an arrest.

Date-night, as you've already seen on Danger's blog, went very well. And yes, I am an old romantic. But it made him smile, which was the entire point, so all was well.

Some of you have also seen in comments that finally the courts have sent out the legal docs to Bryan (took a while, as you have to include the original civil partnership certificate, and I didn't have one. Not the sort of thing you grab when you're hell bent on getting out of a place). So now it's a waiting game to see what he does. Ideally, he'll agree, we'll come to an arrangement about settling and it'll be signed off. I'm not usually a pessimist...but I'm worried it won't be that easy. We can only hope.

Anyway, back to the beginning of the post, what with him and something at work which is weighing rather heavily on my mind, I'm glad last night's shift was busy, because it distracted me from my thoughts.

Whatever it is, I hope it doesn't weigh too long. Good luck.

It's weighing on my mind too, believe me. Which doesn't mean you shouldn't have told me! I'm glad you did.

I do occasionally learn from my mistakes. And not telling you things generally proves to be a mistake.

I'm glad you know. I wouldn't have agreed if I couldn't have told you.

Thanks, Mazarin. I'm rather in the lap of the gods on this one.

*virtual hugs* I hope things work out with a minimum of stress. Good luck.

*fingers crossed* both on the mysterious heavily weighing thing and on a swift and painless-as-possible dissolution.

And you shared! I'm impressed, which somehow sounds both facetious and glib but is intended to be neither. I'm honestly impressed, because breaking such ingrained habits is really difficult, especially habits that are so fundamentally related to your sense of self. I do hope that John believes in positive reinforcement :-p

Cheers, Polaris, Nameless.

Tonight I'll just be out trying to arrest someone for last night. Just working through what the day shift got up to, then we'll head off.

Yes, Danger, stab vest on under my shirt (hidden in a vague attempt to look like we're not out for trouble).

Believe me, you'll probably all get to hear about the 'thing' once it's all over. Until then...well, just give Danger a whole lot of love for being so understanding. Which really doesn't help make it sound less mysterious, I suppose.

Nameless - yeah, every instinct told me not to. Apart from the one that remembers all too well that John's an adult and quite capable of dealing with things and deserved to be told. Not the sort of conversation I fancy having again, though. Hasn't improved his view of the Met any, either.

No, it hasn't, but it is...well, practical. If it were me doing it, I'd probably be okay with it. As it's you, I'm obviously not okay with it, but I can see why they chose to go this way. And I should probably stop before I drive people mad with curiosity, shouldn't I?

Greg Lestrade said...

Yeah, I know. And likewise. I'd be bloody livid if it were you, probably.

So...well, yeah. Probably. Sorry people. As you were. Carry on carrying on.

Thanks for the brownies. I shall eat them for some sort of midnight snack or something.

Thanks for not burning the place down and waking me up. And no, I don't know why I talk in my sleep more in the day. Probably because I don't want to be asleep, I want to enjoy your company.

I'm still dying to know what sturgeon was about. Let me know if you have any relevant dreams.

Greg Lestrade said...

I have no idea. I can't say sturgeon have ever featured in my dreams...

You said 'coma' the other night. Or possible a very slurred 'come here'. I chose the latter and gave you a hug and you seemed happy with that...

John H. D. Watson said...

I'd be happy with that under most circumstances. It was a pretty safe bet.

Greg Lestrade said...

True.

What are you doing? I've just been called a 'motherf****** c***' by one of the deceased's 'friends', for trying to solve the murder. It's nice to feel loved. Oh, and he hopes I get stabbed. Nice.

John H. D. Watson said...

You do meet lovely people in your line of work.

I've just got the boys tucked in and read to and I'm reading a book and trying not to eat all the brownies before tomorrow.

...And feeding Anthea's minions, apparently. I think she must've stepped out, because I've got two of them up here begging for sandwiches and/or entertainment. Can't really blame them, it must be an awfully boring job most of the time.

KHolly said...

Fingers crossed that their job remains boring really.

Hugs to John for being understanding on any topic at any time. Because he strikes me as a fairly understanding guy so that should keep him nicely in hugs.

And stay safe Lestrade.

And to think, when all this started they probably thought there would be murderous hounds and gun battles and helicopters every week. Poor things.

Or maybe they've just heard there's a devastatingly handsome bloke, home alone, with new boots and a new jacket.... I wouldn't want to resist either. I don't want to resist. You all warm on the sofa vs. the mean streets of London where most people would rather I was dead. Hmm.

John H. D. Watson said...

You could always apply to head our security team when Anthea goes off to school with Mycroft. You'd be bored stiff in a week though, and I don't plan on wearing boots and jacket round the flat anyway.

Although the youngest minion saw it hanging on the back of the chair and asked if he could try it on just now. He can't be more than 20. (It didn't fit him, of course, he has shoulders like King Kong.)

Greg Lestrade said...

Stiff. Yes...sorry, thinking about you in leather again. Um, right, yeah, I don't think I'm ideal for the job. I'd find myself rather distracted, I fear, rather than bored. Not ideal.

Tomorrow, however, I will very much enjoy you in your gear hanging onto me. Wonder where we should go? Blast out of town for a bit? Grab some lunch, then back for my afternoon of agony?

John H. D. Watson said...

You ought to pick, it's your brand new bike! Anywhere you like. Lunch at some point would be good though.

I should warn you, Sherlock's extremely excited about your visit tomorrow.

Greg Lestrade said...

there's a nice ride up out of town to Borehamwood. And it passes Hendon, so you could see where I learnt my trade. (And yes, it was the real Hendon in the film the other night, I do remember that bit.) The only place I know at the other end is an espresso bar...but I'm sure we can get lunch too.

I'm excited at the prospect of it being over...does that count?

Might go quiet. We're about to go and stir up a bit of trouble on the rival estate. Hopefully arrest a few suspects.

John H. D. Watson said...

Good luck. Be careful. I know you will, but it makes me feel better to say it.

so you could see where I learnt my trade

That'd be nice. Will they let us in to look around?

Greg Lestrade said...

I know it does. I will do my best.

I've no idea. I imagine they'd let one of their star pupils back in for a look around.

Whether they'll let me back in is a whole other question, though.

It's all changed since I went there, I'm sure. Well, I know it has, from the youngsters on my team!

if you wake up in the wee small hours feel free to give me a call. If I don't answer it's cos I'm in interrogation, okay?

John H. D. Watson said...

Okay.

Are they all going to remember you? Were you infamous? I can't wait.

I hope the weight is more in the line of a questionable promotion and less in the line of being sued. And that whatever it is gets cleared up soon and with the least amount of pain possible.

It's good you're talking it out. Good for you, John, to insist on it. :-)

Greg Lestrade said...

John - I was boring ordinary when I was there. Well, slightly rebellious. I think attitude problems were mentioned quite frequently. And slight anger management issues. Although it wasn't called that then.

Now...I don't know. I'd say still boringly average. But my team does have a good clear up rate. We run about 90%. To a.force average of 70 for murders...so they might have heard of me. Probably not, though.

Humantales - it's case related, rather than my own job. And thanks.

innie said...

Oh, if I'm reading between the lines correctly - and I hope I'm not - then all I can say is stay safe, Lestrade! And hugs to you, John, for being there and not issuing any ultimatums.

Anon Without A Name said...

I think I'm reading between the same lines as Innie...
