Poll quickie...

Well, Mycroft is very dissapointed in you all, as 'Pluto isn't a planet' won the poll, despite not answering the question in the slightest. But Pluto also got the (sympathy?) vote as people's favourite. Poor old Venus trailed in last.

New poll is about the hot topic of music.

It seems I won't be able to hold out for very long before I'm forced to play something for John and the boys. And Mycroft has been very interested in the whole guitar idea. Sherlock is more interested in the state of my hands, and what other instruments cause similar wear and tear on the body.

So what's your favourite musical era? Feel free to expand your answer in comments. I won't tell you mine, for fear of influencing the results.

There should be multiple options for this one. I love the '60s, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the "big hair" bands of the '80s.

I picked the 70's...but I sort of love anything from the 40's and up, like George Gershwin, Lightning Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, and Ella Fitzgerald, or Irma Thomas, etc. I also have Cat Stevens, the Beatles (of course!), and Pink Floyds' entire catalogue, along with numerous Bob Dylan, Simon/Garfunkal, Arlo Guthrie, Eric Clapton, and Queen albums.
So I can't really pick a proper favorite era. I think my favorite kind of music is all the stuff I know is out there; that I haven't yet listened to. It's exciting!
:)
P.S. Oh come on! Give us a clue?

I kind of love all of it, sans the 50s and 60s. I can take them or leave them. My soft spot is for the 2000's as that is the music of my college years and after the mostly wangsty 90's. Then again, I have an unending passion for Cole Porter and Louis Armstrong as well, so perhaps I'm just indecisive.

Random - I thought about multiple choicing it, but hope this gives a more definite answer.

Pommery - I will eventually expand on my tastes, when people have voted. Like you, though, I like a wide variety of things.

Mycroft, please don't hold me responsible for any of the apostrophe use in these comments. I'm not in control of these people.

John, get him to play and sing Hotel California - he used to be able to do it literally with his eyes shut. He won't have forgotten it.

This is even worse than 'favourite ship'! I know that wasn't one of yours, but still. Oh god, why is there not an option for 20s-70s?? Because that's my answer. I suppose I'll have to narrow it down for a proper vote, but :(

John H. D. Watson said...

I absolutely will. Can he do Desperado too?

I feel bad for the 90s now. I almost picked them, but surely someone will. The 10s are probably doomed, and with good reason.

L - can you watch the boys for a bit when you get here? I want to run to Tesco so Mrs Hudson can stay in and rest her hip.

Greg Lestrade said...

Can I use a rare afternoon off to do your job for you... I suppose, for a price. That price bring you telling me what other pictures or stuff Nicky has given you.

Everything post 80s doesn't deserve a vote, in my opinion.

And can I ask a favour back? Please buy me nicotine patches! I've run out, and I'm not going all the way home to get some.

Readers - don't smoke! It's miserable giving up.

John H. D. Watson said...

When you say "tell you" I presume you mean post them publicly so everyone can share in the fun?

Yes, I will get you nicotine patches, and I know it's hard, and I'm very proud of you for sticking with it. That sounds patronizing when I type it up, but I actually am.

John H. D. Watson said...

The word I had to type just now in order to post that comment was "angster". Is your blog trying to tell me something?

Greg Lestrade said...

When I say 'tell me' I mean 'hand them over for destruction.'

And warn the boys I'm only getting out early to write this seminar on crime scene procedures, so I might be a bit boring when I get there.

My blog is trying to tell you there will be angst in your life if you don't stop conspiring with my sister.

John H. D. Watson said...

I've only got one in my possession anyway. She's wisely keeping the rest locked away in a secure underground vault.

Sherlock and Mycroft both say to tell you they'd be happy to help with the seminar. Is this what you're presenting at that conference or whatever up north?

...I'm guessing that this's another poll in which I'll be completely outvoted again. But the 90-00s was my first exposure to pop/rock/music that wasn't children's songs. And I was impressionable. :D

Greg Lestrade said...

It would be if I ever wrote it. It's now postponed, the boys and I will be searching the house for this picture.

John H. D. Watson said...

Best of luck with that.

The problem with the poll is that there's great stuff and there's crap in every decade. And also my college years spanned a decade break so I find myself most often singing along to stuff on both sides.

annoyedwabbit said...

The poll is completely impossible! D: I have favorite music from almost every decade up there!

I'm voting for the 1950s, because the birth of rock and roll lead to most of the other music I like, and because Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis are awesome.

Can I have all and none of the above? Because really, I like and dislike music from all of those times.

I'll throw in a vote for the 60s, as I've been listening to T.Rex for most of the day :D

Greg Lestrade said...

To all of you - life is full of hard questions!! It's only a poll. Don't get too stressed about it. I know each decade has it's gems and dross.

I had to vote for the 90s. I'm not a huge fan, but those were the years when I was young enough to be unselfconscious enough to sing along with everything (Barenaked Ladies, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, you name it). So when those songs come on the radio, they inevitably make me want to sing along again.

I guess that doesn't make it the best (I'll listen to much of the music from the 1920s onward) but nostalgia and catchy, love to hate 'em boyband tunes won out. Sorry ;)

I had a harder time deciding on the poll until I realized it said favorite and not best. I will happily say some of my favorite music is nowhere near the best, even compared to its own decade.

Anonymous said...

Oh, on second look, ignore me. The poll says best. But Orio says favorite and he's the one I listen to.

Greg Lestrade said...

I'm frankly disturbed that the Noughties are winning.

Kholly - favourite/best - you don't have to convince anyone of your choice! We won't all turn music critics. It's all personal opinion.

Oh God, struggling severely here. I plumped for the 70's, despite Not Getting much of the early 70's (except Eagle Rock) - but Hotel California and Desperado FTW, plus Queen and ELO, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Sweet, The Angels, and the once derided but now loved Abba... plus Dire Straits started in the 70's, so they count.

But much like everyone, I appreciate particular songs and bands from the 20's to even the Noughties. Ever heard 20's Louis Armstrong? And Benny Goodman and his band are brilliant - Sing Sing Sing is excellent to get your blood pumping and also singularly effective in combating neighbours' horrible music. (Gene Krupa on drums continuously for just over 12 minutes. *grins evilly*)

Alright, voted 30's in the end... Big bands for the win! Although I listen to mostly anything and everything from hardrock to jazz to pop. But! I love to dance on big band music (lindyhop/swing dance) so that won out since folk doesn't really go anywhere as it's of all times.
